  1. Good buddy of mine bought the Liberty last year. It's a cool trailer but after 2 days the lock broke. The chromish trim went sailing off after 50 miles but worst of all, the wheel bearing siezed or something and the wheel literally fell off after 150 miles in the middle of the desert! He left it there and went back to pick it up in with his truck. Also, the cooler mount was all willy nilly and tilting all over the place. We welded it on since there was no way U bolts were going to hold it on (on the round tounge). Good looking trailer but not for that kind of dough. Fit and finish isn't there. I hope you have a better experience.
  2. How many of the 5 million+ drivers participated in that survey? References? What is this? Facebook? Wikipedia? Good grief. Interesting noticing how many maps of "where we've ridden" signatures don't include CA. Try living there! Talk to the locals! Get your info from the source and stop with the YouTube Epinions. Unbelievable. Should I post 20 clips from YourTube of safe lane splitting? It's a different driving culture. Of course you're not going to do it, it's illegal almost everywhere.
  3. I thought it was a well written article. I feel the only doubters are the ones who don't live there (and I don't mean the "well I lived there for a year or two." The real locals whom might ride every day). If your daily commute consisted of sitting in that kind of traffic every day, I would be willing to gamble most would eventually start splitting lanes. Perhaps not at 30mph. Plus, crawling, idling traffic produces tons of pollution. I don't live there but visit often and every time I'm there I do it (albeit very gingerly and a lot slower than the locals). My wife surely doesn't dig it but gives in pretty quick once she starts broiling to death. It's a different driving culture, not necessarily bad or worse, just different.
  4. Chris, what does that mean," I can come home?"
  5. Hi everyone! Just got to Germany where I will be for the next 3 years. I shipped our VR and trailer over and know we're ok here but does anyone know the rules in (and around) the rest of the EU? Apparently, Spain is a bust. Googling just delivers a ton of vague info. We plan on going everywhere (except the hellish part of the Middle East and probably no Africa). Thanks! Great forum as always!
  6. An adjustable valve would be awesome. Let me know when you get your design done. I'm down for a pair!
  7. I just got done doing this same job. I used the K&S seals off ebay and reused the dust covers. Disassembly/reassembly was easy (with the forks removed. About an hour or so). Fit fine.
  8. Hey gang, finally reassembled the front end with the AD's back on and lo and behold, night and day. Took a test ride around the horrid roads of Tacoma and wow, it rides just like a bike from the 80's! 10wt oil, no air, AD's disconnected. Still, huge difference from before. Thanks Gary. One more question, how exactly do the air collars go back on? I thought they went over the circlips but I couldn't get them over those and of course, they leak like crazy now. Not that I'll ever use the CLASS (for the front). They sit just above the circlips. The manual just said to put them back on. How? Still be interested in a truly modern upgrade for this otherwise awesome motorcycle. I've ridden almost all of them and the Venture front suspension is, IMO, by far the worst. Especially considering how heavy it is. Should be cadilac like. I rode my friend's new Victory Crosstour (I know, not a fair comparison) last Aug and man, the front end was butter smooth! That was really all that I liked about it but I couldn't help but ponder how some nice forks up front would make the Venture totally awesome! Thanks again to all that chimed in. What a great forum!
  9. No Bob. Design your plates. I hate the idea of having to put them back on but if they work, I'm going to design a tube or something much smaller for the oil to pass through so I'll be getting rid of these new ones anyway Thanks Bob. Very kind of you but I'm no Indian giver. Thanks!
  10. I too would like to know where this is! Looks totally badass. Put a single HID off ebay in my 86' back in 2008. Got the pair plus ballasts for $55. Incredible diff! Need Hi beam? Turn knob. However, I like the look of this much more and a flickable high beam would be neat.
  11. IMO, this is one of this bike's biggest setbacks. Even without pulling the trailer, (4-5 mpg hit) at 100 miles I'd better be thinking about gas. I've run it out several times and never gotten more than 170 or so. Last time, we ran out of gas at 165 and luckily we only had to push the bike and trailer about 1/2 mile. Pretty long way for a 1400lb rig. An 8 gallon tank on this bike would be awesome! I have yet to do the carb mod, however.
