  1. i'm jealous! I can't get near that mileage... i'm down in the low thirties and I get the big bang on decal after a I roll on it hard... i'm guessing a clogged pilot as well. but I need some help on what to look for. where are the air/fuel screws located?? thanks
  2. can anybody point me in the right direction for some rear passenger arm rests??? will the old gl1500 Goldwing arm rests work on my 88 venture?? thanks
  3. my $.02 about the 230 shinkos is don't do it... i bought my bike last year. i had an 83 and now this 88. i put about 10,000 miles on the bike last year with iron butts and trips with my wife....it came with 6ply conti tour continentals. the previous owner was serious about having a 6 ply tire as these are and i got really good life out of them and they handled really well even up into triple digits where i try to not ride but every now and then on a wide open stretch, you catch my drift... even down to the end the conti on the back was solid... i put a 230 shinko on the back as it was cheap and its excellent in the under 60mph world and in the twisties, but on the highway it sucks. i swear i can feel it tracking left right following the zig zag groove that is very deep in the center of the tire... crossing the pavement joints is unstable and rain grooves make it feel like its on a steel grate bridge... i tried everything and it feels crappy at speed. so it has just under a 1000 miles on it and its coming off. i'm putting another set of continentals on it. i got the new conti milestone for the rear. and a brand new front as well... the tread runs cross ways across the tire and i think that helps. all the tires the guys like on here don't seem to have a zig zag tread down the middle like this 230 shinko i'm going back to the conti's because i know they worked... i would love to try the E3 rear and the avon venom up front as so many guys have said its a solid combo...
  4. i hear you man... i'm 5'6" with 30" inseam and its a struggle. i had Rick Butler do the seat mods and he did an awesome job, but its still an issue with me... i seem to struggle the most when doing "loaded for bear" touring with my wife and i on because i need to bump the air up significantly. we ride in a pretty spirited manner so i need the bike tight for carving twisties and such. i run progressive shocks up front and i have experimented with different spacers, even running no spacers. one person suggested running no spacer up front with a heavier fork oil, like 15wt instead of 10wt. i'm going to try that next beacause it just seems too high with a spacer. its give and take. hard to find the perfect setup... i'm interested in any tips as well. anybody ever try a smaller tire ??? like 140/80/16 instead of the stock 140/90/16 and same with the front??? of course that will likely affect the clearance and cornering so i don't know if thats a good idea...
  5. i have a very nice passenger backrest and the passenger arm rests from my 87 venture ( the ones that mount in the trunk) . i believe the recling parts are all with it as well... i'd like to donate these to someone's cause. they are the brown vinyl ones. pm me if interested. i'd just want a few bucks to cover the shipping. i wanted black and got these and it wasn't worth returning them.
  6. anybody have a windshield laying around that they want to get rid of. i'm looking for one to cut down to make a shorty for hot weather riding. it may even get painted so scratches aren't a big problem either. let me know. thanks
  7. jack, that was a custom job on my old 1200... i don't know much about it. the previous owner had it done. it was sharp though
  8. They will be alot stickier than those 6ply continentals... i've run the shinkos and like the way they gripped the rode!
  9. i have a pair of these 6 ply tires on my 88 and they are fine for highway but in the curves where i like to push my bike i've felt the front end slide on more than one occassion. i don't have a complaint for the rear . i ran a shinko tourmaster before and teh grip was awesome so i'm not a fan of a tire that slides in the curves. its done it on me from 32psi-38psi. just my $.02
  10. last week i swapped pegs and traditional shifter from my 83 to my new 88... and markland floorboards and rocker shifter from my 88 onto my 83 with no problems. hope that helps
  11. markland makes them for sure. had them on my 88 with a rocker shifter and i stole the pegs off my 83 and did the swaaparoo. so they definately fit both bikes. i have a set of marklands that i'm getting rid of, they have some spotty rust but could be polished. don't need much for them. i don't have the rocker. these are the same ones that team up with the rocker but they also work with the peg setup.
