  1. I know there are a number of aftermarket drivers backrests for the 2nd. gen Royal Star Venture. I am trying to find the name and contact info for the manufacturer of the backrest that attaches to the outside fender bolts for support. The frame of the backrest goes around the outside of the seat, rather than between the passender seat and drivers seat (ala Utopia style). Your help is appreciated. This is also posted in the 2nd Gen Tech Talk. Sorry if you had to view this twice. MickO
  2. First, Thanks Freebird !! You Rock!! I am looking for storage accessories for my 07 RSV, like tank bags or places to put stuff (no storage anywhere on bike) Back seat storage bags...I think you get the idea. Any help???? Thanks, Sky Pilot
  3. Hi folks, I'm new to the Venture side of the bike world, I recently purchased a 2006 Midnight Venture and got to ride it for a week prior to being laid up for surgery (another 2 weeks of recovery to go). While laid up, my friends are changing out the tires, spark plugs and small service work on the bike so that it'll be up and ready to roll when I'm ready. I'm looking at this beautiful bike and have a lot of questions already after riding some 500 miles on it in a week. I hope someone is kind hearted enough to help a lad out. (A) The seat.. I'm 50/50 sitting on the fence about this one. Replace it... stuff it, or what? Not bad for short hauls but I'm cringing at the thought of doing a long haul with it.. I have a Mustang seat on my 1100 VStar.. would I expect the same comfort from a Mustang seat on a Venture? (B) Plastic paint and finish: I've read high and low looking for what people are using to clean up their black finishes on their bikes.. Mine has some blemishes, swirls and wear areas that I think could be cleaned out or polished out.. What would you recommend using or can you point me to somewhere that has more than enough info? Thus far I'm spending a lot of time in the forums reading up on this new bike and I have a ton of questions,.. and I'm eager to get out there riding next week! Cheers
  4. Has anyone used the beaded seat covers from Cycle Crafts? ($17.50) Do you recommend beaded seats? It talks about comfort in warm weather for cooling, are they too cooling for cold weather riding? I'm looking forward to a long trip, and wanted something more between me and my seat. Thanks for any help? BigD

    seat removal

Ok, I am really embarrassed to have to ask this but how do I get the seat off. I ran the batt down trying to start it. now I need to charge it up.
  6. Howdy All, A friend has almost completed the fix on his Gen 1 Venture Royale. Still needs a seat or cover to match. Bike is a tan/brown '84. Anyone have or know where is the best place for this other than buying a complete new seat (very expensive)? Thanks for any help! Barry
  7. Hi Again, Just reading the post about a backrest desparely needed, So now I have a question. My newly aquired 88 VR has a seat that has a place behind the driver to insert a backrest, a lot like my HD. Just wondeering who makes the seat? Saddlemen? if so where can I find a backrest as I do not have it. Thanks in advance, Kim
  8. Hi everybody... Well the new RSV has all of 900 miles on it and the wife & I are going to take it on our first "long" trip. We'll be leaving Kankakee Illinois(about 40 miles south of Chicago) Sunday morning & heading south. Plan on being in Kiln Ms. on Monday afternoon to visit a friend we have'nt seen in 18 years. Then through Biloxi & on to St. marks Fl. on Tuesday. With any luck at all on Wed. we'll be in Mt. Pleasant SC. Thursday night we'll be visiting friends in Princeton West Virginia. Friday..........Sitting in a lawn chair at a campground, fishing and drinking beer (not toooooo much though...he-he). Sat & sun will be the trip home! We are pretty excited!!!! And of course all is subject to change depending on weather & how we feel.I think we're ready. new rain gear, spf 30 chapstick, sun block, luggage(of course),made beaded seat covers out of a car seat cover from Wally-World......Any other suggestions???? Thanks to all....I'll have it on channel 29( RIGHT?) I'll fill you in on the trip after we get home!!!
  9. Still working on my chicken coop saved 87' Royale and I need to find a saddle. The previous owner had approx. 2 " of foam removed from the drivers portion of the seat due to a short inseam. I am 6' 1" and I need the extra height to hopefully remove my knees from the fairing much less the fairing bags. The bottom side seam of the drivers seat is now even with the seat pan so I believe there is about 2" removed. My local shop said they can not get the proper foam to reshape the seat to original specs. What should I expect to pay for a used seat not needing recovered? I have been watching Ebay...what is a 87' seat worth? Once I find a good seat I will have one available to someone who is also inseam challenged, which is in very good to excellent condition and Brown. One other question...are the seats from the 85' and earlier Ventures the same as the 86'-93's ? Regards Dave

