  1. A possible new Ontario record Bull Moose was harvested recently near Thunder Bay. It has yet to be officially scored as the rack must go through a prescribed "drying out" time before being scored. It apparently measures 64 1/2", and has more point scoring characteristics that the current record. Record or not, congrats to Thunder Bays Fred Hilliard.
  2. I've read a number of posts on the VR airbox but don't remember much on the square "stack" in the middle of the filter element. What's its purpose - mainly intake noise abatement perhaps? Has anybody removed or shortened it? Its top edge, stock, is between 1/2" and 3/4" from the underside of the filter element. Any results to report? I know the box is very sensitve to having the top on, and some people like to have some 1/2" holes in the top. But this stack looks like a "flow torture device" to me! Jeremy
  3. I'm sure this has been discussed, but I can't find it. What are some good quality risers that will allow me to raise the handlebars about a 1/2" and set them back about 1 to 1 1/2 inches. Thanks for any info.
  4. I got tired of trying to read the side of the oil bottles to measure out 1/2 quart when I change out the oil on my Venture. Went to the Dollar Store and bought a plastic measuring cup that reads ounces. Pour in 8 ounces of fresh oil into the cup and then add the remaining 3 full quarts right into the crankcase that will total 3 and 1/2 quarts. Hope this makes it easier for some of you on your oil changes.
  5. I had to help out in our store in Dalton Ga. yesterday. I was on my way home and stopped to gas up my bike. As I was getting my gas a lady came out of the store, with a handful of bags. "We are out of gas", she said. I got my gas completely pumped but the car next to me only got 3 gallons in. When I got home I saw on TV that places all over the Atlanta, metro area were out of gas also. I took my wifes car and was going to go ahead and fill it up for her at my regular store on my route to work. I pulled up- slid my card-pumped in a nickles worth and bam they were out of gas. There were bags on all the pumps at the other 4 stores between there and home so she is stuck with a 1/2 tank of gas. Hopefully she will be able to get some by Tues. because that 1/2 tank will only take her to work and back 2&1/2 days! The police chief in Athens Ga. was advising people that were planning on coming to the UGA-Al. football game to not come if they couldn't make the round trip on 1 tank of gas. My daughter and son/nlaw were already on their way to the game. She called me from just east of Athens and said that from her house in Dalton,to where they were then only 3 places they had passed had any gas and the lines were way down the street and police were directing traffic. It is ridiculous to be afraid to go more than a tank away from home for fear of running out of gas. Sorry I just had to vent!
  6. 3 1/2 years ago I tried to adjust my valves. I had done it on several bikes that had screw and locknut adjusters. Trying to go by the book wasn't working out so I put it back together and took it to the Yamaha dealer. When I talked to the mechanic he wasn't interested in helping me figure out what I was doing wrong. Now here it is 3 1/2 years later and I just had it checked by an independent. I told him about my attempt and that it still bothered me. He did it for half the price and explained what he thought wasn't working for me. Like the carb synch in the factoty manual he believes the factory service manual isn't right. He said he had to rotate the engine a little past TDC to obtain good measurements. He rotated it to where the lobes where straight up instead of pointing away from each other. In the position that the book called for the measurements that I was getting 3 1/2 years ago weren't making sense. 3 1/2 years ago (32,000) miles the Yamaha tech changed one shim. Today (65,000 miles) everything was in spec. ????????
