  1. I am going to remove my rear tire this weekend. Anything special I need to know on this? Any spring or other stuff will jump out at me and I won't know where it goes after it has jumped Once the tire is off, anything I should do? I think I have read somewhere to grease the spline and I saw different post on this that only confused me . How do I go about doing that? Any good "How To"? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Cheers
  2. I have a Gen 1, 1989 Venture that has some ongoing problems with the rear brake. When I bought the bike, I noticed the rear brake pedal was very soft and about bottoming out. I removed the rear saddlebag to discover that the seals were blown out of the caliper. Bought the seals, rebuilt the caliper and thought everything was fine. Used the recommended fluid. Was very careful not to overfill the reservoir. I was out riding at the end of the season when the bike started lugging. I came to a stop light and to my amazement the bike wouldn't move. I managed to get it to the side of the road and called my wife to bring the trailer. No fluid on the ground, no issues other than I could detect heat coming from the rear brake area. Brake pedal hard as a rock. I tried to move the bike until my wife got there, no luck and while I was deciding what to do, - for some reason - pulled up on the foot brake pedal and voila - the brake instantly released! Brought the bike home and re bled the rear and front linked brake. I has happened twice more with the same result. Give it a few minutes and pull up on the brake pedal and the bike frees up. What is concerning is the wear and tear on the brake, clutch and drive train from the brake slowly tightening as I drive. Would you figure the master cylinder is suspect? Thanks Jim
  3. Just changed over the rear of my 05 RSTD to a BFG, but my question/observation. In the 4 years I have had this bike, I have had 4 flats due to nails, all in the rear tire. In the same time, none of my cages has had a single one. Coincidence?
  4. Hi everyone. I have read some posts on this have tried many things? My front right signal will just flash slightly and rear will flash quickly. When I used my 4 way flashers back will blink correctly front will blink slightly. I have replaced both front and rear with what is suggested by the Yamaha. I also have cleaned out any corrosion and applied dialectric grease. Any help will be appreciated. Screaming Red
  5. New here so I hope I can get a little help on this. I have a 05 RSV and I am having problems with the rear brake rotor pulsating. It first starting showing up around 4500 miles. It took the dealer until about 11500 miles until they replaced it under warranty. Now with 14500 miles on the bike the rear brakes are pulsating again. I brought it back to the dealer and they are telling me that they will not replace it under warranty again saying it's my fault because I am riding the rear brake. I find that almost impossible because of the position of the brake pedal. And yes, I even had the dealer, I see why there called the stealer, replace the brake shoes and the tires. I'm not new to this riding stuff, being doing it for about 40 years now. Any body able to offer any help on this?
  6. Hello everyone: I need to buy tires and I think that I would like to try the dunlop elite 3. I went to the dunlop site and they recommended 150/80-16 for the front, And MV85B15 for the rear. But so far all I can find is 150/80H-16 for the front, And MV85HB15 or MV85H15 for the rear. Can anyone tell me the difference between the HB or the H, Or do I even need to worry about it. I get brain dead sometimes and over think things sorry if it sounds like a dumb question.
  7. I was wondering if anybody knew what part number is the METAL Chrome Rear Fender Tip Called a FLAP I DO NOT want the plastic one. STR-4NL-21621-10-00 (FLAP) And there is another part number that is ----------STR-4YE-2626-92 (FLAP) Thanks for any help. Jeff
  8. I'm going to change my rear tire tomorrow and I was wondering if you can drop the tire through the trap door of the Harbor Freight bike lift. Has anyone tried it? DT
  9. Ok, y'all know the sad tale of me trying to get my bike painted and losing the parts. Now that I've got the new Gwing, I'm feeling better about asking for some help. Here's what I got back: front fender gas tank some side covers both saddle bags (bottoms only) trunk (bottom only) the dealer claims he has a fairing, but I haven't seen it. This means I need: a rear fender both right and left cowlings (I think that's what they're called) lids for saddle bags and trunk passenger back rest w/speakers and all of the hardware that goes along So, anyone got any of the above laying around?
