  1. Still can't find those Additional Options listed anywhere. Perhaps they can't be pre-set. Might just be a case of wishful remembering.
  2. I think I remember there is a way to set the default options that appear checked below a PM message. There are a couple of options I normally un-check but sometimes forget to do which is kind of annoying.
  3. That's pretty much me too with exceptions. I just bought my first cellphone 2 weeks ago after thinking about it since just before going to Cody. Thought it would be a good idea to have one for emergency purposes but never did get one at that time. Anyway, I bought an old iPhone 3G from a friend for $50. He got it unlocked for me so I can use any SIM so when in Canada I use the Speak Easy SIM sold by 7-11 stores for $10 + minutes and when I go to the US I can get a SIM from Wal-Mart or somewhere else. The Speak Easy has a no contract option with minutes added that do not expire for a year. I'm finding uses for this old technology smart phone. It has Wi-Fi so whenever near a free source I can do email and surf the Internet, neither being of much importance but I can if I want. What I have found most useful is a weather app and grocery list app and of course FreeCell to fill in time when necessary. I have missed bidding on a couple of eBay items in the past because I could not be at home when they came due so that may be another perk of having "smart" capabilities. The iPhone also has Bluetooth and MP3 abilities which will likely be useful while riding my Venture. Just thought I would throw another perspective out there for consideration.
  4. They are indeed a PITA but there is a solution. There are chrome lock T hangers available for about $60/pr but a better method, I think is to get a couple of small crescent wrenches for a few bucks each. When not in use they can be left on the lock as a decoration.
  5. That's how I grew up too. Seems to me our parents were the green ones though while we Baby Boomers became the super consumers who created all the wasteful practices that need to be corrected today. Just sayin.
  6. Getting onto the center stand can be a bit difficult. It takes some strength but mostly it is a technique. What I do from the side stand is step on the center stand pedal so the left side hits the ground then rock the bike up so the right side of the center stand is down too. Here is where the technique comes in, while pushing down on the pedal lift up on the left passenger hand rail while rocking backwards. This uses your body weight on the pedal as a lever and your leg muscles to help lift the bike. Takes some practice. It's easier if you are 200 lbs and strong but I've been told even little people can do it but probably they will need to refine the technique. To start with, it is just hard to do. I hear it really helps to drive the bike onto a piece of 2x6 before trying to do the lift. However, never having done it this way I suspect you might also want to have a second piece of 2x6 to put under the side stand in order to keep the bike from tilting way over. To lift the bike with an MC jack, roll it under from either side depending on which side you want to work on then jack it up. The trick here is to find the balance point. The arms will contact the header pipes which is OK. To get a balance, I think the back arm of the jack should be just in front of the center stand.
  7. That's about it. Losing the headlight, even in the daytime is traumatic to say the least. I'll be working on it tomorrow. Thanks for the upload, that will help a lot.
  8. I have read about the CMS headlight issue but don't remember that it also affected the dash lights. It's good to know since I also didn't know the start button turned off the dash lights. I'm planning on taking the start button apart this weekend. This also has encouraged me to get some auxiliary lights that are directly wired through a switch. Thanks for the hint.
  9. This morning when I went to start the bike the headlight and dash lights were still out. As I backed it out of the shop the headlight and dash lights came on with no help from me. Nice!! I surmise the problem was the start button since the only thing I did last night was to spray it with electrical cleaner. I never noticed the dash lights went off along with the headlight when starting. Life is indeed a long term learning experience.
  10. Stopped at the grocery store after work with everything working normal. Came out, fired up the VR and no headlight and dashlights no CMS backlight. Engine started OK, turn signals, tail light and brake light were working OK too. Checked the fuse box found no blown fuses or weak or corroded holders. Wiggled and pulled the start button. Also checked the headlight bulb which was good. Are the headlight and dash lights connected in some manner or did I win the lottery and get two problems at once? I'm at a loss. Any ideas? I need to ride this thing to work tomorrow morning.
  11. Evan, I can't weld. It looked to me that the repair you did while on the road was to the rear of the collector where the muffler attaches. My problem is with the front end of the collector where it attaches to the forward exhaust header. Actually "headers" would be more accurate. The right one failed, cracked all around. It had been repaired previously with one of those stainless wire mesh bandages and the left side while it is not leaking yet has also been repaired. I think I will need to pull the collector and get a coupling welded on each side that will accept the header pipes. The most unfortunate thing with all of this is last week the rear header pipe on my Virago broke just before the muffler so I have no alternative transportation with both of my two old bikes down with exhaustion. I've been planning on modding the exhaust on the Virago to duals, one on each side. I have the mufflers but need to get the rear header pipe modified to go out the left side. This needs to be done so the Virago can be my transportation while I re and re the carbs and set the valves on the Venture. That leads me to doing a quicky patch on the Venture exhaust to get it in reasonable working order so I can get to work on the Virago so that I can then get the work done on the Venture. Ain't life grand. I was thinking of wrapping some thin sheet metal around the break between the collector and the header pipe along with some muffler cement and a couple of hose clamps. That's the theory and hopefully it will work well enough until the Virago gets back on the road. I'm certainly open to alternative suggestions.