  12. anybody have an 83-93 seat they want to sell. must be black. can be either from the 1200 or 1300. let me know and how much you want for it shipped
  13. what you described with the lane change is dead on! i can run 80- 90mph on a staight flat road and feel pretty good, trying to pass a tractor trailor at 75-80mph is like scaring the bejesus out of me. bike snakes and feels horrible. i can even throw the bike in the curves at 5-60mph and feel pretty good, but i can't handle a gentle sweeper at 75-80... gets squirelly then. the bike came with a 130 rear tire which may not be helping at all. new tire is on its way, i'll change it and report back. the back tire is close to smooth in the middle but when you get out towards where you ride in a curve its cupped pretty good, worn pretty uneven on the outer areas. i bought dingy's wrench and greased the kneck bearings and torqued them when i first got the bike. i went through the whole overtighten process and the bike tracked left and right like 2-3' down the road. after messing that up i loosened it up and i believe i have it right, jacked the front end up and the kneck seems and feels right to me, i retightened a half turn and the other day and that made it too tight again so i backed it off a bit and seems good. does anyone actually use the manual spec for the kneck as its crazy light??? or do you guys go by feel? i've looked for cracks down by the shock, don't see any. i've torqued the frame bolts on the right side. i've drained fork oil and i have the progressive springs that came with the bike. i'm running 1" spacers and 10wt oil 5.5" down with front forks collapsed. i checked all the bolts in the triple tree and they are tight, i don't feel any bearing play in the front or rear. i tightened the swing arm bolt. i yanked on the back end side to side and don't feel any slop. the front feels solid when i jcak the front up and pull side to side and up/down. the only thing that seems off is when i put the bike on the rear stand and put my hands on the fork tubes at the seals and lift the bike up and bounce it slightly it feels like something is a bit loose inside the fork, i hear a noise coming from inside the tube when i bounce it slightly. maybe i can get some pics or a video of it. and how i think the triple tree is turned slighly to the left when i ride down the rode. oh and the trunk was a circus trick that didn't make it more than 50 miles. too much turbulance on the back of my head.
  14. guys, i've been gleaning info off of alot of you trying to find answer to my handling woes... read about how tires help and so on. i keep trying but i'm not there yet. when i cross an uneven road surface the bike feels wiggly. i feel it basically at all speeds. its like the bike is hinged in the middle. i have the super fork brace on and a new shinko tour master up front, i'll be putting a new rear shinko on this week. maybe that will help. i've tried all tire pressures and it helps a touch but not enough. i'm convinced something is wrong with the front forks..i've looked for cracks in the frame and don't see any. i've put over 2k miles on the bike and love it but this wiggle is killing me and if i could get this resolved then the bike would be perfect. i know the bike went down at some point. the tell tale highway bar crack in the plastic elbow, the crack in the right fairing and so on. i've noticed the handle bars are cocked to the left a touch and it is likely because of bike going down, i noticed that when i removed the front tire that i thought the right front fork was twisted a touch thus making the bolt hard to remove and reinstall since the alignment was off a bit. i also hear some clunking or some kind of looseness in the fork tubes when i bounce the front end gently when its on the rear stand, but when i grab and twist everything it all feels solid. if i have to put a whole new front end on there, i will. i can't trust the way this thing feels although it does feel pretty good in the curves, but to switch lanes is like gambling with your life. i don't know if anybody is close to me that can coach me or give me some counsel or if there is a tech day that i can get some experts to take a look. any suggestions??
  15. i'm gonna jump in here and try to get the same help. i have an 83, bought it a couple weeks ago and put 2000 miles on it. i love the bike but its unstable at highway speed, pretty much the exact same problem as was described, i have repacked the steering head bearings, retightened, put the heavy fork brake on, put a new shinko tour master up front, checked for cracks, i have progressive springs, i've tried different spacers, put 10wt oil in to 5.5" down from top. nothing helps the unstable feeling at 80mph. i have a bounce at 30-35mph, can't figure it out. tire seems to be balanced so not sure, gonna check for cracks in frame again and try tightening frame bolts.
  16. i was looking for comfort and i don't have the extra $ right now to buy a backrest so i had to get creative. it is comfortable and adds a nice level of wind protection during the 30-40 degree days.