  10. Good evening fellow members. I am looking for a source for a rear brake master cylinder rebuild kit for my 88 VR. I haven't called the stealer yet. I flushed the fluid in the rear and that didn't seem to help. Even if I pump it, it doesn't have much stopping power. I replaced the pads with new EBC HH pads and still no improvement so I am guessing the next logical step is to rebuild the master and see if that doesn't solve the "barely braking" problem. When rebuilding the master is it also advised to take the reservoir off and flush it out as well or just do a good flushing of the fluid after the rebuild? I also have searched the net and can't find a source for the grommet that goes around the headset cable that goes through the plastic on the fairing. I looked on J&M Corp website but no luck. Does anyone know where I could get one of these grommets? Thanks in advance for all your help.
  11. Taking my 08 RSV back to the dealer on Monday to have the radio/CB/intercom checked by a Yamaha Tech Rep. So far the dealer has replaced the left rear speaker, and the black box inside the fairing and it still doesn't work. They were going to change the control head on the handle bars. Don't know what the Rep will come up with. I'll keep ya posted, case some of you are having problems yourselves. My is intermitten and craps completely out with the volume above 15. And will not work at all with the rear speakers faded in. Going to have to do without it for 3 or 4 days. Maybe they'll give me a loaner-- FAT CHANCE!!! Glenn
  12. I have read a few posts on this but still have a few questions. I plan on lubing the rear end in 3 places when I change my rear tire on my 07 RSV. Rear hub drive pins Rear hub splines Rear drive shaft splines (front and back) This is the first time I have done this. The shop manual says to use Lithium soap for rear hub area and Moly for driveshaft. I have read posts about the Honda Moly 60 paste on this site. I mentioned the Moly 60 paste to my dealer who was hesitant to use something with such a high Moly content. I didnt get into a big discussion with him as I want him to stand behind me if there are problems in the future. He has no problem with me doing my own service but seemed to be more comfortable with the lithium soap on rear and normal moly on the driveshaft. Is there a real compelling reason to use Moly 60 or is it more important that you simply grease things to spec? Are the three areas above all that need greasing in the rear end? Any feedback is always appreciated. Thanks Jim
  13. I have a 2004 RSV Midnight and am replacing the rear tire soon. What is the best tire I can buy for this bike? My wife of 42 years rides with me and I want the best tire available.
  14. First, I have to say that the car tire discussions on here lately have been some of the most civil I have ever been involved in on any forum. Good job, guys! Anyway, I haven't noticed any discussion on another aspect of the Darkside. Rear M/C tires on the front. One of the reasons we run c/t's is for the long wear life. To compliment the rear c/t, some have taken rear m/c tires and mounted them in reverse on the front wheel because rear tires are built heavier since the majority of the weight and acceleration forces are on the rear. But why in reverse? This is from the Metzler website: "Rear tires can be mounted at front wheels? When producing tires, the top cap is heated with an angle bump on the carcass. To prevent the detachment of the assembled edges the tire has to be mounted (concerning the main stress: acceleration force at the rear wheel or brake force at the front wheel) corresponding to the respective declaration. Therefore the declaration of the driving direction at the tires sidewall is a very important safety regard and has to be noticed absolute. It is not allowed to mount front tires at rear wheels. In case you intend to mount a rear tire on a front wheel it has to be assembled contrary to the driving direction declaration (direction of the arrow at the tires sidewall). Please observe the standards in your country. In any doubts we kindly ask you to consult your dealer." Just look at a normal bike. The tread direction is opposite on the front from the rear. One tire is oriented for acceleration and one for braking. Just some more info for those considering the Darkside.
  15. I just put a new set of Michelin Commanders on my RSV. The max pressure rating on side of tire says 41# both front and rear. I am used to running 42# in rear and 36# in front on my old set of 404's. The ones of you that have had Commanders what pressure have you run? I want to get the most out of these tires as possible and I know air pressure is very important.