  11. While doing a tune up on my 99 RSV, I noticed one of the studs that holds the driver seat on is broken. Have any of you had this problem, and more importantly is there a fix????? I would hate to have the other stud break. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, you have all been a great help with all my questions. I hope I can one day pass some help on to some of you. Thanks, Big Mike
  12. I apologize if this should have been under accessories but it seems to be a typical RSTD/RSTC question. I have a 98 Royal Star Classic where the previous owner added a Silverado windshield, hard bags and a sissybar with pad. I plan to do a lot of solo traveling, so I want to do the following: 1) replace the stock driver seat with my Corbin seat as a solo seat, remove the passenger seat and put a rack in place of that (I believe there was an OEM rack for the tour classic) 2) I want to keep the sissybar in place to attach a Riggpack to but would also like to add a luggage rack to the sissybar. I know it sounds redundant, but the idea is to ride solo (I weigh 314 lbs), have the Riggpack hanging over where the passenger seat was (but sitiing on the rack that replaced it) and still a sissybar luggage rack available for light items. Does anyone know where I can get (or have for sale), the solo rack and a luggage rack for a ten year old RSTC? You guys are such a wealth of info and thank you for all the other things you have helped me with already. Thanx
  13. Hey all as I reported today was the day I picked up the VR down in Fitzgerald Ga. from the govdeals.com auction... I arrived bright eyed and bushy tailed this morning excited about the new ride... Get up leave the motel forget to get gas... thank goodness the Ford didn't mind.. I got to town got gas, picked up some last minute things at the Walmart, and went to meet the Chief of Police and pick up the bike... Met with the Chief ... really nice guy talked a few minutes with the asst. Chief they advised for me to back up to the garage where they held the bike. I backed up and they opened the door and there sat my new ride.. I look across the lot at her in her glory and I see she is got some runs on the lower fairing from the paint job. I thought nahh just seeing stuff from 20 feet away my eyes were playing tricks on me. I move closer see that the runs I saw were indeed runs.. Get even closer see pieces missing, now I am slowing down and looking harder. I move right next to her and she had the left side lower plastic sticking out some. Moved even closer yep plastic was sticking out. Hmm start to look it over more the plastic is missing more where the vent is the vent is broken out. The right side the entire side cover is missing, the front fairing is busted the lower fairing is busted. Where the side cover was missing you could see that the plastic remaining was all broken. Wanting to look at the gas tank to see if it had rust issues I touched the fake tank and it moved. The entire piece was disconnected so I lift it up not disconnected BROKEN. Crap I am thinking reach back to look at the seat to see how bad the connection is broken seat moved. The points the seat connected were broken off and the seat just sat. Apparently the jail convicts had scraped the paint of stating Police and the city name with no regard to the paint. Bike appeared to have been sprayed with a paint can. Side luggage locks would not clamp down on the side covers. Rear luggage scratched all to hell. The tires were decent other then little dryrot. The Class had been disconnected and was not working, the battery is dead which was expected, the stereo was missing button that appeared to have been broken off, the front windshield had some film on it where when I wet my finger I could not wipe it off. Appeared like maybe they used acetone or something to clean it with the last time it was cleaned and then gotten dirty on top of the wipe marks. Chiel saw I was not happy with what I thought I was paying a premium price for on a bike alledged to have 4000 miles on it. The bike I learned from the chief was purchased by the dept in 1991-92 wasn't positive exactly but either way they claim at that time the bike had 2 miles on it. The condition of the bike appeared to have been ridden hard, laided down to rot and then picked up out of the field to be sold. NOT what I felt I was buying. Chief also advised that "when we tried to have the bike fixed at the yamaha shop they were not able to get it running". I told chief I was not expecting a new bike but that at least a bike that needed carbs worked on due to varnish or gumming from a bike alledged to have 4000 miles on it not a bike I was going to have to strip down and rebuild from scratch. He asked me what I would pay for it and I told him honestly... I dont think I want to pay anything for it. He agreed to release me from the sale and not charge me a penalty. This he agreed to since the bike is listed as a 1984 actually is a 1986 and listed as 1100cc and it is a 1300cc. Bottom line Didn't buy it he did tell me he was sorry that I traveled from the Poconos down to pick it up and for it not being what I expected.

  15. After reading how all of these 1st gens are being bought and lots of $ and tiime spent to make them nice again, I had decided to keep my 86 VR, but after spending some time on my new (to me) 05 RSTD, there is no way I will use the VR. That RSTD is waaaay to much fun to ride. So the 86 is in the classifieds again. I had pulled my ad, licensed, and insured it fully planning on keeping it, but It's gonna go. In fact, I was gonna send the VR seat out to buttbutler to do his thing on, but instead, today sent the studded mustang seat out for him to do his thing. I just put it in the classifieds. (deep breath here) BTW, here is the reason that I'm selling. Steve
  16. I just put my new (2000) venture in the garage and started transfering stuff from my 89 venture to find I have more stuff that storage. Does anyone know if there is something like the leather pouches in the front and back on the 1st generation for the 2nd generation bikes? I will need to replace the seat as my better half would like one of the pillow type thrones. Any ideas on where I can find replacement seats? Bob

