  1. I've regressed backwards, so that problems like this have no consequence to me. Muzzle loading fer me!!! http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o221/mt_bigfoot_preacher/FRONTIERSMEN%20CAMPING%20FELLOWSHIP/dan_mountain_man.jpg
  2. The FJR 1300 is another bike I definately have considered. I like them alot! Still a bit out of my $$$ I really appreciate all the answers I've gotten on this...you guys are great!! I'm definately gonna have a look at the '92 this next weekend. And yes, I do like the larger bags, the towing capacity, and the bigger engine (without the tranny worries). I too feel like the 2nd gens are to 'cruiserish' (for lac of a better term). I want something thats comfortable to tour on, but yet is nimble enough to buzz around all the back roads we have out here. You can get lost for days on end, and not even leave the county. We've got the ocean on one side, and the mountains on the other...and lots of valleys in between. Ride on dudes!!!!!
  3. Ya go to the largest motorcycle gathering in the WORLD...and we get pics like this!!!!????... http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a200/RonnieY/Sturgis%20Two/DSCN1855.jpg hahahaha....looks like you had a great time!
  4. Silly man... trailers go BEHIND the bike...not under it! ....unless it's broke down. But this is a Yamaha....they don't break down!!! It's a motorcycle.....ride it!
  5. AMEN to everything stated above. My thought is...why does this seem to happen??? Here's a guy, who got a break and made it to the bigtyme while he was still quite young. Got to build some wyld bikes, and he's riden all over the country on 'em. Made himself into a very rich man, doing a job most hope to just make a living at. Even in this slower economy, he's still as busy as ever. I saw him at a bike show, and he was treated like a rock-star! And now he's thrown it ALL away. It's all gone! The bikes, the women (heh-heh...specially in jail), the rides, the money, the work, the fame! What a sad, sad waste...not to mention if he can even sleep at night now from what he's done. And how ironic is it that this bike builder hits and kills a guy on a bike...while driving a cage...??? But not that I give 2 hoots...anybody driving drunk deserves worse!...and to kill someone while drunk........he's lucky to not be facing a firing squad!!!!! (I do think it's kinda funny that he'll NEVER drive again...unless he moves to another country)
  6. WOW Owen...that's a great repair job!...especially with rattle cans! of course, a person could always try my route with rattle cans..............FLAT BLACK!!!! http://c2.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/97/m_b6e076470d9d783044fc0ce00f6e62cd.jpg
  7. Which I think is BAD! Lower center of gravity = stability! Look...you're towing it behind a motorcycle anyway, which has it's wheels in the center of the towing path. You'd have to actually TRY to bottom this thing out. I LIKE IT! It looks very similair to something I've designed for myself, and out of the same materials too. I also like the taller tyres...and it's got a torsion-bar axle...which is awesome!! I'd love to mount my Kwik-Kamp box onto a chassis that looks like this...that would be ideal! (I hate the tiny wheels mine has.)
  8. NOPE!....other than watching them go by from the sidewalk!! Best stay home.
  9. As these are already sold, then I feel like I can post this without hyjacking this thread... I have a beautiful set of lightbars for BOTH the top box, AND for around the saddlebags as well. They are almost identical to the ones posted here, except that the lights are not LED's (sorry). They're the rectangle lights with chrome outter rings. The chrome on them is in good shape too. These came with my bike, and are definately NOT my cup of tea. I've also got the matching lightbar that goes around the rear bumper of my Kwik-Kamp trailer that I'm gonna sell too. Now THAT one is in beautiful condition!! I see about getting some pics for ya's.
  10. More Imput....awesome!!! Once again...I am NOT a Gold Wing guy. I had one, and I have ALOT of friends that have them (all types too...15's, 18's, trikes)...and as I was saying I think they have not only a boring ride, but I think they're uncomfortable...especially the 18's! There's no room to stretch out. Your legs are confined to one spot, (I'd probably not care for a Beemer for the same reason). And sure you can put Markland highway pegs on 'em, but I find those uncomfortable too. (had 'em on mine) As to the linked brakes thing...I HATE those too. (I've disconnected them on my Venture, and made mine a true dual-disk front, and a foot powered rear.)...and this I like. But thanx again for all your answers!!
