Congratulations! that is exactly how my father quit about 30 years ago. He got so sick that he spent a week in bed and didn't smoke one that whole time, so he figured, why not just give them up entirely. here's to a long and healthy life for you.

I've been following this and other 44k threads over the last couple of weeks. Here in Texas most of the major retail auto parts chains do not carry 44K. It was posted that a store NW of Houston called A-Line auto parts carried the stuff. I did a google search on Saturday and found another A-Line store nearer to my home, called them to find out if they stocked it (they did!) and picked up a can that afternoon. I think you're just going to have to do the legwork in your own local area (unless someone else already has) and post your results here. Don't know why the stuff doesn't have a wider distribution. Good luck.

cruise control problem on 05 RSTD

I'd love it if there is a simple fix for this. My 2001 does exactly the same thing. Has since I bought it 2 years ago, just never was high enough on the priority list to try and fix. Now I'm planning a trip later this month and wouldn't mind if I could get it working. -
Halloween changed when the makeup of this country changed. It changed when the real monsters started putting needles and poisons in candy and preying on children in unspeakable ways. I would question the sanity today of any parent who allowed their kids to roam free on Halloween the way my friends and I did 40 years ago. On the lighter side, we had a blast in our neighborhood last night. I live in a golf course community and many of the parents dressed up and decorated their golf carts to ride around with the kids. They traveled in big packs and the kids AND the parents all had a great time together.

Hey Kbay, The only bad part about finding it here in Humble is I didn't get to ride out to Waller and meet you! I went with my plan of half a can and then put about 35 miles on it. Just got back. No noticeable difference yet, but then I am running on just cleaned (the old fashioned way) carbs.

It's a fuel treatment that has been discussed here on the forum. Kind of a Seafoam on steroids! $20 for an 11oz can. I hope it's as good as everyone says. Now that I finally have my carbs cleaned out, I want to keep them that way. BTW, to those that have used it before, I'm thinking only half a can to a full tank should be plenty, right? I'm thinking I'll run one tank through, then change the oil due to all the gunk that should break loose. I'll save the other half of the can and use it again in a couple months. Reasonable?

Thanks for the ideas. I have pretty much decided to do Canyon Lake the first night. After Giddings (on 290) I'll cut south through Bastrop to San Marcos and then backroads to my friend's house in Canyon Lake. Day 2 I'll circle around the north side of the lake and work my way up to Blanco. Then I want to head up to Marble Falls and from there over to Llano. I'd like to look closer at this part of the state as it's an area my wife and I have discussed retiring to one of these days. From Llano I'm guessing 87 to Sterling City and then 158 to Midland. Does that get me onto 158 soon enough to see the windfarm? I'm assuming this is similar to the one south of Odessa near Iraan? Any pitfalls or problems with this route? Any "not-to-be-missed" sights? Thanks to everyone for all the ideas.

For anyone is the Houston area that's looking for 44K, check with other A-Line auto parts stores. It had been mentioned before that the A-Line store in Waller carried it, so I searched online and found an A-Line store in Humble. Called them and YES they stock it. I bought their last can today, but the guy says they try to keep it in stock and it sells pretty good, considering the price.

Well, I’m kind of embarrassed to admit that at age 52, I am finally considering my first road trip on a motorcycle. I’ve been riding various bikes since I was 17, but have never had the opportunity to really get out and go. About 150 miles on a Saturday with friends is the longest I’ve ever ridden. I’ve had my RSV now for two years and have put about 8K on the clock, but all here in the Houston area and nearby countryside. Well, every year for Thanksgiving we travel to my wife’s hometown of Odessa to visit her family. Today she told me that she wanted to go out a few days ahead of me to have some “alone” time with her parents. So I say “cool, I’ll ride out later on the bike then!” My wife is not real excited about my “new” love (the Venture) and wasn’t too thrilled, but I think she’ll come around. So now, if I’m going to do this, I’ve got to do it right. Don’t want to forget anything important or breakdown along the way due to failure to prepare properly. So, any suggestions from any of you “old hands” on how to properly prepare the bike, and myself, for this adventure? The distance is about 560 miles each way. It usually takes about nine and a half hours in the car and is mostly on I-10. That seems kind of boring, so any ideas for alternate routes will be considered. Should I try to do it in one day or is that likely to kill me on my first trip? I could stop one night at friends in the Canyon Lake area, just north of San Antonio. That would split it into 220 and 340 mile segments. As I’m thinking, that is probably the way to go. So, when I leave San Antonio, should I just rip it out the freeway or take a more scenic route. A big chunk of that road has an 80mph speed limit, so any deviation is definitely going to take longer. On the plus side, there are a lot more choices for places to stop and things to see off the freeway. What about safety? I guess there too there are pluses and minuses for each option. Thanks in advance for any and all ideas and suggestions.