  12. Had another look at it and my exhaust is broken on the front end of the collector so I guess it would not have helped anyway. I'll stop by CCT tomorrow and see what they have to offer.
  13. Just discovered tonight that my VR has the same problem. Anyone know what size the coupler is?
  14. I bought an LG 42" LCD yesterday from Future Shop and was told by the salesman that most factories are stopping production of LCD TV's so if a replacement is necessary during the warranty period the LCD TV would be replaced by an LED TV. Mostly I don't go for extended warranties but that sold me on it. I'm too easy.
  15. Good thing there isn't. Tried lifting the tab with a screwdriver but then could not get an effective grip to pull on it. Thanks Gary.
  16. Passed a MkII on Dallas Road on Thursday. Couldn't see very well due to the blinding sun. Looked like it might have been Kevin in Victoria. Not too many MC's wave at scooters.
  17. I'm trying to get the TCI connector plugs out. They wiggle but don't want to come out. There is a tab on top of the plug, is it a latch that needs to be lifted or do I just need to pull harder?
  18. Cruisin the roadstercycle site and found this fuel injection info: http://roadstercycle.com/yamaha_vmax_fuel_injector_cv_car.htm Also found a Shindengen mosfet R/R kit: http://roadstercycle.com/Shindengen%20FH012AA%20Regulator%20upgrade%20kit.htm
  19. Even though it looks like it might, drag and drop does not work here. In order to attach a pic to a message, on the reply page look near the bottom in Additional Options where you will find a button "Manage Attachments". Clicking the button will open a dialogue box where you can browse to the pic on your computer which will than get uploaded to the site with your message.
  20. Mary and I were in Las Vegas for a week last March. We stayed at the Monte Carlo which is fairly central on the Strip. We mostly walked everywhere, just to see the sights. After the first couple of days got a bit tired of hoofin it and took the bus - RTC. Found out it's much less expensive to get a day pass so you can just get on or off when you want. We are not gamblers either but we had a blast on the penny slots, spent $120 between us, money well wasted. Went to all the casinos on the strip some of them are simply amazing examples of architecture. My favourite was the Bellagio which is where you can see the fountain dance to music. Second favourite was the Venetian. Went to Fremont Street for half a day, which is the Old Las Vegas Strip that I had originally visited back in the late 60's. It's kind of seedy compared to the new Strip but worth a look I think. Saw Phantom of the Opera, tickets included with our room and Cirque du Soleil - KA, bought tickets from a Tix4Tonight booth, there are several on the Strip and seemed reasonably inexpensive. Everything in LV is quite expensive, which is somewhat expected. Best food deal found was an open air patio BBQ place not too far from the HardRock Cafe on the other side of the road clse to a giant Harley Davidson motorcycle sign. Can't remember the name of it unfortunately. Last day took the RTC out to Henderson on a half day trip. Tried to talk Mary into renting a bike for a day trip out to Hoover Dam but she didn't want to. That was before she found out she really liked riding on my VR. Oh well, you can lead a horse to water but... We had a pretty low key trip to LV but thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
  21. Thought about making a tripod hoist out of 3 2x4's? That is what most of the guys used to remove their car engines back when I was a kid. Depending on the size of what you are going to lift and where it needs to be lifted, a bipod hoist might be even better. Found a pic of what I was thinking... well, sort of... You likely won't need the tank. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:M32-ARV-HVSS-latrun-1.jpg
  22. Essentially the same system came on my VR except it uses braided boot laces for the cord. They are a bit of a PITA when it comes to putting the lid back on because the line usually sticks out and has to be tucked in. I was thinking of getting some chain to replace the line as it would more likely collapse onto itself as the lid is being put on. It was over a year ago that I had the thought and have had it again on numerous occasions since then but still haven't gotten around to making the change.
  23. Unfortunately no magic button available since the display screen is printed with either psi or kg.
  24. Thought I better finish this thread off. Turns out I was having a brain fart, if not a hemorrhage so it is no wonder no one knew what I was referring to. Turns out the red connector I was looking for was on the cruise control dash that mounts on the steering head which, of course was sitting out of sight on the bench at the time. Sometimes life is not like a box of chocolates.
  25. Before I talk about my HID install I want to voice my appreciation and thanks to FlyinFool for this post with all the details and pix because it inspired me to venture ahead. Thought I would be doing the install today but it is a much bigger job than expected. I have the all the parts necessary to install HID in two headlights with a Hi/Lo H4 LED in place of the OEM headlight. The LED will likely only be useful as a DRL and I hope it is adequate but won't know until it is installed. The main harness needs to have a normal H4 connector spliced in to accept the LED. The relay and connector harness is meant for a car and so the proportions are wrong to fit a bike so will require rearranging. Also the connectors at the headlight end won't fit through the wire hole so the headlightwill need some attention as well. The good thing about doing an HID conversion this way is that there should be no issues with starting as well as double the light output. Did a single HID conversion on my Virago two weeks ago which works great. No RLU or CMS issues there. Just need to hold down the start button before switching the ignition on. KISS.
