I'll keep using it until everyone figures it out. If not we'll just keep using it 'n keep 'm in the dark, and it'll be our secret.......

It pro'bly could be made to fit, but the passenger seat is smaller on the mark 1's than on the mark 2's. I haven't tried it but you may have to mod the handrails to make room. And then the handrails might not fit the contour of the saddle bags..... The 1stGen m-1's are a pretty tight fit in there.

I can see miles of smiles in that one. Congrats!!

ya gotta get out and ride more Dan......

Think about it this way Don. The air/fuel ratio will stay the same no matter what liquid flows thru the carbs at a given air velicity.. The difference between non-ethanol fuel and ethanol fuel is virtually nothing, as far as the ratio is concerned. The difference lies in how many BTU's are developed between the fuels. Less BTU's less power...less MPG. The mix of ethanol in the state of CA is 5.7% by volume. Sure it's going to reduce power output, but not by a bunch. And if it were 'crappy' gas every 1stGen in the state would be having the same problem. I don't see that. Common sense tells me that the diagnosis given by the mechanic ' Larry's solution was that there was a lean running fault because of the rotten gas we get here', and his fix is to punch out the jets, might have corrected a mechanical problem.... liked plugged up idle jets, rather than to correct a lean burn situation because of 5.7% ethanol in our fuel. Sorry for the long response.... it's catching....

After re-reading your post I'm going to retract the 'spot on' statement. I'm still going to ask the question. Why does Ethanol cause a lean air/fuel mix? Your response covered a lot of areas, some I agree with, and others I don't, but that's not important. The reason for my first post, and one that you never really addressed was; How does Ethanol cause a lean fuel/air mix. I'm always willing to learn something. Can you explain?
-
What you've said is spot on. And this relates to ethanol fuel.....how??
-
I think the thing your missing here is that the mechanic blamed the CA ethanol fuel for the cause of the high RPM condition, and that by richening the mixture the problem disappeared. I think it was something else that caused the condition, and by messing with the carbs it was corrected. CA fuel will not cause an engine to run lean. Maybe get less gas milage because it's less volatile, but lean.... nope..... MOF when I left for Ft Collins the first tank was CARB fuel and it only got a couple of miles less per gallon than afterwards when I started filling up with non-ethanol fuel, and the bike ran great the whole trip.

I agree with you Mike. I burn that Ca fuel and have no problems what so ever. While resurecting 83#2 I found that the idle had to be backed off a ton after syncing the carbs. My guess would be that punching out the jets didn't do a thing other than clean them out and cause the motor to run richer and maybe reduce the mpg.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery Orrin.....

My original '83 had foam insulation strips stuck to the top of the rack rails. Worked pretty well too.....

George. The main gathering place will be at Ludy's in Woodland. Lone Eagle, Rich-99, and Bubbajbi are in the Concord/Livermore area, but that may not be convenient for you depending on your location in SF. I'd think maybe hooking up at Dennys in Cordelia, but you'll need to check with them on that. Glad your thinking about making it. Hope your jaw is well enough to gnaw on a rib....

We'll tickle a rib for ya Bob.....

On Sunday, Oct 21st, Lone Eagle and myself (Condor) are taking a ride to Woodland Ca. for BBQ RIBS at Ludy's, then on to Reiff's Gas Station to take a look at an awesome antique collection of 1930's, 40's and 50's Gas Station memoribilia. If we have the time we'll also take in the AG History Center. Anyone in the San Francisco/Sacramento/Nor-Cal area that would like to join us is more than welcome. We'll meet for lunch at noon. It's going to be a great time. And bring your cameras. http://www.reiffsgasstation.com/images/web-tex1_rd75.png This is the perfect location for your next Car Club gathering! Book the patio for your next luncheon or just stop in for a tour. http://www.reiffsgasstation.com/images/web-usethismap_.jpg

Thanks Cecil, and to the rest of you too..... Just pedalin' as fast as I can... -
Near as I can figure, after doing some research on the net, is that it was built by the Cushman Motor Works for the Bean Co. for their orchard sprayer. These things ran washing machines, well pumps, lumber mills. Just about everything before electricity came along. They're called hit'n'miss engines. The spark came off a magneto and only fired when the rpm dropped below a certain point. So it only fires when needed. Hense the hit'n'miss lable. Put a load on one of these things and it just keeps firing on every stroke and the torque is incredible....
-
Went to a marine swap last Saturday and came home with a 'hit'n'miss'. It doesn't look like much, and it never may. I just couldn't help myself. I love to hear these old things run, and I always make it a point to spend some time taking in the display of chuffers at the State Fair. Besides I need a break from scoots for a while.....

MAC Muffler group buy list.

Just got off the phone yesterday afternoon with MAC. I think they got their signals crossed somewhere along the line. When I first talked to Waylon, the 'new' customer service go-to guy, I thought he said that 6 pair were ready to ship, and I told him to wait for the other 4 before sending. Yesterday he tells me that the 6 are just being packed up for shipment, and they're still waiting for the last 4 to come back from the plater's. I know this has been dragging on forever, and after this I think I'm going to make it the last batch. I might also add that if anyone has changed their mind I'll be happy to refund their money....... It's too late to refund thru Paypal and so I'll eat the charges. -
We couldn't afford the balcony because we took the kids, but I did find a nook of the ship no one came to very often and would sit for hours watching the cost line go by. Saw a bunch...

Centre Stand and MAC exhaust
Condor replied to rez's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
This is the first I've heard of something like this. My thought is, is the rubber center stand buffer pad still mounted on the left muffler? If not it might allow the stand to bounce because it doesn't have anything to rest against. BTW, the center stands are goofy looking, and not symetrical. Your's is probably fine...