  7. I've been expermenting periodically with suspension settings for the past few years, especially since the air assistance began to leak. Initially I added a 1cm spacer which helped a little, but was not enough without the air pressure. Then I went to a 650lb spring, before deciding to upgrade. before the new spring arrived I fitted the spacer to the 650lb spring, but the thicker spring became coil bound on bumps in Irish roads and broke the spring seat. I fitted the upgraded shock after we'd limped home. ************************************************** [Problem with pasting table, please see attached excel worksheet] ************************************************** In case it's not clear, the columns are: spring rate, the free length of the spring, the fitted length, the amount of precompression (assuming no sag) and then the force on the suspension. When I had the new suspension made I asked for it to be a 1/2" longer, so the next column gives the load after that 1/2" of travel - at would be fully extended on the standard shock. I made a few assumptions (like about seven square inches internal area) to guess the force generated by the air pressure which I estimated as 500lb or 225kg, so the next column gives the combined spring and air pressure at rest (assuming no sag). The last four columns are the equivalent figures at fully compressed, which is important as you need to be sure that springs not only don't become coil bound, but have some movement left so they do not weaken through over-compression. To work out the air assisted max compression load I have used the same pressure figure. This could be grossly wrong, however, as the pressure may triple on full compression. I don't know for sure, though. At present I have an 850lb/in spring fitted and it sits way too low - with little ground clearance and not much suspension travel left. I'm not sure how much preload I wound on on the coilover Gaz shocks, but it's not enough. I'm guessing that I preloaded it 1/2" and then it compressed another 1 1/2", leaving 15mm, just over 1/2" of movement (equating to nearly 2" movement at the back wheel) - meaning that static, without a rider, by bike needs about 700kg force, 15-1700lb just to support its own weight. Without a sidecar, or with a lighter one you'd need less, with a trailer you'd need more. In the next couple of days a 1000lb/in spring will arrive and I'll preload it at least 1/2" and prefereably closer to 1". If you're thinking about upgrading your suspension, maybe the above will help - some car suspension manufacturers will find it hard to believe that spring weights as high as this are needed. Coilover springs are much safer to fit than the standard type of shock. WARNING If you fit a heavier spring to your standard shock, DON'T RELY ON SPRING COMPRESSORS (you won't compress them enough anyway) - make up a jig, preferably with 12 or 14mm studs (4 off) to wind down the spring. If the spring were to break free when fully compressed and if you were too close it could kill you. :240:That's because you have to compress the spring enough to fit the circlip into the groove and with the 650lb spring that's practically a tonne of force on the spring.
  8. When using the linked brake on my 84 Venture after a few seconds of normal braking it begins to pulse similar to a warped rotor. I have replaced the pads and bled the front and rear and the Antidive and the problem continues. I have checked the runout on the rotors and it is less than 1/2 a millimeter on the front and almost none on the rear. Any suggestions? Is it possible that the rear master cylinder return hole is partially plugged ? My next step is disconnecting the front caliper to see if the rear alone is OK. Rick
  9. Hey Folks: Your thoughts if you please...Here in Ole Virginia it has been about 90 +/- 2 or 3 degrees...So I have noticed that the engine case really gets HOT during summer riding...Yesterday we did a ride of about 200 miles and of course the heat from the engine is something I have become accustom to....Today however I made a short 20 mile trip to a local motorcycle shop...spent about 1/2 hour there and rode back.....parked the bike....about 1 to 1 1/2 hours later I decided to go our and cover the bike...I always check the engine case by hand to see if to HOT to put on a cover..(condensation thing)...anyway...Motor was still very warm...I could put my hand on the side, but could not leave there for long....Still pretty warm after almost two hours.... THOUGHT: If oil is gets this hot during short run....What about a LONG summer ride ?..It CAN NOT be good for the engine?....Like most on this site I have never heard the fan kick on...DOES is give anyone else "pause" that these motors get this HOT...Just a thought....I see a lot of mile by a lot of folks...with NO mention of engine temp problems...Again just a thought.... George In Virginia....
  10. Until I get familiar enough w/ the bike, I will probably be asking a 1000 questions. I just traded in my Honda VTX for this beauty. Can you take a look at the pics. Does it look like the leak is coming from the 2 tubes (and what are those 2 tubes for) or does it look like the rear shock is leaking? If you think it is the rear shock, do you think the bike is still drivable? Unless I am misreading the manual, it says for the shocks (front and rear) standard PSI is 0. I am a little confused by that. If it is 0 then why bother having air shocks? My thought process is, if I lose air pressure because of this leak, it won't hurt anything because the manual says standard is 0. You can see the trail where I wiped up some liquid prior and you see the puddle forming again. http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc12 ... 0007_1.jpg You can see a droplet forming at the bottom of the shock http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc12 ... 0009_1.jpg You can see the bottom 1/2 of the boot is wet and the top 1/2 is dry (I haven't ridden the bike in a couple days now) http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc12 ... 010012.jpg I checked Babbitts online and they are showing a new rear shock at $423. Don't really care to spend that kinda dough if I don't have to. I am riding a 1999 Venture. Thanks.

  14. Looking to purchase exhaust chamber replacement system for 1st gen. Tried to find using this site, because it's been mention here before . I have 1/2 of a computer (webtv) so it's probably here.