  11. I too must have hit 80 or 85 at least a few times...mostly when passing somebody up. I don't cruise that fast any more... even if I don't have the trailer on. Once you've paid your lot of tickets...it actually DOES work at making you change your bad driving habits B'sides...when I'm on my bike, I'm out to enjoy my ride. No need to hurry anymore.
  12. First off...I'd like to thank EVERYBODY for responding to my question thus far. I will clairify a few things though, which may help answer YOUR questions about what I'm wanting to learn on here. Yes, I do know that the '92 IS a 1st gen....even though it has a slightly bigger displacement over my '83. The bigger bags are a HUGE plus to me! (sorry...bad pun) The stereo means NOTHING to me, but a good intercom IS important. (we talk ALOT while riding What I'm wanting to find out, is does the 2nd generation ('99 and UP)...ride any better, handle any better, and does it preform any better OVER the 1st generation models ('98 and earlier)??? As I've stated, I don't care for the looks of the 2nd as much, however (and I'm in COMPLETE agreement with Freezy here, as I'm also a previous owner of a 1500 Wing) that the 1st gen stole it's basic looks from an early Wing. I just can't stand having something that sidewalk dummies THINK is a H-D, when it definately is NOT!! But (oddly enough)...cosmetics mean NOTHING to me over rider comfort, handling...etc. MONEY$$$$ is a BIG issue with me!!! I'm still a working stiff, and do not have the bread to shell out for something newish at all! I have several bikes, but everything I own is a Rat (as pointed out on another thread). I want and need something that I can comfortably pull a good size trailer with, and can ride me and my wife comfortably on 600-800 mile days. I'm a pretty good size cat, so leg room is mucho importante' for me. And I love the sportbike handling that my '83 has also, as we have the funnest riding roads out here! I did have a beautiful 1500 Wing last year (for 2 1/2 months!). It was smooth, stable, reliable, super quiet...and BORING as hell!!!! But it did not handle anything like the Venture, plus the V was more comfortable for us. so, bye-bye Wingy! OK...thanx again for your feedback...it means alot to me. Now...get off the internet...and go RIDING!!!!
  13. I have no problems pulling a trailer...and have gone through a few 'panic stops' with it too. I tend to load mine up pretty good too, and have just upgraded from my old Trav-Lite, to a super nice Kwik-Kamp!! Some folks think that pulling a trailer is nuts behind a bike. To them I say..."it's probably best that you NOT do it then". and some folks think its just plain nuts to RIDE A BIKE!!!........and to them I say..."it's probably best that you DON'T RIDE A BIKE then!............easy enough, huh?? Here's my old set-up from last year's trip to Bonneville Speed Week... http://c3.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/51/l_b12d8c107a0c9812a5021a5cbecfcc3e.jpg
  14. Hi all. I sure love my old '83 1st Generation Venture. what a great bike! runs great, pulls awesome (I do pull a trailer), and handles fantastic! (I have 3) I'm considering moving onto something a bit newer, because now that the kids are grown, my wife & I are getting back into cross country trips...like we used to...woohoo!!!!...and are considering something a bit newer (for many reasons) I have a guy out here that has a very nice '92 with all the bells and whistles...OK... but I haven't been able to find much in the search about... "exactally...what's the difference (other than styling) between the 1st generation Ventures, and the 2nd generation units???" The engines and running gear are the same....right?? Believe it or not, I can't stand the Harley knock-off look of the new ones...(and I own 2 H-D's) Do the 2nd generation models handle much differently?? ride?? Weight & balance??? I KNOW there are a number of folks on this board that have ALOT of experience with both of these bikes...what do you guys think??? or can you just point out a link to a thread that will answer this?? (I'd rather learn all this NOW...before I spend a bunch of $$$)
  15. We don't believe a word you say!!!...(better throw a pic up here post-haste!!) (sounds like fun!)
  16. WOW...that's the very same bike I'm looking at right now!!! if I lived closer, I'd be all over that!!!!!!
  17. well...I don't have any good pics of mine on my computer, but this is my son's bike... http://c4.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/27/l_c30c60dfaa044634beccede118731957.jpg and here's a few others... http://www.geezers-uncaged.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/rat-bike1.jpg http://www.ratbike.org/albums/dhr_2005/best_rat_2.jpg I guess you could call them, "extremely user friendly!"
