  1. Not really a tech question per se, hope folks will bear with me for a bit. I am being tempted by a rather nice looking low mileage reasonably priced '82 XJ1100 for sale some distance from here. She is calling me even though I've told her I don't need her, don't have room for her, that I am happy with my XVZ12 and would rather hang on to my cash. Regardless, she keeps calling to me. http://www12.asphost4free.com/easthope/xj1100.jpg I have been on the XJ forum site quite a lot yesterday and every one there says 'buy it, you'll like it!' (Even the wife has said 'oh ok that sounds like fun' ) The XJ'ers tell me that XJ1100's are CRAZY fast and powerfull and I'll be in heaven. Hopefully they mean that figuratively and not literally as in I'll kill my self but regardless, I have to wonder. Most of these folks are riding xj400's to xj750's, so I can see that the xj1100 would seem a world apart. (PC disclaimer: Not to disparage any 2 wheeled activities of course and of I fully acknowledge that small displacement bikes are pure fun, devilment and equally worthy, your mileage may vary, yada yada yada) My queston to you guys is, how does an xj1100 compare power and speed wise to the first gen Venture ? Will it bring me closer to nirvanah, or will I just miss the trunk space? BTW, don't get me wrong, I am not proposing to part with my Venture, but the cold truth is I can only afford insurance on one bike at a time. So sad to say I can never have two to choose from any time I want. Best I could hope for is one on cold standby. My xj650, which is my current cold standy, always did seem a bit tame, right from the start, so I have never relished the thought of going back to that (see above disclaimer). The optimum I guess would be a second Venture but so far prices are too steep and apparently they sell close to asking so there isn't much room to haggle. So, has any one here any first hand xj1100 experience to relate? Thanks, Brian H. Uxnridge Ont
  2. Where they went through the grommet, I put an inch or so long piece of heat shrink tube (Radio Shack or equiv) around each of the wires to BULK them up a bit. I then used some of the silicone gasket making stuff to seal them to the grommet. (I might even have put a bit of the silicone gasket stuff on the wires and then put the heat shrink over top of that.) Before I pulled the wires into the grommet holes, I put a liberal amount of the gasket stuff on the wire where the grommet would be. I coated it all the way around. THEN I pulled the wire into the hole so that it would take the gasket stuff in with it. Worked out good for me. Hope this helps. Brian H. Uxbridge Ont
  3. Sorry, don't have one of those in my spare parts bin but we did see your Venture parked out side in Chatsworth the other day on our way by going to Sauble Beach and then again on the way home. Looked great to me. Great to see another ol Venture ! Cheers, Brian H. Uxbridge Ont
  4. ..........please take pix and post them where we can see. Thanks, Brian H.
  5. Hi, I have two sets of forks for my 84 xvz12, both sets have progressive springs in them. One pair came with the bike at 20,000 miles and the other I bought on ebay because I couldn't get any life out of my fork seals on the originals. I surmised that rough spots on the forks were tearing up the seals even though I had done my best to smooth them out with judicious use of a fine stone and lots of oil. I wish I had tried replacing the bushings too but never did that. All in all I'd say that the ebay set are in better shape and do have new bushings, but the original set are not too bad except for the fork seal issue. With the original set the bike rides true and steady. With the replacement set, I get a wobble if I take my hands off the bars. No wobble is apparent till I take my hands off the bars and the bike rides well so long as there are hands on. I don't understand how substituting forks can cause this sort of thing. I don't have any fancy instrumentation to check but the troublesome forks don't look bent or deformed in any way and as I say they are in marginally better shape than the original pair of forks. Any one have any suggestions or insights into how to trouble shoot this ? Thanks, Brian H.
  6. I bought one of RMSTATOR's "hi output" units last May when my OEM original failed. It arrived promptly and as promised but was not quite the drop in replacement advertised. I had to make some changes to mounting bolts and cable clamps to get it to fit in. Nothing too complex but a nuisance. The folks at RMSTATOR tried to be helpful but basically I was on my own. My major concern was that I'd void the warranty, they all but said 'don't worry, do what you have to do'. Once installed, this stator lasted in service for one month, almost to the day. I had a feeling that the RMSTATOR folks were reselling Electrosport units, so I called Electrosport and asked them. I was right. Electrosport honoured the warranty and replaced the failed stator, but it took a month round trip to California and back. Meanwhile I installed a used OEM stator I had bought on ebay for $15 or so, otherwise my bike would have been out of action for that month while I waited. The used OEM stator is still in service and the RMSTATOR/Electrosport unit is on the shelf in its box untouched. I'll sell it to anyone interested for say $100 Cdn or what ever the current going rate is but I really don't advise it. I'd go OEM even a used OEM one if I had to do this all over again. Hope this tale is of interest and some use to some of you. Cheers, Brian H.
