  1. Bob: They are a separate part. They are for the 89 VR that I bought. I took the bike apart, to paint the plastic body panels and found the parts are missing. The radio didn't have a very good connection and the display on the face of the radio didn't work when I bought the bike. I was going to replace the radio but found out the plugs were not in securely and when I put the connectors together, the radio now works perfectly. The metal plates hold the plug in the right plane to match the mounted plug on the bottom of the radio. The plugs need to be mounted securely in place to match the plug in the bottom of the radio and cassette deck. Jim
  2. I need to order the small plates and screws that hold the power plugs in place for the AM-FM radio for my 89 VR. They are screwed into the bottom of the tray where the radio goes on the left side. I tried looking in the parts drawing on Bike Bandit but couldn't find them. Can someone provide me with the part numbers for the two mounting plates and the screws? And are the parts still available from a Yama dealer? The photo is from an '83 but I need the part numbers for a '89 Venture Royale. Thanks for any help. Jim
  3. In the town that I live in (in New York State) the issuing entity puts the last four digits of your drivers license on the mirror tag and that person is the only one allowed to use the tag. The tag can be used in any vehicle that the person is in. The fines are very steep in this town for using a tag that doesn't belong to you. $500 for a first offense and goes up with subsequent tickets. We have a full time meter maid that has the authority to check your identity. My wife has a HC tag and I never use it unless she is in the car with me.
  4. Thanks for the help. I am going to take it apart this weekend and check the wires. I had to work today and it was raining and decided not to tear it apart. Will look at it this weekend, as I am out of town all week. Thanks again. Jim
  5. I ha d Earl work on my 89 VR over the winter and one of the things I had him change was the switch and clutch lever because the cruise would cut off when I went over a bump in the road. Well, to make a long story short, I went for a ride today and the cruise doesn't work. When I turn the switch on, both the power light and the resume light come on and stay on. I cannot set the cruise. Also, the bike would not start with the bike in gear and the clutch handle in. I had to put the bike in Neutral to start it. I took the switch apart on the clutch handle and cleaned it and lubed it with dielectric grease and it now starts with the bike in gear and clutch in, but the resume light and power light are still on and the cruise does not work. The cruise worked, before I had the clutch handle changed, but would go off when the clutch handle was wiggled. So, I am not sure what to look for. I assume that I have a bad connection somewhere and will have to take the fairing off to look at the wiring. Is there a difference in the switches on the clutch handle, between years, as I had Earl change the switch that I bought off fleabay and now wonder if there is a difference in the switches. Has anyone had this problem before? Any suggestiions would be appreciated. Jim
  6. If anyone is in the Western NY area, Bongobobny and I and our wives are going out to dinner at the Hearth Restaurant on April 16th (Saturday). If you would like to attend, go to the calendar and sign up. Dinner is at 6:00 PM. The restaurant is located in Chaffee, NY on Rt 16 opposite Pioneer Motorsports (one of our sponsors who will be at Freebird's MD) BTW...do you have your order for parts and safety chrome, sent to Chad yet, so he can bring them to the MD?
  7. I put a 1 X 6 board under my bike. I just drive up on the board and stop, then it is very easy to put on the center stand. The board is screwed to the wooden floor so it will not move. Also, air up the rear shock, very important. Jim
  8. I have had four Buicks in the last 10 years and currently own two (Regal and LeSabre). Both have the 3800 engine and I wouldn't drive anything else. (Well, maybe a Cadillac that I have my eye on!). The Regal had the intake gasket replaced when I bought it (by the dealer) and that is the only thing that has been done with either car. This is a common problem with the 3800 engine and should be investigated by you before you purchase the car. Other than that gasket, never had a mechanical problem with either car other than regular maintenance items ie: oil change, tires, etc. The Regal is a '96 and is beginning to show rust this winter due to salt on the roads, but the body has held up well until this winter. I am going to sell the Regal and probably buy that Caddy this year. I have never checked the mileage on the Regal as we only drive it around town and don't care what it gets, but we get about 32 MPG in the LeSabre on the highway and 22 MPG around town. I usually drive the speed limit and am not a leadfoot, so the mileage is probably typical.