  18. hahaha....OK, OK....ya got me there! and to "LilBeaver"... first off...thankyou for the kind words. I've been at this game for almost 30 years now. I haven't updated my website in nearly 6 years...(my web guy moved). There's not much pinstriping on there because when you take a pic of it, it hardly shows up unless it's got a strong contrasting colour, or is big and bold. So my website shows more of the big stuff. And altho I do work on everything...I do specialize in work on big trucks. But you DID make a very very good point! One of the FIRST things I do when I meet up with a new customer is to ask them "what direction would YOU like to go with this job?? Are you looking for graphics, pinstriping, or something else??" (frankly, I'm humbled and ashamed by missing this point on my original post) I should know better....(sorry) I also admit I got alittle 'mean' about the 'kids cars' comments. It's simply that I've seen and know so many pinstripers out there that do such incredibly awesome work, and that you won't need to refinance your house to get the work done. And with the economy as it is, many of them would be more than happy to give an enthusiastic customer a nice job for a very reasonable price. This is why I have a hard time understanding why someone would go anywhere else. You DO want your bike to look cool...don't you?? I also Hate the fact that anyone can buy the stickers, and have the same thing as the guy right next to him has. (I have 2 vinyl cutting machines at my shop...but I mostly use them for truck lettering and paint masks) Anyway...sorry if I've hyjacked this post! I really did'nt mean to offend anyone. Most auto parts stores carry the pinstripe decals if that's a route you'd wanna go. Another place to look is auto paint supply stores...most cities have them (check yer yella pages) Clean any waxes off THROUGHLY before doing anything...and have fun! again...please show some pics of whatever you DO decide to do. (wanna know sumthing funny......EVERYTHING I ride is a RaT!!!)
  19. I'm a custom pinstriper by profession. Yea, you can save a few shackles by buying the stuff at the auto parts store... but isn't the point to try and make yer sled stand out and look BETTER than the rest??? Those stripe decals are made for kids cars who don't know any better to what looks good or not. They're cheap in price.....and they look CHEAP TOO!!! Like was said earlier...find yourself a professional pinhead to stripe it for ya. It doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg. Tell the person how much you've got to work with, and let them do their thing. Bike rallys are a good place to find custom stripers...but usually when I work a rally, I charge almost DOUBLE my shop rate, and most others probably do the same (to cover traveling costs, etc...) Call your local hot-rod shop, and ask them who they recommend. Most rod shops (& bike shops too...especially H-D shops) have a local pinstriper that they use, and would be happy to give you their number. Plus...your back East....there's alot of great stripers back there...this should be an easy job for them. Good luck, and show us a pic of what you have done!!
  20. WOW...glad everything and everyone is OK. It's strange the way these situations magnetically pull folks together with the same interests & mindsets. Your helpers were also glad to see you folks safely returning to your trip...how could they possibly accept your money??!! What kinda trailer are you pulling?? Have fun & be careful on your trip. GodSpeed!
  21. ahhhhh...not so fast... I had no headsets when I got my '83 Venture, and told a friend who gave me a set offa his GoldWing.....DIDN'T WORK!....5 pins, wrong configuration. So if your Venture has the intercom system on it, Chris, then I'd look on e-bay for the correct matching headsets heck...I may have some
  22. This is just sad no matter how you slice it. Accidents DO happen to all of us, but failure to pay attention is NOT an accident...that is blatant NEGLIGENCE!!! It doesn't matter if it's an officer in the line of duty or not. HE made the turn into oncoming traffic, and failed to use proper caution..........this was clearly the cop's fault. How anybody, the DA or his department cheif...whoever, can defend this act is a crime in itself!!! I hope someone prints up a followup...I'd like to see the family come out on top of this.
  23. awwwwwwww....the heck with chrome... put some gas in the tank, go burn it off, repeat !!!
  24. Not really. I've been doing this stuff for over 25 years now, and the concensus is basically... if it's a one of a kind cartoon, and not reproduced over and over, then there's not a problem. If you want a Goofy on your side cover, then it's cool...but don't ask for a multi run of a Mickey t-shirt... Things like this go in funny streaks too... the Tazmanian Devil was a big one a few years back, and so waz Betty Boop...(did lots of both...just not all at the same time or place) I wonder what'll be next(???)
  25. Hey now...the link-up isn't working ...maybe it's just me!! have fun out there, and be safe...GodSpeed!
