Pros & Cons On Front Tire
hig4s replied to yamahamer's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Generally a wider tire will be better on uneven pavement, rain grooves, bridge gratings and non 90 Degree rail road crossings. Narrow tires will be better around town, slow speed parking lot maneuvers, and in the twistes. Personally I don't have a problem with the bikes slow speed manners and it is too big to comfortably attack any twisties so I will stick with stock size. I may push the forks up in the triplecrown but have not decided that yet. -
Those are exactly the ones I was thinking about mounting behind the clear lowers on the fairing. I was thinking of mounting them so the LEDs show through the clear and hope they also make the plastic glow a little too. I was not planing on removing my stock signals, this would be in addition to the stock ones.

Back Rest for 2006 Venture
hig4s replied to johnnyp's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I have a Utopia back rest on my 07 with a stock seat. http://www.utpr.com/venture.html It folds down for a passenger to get on, here is a pic of my bike http://www.venturerider.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=12225&d=1190299058 -
I'm sorry, I refuse to change oil every 3000 miles, that was a made up number years ago by the oil companies to make more money and use oil faster. No car on the market has a change interval of 3000 miles that I know of. And I can't think of any motorcycle other than full race bikes that require that often of a change either. I'm tired of supporting OPEC. That is why I use a full (non-hydrocracked) synthetic.. Hydrocracked synthetics come from crude oil. Full PAO synthetics are made from synthetic polymers.. While it is true most PAO also come from crude oil, they don't have to as PAOs can be made from non oil esthers or dehydrating alcohols. Sooner or later, when the oil runs out, we will still have full synthetic oils to lubricate the engines of our hydrogen fueled vehicles. OK, sorry, off the soapbox. Not knowing for sure what the actual interval from Yamaha is I will go with 8k using full synthetic. If I was using dino I would probably go 4k. I have doubled the recommended interval using synth on my last 5 cars and went at least 1.5 times the interval on all my bikes, even high performance sport bikes, on my last 7 bikes. Never had an oil related failure.

It must be a Karma thing, any thread on any website that has the word oil in the title goes down hill fast!

I saw the post and was making plans to show up, until my wife reminded me of where we were going. What can you say, you have to take advantage of anything free at Disney.
-
We won't make it, we will be going to Orlando that day. That is the weekend Disney does the Festival of Masters Art show free at Downtown Disney.

If my kid gave me a smart alec reply like that I'd smack him.

Some one on another forum brought it to my attention that the old owners manual, the one we have here in PDF, and the new manual the PDF on the My Star section of the Yamaha web site have different oil change intervals. The old one says every 8k, the new on says every 4k!!! But if you go to the maintenance interval PDF on the My Star site, it still says 8k.. OK, what is that real answer?

They use to say that back when it was so new none of the engineers working for the manufacturer actually knew anything about it. They don't say it anymore because they found out they were WRONG so they just keep their mouths shut. LOTS of new vehicles come with synthetic oil from the factory now. You can change anytime you want. Oil is oil. The only difference between modern synthetic and quality dino oil is that synthetic lasts longer and resists heat better. I have changed to synthetic at first or second (usually first) oil change on 8 of my last 10 vehicles, the other two came from the factory with synthetic. NEVER had an oil related problem. In other words, Koz, switch to synth, I switched to Mobil 1 motorcycle 20-50 at 600 miles on my 07 Venture (because it started to chirp) and the chirp became almost non existant and is still that way at over 6000 miles.

Looks like a transformer. With a more sedate style I could see idea as an alternative to going trike when you can no longer hold a bike up.

How about the stuff both do that annoys,, I hate anyone riding behind me with brights on, or with their HID lights mis-adjusted so they blind me just like brights.

You know after all this, you could just trade in on a new Venture, odds are it wouldn't have the whine, and if it did it would be covered under warranty.

Actually I believe anything over 125cc is freeway legal.

I'm betting with the road king conversion on the V-rod you could use an Electra Glide seat and tour pack to get the comfort level where you want it. I actually thought about it myself before buying the Venture. I just couldn't personally justify the extra cost.

What ever you ride you need to stay around here!! As far as the Harley,, remember the brand new ones have several issues that need to be addressed even before you buy.. To meet EPA they have them running so lean the passenger seat is literally a hot seat. It will need to be re-mapped right away and it should get a better flowing exhaust. Technically this makes the bike illegal for street use. (technically any aftermarket pipe on any motorcycle makes it illegal) And even after you get is set up to run right, it is still an air cooled push rod engine. If you just can handle the problems with you Venture another option is the BMW LT. I know it is a completely different style, but it is a sweet bike. If you insist on a Harley, get a V-rod and do the road king conversion. http://www.partsmag.com/0501/0501-pdf/Project-v-Rod-0501.pdf

OK, my wife's just showed up. She wears a size 12, (sometimes a 10 if they run large) ordered the large. Suppose to be size 12/14 but she can't get them on. Not sure if they were mismarked or run that small. I will be calling New enough shortly. Not sure what they will do because they are already out of XL.

Hand Held CB Microphone
hig4s replied to dddeering's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I didn't think the mic was hot through to the CB from the 5 pin intercom connector if you had the radio/CB set to go through the speakers? My wife and I usually ride with the radio to the speakers and of course the intercom still works. I thought I tried using the CB that way and the mic didn't work, but I have only actually used the CB once so I'm not sure. -
This month's Road Runner Magazine - Great!
hig4s replied to Venturous Randy's topic in Watering Hole
They wrote me a really nice e-mail apologizing for the over site of leaving the Venture out of the article. I was going to buy the magazine until I read the intro to the Victory then I put it back on the shelf. After the nice response from the editor I was back in the book store Monday looking for the current issue. Looks like I'll have to go back in a day or two. -
My personal opinion, backed by 34 years with a cycle endorsement and having been run off the road dozens of times and never once by a teenager, says most people on the road shouldn't be driving and couldn't pass a driver's test in a country that had tough driver's requirements. We don't need to make the driving age older, we need to make the requirements tougher. My son has been driving since he was 15 (with a parent until 16, he is 19 now) and is a very good driver. Better than most adults. But I had him on dirt bikes since he was 12. He has had two minor accidents, neither his fault, both caused by older drivers. One driving impaired, one panicked in traffic in heavy rain. That one caused a 9 car pile up and my son was in the middle. My daughter on the other had I will not ride with, and still cannot believe the state gave her a drivers license. She has had 3 accidents that were her fault. But she is in her 20s and moved out, nothing I can do about it. As far as being 16 once, so was I but neither myself nor most my friends did anything really stupid until we were 18 or 19 and had a little experience. That is when most kids become cocky. And our stupidy lasted through most of our 20s. I have friends now that are in their 50s and 60s still doing stupid things.

But you still didn't show me the study. Just because someone decided to make a law, does not mean they actually had a valid study. The IIHS with a flawed study in hand back in the 80s almost got congress to pass laws banning sport styled motorcycles and to limit horsepower to under 100hp.. They did this by doing a study, picking out the statistics that validated their position, and passed it on to politicians that had no knowledge of motorcycles so did not know it was incorrect. Show me the study!!!

Subjective statement with no statistics or proof to back it up. Insurances companies never break it down by single age groups. They just state that 15 to 20 is the most dangerous group. Should we make the driving age 21? And no one has ever done a study that I can find to show the accident stats for drivers in there first two year of driving that waited until they were 18 or 19 to start driving. There is no reason to believe that raising the age would change the idea that people in their first couple of years are most likely to make mistakes no matter what age they start driving at.