  9. Hey Bongobob, by US do you mean me and you? I can get the time off work without a problem. Oh, you were talking about Becky? Do they have beer there????? Do they have ice wine??? That is great news Tom! Bring back lots of photos to show at the WNY Rally. Jim
  10. Could it have been a broken grooved pin?
  11. 15.3 secs. Does this mean I am not qualified to operate a two wheeled vehicle and need more training???? It took me about 10 tries to get to 15 sec. At this rate I may be qualified to ride a two wheeler when I am 85 or 90 years old! By then i will be too old to fly a plane!! Jim
  12. Bob: I feel the same way you do, I have never talked to anyone about my service over there in 1967 and 1968. And I probably never will. It's better to keep that buried in the back of your mind. Most people cannot even begin to understand the horrors of war. It's one of those "you have to have been there to understand" things. Jim
  13. In that case I will be there at 4 PM!!!!! Becky and I should be able to finish that by dinner time!!!!
  14. Oh Oh, Someone needs to give Bongobob something to do for the next two weeks before he gets out of control!!!!!!
  15. Bob: I was going to come down there early on Saturday, so we could tip a few, but now I am concerned that if you get drunk , you will stagger around in a circle because one eye is stronger and brighter than the other one. I guess we will have to sit down and drink! I still have two weeks to go before I can go back to work, so maybe I should come down there for a week or so and keep you out of trouble. I am glad that everything went well for you. BTW, Sheila was bored, so she went shopping about the same time you and Becky did. Strange, isn't it. It must be ESP. She said she was tired of being cooped up after the snowstorm. It has snowed every single day since Jan 1st and we are really tired of it. See you Saturday, Bob! Jim
  16. Where i live in the NE, it's just another storm. Ho hum. We have had 60" so far this month and that is about half what we get for the whole winter, so I think it's going to be a long winter here in NY. Why do people go out in this kind of weather and not be prepared? Doesn't anyone ever listen to the TV or radio anymore?? Duh. They knew about this storm for a week ahead of time. Jim
  17. Hey Capt: We are a little north of you (about 1300 miles) and you would not like the weather up here. We do this every other year for our friends and relatives. My wife likes to cook these large meals and entertain. The ironic thing about this dinner is, we eat out three or more times a week and my wife only does this about half a dozen times a year. She starts planning the Christmas dinner in August, when she assembles the dinner menu and develops the recipes. I am the guinea pig in Oct and Nov as she tries the recipes out on me. The food always turns out terrific! Jim
  18. I got to sleep in for my Christmas present on Christmas Day. My wife and I entertained 24 people for a complete 6 course meal on Christmas Eve and we are both exhausted, we were cooking for three days. My wife makes everything from scratch, from the clam dip to the salmon mousse, clam fondue, lobster bisque, beef in rosemary cream sauce, honey/lemon chicken, ham, and bacon wrapped scallops Plus all the side dishes and desserts. We do not exchange gifts because if we want something, we just buy it. We help a couple of local families with gifts and food for Christmas. Hope everyone has a great Holiday and a happy new year. Jim
  19. Big Tom: Here are our trees. We have two outside that my wife made out of wire tomato cages. Next year save your tomato cages and let Taters make trees for the kids. The guard dog is there to protect the cookies and milk on Christmas Eve. Jim
  20. Here is my home, Bob. And for those of you who live down south, the snow is real. It is what is left of the 24" that we got last week. Jim
  21. I have an Acer 10" Netbook and it fits great in the trunk. Lots of room and it was cheap to purchase, about $220. It has an 8 hour battery and can connect anywhere I get a wi-fi signal. I use a soft sided case and have had no problems with it. Plus if it breaks or is stolen, I'm not out a lot of money. I also have an iPad but won't take in the bike because of cost. I can do everything with my 10" Netbook that I can do at home with my full size computers (I have four laptops at home). My 10" Netbook goes with me everywhere, everyday and I have had it since they first came out. The only problem I have with the 10" Netbook is that I have a hard time typing on it because the keys are smaller and closer together and I have a tendency to hit two keys at the same time while I am typing.
