Parts took 9 mos to get here - And I am satisfied
dragerman replied to Sunman's topic in Watering Hole
Yes, and thanks for hanging in there Sonny and for all your help, I’m glad Sports Super Center came through. With so many places going out of business all the delay was certainly cause for concern ... especially when the parts are already paid for. From the places I’ve checked the carb covers just weren’t available and from what I understand were on an international back order. Well they’re on the way and it won’t be long now! -

Turn Signal/Passing Lamp problem
dragerman replied to Bluesman's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I’m not sure how it works for the front but when I installed the run/break conversion kit into the rear turn lights I ran in a similar problem. I had a hard time to get the bulb socket with the rubber sleeve back into place. After applying a thin film of dielectric grease to both sides I was able to work it in... perhaps that might help -
Stebel Horn Inside Fairing ? GPS question.
dragerman replied to quasimoto's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Yup! It worked for me... here's another thread; http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=33869 The new horn has come in handy already! -
Yes, the Venture is certainly a bike to aspire to. I’m not sure if you know this but you’ve landed yourself right in the middle of a nest of motorcycle enthusiasts that one might argue has a fetish for these bikes! Having said that it’s all about the love of motorcycling, you’ll search long and hard to find a better bunch of folks and we welcome you. I commend you for stepping up to the plate with your inquiries and that is exactly the way to start. How did you find us and what made you decide this group? Your timing is pretty good as there is a motorcycle show going on this weekend at the International Center in Toronto that might peak your interest. It’s not a very big show but there are usually booths set up with info on Rider Training courses, accessories and perhaps a few bikes. Here’s the link; http://www.internationalcentre.com/events/international-spring-motorcycle-show-2009-04-04 When I started riding I bought a street legal dual sport bike that I could take off road. It was an easy bike to ride and a good way to learn. Not only did it provide me with transportation and a chance to learn safety on the streets but the off road riding helped develop the muscles and reflexes for riding. I’ve only ridden a moped once and that was just to try it out... I found the short wheelbase, small wheels and narrow steering quite awkward. All the best with whatever you decide!

I have no idea what the year or part number is for the horn button, almost any control cluster will do. Originally I was looking for one from a venture but then found this one. As I’ve mentioned I had to cut the button portion off of the cluster then shape and square it down with a sanding disc. After I made a new backing plate for the switch I used some Devcon (liquid metal) to close in the top. When the Devcon cured I smoothed it down with the sanding disc and attached it to the bike with some 3-M exterior two sided tape. I made sure it cleared the gas tank before I put it on. Find a shop that sells used bike parts and you should be able to find a cluster with a horn switch that will work.

Hey Cougar, those are the Yamaha Tri-Bar lights that they sell for the RSTD. They’re not available for the Venture because headlight doesn’t come with the required mounting bracket. To do the mod I took a bracket from a damaged Venture headlight and put the one inside the other but using this particular headlight didn’t come without its challenges. First of all after I removed the old lens the new light didn’t fit into the bracket. It took some shaping and fitting to get it in, properly centered and secured. The other major consideration was the fact that the Tri-Bar headlight from Yamaha has a nylon exterior housing... the problem with that is that there aren’t any products that will properly adhere the nylon to the metal bracket. Long story short, with some creative thinking, lots of patients, some Devcon, epoxy, silicon, and a headlight ring from a 68 mustang I was able to make it work! ... kinda reminds me of an old Johnny Cash song! I would suggest that anyone doing this mod should measure the bracket opening to make sure the new light will fit and to find one with either a glass or metal housing. The bulbs have been upgraded to the PIAA H-I-D 55w Super Plasma. I must have them angled right because they don't seem to bother the oncoming traffic.

Ok, ok… I’ll grant the Black Midnight ‘second’ place... After all Black Cherry is a Midnight with a Cherry on top! Put a Cherry on anything and it always seems to make it more gooder!
-
Black is not a color it’s the absence of light so therefore your bike doesn’t really exist!

Another option would be to run a fused pigtail out under the seat direct from the battery. I have one and use it to plug in my trickle charger and also have cable attachment for boosting. One could also hook up a compressor or any other 12 V attachments to it and use it as required. Just a thought.

Actually the picture of the water was taken this evening for ‘johnny-canuck’, on an earlier post I mentioned to him that I was taking a break to go watch the sunset.

You might want to check the wires where they come out from the passing lamp bracket up into the faring. If they pass by the steering block without being tied they could have been pinched by the stop blocks on the lower tree… don’t ask me how I know!

First of all I’ve got to say that I love this site and all the ideas, opinions and constructive criticism that flow through it. Some of the bantering that goes on is pretty funny too… like what color is the fastest, lol! ... Isn’t that silly, we all know that Black Cherry is the fastest and that 2nd Gen rules! So I’ve been wanting a new ‘Do you see me now’ horn because as you know stock horns just don’t make the cut. Stock horns are nice when you want to politely get someone’s attention without shouting but that’s about it. Having said that my goal was to find an alternate location for a horn, install a separate switch and keep the stock horn operational. I lucked out on a Bad Boy horn for $29. but couldn’t find a decent switch for a fair price so here’s what I did… I came across a left hand control cluster off an old Kawasaki, it’s almost identical to one on the venture. Long story short I cut the horn switch off the bottom of the cluster, made a separate switch out of it and installed it under my existing horn switch. Now I can use either horn (or both) and the switch is in reach of my thumb. Although it was a tight fit I made a little bracket and mounted the horn under the front faring to the left of the cassette player/amp (black box). Being under the faring the horn is still quite loud and its right up front where I want it. The horn is on a separate fused circuit through a relay wired directly to the battery. The other thing I did (with some help from our tech library) was a headlight mod. I now have the Tri Bar headlight with passing lamps to match. I’ve upgraded the headlight bulb to an ultra and the passing lamp bulbs to the PIA H-3. There is not much more I want to do to the bike besides ride it... although I do like the idea of swapping out the cassette player for some gauges... does it ever end!?! Here are some pictures including a before and after of the headlight...

I took some photo's of where I put my horn today and will post them under a new thread so have an eye for it. I'll also be showing pics of my headlight mod and horn switch. Sorry but I can't help you with the snow except to encourage you that it won't be long now! ... I'd post the pictures now but I was just heading down to the dock with a coffee to watch the sun set!!

Hi John, yes I've just installed a plain Bad Boy horn in the front fairing and am very pleased with how it sounds. I found Freebird's post very helpful; http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=500 I ran a seperate fused wire from the battery to a relay and installed a seperate horn switch, my stock horns are still opperational.

Wow, looks great! That’s an ambitious project... certainly a labor of love. As for the ‘brows’ I tend to like the dark solid color Ventures without... heck, looking at your photos I’d be wondering if I’d even put the tank emblems on? Either way it will look great... it’s a win, win situation! Nice work

I have an 06 and had similar problems with my radio as is being described here. What I did was got some contact cleaner from Radio Shack, split the fairing, pulled the radio connectors apart then sprayed each end with the contact cleaner and blew them dry with the air hose. Before reconnecting them I applied some dielectric grease to each end... not only did it solve the problem but I haven’t had a problem since. While I had the fairing apart I opened up and applied dielectric grease to all the other connectors as well. I also use it on the bulb sockets for the signal lights and battery terminals, good stuff! Dielectric grease is non hardening silicon and should not be confused with Vaseline. It might be worth a try.

Would I be correct in saying that one should use distilled water to mix with the anti freeze? -
Well said, my sentiments exactly. As we have a good Lord and a few members who have left us he will be in good hands. My condolences to the family.