  15. Well today was the 1st time I've been able to get out and ride this year. There have been good days, but life always seemed to get in the way. Took a day off work which was nice because there was not as much traffic in the day time. In getting ready last night I was surprised to find that the tires and shocks were still exactly were they were supposed to be. 1st time I think that has ever happened. The other thing that I found was that all the windshield bolts under the chrome piece were severely loose. I think when I put the new shield on I babied them a little too much to ensure I didn't crack the mounting tabs on the shield. I also got to try out my new J&M headset. Was going to just use the mic on my 1/2 helmet to move away from the hand held mic I've been using. I just couldn't bring myself to cut off perfectly good speakers for the 1/2 helmet, so I went back to my open face. I will have to say I really liked the sound, but it will take some getting used to for the tightness around my ears. All I can say is I feel like a new man:thumbsup: I hope Spring keeps working its way here.
  16. Carl, Thought of you and how much better job you would be doing yesterday and again today. We are butchering 3 hogs and cutting up 1/2 beef! We do everything on the hogs and just cut up the beef. My cousin's raise hogs and this is an annual occurence. We get the beef from my cousin's friend and the meat locker shoots, skins and lets it hang for a few weeks. So 1/4 Beef and 1/2 Hog costs me about $300. Whole lot better than store prices. We have meat saw, grinder for sausage, hamburger, and cure the Hams, bacon. Its seems a lot of work, but cost wise worth it. Do have a question for you. Do you have a supplier for those butcher gloves that help protect you from cuts? I had a friend that was head meat cutter for a supermarket that would get me some, but he was laid off when the store closed. Thanks, Have a good day. Jay
  17. I Will Tell You After Owning 85 Venture And 2001 Springer Harley That After One Week Of Owning 2000 Mm Model Was Ready To Sell. I Have Corrected Riding Position On This Beast To Make Me Feel Confident In Riding This Bike And Maybe Giving Up My 85. I Have Tinnitus ( Ringing In Ears) And This Bike With 1/2 Helmet And The Motor Whine It Produces Almost Made Me Get Rid Of It. I Used A 3/4 Helmet And It Really Reduced Whine Noise I Hear With 1/2 Helmet. The Other Thing I Did To Make This Beast Not Feel So Heavy On My Skinny Arms Is Take Handle Bars Off And Press Them Wider. Went From 32" To 34 1/2" Wide And What A Difference In The Feel Of This Bike For My Long Arms. When I Purchased This Bike Compared To 85 And Harley Is That My Arms Felt Like They Were In Center Of Bike And Did Not Have The Leverage For Such A Top Heavy Bike. Will Even Say Pushing Bike Into Garage Is So Much Nicer With The Wider Bars And The Leverage The 2 1/2" Wider Gives. Will Tell You I Bought A New Bar But Was Way Off And So Decided To Spread The Stock One With Fear Of Kinking Bar. I Saw No Kinking With Flatening The Bar On Plywood. Will Also Say Do Not Go Any Farther Than This For Cable And Wires Just Make This Distance Of 34 1/2" Wide. I Am Really Thrilled With The Way This Has Changed The Feel Of The Bike And Give Me The Confidence . I Did Do A Panic Stop With Grilfriend Aboard And Scared The Hell Out Of Her But I Needed To Know I Had A Feel Of Confidence In Riding And Stopping after changes made.. The Beast Is So Top Heavy Compared To Any Other BikeS I Have Owned.. But The Ride And Looks Of This Bike Are Beautiful. But You Have To Ride The Level And Speed The Bike Is Geared For..this Bike Is Know 85 Venture But My Girlfriend Loves The Ride Over 85 Venture And My Harley Springer...lol I Know Every One Will Not Agree With How I Feel But This Has Made The Bike That Much Nicer For Me And Wanted To Share My Findings Of This Bike In One Week Of Owning It. Joe In Nj
  18. I am having a problem with the area just above coasting and pulling. If I am running on flat ground with just enough throttle to maintain speed, at say 30 to 45mph, I am getting a constant skip, but not like a single dead cylinder. When I give it just a little more throttle, it smooths out and pulls fine. I have been thru the carbs recently and cleaned the pilot valves and everytrhing else. I have also synced them again today and they also look good with the rpm's up to 3,000 to 4,000. I have tweaked on the mixture screws, starting at 2 1/2 turns out and really can not tell much difference when turning them in or out. I have also worked on the diaphrams and have no holes. I also ran a full can of Sea Foam thru it today. Is there any suggections? Denden, are you listening? RandyA
  19. on my 2005 RSV, a couple of weeks ago someone here had done that ? I put the Baron's rear end lowering kit on, so now I'd like to lower the front end the full 1 1/2 inches? Thanks in advance for any advice or instructions.
