As I continue to knock off items on my winter maintenance schedule, tonight I got to the carb balancing. I bought a Carbtune a few months back knowing that this day was coming. Using skydoc_17's document was the ticket to making this task a breeze. Thank Earl! I read the document a couple of times and located the all of the screws. I was pretty surprised at how far off the carbs were considering that it was running pretty well. 3&4 were pulling so much vacuum that the slides were pegged and 1&2 were way at the bottom. I actually had to do the 1/2 & 3/4 balance first just to get things in the ball park. After going back and forth a few times, this is where I ended up. http://www.raymondstacy.com/carbtune.jpg Once the weather breaks I will put some miles on it and check it again. The gen2 starter is working really well. All thats left is to change the oil and install skydoc_17's drain plug fix.. I should have my seat back from Rick Butler in a couple of weeks. I cant wait to take it for a spin!

I recently went with the 4 brush starter on my Gen1. I got it off of Ebay for $45.00 Its not that it is hard to change but you have to take a lot of stuff off. It was well worth it!

I also found that the code wasn't valid. I couldn't get the final check out button on the web page to respond so I called and talked to Tina. She took my order over the phone and knocked $5 off of the annual cost for my trouble.

Mostly the pins. Thats where the problem was. Check out this thread. It helped me. http://venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=493

Who just paid $87.75 for the chrome vents on Ebay?

Thanks Rick. My bike came with a handful of chrome on it but that piece wasn't there. Ray -

I would have paid $100 for NOS chrome vents but $78 for used with broken tabs and a scrape was a bit much for me. This ring that Mike brought up is new to me. Other than Kevin's picture, I cant find one pic of a Venture that has one. Did everyone take them off or was it option? -

Interesting. The cheaper set may be back up for sale. I have been known to buy two and sell one. -

Prior to re-soldering the pins, my LCD would display the target pressure in seconds. I could feel the bike start to rise and then at the ends of each cycle the relief valve would purge a small amount of air. Now since I never actually reached the target value, that small amount of air was significant and enough to take me back to 0. I even thought that my purge valve might be bad but it wasn't. The 2 biggest changes after re-soldering the pins is that it takes 3X as long to get to the target pressure and now it holds it indefinitely. I agree that both of our problems sound like air leaks. I was certain that mine was which is why I waited until the off season to tackle it only to find that it was actually bad connections. BTW, I never get that lucky. This was a first for me! Ray

I remember Bongobob telling me that they were rare. I guess that was an understatement! I thought about it but it wasn't worth it to me. Maybe because my bike already has the chrome vents and I was thinking that this might be good for a back up set. Oddly enough two different sets showed up on Ebay at the same time. The other set was pretty banged up. http://www.ebay.com/itm/230728628260?ssPageName=STRK:MEDWX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1435.l2649

Think about this for a minute. I thought that I had the same problem as you do. I also thought I was losing air on my 86 VR. Mine was happening anywhere from hours to minutes making me thing I had a bad leak. Fortunately I posted here and found that I didn't have an air leak at all. I had bad solder joints on the controller board which were causing me to lose air. Actually the bad joints caused a a few problems Even though the LCD said I was at target pressure, I never was. This was the big problem because of bullet #2 As soon as the target pressure is reached, the relief valve opens and releases most of the pressure. It takes a lot less time to get to 0 if you never actually reached the target pressure. See bullet #1 It didn't happen until I got deep in to the problem but I eventually received an error code on the display. The problem existed long before the code showed up. It will take you less than 20 minutes to check the solder joints on your controller board. Its a whole lot easier than chasing down air line leaks. Many thanks to this forum! You saved me a lot of time and aggravation.

That would drive me crazy! I have one that you can have if Ray doesnt. -
It looks like a great product but according to the article, that particular company has gone out of business. I wonder if you bought the pieces to do the finish or if you sent the pieces to the business. Ray

How do you lube your joints?
rstacy replied to rstacy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My son and I tend to do a lot of traveling for our model helicopter hobby. http://www.raymondstacy.com/rk2.jpg I am planning on coming if I am free that weekend. I live in Sodus. I have had the pleasure of meeting Jim (Jayceefolly) and Bongobob. They have got to be two of the nicest guys you can ever run in to. I was at Bongobob's July 4th party last year and met a few others as well. I hope that I can make the July rally.- 28 replies

My buddy rode his ST1300 to work 3 days this week. I would have if mine wasn't in pieces. I forgot to add that my seat is on its way to Rick Butler.- 28 replies

Like I didn't see that coming when I titled the thread!LOL Thanks for the help guys. I used antifreeze to reassemble the thermostat housing after changing the thermostat and rings. Next I need the big plastic elbow that I ordered and I should be able to reassemble the bike. All of the fairing work is done. Balance the carbs and change the oil and I am ready for spring time!- 28 replies

I just finished installing a 2nd gen starter on my 1st gen 86 VR. It clearly solved the slow cranking. I cant say that I enjoyed the job. It wasn't a difficult job but you have to remove a lot of parts to get to the starter. I purchased new O-rings for the connections at the thermostat housing. Is a good idea to lube the rings with anything to help with reassembly and sealing? Maybe water soluble Vaseline or silicone?