    Seat removal

Hi, I have a 2002 Venture with a dead battery. I have looked through the owner's manual, and cannot find how to remove the seat. Can anyone tell me (in layman's terms) how to remove the seat so that I can attach the battery tender? Thanks so much, Betsey
  18. Folks: Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with the Hartco seat on the Second Gen Venture. If so, can you offer a comparison to the stock units or other aftermarket seats? Previously, I had a good experience using the Hartco seat on my Honda Valkyrie. This information is being requested with the full understanding that each persons derriere is different. Thx.
  19. I split my fairing to raise the front end back to stock as I got a speed wobble after I lowered it, and apparently I did not fully seat all the connectors for the stereo as it cuts in and out. Grumble, grumble, grumble...... Now I have to split the fairing again to re-seat all the connectors... I might as well run the wiring for some driving lights at the same time..... AND I don't have the time to do it over the next three weeks, so I will be riding, listening to the mechanical music, not Pink Floyd et al..... Grumble, grumble, grumble......
  20. First: I'm not that fat. 225 lbs. No passengers on bike in some time. 35k miles on the bike's odometer. Garage kept, but not temperature controlled, on Long Island, NY. Now... While re-installing a freshly charged battery into my 99 RSV, I noted that both sides of the frame are cracked completely through in the piece that the rear tab of the driver's seat would go into. This piece also has two bolts that go into the rear fender, essentially providing almost all the support for anything over the rear tire (rear seat, trunk, saddlebags, etc.). (See attached scan from parts diagram; I can hopefully take and attach an actual image of this part on the bike another time.) I also noticed the beginning of a 'kink' in the right side of the rear fender, apparently due to the stress of the saddlebag support pieces having to carry all the weight from above. Has ANYONE here had this happen to them? Or heard of other's in a similar situation? I'm kinda bummed about the riding season starting real soon and the possibility of no bike for an extended period of time until this is fixed. Plus, I just sent off the insurance premium and registration fees. Welding recommendations (type, process, who can do it)? Difficulties involved (other than getting the fender and related parts off)?
  21. Ok 2nd gen guys, get ready, something fell off a 1st gen. Well, it appears that when I towed Brad's bike to meet him, I may have lost both side panels. They were very snug when snapped in place, but due to having the seat off and the top tab not being held in place by the seat, they must have blown off, because when he got home, they were gone. It also appears that the way he put his straps on that it would have held the side panels in place if they were on when he strapped it down. I have offered him a spare set I have that are painted purple, but I would like to see if we can find some black ones first. So, let us go on a treasure hunt and see if we can find some black ones for him. Thanks, RandyA
  22. Yes I know its not a Venture sorry But Peg is happy. That matters the most to me!!!! We took it out ridding today and put on 150mi Peg's back did not hurt once. She said it rode better than the GL1500 and the 83 beast was too small for us - me really. Everybody that met Peg knows she is skinny so putting her in the Gold Wing seat made her look even smaller. Now if Yamaha had a seat & backrest like the Wing we would have bought it for sure. The Second Gen. has more leg room we Also like the body style too. But the Wing had more seating room. So we Give up one feature for another I guess you might say. So if you see a Dark red metallic Gold Wing at the M&E or Rallies it will be US outcast... Buddy
  23. Looking through this month's Motorcycle Cruiser and there was an article comparing the H-D Rocker with Yammies new Raider. Both sweeeeeeet looking rides, streeeeetched out and custom looking. On pg 40 there was a few pictures detailing how the passenger "seat" (pad, slab ???) slides out from the back of the seat on the Rocker. If you haven't seen it, take a peek next time your in the corner store. It is unbelievable, looks dangerous as hell. So I took it in to the mrs and asked her what she thought about cruising around on that? "Not in this %&*@#$ lifetime" she says! I think I've spoiled her.
  24. Hard to know exactly where to put this, but after taking my carbs off for the second time, I think that I could do it at the side of the road, which brings me to my point. I'm planning on comming out to Don's maintanence days for the comorodorie, (sp) if nothing else, but I was wondering what I could do to add to the maintanence part of this? Well, now I know: If anyone is having (or had) problems with their floats sticking and running out the overflow, I've got this one figured out. You can use seafoam or tap on the float bowls, but this does not solve the problem, it's a very temprorary fix at best. This is my theory: the ethenol creates moisture, which in turn creates a buld up of tiny, and I mean tiny white crystals on the four points of the needle which contact the ID of the seat and DO NOT slide up and down in the seat lilke they should. I was going to post some pics that I took using my macro but they were all blurry. I took some 1500 grit wet paper and removed the grit on all four needles, (my front left was my cluprit) using magnification, and I'd love to help any of you out with this. Or, I'll take my carbs off and show you what to do. What do you thilnk? BTW, this is on a 05 RSTD. Steve
  25. Will a 2nd Gen Venture seat fit a RSTD? Liking the looks of the RSTD but would like a plusher seat for the Navigator. Her comfort will increase the number of miles traveled.
