  1. Well, the verdict is in, and these headsets are crap. I was pretty stoked 'cause I thought I had every thing sorted out, but when we got ready to take a ride after dinner it took me a full 20 minutes of messing with these f'n things to realize that streaming audio was never gonna work, and neither was wired audio. The problem is once the VOX switches from audio to intercomm, the head sets never switch back. I had to disconnect and reconnect my iPhone 3 freakin' times and it still wouldn't work right. Same thing for the 4th gen iPod Touch. Neither headset would stay connected to either of my iDevices. I have a feelin' the problem is that gawd awful 30 second delay... That's way too long and there is no way to change it. We said screw it and went for a ride. What a mess that was. Under 15 mph the intercomm worked pretty well, but at any speed over that, all we heard was wind noise. Lots and lots of wind noise, and this is from behind a windshield... By this time I was really pissed, and the more we rode the madder I got. Went back home, yanked those worthless things out of the helmets and installed the J & M's. Screw Bluetooth and digital audio. I'm stayin' with wires and analog thank you.... If yer lookin' for a better sound/intercomm system, the Scala Q2 Pro isn't it....
  2. Thanks for the feedback guys. I figured out what the problem was with audio not restarting: The Passcode... I had a pass code on the iPhone so my GFs 2yr old grandson couldn't mess with my phone. Turns out using a passcode keeps the headset from restarting audio streaming.. Same thing for my 4th generation iPod. I was hoping to try out our new toys today, but the weather isn't cooperating.. Maybe in a day or two. I will say one thing, the audio is actually pretty good. I had to add some foam to the ear cups in our helmets, but that was a no-brainer. As soon as I get some road testing done I'll give Y'All an update. Ride Safe...
  3. Well we pulled the trigger and bought a Scala Q2 Pro Multi-Set to replace the wired intercomm/audio system on the '91 VR, and at this point I'm not so sure it was a good idea. Strike 1: Contrary to what I've read or was lead to believe, you cannot stream stereo audio from your A2DP MP3 player to BOTH headsets. Strike 1. Strike 2: Streaming audio to one headset does work, but when you talk, or make/answer a phone call (We have iPhones....), audio streaming stops and does not restart until you unpair and then pair the phone to the headset. This is WAY wrong..... Strike 3: Apparently you cannot pair an iPhone and an iPod to a headset at the same time. I've tried and it doesn't work. This just doesn't sound right because the manual says I can pair a GPS, a phone, AND an A2DP MP3 player, AT THE SAME TIME!!!! The only thing I can think of is the iPod and the iPhone "look the same" to the Scala, so if I pair the iPod first, and then pair my iPhone, the iPod gets dropped.... Our original plan was my GF would pair her iPhone to her headset and I would pair my iPod to my headset. According to what I was lead to believe, we could listen to the iPod, and when a call came in she could answer it and I could keep listening to music. Well, that ain't gonna happen. Did we just make a $250.00 mistake, is the manual inaccurate about the pairing process (I'd think there would be different procedures for different devices.....), or am I doing something wrong? TIA.. And Y'All ride safe...
  4. As a Harley rider (I have an '03 Sportster), anyone who rides a Hog with straight pipes is just a poser, and a stupid one at that. I've had some rather heated discussions about the pros and cons of straight pipes, and in 99.9% of the time, my antagonists refuse to admitt that straight pipes are good for only one type of riding, and that's drag racing. Period, end of lesson....
  5. I'm having some trouble with the driver headset on my '91 VR. At first I thought the problem was in the cable from the headset, but I put a new cable on today, and the problem persists. I had assumed this cable was the problem because my passenger was having issues, so we swapped headset cables and the problem went away. The about a week ago my headset left speaker started cutting out, so I assumed the cable was bad. As it turns out, my problem is the cable from the amp for the driver's headset has an intermittent near the strain relief. I traced it back to the amp, and I believe the last/bottom/4th cable is the one I need to replace. However, other than evilBay, I have no idea where to get one. I could tear into the connector and resolder the wires, but doing so would runing the strain relief and the shroud arounc the female connector.... What's a guy to do? Any input will be greatly appreciated...
  6. The "pop" is the "in rush" current that happens when you turn electronics on. More than likely a filter capacitor on the main power input is getting "old" and can't react fast enough to shunt the voltage spike to ground.. The "humming" you hear is electrical noise from the motor in the tape deck. Again this is probably due to an "old" filter....
  7. Well, actually I have to tear into the GF's Honda Shadow Spirit. A "friend" did some "repairs" before we met, and the bike has run like crap ever since. Then I have a mechanically challenged friend with a Kawasaki Voyager II 1200 that needs new fork springs. Today's ride was excellent. We did a little city riding to make sure the Voyager was behaving, and then we hit I-95. Rode most of the afternoon.... Gotta love it.
  8. I actually started back in February. I put the bike "up" because the rear tire was worn out and not safe to ride on. I had intended to get the bike back on the road (including all of the aforementioned maintenance items) shortly after I got my refund from Uncle Sam. Unfortunately, life and some really crappy weather changed my plans.
