  1. Not sure I would admit that in public. RR
  2. Puppy's name is Gilbert RR
  3. However, I am not a native Wisconsinite, therefore, it is for bourbon. Actually, it is a 5 gallon auxilliary gas tank. RR
  4. I've got them uploaded from the camera. Just have to sort them so only the family oriented pictures get posted. Think Sunset Strip, not Provo, Utah Actually, just kidding. All pics are family friendly. However, there are 134 of them and not all are good. The wife has a few items for me to take care of before I get access to the computer though. All in due time. Here are a couple of samples. RR
  5. Made it home about 7:00 this evening. The weather the last couple of days has been fantastic. Too bad all the riding was just squaring off my tires on I80 in Nebraska, Iowa, and WI. Anyhoo, it's nice to be home. 5800 miles total. RR
  6. Wait until Yamaha starts shipping the Tenere'. The dual sport numbers should jump. RR
  7. Made it out of the mountains abt noon. Currently in Omaha and will be home tomorrow. RR
  8. Well, I had a nice day of riding south in I15, to hwy 50 east, to I70 east. It came to a screaching halt just short of Vail. Vail summit to the Eisenhauer bridge is under 'chain up' orders. Once this clears, I should have clear sailing to the home port. 1100 miles MOL, looks like I will need to go into rally mode. I was hoping to be riding thru Nebraska tonight. It is only a little less boring in the dark.
  9. Beaver, good point on the spare key. Also, carry a tire plug kit and know how to use it. Hopefully you wont need them, but I carry a couple of soft straps. If you need to have your bike towed/trailered, the tow jockey won't have them. It might save some serious scratches if you have a problem. RR
  10. Multiple gloves for different weather. Depending where you are going, it can get quite cold at elevations. Good, and I mean very good, rainwear is worth its weight in gold. If you intend to ride at night I would change out the headlight bulb with a Silverstar Ultra. It makes a huge difference vs. the standard dim candle (take along the stock bulb as your spare along with a spare brakelight 1157 IIRC). Take some tools - wrenches thru 19mm, set of hex wrenches, multitool, duct tape(small roll smashed flat), electrical tape. And of course, the most important is a phone and a credit card. Have a great trip. RR
  11. Yes, Salt Lake City. The weather broke enough to make it to Provo. Started snowing harder and there isn't much south on I15. Trying to make out of the Rockies on I70 thru Denver. Some local knowledge of Hwy 6 between I15 and I70 would be helpful. Don't know if it is safe to take 6 or just continue down 15 to 70 at Beaver. Anybody local for some help? (Guess I will check the VR contact list). Things could be worse. Just got a call from my brother who was riding back from LA to Dallas and had a major oil leak. He is stranded on the side of I10 east of El Paso. He has some business contacts that are on the way to rescue him with a trailer. He rides a Honda Shadow 1100. Up till now it has been pretty bulletproof. The Venture has been running like a dream. It is really frustrating to only get 200 or 300 miles a day. If the weather cooperates, I may need to do a Bun Burner Gold (1500 miles in 24 hrs) to get home for work on Monday. Just need to get out of these damn mountains so I can dodge tornadoes. RR
  12. I am sitting in a hotel lobby in Lake Point (just west of SLC) unable to continue riding because of the snow. I can probably make it to town if anyone is interested in catching a cup of coffee. I may be here for a while until I can find a clear way out of these mountains. RR
  13. I sat on a new Venture a few days ago and noticed the levers are fairly wide compared to mine. When did that change take place? RR
  14. Love to take advantage this evening. However, the snow in SLC and WY are keeping me from getting that far east. Grrrrr! RR
  15. Jeff, Guess that means you don't need to borrow my trailer. Yup, ready for the snow to go away so I can ride. It has until Thursday to go away. My first ride starts Friday. Nothing like taking a bike out of winter storage and the shakedown cruise is a 5700 mile jaunt to CA and back. RR
  16. He's one of those French Canadians (see the rate sign behind him). English is a second language. RR
  17. Jeff called me just after putting this up. He came back onto VR to get my phone number and saw the message. All is good. RR
  18. That is truely an IB worthy cockpit. Outstanding. RR
  19. Someone called me this past Monday night to talk about the lights I just added and hit me at a really bad time. I didn't catch who it was. The phone rang just as I had just put dinner on the stove and then a (former) BIL stopped by with a car we were buying. It just snowballed and I needed to postpone the call to attend the immediate things happening in the kitchen. Didn't mean to be rude. Would be glad to chat about the lights (or anything else). It just hit at a really bad time. Give me a call this weekend if you would still like to chat. Will be in the garage (fixing cars) or in the office (doing taxes) all weekend. RR
  20. For a casual pace, 50 MPH overall (including rest stops) is pretty easy. If you really want to get somewhere, you can average 60 to 63 MPH with some discipline. Don't spend time fooling around at fuel stops. Get in, get out, sit there, twist that. You will find speed is not your friend. The additional time required for gas stops negates the additional time saved by a faster speed. Cruising 65 to 70 seems to be the sweet spot. Get over 80 and your gas mileage goes to heck and it will actually slow you down. The real key is to keep you butt in the seat and the wheels turning. If you really want to cover major miles in a short period of time, review the 'Archive of Wisdom' on the Iron Butt website. Not all will pertain, butt there is good advice there. Have a great ride. Stay safe and ride long. RR
  21. Read this write up on Advriders. Great story. An IB run just requires patience, planning, perseverance, and (sometimes) stubbornness. It is always a good feeling when you are done. Once you know you can do it, everywhere in the country just seems to be closer. RR
  22. Thanks for the update Karen. Bob, Say HI for me to the gang down there. Pretty soon they are going to start building a fence on the Texas northern border to keep us Wisconsinites out. Good looking ride. Don't take all the good weather, leave some sunshine and warmth for me. RR
  23. Never a problem trusting my mighty steed. The first I will take it out of the barn will be to travel 5500-6000 miles in 8 days. WI to LA and back. First leg will be 1180 miles in 24 hours (FDL, WI to Tucumcari, NM). Final leg will be 2240 in 48 hours (Burger run - Alice's Restaraunt just south of San Fran. to Moonshine, IL) followed by a casual jaunt of 400 miles home. 2000 (the faster red one) with 80k miles on it. It has never left me stranded (other than crappy D404 tires - that isn't the bike's fault). One week from today will be on the road. I AM SOOOO READY TO GET OUT OF THE SNOW AND RIDE MY A** OFF! RR
  24. Bob, thanks. The pictures are of the bike as packed to take off. For the last cold leg, we devised a method to keep his hands warm. Since he was at me brother's in Illinois, Curt ask for and received a pair of snow pant outgrown by the nephew. Curt cut the legs off the snow pants and ran them around the handlebar controls. He then put several chemical hand warmers down into the 'legs'. It was effectively a redneck set of Hippohands. Apparently, it worked quite well. RR
  25. Well, just got a call from my son and he is home. Said his knees were so cold he went in and immediately took a long, hot shower. 2 minutes later, his knees were cold again. BTDT. High temp today was 27F and he travelled about 200 miles. Glad he made it safely. Will post pictures once I get home. Supposedly, he left the camera for me to put the pics on Smugmug (internet file sharing/storage). He will certainly have a story to tell of his first 'real' motorcycle trip. RR