Changing a tire is changing a tire. What difference does it make what kind of bike it is? I too bought my RSV out of town from a Harley dealer. I was assured over the phone that the tires were good but when I got there I was disappointed in their condition, especially the rear. I simply told them that if they wanted to sell the bike, they would replace the rear tire. If not, I was outta there. I only had 80 miles to ride, but I sure wasn't going to do it on an unfamiliar bike with a bad tire.

I voted always, but I have one minimal exception. Sometimes I'll jump on and take a quick spin around the neighborhood without it just to feel the wind in my hair. I know I shouldn't, but it's just one occasional indulgence. But if I'm going anywhere at all, even a mile or so to a close store or gas station I always gear up with my full face modular flip-up and my leather or armored mesh jacket. Yes, even in typical Houston summer weather. I'd rather be hot, sweaty, and a little uncomfortable then have a smashed face, or MUCH worse!

I've noticed that my seat is different from most other RSV's. In fact, it looks almost exactly like the seat Corbin sells for the RSV, but it has Yamaha tags on it. So I'm assuming it's a Yamaha upgrade put on by the dealer when it was new. Is it possible that Yamaha sold a dealer installed Corbin seat? I can say that it's very firm, but I've never had problems with discomfort on a ride. Well, I was going to import a photo, but I can't seem to. I think the image is too big, so I'll see if I can't make it smaller and put in in another message. Maybe my description is good enough to someone to tell me if my assumption is correct.

Ever seen a yellow XVZ1200?
Yamaman replied to Sandbagger's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Very, VERY nice. I love yellow on bikes and cars. You did a great job! Now you've got me wondering how a yellow 2nd Gen would look... -
Sounds good. Now that I'm back on the road after she sat in the garage for nearly a year, I'm always looking for an excuse to get out and go. Are you the one that mentioned the automotive store in Waller that sells 44K? Now that my carbs are clean I was thinking of running over that way to pick up a can to keep them that way. Is FM 1488 from the Woodlands a decent road to ride, or just a lot of stop lights?

I really need to get together with some of you other guys here in Houston and see what you're talking about. Mine makes more of a whoooshing or whistling sound at certain rpms, but never enough that it bothers me terribly. As others have mentioned, it seems to be around 60-65 on the speedo in 5th. But then again, my wife claims that I'm going deaf, so maybe it's there but I just don't hear it...

Well, unfortunately, we gotta work to pay for gas, accessories, and the like. They'll be plenty of good riding days over the next few months around here. So how far from Houston is Kinder? Lot's of country roads between here and the LA border, but I haven't crossed into LA on a ride yet.

I was traveling south on US 59 near downtown Houston in the cage with the wife about 6:30 PM Saturday (10/24) when an RSV and an RSTD went by me, then they took the 45 South exit. Was that anybody here?

New to the Venture Circuit as of Yesterday morning :)
Yamaman replied to LilBeaver's topic in Watering Hole
Rick, Welcome and enjoy that beautiful ride. I have the same bike, except that the original owner did a little custom paint work, etc. I'm in Houston and my in-laws are in Odessa, so one of these days I'll probably make that ride. I'll let you know and we can meet up so you can show me the best places to ride up there. Take care. David. -
OK, you guys must have had some wimpy, overweight, out-of-shape flies. Mine were jumping all over the place zipping away at the last split second. No way I could do it in under 40 seconds with those little mini Michael Jordans.

Spark plug question...sorry
Yamaman replied to a topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Yup. 17mm socket. Use a deep one if you can. the standard depth is kinda shallow and if you're not careful you'll bang the ratchet handle on your chrome valve covers. I had to keep lifting up on it, not letting it fully seat over the spark plug tool. But there's not enough room for a 3 inch extension.
