Anyone got any ideas on this 17MM tool for fork cap removal on the 1st gens? http://www.restockit.com/sunex-1-2-drive-hex-impact-socket-17mm-(sun26499).html?source=CJproduct Price seems reasonable, and I wouldn't have to create a frankenstein tool outa parts. I am a mechanical guy who would use thing quite often for other projects too, so it wouldn't be job specific to my 1st gen. Looks worth the purchase to me, unless you guys have other suggestions.   4. Funny you should post this right now. I was just thinking that I have the same thing coming my way soon. My 30' travel trailer roof (also no slides) isn't leaking yet, but it is a 1997 model and will need replacement at some point. I'm not that far down the road from you. Rusty

  6. I still use and enjoy my cassettes on both Ventures. Although I am considering installing a Victrola. Talk about retro cool.
  7. Been really busy lately. Did a lot of backing them out of the garage, starting them, letting them run, checking them out, and putting them back up again. Rode a couple of hours today with some "old guy" buddies. Temps ranged from the the 40s up to the 50s as the ride went on. I've got some off days coming up next week. Been in withdrawals:bang head: too long. Gotta get my fix !!!
  8. When I was Road Captain for our CMA chapter for a few years, I often led 65 +/- bikes on our rides every week. When we went anywhere on the interstate, I would ride a mile or two per hour slower than traffic. It was a whole lot easier to let folks pass our string of bikes than to try to drag the string in and out to pass cars. So, we just cruised the right lane and let folks pass us. I still ride that way, even when I'm alone. I always leave plenty early so I can ride my own pace and get where I'm going a little early. Just less stressfull to ride a bit more slowly.
  9. I've never seen a cover/instrument pod like those in the photos. Where did you find that? Was it made for another type of bike? I think it's cool. Rusty
  10. I like them both. The 1988 for its easier steering and a bit better throttle responsiveness (I'm avoiding saying it's quicker). And it does have a "Cool Factor" to me. The Millenium because it's really great on the highway and I've already got my trailer hitch on it and use it to haul stuff. Rode it 1140 interstate miles in under 21 hours one day. Yes, I felt a bit tired the next day, but not too bad at all. It's a great ride! I would like to see a suspension compressor on the Millenium.
  11. This one is rated at: 2-3.5 psi. 28 gallons/hour. 105 liters/hour. Small enough to fit where we need to put it to replace our stock pumps. However, it isn't a direct swap. Inlet and outlet are on opposite ends of pump. I would think that it should work as well as our $175.00 pumps. I'll probably mock up the connections on the pump and have it in the saddlebag and ready in case mine fails.

  13. Now that looks like a really functional place to put that door opened button. But what if you were out visiting, say Canada, and your hand slipped and hit that garage door button. Even as fast as these bikes are, I doubt you could make it home before some thief sees your door open and steals your steaks in your garage freezer. I'm just sayin'
  14. Hey Goose. Thanks for taking the time to prepare such a great information-filled response! I went back to the bike the next morning and turned on the key. The pump clicked once. Something I would have expected. I could not replicate the 6 second pulses of the pump every time the key was turned on like the night before. Anyway, I started the bike and lightly finger pinched the inlet line (because it is a softer line that the outlet line and is easier to feel the pulse) about an inch from the pump. I could feel its pulse. Seemed to be working fine. I mixed some Yamaha carb/valve stuff, some MM oil, and a little gas and put a hose directly into that and let the pump suck it into the carbs and run the engine for a couple of minutes on it. I'm letting that sit in the carbs for a few days right now. Then I'll drain the bowls again and run fresh fuel through them and go for a ride. I did pick up a Mr. Gasket #42S pump as a "just in case". Thanks again for your assistance. Rusty
  15. Got many items from Pinwall. Always had good service and prompt shipping from them. Just won a bid on a part a couple of days ago. Probably will arrive this week. I just noticed that some of their ebay listing are listed in Navarre, Ohio and some in Massilon, Ohio. Don't know if that complicates anything.