  12. Thanks Gary. I'm looking forward to trying this out. Sure hope it works. On another note, has anyone actually gone frankestein and put a modern front end on? Seems like there's quite a few bikes that have 41mm forks and a ton that share the same steering stem bearing size. Oogling over this newer (pre 1800 or whatever it is) vMax (early 2000's?), I got real excited thinking about just strapping the entire front end on. I am aware that they're (97' on or so) 43mm.
  13. Trying to find a good used one is almost impossible. Get the EBC MD2049 (rotor) and the EBC HH pads. More braking power than you'll know what to do with. However, be prepared for one hell of a prostate check.
  14. Get well soon Larry! Glad you're ok.
  15. Hey Peder, awesome mileage! We should hook up one of these days as we're neighbors! I'm a pretty conservative rider and have never cracked 44 or so. Usually around 40. Sounds like your VR is dialed in if you're hitting almost 50!
  16. Hi guys, I disassmbled the forks today. They are perfectly fine, all parts there. I removed the block off plates and discovered all the oil pooled on the top hole. Furthermore, I've been studying the pdf Gary posted with the detailed blowups of the AD system. According to the diagram oil should be flowing through the units until braking. I know everybody says that the block offs are the same as the AD's unplugged but the diagram clearly shows the opposite. Seems there should be a channel carved into the block offs for the oil to flow. Or maybe I could drill a passage? I gave my AD's away. ANybody got a set for an 86' they want to sell?
  17. Condor's MegaBrace is awesome. Big diff.
  18. Thanks again guys. I have tried fork oil as well: there is no change. As I said, I'm very confused because before I took it apart the forks were fine. I haven't dropped anything in the tubes nor disassembled anything other than removing the cap to put the new springs in and remove the AD's. I'm using brake fluid because it's cheap. Most of the last two bottles of $10 fork oil ended up on the floor and me. So, if I can get some functional forks I look forward to dialing it in with some kind of nice oil. I'm going to rip the forks apart today. I'll take pictures of anything weird. Is the fender the only thing different on the vMax forks? Analyzing a vmax yesterday they look badass and simple.
  19. HI guys, thanks so much for all the responses. I have not dissassembled the fork. I haven't changed anything other than the springs and ditched the AD's (I gave them away so I can't try putting them back on). I don't know what's happening but when I put oil in them, they are very difficult to compress. I drained and tried brake fluid. Every bit as difficult to compress. It's as if the oil is being smushed through some tiny hole internally somewhere on compression. Will Vmax forks fit? I was looking at one today and thinking of just putting vmax forks on? I wish I knew why this was such an issue. I haven't ridden (nor will I) the bike since my big trip (the first w/the new springs). Sucks, I don't know what to do other than replace everything (which is the next move). I know everybody says the block offs are the same as the AD's but when the AD's were installed in the past, the front end would compress like a regular bike with the ignition off. Something is wrong here. Thanks everyone!
  20. 2nd Lonestar. Harbor Freight bearing removal tool works great. Did all my bearing a couple years ago.
  21. Well I'm very confused. The only thing I've done in this whole operation is remove the old springs and oil and replace with the new and remove the AD's, replaced with the block offs. I remember hypermileing in the past (pre front end disassembly) and being impressed how much the front end would dive with the ignition off. I've studied these drawings and I just can't understand where are the fluid is going. You can tell by the sound it's getting jammed through some tiny orifice upon compression. Guess a full disassembly is in order.
  22. Yeah Gary, that's exactly what I'm saying. The top caps are off. Springs are out. I fully collapsed the forks and measured 5" from the top. Pumped a couple times. Here's a link to the other video without the oil. http://www.motopalz.org/86venturefork.mp4 THanks again!! Just Remembered! Could it be that there were more internals I should've yanked before installing the Progressives? That's why I didn't need the PVC? Thanks!
  23. Hi guys, Here's a working video of what I'm talking about with the forks. This is with no springs, caps off. http://www.motopalz.org/86forks_venture.mp4 Thanks!
  24. Hi guys, thanks for all the replies and great info. So, in the video that didn't work, I was demonstrating the easy sliding action of each fork tube sans oil. Satisfied that all was good, I filled with power steering fluid to the 5" below mark and pumped each tube. Now, they are just like before. Compressable, but with all your might. As if the fluid is jammed and is squishing through some blocked oriffice. Still studying the design. Is it supposed to be that stiff? What if I used the hydraulic braking effect, a smaller spring and just cranked the air ride? Thanks everyone!