  9. I rebuilt the front forks and swapped out the mushy stock springs with Progressives. Instead of using the supplied PVC spacer, I used the stock spacer/piston (with a new O-Ring). I also replaced the damper washers (two wavy and one flat per shock), upper and lower bushings, fork seals and plate seats (which btw have been discontinued....), fork cap O-Rings, EAND O-Rings, and air manifold O-Rings. Also mounted a new rear tire, replaced all 6 brake pads, wired the bike for trailer lights on my Voyager kit, lubed the rear shock links, replaced the windshield, repaired the left saddle bag (fiber glassed some cracks...), replaced the stock H4 Halogen head lamp with a Silver Star H4, lubed all the cables, replaced the front chrome trim moldings, re-charged the Class desiccant, replaced the CLASS manifold O-Rings, and put dielectric grease into every connector I could find.... Took the bike out for a check ride this afternoon, and man is it SWEET!!! Rides like a new bike now. Got back to the house to put the Voyager kit on and that's when the rain started. Got just enough rain to make the roads (and my new back yard) a mess, so we didn't get to ride this evening. Tomorrow should be a good day to ride, so color us GONE!!!!
  10. I had similar issues with my '91. Being a former Navy Miniature/Micro Miniature Repair Inspector/Instructor(NavSea 2M), reflowing the solder connections was a snap and was well worth the effort. My CLASS system works fine..... What you want to reflow are the solder joints where the connector is soldered to the board. Work in a "criss-cross" pattern, and remove the iron as soon as the solder melts and reflows. If you can find liquid flux, apply a little to each joint before you add any heat. The flux will remove surface oxidation and give you a nice shiny joint. Clean with some Isoprophyl to remove excess flux. As an added tip, before you plug the cable(s) back in, apply some dielectric grease to the connector pins. The grease will keep moisture out and prevent corrosion.
  11. Mark: Thanks for the reply. Its the thought that counts. Just so you know, I took the bike off of the lift this afternoon. Man what a difference! The bike actually leans like it should now. I've got some little things to take care of and should have the bike officially on the road by Saturday.
  12. Crisis averted, I got it sorted out. Forks are back in with new Progressive springs. Should have the bike down off the lift tomorrow....
  13. Yep, that's me....... I'm in the process of putting the bike back together after some major work (new front springs, new rear tire, wires for trailer lighting to my Voyager kit, yadda, yadda), and like a fool I didn't take pictures of the handle bar cable routing. The thing is I also tool the steering head out to clean and pack the bearings. I've got the front end back together but I can't remember if the air lines for the front forks go infront or behind the cables from the handle bars. I checked my scanned copy of the FSM, but the pictures are crap so they are no help. Does anyone have picutes of how the front fork air lines and handle bar cables are routed? I will forever be in your debt. Thanks in advance.
  14. My dad (May he rest in peace) was a boiler maker for the AT&SF RR, and a pretty good mechanic. One of the first things he taught me was "Son, a hammer and a chisle are the most expensive tools you will ever buy," and man was he right....
  15. The pictures helped, Thanks. Just so you know, I have a slightly different fastener arrangement. There are two "tabs" with rubber "dampers" that bolt on at the very front of the windshield. Part of my problem is I didn't have the front bolts tight enough. The alignment is a little better but I still have to open up the two back mounting holes... Time to break out the round file I guess.... Thanks again...
  16. I/m getting ready to start putting my '91 VR back together (doing forks, brakes, tires, yadda, yadda) and one thing on the list is replacing the wind shield. I found a Slip Streamer on evil bay, and couldn't resit the price. Its a nice looking piece of Lexan, but it doesn't quite fit. I can get the front bolts in, but not the ones at the back corners. The holes in the new shield don't quite match up, and I'm wondering if there are some parts (rubber dampers, bushings, or what ever) missing. I wouldn't be at all surprised 'Cause while I was doing the tear down I found several items that were "shade treen engineered. (God how I hate some "mechaincs"....) What would really help is if someone has some pictures of how the fasteners should look with the shield installed. Thanks in advance....
  17. Looks are subjective so I'll cut you some slack, but reducing unsprung weight? And each device weighs how many OUNCES? If you're gonna make a recomendation at least keep it real.....
  18. Been "off-line" for a while, so I'm jumping in late. Be that as it may, what you are asking about is "lifting runs" and "lifting pads." This happens when you apply too much heat to a printed circuit board conductor. What happens is the excessive heat causes the run to "de-laminate" because the expoxy has been "over cured". A precursor to delamintation is "measeling" which is typified by the appearance of small white cross-shaped spots in the fiber glass substrate. The "cross" appears because the fiberglass is woven. Soldering "guns" are a big NO-NO when working on electronics. Firstly, the tip temperatures are way to high. Eutectic solder (63/37) melts at 361 degrees F. Any thing above that is wasted. Second, guns are difficult to control and the tips are way to large. Fiinally, and most importantly, the tip of a soldering gun is actually the secondary of a transformer, and as such it can and often does blow sensitive electronic components. With that said, and speaking as a retired Interior Communications Chief and 2M Inspector/Instructor, the only thing a soldering gun is good for is degausing old CRT color TVs.....
  19. J&M makes headsets for about a C note ($100.00).
  20. You have a PM.....
  21. I'm starting to put together my winter project list, and one thing I would like to do is add rear speakers to my '91 Venture Royale 1300. A riding buddy has a Kawasaki Venture XII that has some sweet looking speakers mounted to the tour pack luggage rack. I'd like to do something like that, but I'm open to suggestions. TIA
  22. I just checked the OEm parts list at my local dealer, and the part numbers are the same. Thanks....
  23. That's a little odd. I've ridden on the back, and I can see kist fine. My question is, how tall are you? For the shifting issue, it's all in the technique. I make it a habit to shift as smoothly as possible and never "dump" the clutch. It takes some practice, but the pay off is worth the effort.
  24. Will a left side electronics enclosure (cassette, intercom, etc.) from an '84 fit a '91? TIA...
  25. Roger that. I have the service manual in .PDF format....
