  1. Hey, me and Schooter- - we went to separate schools together. . . I'm either going to fix these stupid carbs or take them to a shop. No Pilot action, bike runs great at higher speeds. I even kicked around the idea of a 2 BBL and a common intake. I have some carburetors and a welder.

  3. I bought a used helmet in 1983 - -if it were 8 years old then, it is 35 years old today. The foam is still there, the shell has not cracked, and it's been painted! I only kept it for auto-cross, I have a new HJC for riding. My point- a 4-6 year old helmet won't show age deterioration.
  4. And now that I thought about it- - Tape a piece of cardboard to your side panel. Do the above measurements, and draw a line using a plumb line. Next, get 5 guys to help set the bike on a block, now rock the bike backwards to find the tipping point. Draw a vertical line to the mainstand pivot. Where the 2 lines intersect is the EXACT CENTER of gravity. Each line was the balance point at it's "level" or orientation.
  5. All you have to do is put the bike on centre stand and weigh the front tyre. Then measure the distance. Divide by the total "book" weight. I'll make up some numbers- - If you found 50 pounds 3 feet ahead of the stand on an 800 pound bike, the stand supports 750 pounds, and the fraction is 5/75 of 3 feet, which is .19 feet forward of the stand. ( sound right guys??) You would have to lay the bike on it's side to get the vertical CG, I think.
  6. This just In- - I found a deal on Craigslist for 2 1984 Ventures for $300 I bought them for $200 !!! One is a titled bike with key, bad 2nd gear, somewhat dismantled. The other is a parts bike, stripped of bodywork. No carbs, 2 seats. Now I am sure I have the parts to finish off my '88 VR Pics soon, maybe ??
  7. An update and good news, Finally met the adjuster. Things are looking better, he suggested getting a POD to save any valuables, and photograph my losses as I tear into the shed., big shed. Due to the burn ban, the insurance may be generous, as there is already legal action. He was also impressed that I have lots of "before" pics.
  8. Hello all, I had been running my business and storing equipment at a friends 5 acres, and 2 months ago bought the place. The neighbor had a little camp fire, thought it was out. The grass was brown and dry from frost. It seems he works out of a small shop. I'd love to be able to make something like this.
  11. If Canada is cursed with alcohol in the gas, StaBil now sells an alcohol formula. It would be best to get fuel from a marina with NO alcohol. Fill 'er up ! Run the engine after the oil change. No real point in doing the oil change if you don't circulate the old, acidic oil out of the bearings, right ?? Since even stabilized gas will evaporate, draining carbs for long term storage makes sense. Filling the carbs with pure lamp oil would keep moisture from condensing inside. "fog" the engine running until it dies to coat cylinders, valves, inside of exhaust. If you squirt too much oil in the cylinders you could blow a head gasket. You could cork the 1 st Gen's mufflers. Bike on centerstand, decrease tire pressure to 20 LBS. Remove battery, store on a tender indoors. Spray the bike down with furniture polish or your favorite silicone spray, cover with a bed sheet, then a breathable cover. Some people store their seats indoors claiming the freezing degrades the material, but what do I know- - I'm in Florida !!

  13. Thanks to MBrood for walking me thru the ignition pin-out and cleanup. It fires on all 4 now, and if needed, I can do a more complete job later. Why would anyone put all those wire connectors under a battery? I took the plug caps apart for cleaning. Everything got wire brushed. 2 of the carbs flooded and one leaked, so they had to come back off. I thought I was so good I didn't need to bench test my work. Why waste ten minutes, right?? What kind of Space Alien fingers does it take to put the hose back on the airbox !! This thing is FAST ! Smooth, Quiet, and very comfy ! Fresh gas and a 60 mile ride ! Now for fine tuning and plug reads. And to finish assembling the 150 piece fairing !

  15. I've been sticking magnets to my filters, or inside filter housings for 15 years.   17. Hey- - THANKS for all the support and feedback guys !! I appreciate the pin-out that was sent to me. For now , I'm gonna goop the diaphragms with liquid electric tape I found the link for the aftermarket diaphragms. Brand new plugs BTW, new tires will come as needed. The bike will be a Canary Yellow and have a Headlight Modulator. Some extra visibility on the butt-end also. Biketoberfest at Daytona anyone ??
  18. Yes, it's an ugly shade of Maroon that only looks good in the showroom. All valve clearances were within normal range. (all 16) And the carbs are apart, thanks to a Hitachi impact driver. The insides were reasonably clean, with a reddish stain, and very little actual sediment. I removed the Pilot plugs with a drywall screw. A trip to my favorite junkyard produced a tall windshield a side cover and a mirror for $60. so I pretty much have all the parts now. Then there's cleaning up the crusty electrical connections and getting that other coil firing. Thanks Yamaha for mounting the ignition box UNDER the BATTERY!! This is like work, but slower . . .
  19. After cutting, I finished the top edge with a cut-off disc in an angle grinder, followed by hand sanding with a foam block sander. You can then get a factory look by wiping with acetone, but I'm not that brave !
  20. '81 to '83 Seca/Maxim rims?? Midnights were gold. Virago works. '82 1100 Maxims also. But what did you use for axles?? You didn't just use the factory axle welded to some stuff?? Would that work? I can't even sleep now !!
  21. On a recent 300 mile ride with 9 big bikes, 3 different vehicles insisted on merging into our group ( on 3 different times). One was a guy on a scooter that had to pass half of us, then merge thru to turn right !! Tell your inexperienced riders to expect a merge. Then there was a big turtle I didn't see, as the group was in a gentle bend, and nobody reacted or signalled. ( I didn't hit it). I would have appreciated a honk or a wave. If you are following one second behind the next guy, you are almost just as blind to road obstructions as following a SUV by one second.
  22. I know I'm posting on an older thread. . . Do you guys know if you pull the shim with a magnet, you magnetize the shim? Then tiny iron particles stick to the surface, grinding away the cam?? Then with your shim sharing program, you are putting your magnetized shim in your friend's motor? Apologies if this has been covered, or if I sound "anal".
  23. Thanks DANOB11 and 6M459 for the tips. Carbs are off. All 4 diaphragms have multiple holes. Coil #2 does not fire. Still no compression test. Yet. Valve covers off. Shop manual downloaded. Work in progress. . .
  24. At least you guys know where the sound comes from. Straight cut gears on a clutch basket make a serious racket. On the XJ forum , they think it comes from the bevel gears at the front of the driveshaft. The middle gear.   25. The hot set-up for brakes is diagonally milled grooves, that don't go all the way thru like slots do. They vent brake pressure, increase surface area, scrape the pads, and don't decrease strength (much).