  7. Well I persisted. Tried several tactics but heat and lots of it seemed to be the answer. I got out the flame and played the flame on the inner hub for what seemed like an eternity. Suddenly, just as predicted, CRACK, and it was on the floor! Shot off about a foot just as predicted by the sages here. The photo below shows how it fell. http://home.powergate.ca/~bjh/pix/P0002610-800.jpg I have since accessed the starter clutch and found the problem. The copper coloured disc is cracked just like the one pictured in the tech page write up here in the first gen tech library. I am still reassembling, hopefully I'll have it all back together ASAP. Thanks for the help and moral support. Brian H. Uxbridge Ont

  9. Attempting to change my starter clutch however, the flywheel won't budge. OK so, I took the centre flywheel bolt out and inserted the puller's pointy end into the cavity below the washers, so I surmise (hope) I have it against the end of the main shaft. I have the puller tightened up pretty good. I am applying heat with a 1200 watt electric paint stripping heat gun, whacking the f/w with a mallet but it isn't shifting. To tighten the puller, I am levering with a steel bar about 24 inches long in one hand and a piece of iron pipe extending the wrench handle out to about 15 inches in the other. I have pushed this combo till its just about as tight as I can get it, so the puller is pretty tight. I have been playing the heat into the centre of the f/w trying to be even with it around the f/w. Any thing else I need to know? Is 1200 Watts enough heat, or should I break out the flame? Thanks, Brian H.
  10. Thanks for the FAST info! Just what I needed to know. Have asked a few resellers round here about the p/n as I don't see any on Eb today. Happy 4th to all south of the boarder. Brian H.
  11. I hear that Yamaha retrofitted the early Ventures with a crankshaft 'paddle' device to improve oil circulation over the stator coil to dissipate heat from it. Does anyone have a part number for this 'paddle' ? I am going back in to change the starter clutch and I'd like to install one of these while I am at it, but can't find it listed in any of the parts diagrams at Yamaha.com. Thanks, Brian H. 13. Is there a frappr map, or similar, associated with this site? If so, how do I get to it? Thanks, Brian H
  14. Well I have been watching the warm / cold start clutch thing on my bike. It definitely is a bigger problem first thing in the morning. When I originally posted, temps were in the 20 C region in the mornings. Today it was 27 C in my garage when I started her at our usual 05:30. I am thinking that perhaps it is a bigger issue in the mornings because the starter motor is working harder / longer on those morning cold starts. My battery is brand new BTW. Later in the day, there is a chance that all I'll get is rattle when I push the start button but the next time, if it gets a good grip, the motor starts easier being warm, so I notice it less. Guess I am going to have to knuckle down and get the starter clutch changed 'cause I hate that rattle. Thanks for listening. Brian H.
  15. I have been living with mine being iffy for some time now, it has gradually got worse. Now I wonder if I'm going to get home every trip. There are a few rainy days in the forcast, perhaps I'll pay a local mechanic to do the job for me while its raining. Brian H.
  16. Hi, My '84's starter clutch is a real problem when the bike is cold, like first thing in the morning, but not so much when the bike is warm from a run or has been sitting in the sun at quitting time. Is this a common failure mode? (I have the part, just no time to install it) Thanks, Brian H. Uxbridge Ont
  17. Thanks for the forum suggestion, I'll pass that along. She is having difficulty with 4 way flash and horn not working on her (Canadian) '94. Turn signals apparently work OK and the rest of the bike runs good. The 4 ways have not worked for a while and I am not sure if the horn is a new problem or an old one. She is a bit timid about working on her own bike, but is a machinist by trade so I think its time she got in there. Took us a while just to find the secondary fuse panel. She's going to check fuses first, likely tonight I gather. Meanwhile, if any thing comes to mind among you Virago owners, we'd be glad to hear of it. Thanks, Brian H.
  18. Any one know of a good Virago 1100 forum on the net? A colleague at work is looking for some help with her '94, she's having electrical troubles. Google and I found a couple but they didn't look that busy. Where do the serious XV1100 owners hang out ? Thanks, Brian H. Uxbridge Ont
  19. Here is the answer from SeaFoam themselves: Since all physical things, including air and water, are chemical, I am a bit mystified by how the final statement can be true. Suffice it to say though, there is apparently no Acetone in there despite my perception of the smell. Hope this is of interest. Brian H. Uxbridge Ont.
  20. My previous stock of seafoam came from New York city a few years ago when I was down on business. It was bluish green colour. I notice that the seafoam I am buying here in the ouskirts of Toronto these days, is clear and colourless. Seems to me that it smells different too. The old stuff smelled vaguely of acetone or similar but the recent batch has a much milder smell. Any one know if the formulation has changed recently or if its formulated differently for Canada ? I have posed the question to Customerservice AT seafoam DOT com and will report their response. Cheers, Brian H.
  21. Found out by surprise when I went in for a can of S/F that its on sale almost half price for the month of June in Ontario CAnada. Time to stock up! Pass it on. Cheers, Brian H. Uxbridge Ont
  22. Here is a non tech poor man question. Anyone have any experience with a dog on board? I see there are carriers commercially available but MAN the prices! Must be all the lawyering thats needed to bring these to market! Background, a lab puppy recently joined our family and she seems willing, but I'd like her to be safe, well as safe as you can be on a m/c. Whats the best solution here? Thanks, Brian H.
  23. What's your evidence behind this statement, how do you know that the airflow is the same across both types of filters? All the same, I am very tempted given that the Yammy ones cost $50 or there abouts. I'd really like to change mine more often but OUCH! Watching with interest. Brian H. Uxbridge Ont.
  24. I am going to err on the side of caution here. Lets face it, lots of high priced engineering goes into modern rubber and I am not about to second guess them when my life is on the line! Call me a wuss if you feel you need to but its M/C tires on my m/c's and car tires on my cars end of debate. I will stand back and watch those more adventurous souls with the same mix of admiration, horror and disbelief that I use when watching people swim with sharks. Brian H. Uxbridge Ont