  22. I vote for prime rib, too. My wife is also serving at Xmas dinner: Prime rib Ham Crab stuffed pea pods Clam fondue Beef medallions in rosemary cream sauce Honey/lemon glazed chicken Lobster bisque soup Shrimp & lettuce salad Shrimp cocktail Scallops wrapped in bacon vegetable lasagna (for vegans) White and green asparagus w/mushroom and wine sauce Honey glazed brussel sprouts 2 kinds of potatoes And all made from scratch. She doesn't buy anything pre-made for her dinner. There is more, but she hasn't finished her menu yet. And that doesn't include all the desserts. And, of course, I do my part by going to the liquor store and buy the wine! She does this once a year for all our relatives. Jim
  23. Bob: Are you going to be able to walk on that toe on Dec 4th? Of course, if your wallet is a little lighter at the end of the day, it will take some pressure off your foot!!!!!! Jim
  24. Thanks, Dano, and yes, I took it up to 100 MPH yesterday and it still was eager to run more. But, that's fast enough for me. I am amazed at the difference in performance in the higher RPM ranges. This thing really wants to run now. And it feels so much smoother at the higher speed. Jim
  25. To all of you who took the time to help we with this TCI swap, I thank you because I think the swap has solved the problem. WOO HOO!!!! Bottom line is it made a big difference. I put the TCI on top of the airbox and just left it there. The bike started up and ran fine, so I let it get good and warm and when the gauge got near the red line the fan kicked on and the gauge started to go down after a minute or so. The fan then shut off and the temp started to creep up after a few minutes and the fan came on and then cycled off again. This is the first time I have been able to let the bike idle this long without it boiling over. I let it idle for almost a half hour with the fan cycling on and off. The temperature gauge never did go up in the red. It would come very close but when the fan came on it would drop down from the red/green line and then the fan would shut off. So, I think the TCI swap is a success just for the idling. But, there is more! Took it out for a ride and discovered that the new TCI was just like adding two more cylinders to the bike! Much more power and the bike ran much smoother. It ran really well when the RPMs were over 3000-3500. The power increase was remarkable. And the acceleration from 55 to 80 mph in top gear was awesome. I actually had to hang on the handgrips. The engine felt like it was running very smooth at 3500 RPM, much more so than with the old TCI. The temp in city riding would creep up and the fan would come on while sitting at a light. Once moving again the fan would go off. Before the TCI swap, I would have to have the fan running all the time I was in city traffic. (I have a manual override switch installed) There is one caveat though and that is the outside ambient temperature. I have ridden the bike twice and both times the temp was in the low 60's, so this may not be a fair test. Although the overheating problem has been evident at any ambient temp. I ran the bike on the local x-ways at sustained speeds of 70 to 75 MPH for at least 10 miles and the temp gauge never got over 3/4 of the way thru the green. When I transitioned onto the surface roads, the temp would creep up on the gauge but at no time would it go in the red. I feel that this new TCI has solved the problem. I put about 125 miles on the bike on each trip and it combined city travel as well as highway. I also think the temperature gauge is reading high. My 89 temp gauge only goes halfway up before the fan kicks on and then falls back to the 1/4 mark. The gauge on the 83 has always been running up near the red line. So, to sum it up, I think the TCI change has made a big difference, but the proof will be on those 90 degree days. So, now I think I may keep the bike and see what will happen next spring when the temps start to go up. We are now into the late fall weather here in western NY and the temps are now generally in the 40's and 50's during the day. I am going to take the bike to Earl (Skydoc) in the Spring and have him do a tune up and check the timing, etc.. I feel much more comfortable about selling the bike now and not parting it out. A big thank you to Bongobob and Skydoc and Dingy. They were all instrumental in solving this problem. Thanks for all the help and support. There are great people on this site!! Jim