  17. well guys, after a couple of weeks of hard work, lots of research, and a lot of elbow grease, i have this MKI running really well. i just put the new clutch and springs in today and that solved the slipping i was having. my knees are blistered from all the squating and wrenching but it was well worth it. did all the adjustments to the front end, changed and set fork oil to proper height, already had proggressives, new brakes, new condor heavy fork brace, tightened the head bearings with dingy's wrench and put a new front tire on. what a difference in handling from the first nite i rode this thing and had the bars shake me silly. got my new starter on and 4 gauge cables, that solved all my starting woes. relocated rear trunk for some 1up touring this week. hoping to put about 1500 miles on a tour through the appalachians if the weather doesn't get too ugly. all i need is my throttle lock and some highway pegs and i'll be golden. i have some floor boards that go under shifter but i don't like how high the shifter has to be when they're on. can't thank you guys enough!!!! really thank you all. i had to put about $350 into the bike, i had lots of setbacks, felt like 1 step forward, 2 steps back most of the way, but its rewarding. hard to believe this bike is 30 years old. i just couldn't get over how this baby just purred down the road today, just really comfortable especially with the rear trunk serving as a back rest. what a great machine! i'll be in touch with how the trip goes, Tom http://i642.photobucket.com/albums/uu148/DOZER520_photos/101_1269.jpg http://i642.photobucket.com/albums/uu148/DOZER520_photos/101_1266.jpg
  18. i've been playing for 20yrs now... mainly leading worship music for our local church. i own 4 taylor acoustic guitars and they are awesome. i have them in differnt sizes so i can teach the kids on the smaller one. rosewood would be my favorite for the deep rich tones and the mahagony is a warmer tone. i love to play, i find it very rewarding. i'm a big fan of the elixir strings with the nano web coating. they seem to hold a bright fresh sound for a long time and they feel pretty good on the fingers
  19. i would say the triple tree isn't perfectly squared up. it is only slightly off but i'm fussy and do notice it a bit. how do you "square up' the triple tree?? i'll try and post a few pics
  20. thanks guys! i will look into these suggestions. problem is i don't know how easy it would be to match the paint that i have now if i switch any trunk components.
  21. when i run down the road, the bars aren't staight or perfectly perpendicular to the front tire... the left hand grip is closer to me than the right. how do i straighten the forks or front end? thanks
  22. well as i move forward will getting my bike roadworthy i'm researching seat improvements for my wife and i. i've been searching all over the site and see some info, but i thought i just start a thread to streamline the ideas. i have the 83 bike and it seems the rear seat is narrower than say some of the newer ventures. will the seats from the 86 1300 fit onto my 83 1200?? will they be more comfortable?? the rear seat looks like its wider and i think that will help my wife. i'm hoping to run 500 mile days with her and want to make it as nice as possible for her. i'm also interested in a back rest for myself and some kind of arm rests for the rear. let me know what works. i'm hoping to find some more economical comfort versions before i'd go all out russel day if you follow, but let me know what you guys think will help. i've seen some of the higher back rests on the mkII with little arm supports... will they fit onto my trunk or do i need the whole trunk and would that fit onto my first gen? thanks
  23. yes thanks guys for everything, i'm knocking off these issues one by one with your help! can't thank you enough bilko for the exhaust piece! i really appreciate it.
  24. okay guys... vmax 4 brush starter in and 4 gauge wire upgrade and cranky cranky!! finally, victory on the starter!!! next, onto air compressor controller... took circuit board out, followed instructions, resoldered, plugged back in and BOOYAH!!! she works! she pumps, and holds air!!! its a wonderful thing:cool10: onto my front end and handling woes... in light of getting the bejesus scared out me on my ride home from buying the bike, i found it urgent to go over the forks. okay i have the progressive springs so when i took things apart up front i saw a 1" pvc spacer in the tube on top of the springs. i read the progressive instructions and i had the impression that you did not need a spacer if the top of spring if it was within 3/4" - 1" of the top, basically the top of spring being at the bottom of the threads was okay... so why did the previous owner have the spacers in there?? just a preference thing? wan't the front end tighter? and when i collapsed the shocks and measured the oil height the left side that has been weeping was at 3 1/4" and the right side was at 2 3/4"... way too high from what i thought i learned. supposed to be at 5.5" down from top with shock collapsed, right?? so maybe thats why the front end felt like i was sitting on a mideval catapult ready to be launched into outspace when i hit the bumps! i decided to drain all the oil out, being i'm in this far and put new 10wt oil in, being i have no idea what was in it from the last owner. i plan to add oil up to the 5.5" inch mark down from top, and put caps on with out the 1" spacers. how does that sound? thanks again guys!!
  25. for some reason my 83vr has a 130/90/16 rear tire on it... should i replace it with the stock size 140/90/16?? what are the advantages or disadvantages of the two. thanks