  16. Thanks Cowboy. Good point! Didn't think of a check valve being in there. I guess that maybe something buggered up in the pump when I was working on the bike's fuel system yesterday. The bike was running crappy to start with, that's why I was working on it. But I didn't notice the fuel pump running oddly until after I put everything back together. I'm going to go out and look things over again today. If my pump is bad, I'm gonna get one of the Mr. Gasket ones to replace it. I see where others on here have done that swap instead of buying a new Yamaha one. The Mr. Gasket 42S is $46 at Advance Auto Parts and that store's only a mile from me. The inlet and outlet are on opposite ends, so some piping work would be in order. There's enough brains on this forum that most anything can be figured out sooner or later. Rusty
  17. O.K. Here's a couple of questions and maybe a longshot thought: How many miles are on the engine? You think you may have some catalytic converter pluggage? I had a 1987 Ranger that was losing power and the temp was rising very quickly and falling slowly, then rising quickly again. It also blew the PCV out of the right valve cover. I deduced that the catalytic converter was plugged (@ 150k miles) and backpressuring that head. With very limited exhaust being able to escape that head, it would heat up, hence my temp would heat up quickly. Then the thermostat would open and slowly bring the temp down. As soon as the thermostat closed, the temp would quickly rise again. I rodded out and gutted the cat and then it ran great. Then the computer figured out that the cat was gone and it idled like crap. I cured that by getting rid of the truck. I now have a 2003 Z71 with the 5.3L engine @ 107k miles. It also warms up very quickly, but then stays in the normal range like it should. Hope you get it figured out.
  18. I've been searching for what's wrong with my Millenium. It's idling a little lumpity lump crappy. Idle slows down sometimes. It has only died out once while idling. Seems to run well down the road. Today, I did the following: Replaced the plugs (had 17k miles on them). #2 and #4 looked fine. #1 and #3 were a little darker, but not bad at all. Replaced the fuel filter (but the old filter still flowed fuel very well). Drained all carbs (very slight bit of water in #3 bowl). With the bowl drains open, I ran the pump to push new fuel through them and out the drain hose. Drained the tank and inspected fuel (looked fine). Checked the main and reserve petcock screens (both were clear). Tested the fuel pump (clicking along and shooting fuel, albeit, I don't know how well it should shoot fuel). This is what I find happening: Every time I turn on the key, the pump will run for about 6 seconds. I turn the ignition to "on", but don't try to start the engine. The pump runs for 6 seconds. I turn off the key for a second or so and turn it back to "on", the pump again runs for 6 seconds. It does this no matter how many times I cycle through this procedure, although never trying to start the bike. I have never before noticed the pump running every time I turn on the ignition. Usually, when the bike has been sitting for a few days, of course the pump will pump up several clicks when I turn on the ignition. But normally, if the bike has been ridden recently, the pump would only click a time or two and it was all it needed. I don't believe that I have a stuck float as I don't distinguish any gas in the oil. I haven't had the carbs off yet. Probably gonna go there next. Has 54k on the bike now. But I'm still wondering if the pump is working properly.
  19. Yup, I just retired (again), my wife and I are 52 and our children are 26, 24, 23, and 21. Our youngest is still in college, but the rest are out on their own. Now, we are currently nearly finished with our paperwork to adopt our next child, Simon. He has Albinism, was abandoned around a month old, and is considered special needs. He is 9 months old now. We would also like to adopt a healthy 7 year old boy who we call Jacob. He was abandoned last year. But we don't know if we can qualify for him yet. Since we are 52, we are only qualified to adopt special needs children from China. China won't let you adopt if you are over 50. But if you are willing to accept special needs children, you can be up to 55. So, all said and done, we are anxious to start over. This time without having to go to work everyday.   20. A lot of us could most likely benefit from that statement. And I would also try not to add anything to the bike that isn't functional. I see so many bikes loaded down with all sorts of chrome do-dads, that I just have to ask myself, "Why?" Chrome don't get you home.
  21. Well, I like Harleys just fine (actually, I really like some models quite a bit), but do usually prefer Yamahas. The problem I have with HD is all of the the Special Anniversary bikes. I think HD over-uses that way too much. My 2003 Sportster is a good enough bike. It is an anniversary bike, a 100th anniversary bike. Now that makes a little sense to me to have a 100th anniversary moniker. But, it still won't sell for anymore than a non anniversary 2002 or 2004 model. But HD seems to have an anniversary special every 5 years. To me, having an anniversary model that often is just dumb. That just takes the "special" right out of it. To some folks, I guess, that marketing must be effective enough to separate them from their money.