  16. Well I did it; I installed my new stator from Buckeye. It took me a day and a half, due to the fact that I had to remove the battery and battery box just to get to the stupid stator wire assembly and re-rout it. I completed it late this morning and checked the battery output to make sure I was getting a proper charge. I took it out today for a 50 mile ride, for a good shake down. I also have the vmax rear end gears and I really love the performance upgrade that they have given me. I give a great thumbs up to "Buckeye Performance" and to Blue Ridge Sport Max", for the information and the great parts.
  17. Hi All Just finished rewireing my rear bumper. I put LEDs in and took out the incandesint bulbs. Looks nice and it wasnt a bad job. I did it all for under 30.oo bucks. I wanted to reduce the load on the elec, system hope it does that. Ill see if I can get some pics. Tom
  18. Well I finally got my rear LED turn signals done. Now I got to get started with the front turn signals. Each rear turn signal has 20 ultra high flux LED's in them. The front signals will have about 25 of the same LED's in them. The rear stop/tail light will have 72 LED's in it. And so far there are 8 rear, 4 front, and 2 LED marker lights. That makes 176 LED's total. I attached a couple quick videos. One of the finished LED circuit board and another with the circuit board installed in the turn signal housing. I'll keep ya posted when I get the frond signals done and get all of them on the bike.
  19. I have a 08 venture and I rode it to work today and on the way back when i get around 50mph I hear a hum sound in the rear almost like the tires on a truck make but not quit or a gear humming, any idea? It has the factory dunlops on it and I have never heard it before today and I feel alittle vibration also but that could be normal and I am trying to sence things. Thanks for any imput.
  20. Putting new brake pads front and back on my 87 VR, would like some info on which pads to use. From what I have read I should use the following configuration. Rear - standard Organic/Carbon Front - Metal Looking for some advice because there is also Kevlar and Ceramic. I purchased this ride last May and now in the process of putting on new tires front and back (going to use Dunlap 3's) and putting in new rear wheel bearings and clutch. Had to put new diaphrams, plugs, wires and Caps last year. Thanks Dan
  21. I seen some where in here how to install the rear signals off a Ultra or road king. I cannot remember. HELP me refresh my memory. I want to look at that again.
  22. I bought my Venture last June. Ever since I bought it, it wandered. Did not track straight. It was especially bad over parallel grooves or road repairs. I suspected it was tires. When I did the 2nd gear fix(1984)in Dec I took the front and rear suspensions totally apart, greased all bearings and adjusted them correctly. It was better but still not right. I have the super brace, but no progressives. Today I changed the front tire. The old one was quite flat in the center, almost no round curvature. The new one is a Michelin A66 Hi-tour is nicely rounded. The wander is completely gone. :happy65:Couldn't make it wander, even purposely driving on grooved tar snakes. If your having this problem change tires. My rear will be worn out in 2-3k, I bet it will get even better after I change it too. Like Dan has said these overweight bikes can handle. I wasn't sure.

    VMAX rear end

Well I got my new Vmax rear end this last weekend, and installed it as well as a new clutch. What a difference the new rear gears make. I need to adjust the speed O healer, which I will do this next weekend, but WOW, I really like the mid range power difference from the old rear end gears. While I had the tire off, I went ahead and lubed up the hub according to the write up on the tech link. I don't know if the new rear gears or the lube made the difference but I don't have the awful wine any more. I have the more powerful stator comming this next week, and I will install it later this month. I talked to the guys at Blue Ridge sport max and they really seem to be some very nice folks. I paid the whole $600.00 for the new gears and sent them back my old rear end. The day he got my old rear gears he refunded me my $300.00 core charge. With the new stator I am planning on getting the full ensamble from warm gear. I already have the gloves, I just need the rest of the gear.
  24. Leveling Links are. --------( S O L D )--------- (and shipped) I have decided to add these to my list for sale (forgot about the links), when I pre-sold my air shock a couple days ago. The only things that I have left is the rear fender, rear tail light, Almost new rear tire. complete rear wheel Assembly. (click my handle for a pm or my email) Thanks, Jeff
