Might have been a long video, but did a good job describing and showing the lift mechanism and parts. Thanks!

(Tried to add pix for clarification of what I have now). Don't laugh at my stick people like drafting. My trailer is 44 inches wide outside to outside of the trailer tires, so a piece of plywood would be wide enough to work for the ramp. Of course I would have to make the plywood longer than 8 feet for it to work.

You are assuming partly right. The frame would indeed be the connection points for the straps and bear the weight of the trailer as it is raised. But the straps would have to then be pulled tight against the sides of the box and come together really close to the top of the box to hook onto the cable hook. Keeping the straps close to the top (i.e. as short as possible) would allow pulling the trailer up as close to the ceiling as possible. As the trailer is lifted, I am assuming the straps would all pull inward against the sides of the box. I hope I didn't just confuse you more. My background is in electrical/electronics/mechanics. Unfortunately, not much rigging experience here. Appreciate your comments.

---Having been born in Brooklyn in 1955 and leaving there in 1990 for Florida I thought maybe a nice visit back home would be nice.--- I was born in Canton (in the upstate country) NY in 1958. My mom was from up there, but my dad was from SC. So, we moved back to SC in 1961. Went to NY City in 1987 and paid twenty six dollars to park in a street corner vacant lot for only three hours. The city was horribly noisy and trashy. People were blowing their horns constantly in traffic jams. I wondered where they thought they were going to go as traffic was at a standstill. I couldn't see the mentality in it. Anyway, went back in 1998 (on a tour bus with my daughter's 8th grade class) and was very surprised. The city was a whole lot cleaner, seemed friendlier, and was much quieter. I noticed signs that said you would receive $300 fines for horn blowing. I don't know if I'll return there again. I'll just stay on I-81 and head back home to Canton where the folks are friendly (at least to relatives) and the air is cleaner. AND THE PARKING IS FREE!!!

Thought about that too. I was gonna use four straps attached to the four corners of the cargo area and hook the strap ends to a single lifting point (winch cable) above and lift the trailer up evenly that way. I was afraid that as it was being lifted, the straps would push on the sides of the (now 20 year old) abs plastic body of the carrier and possibly stress it. I may try that way just to see before I go to building anything like a ramp. Thanks for the suggestion.

That is also a good idea and I do have room for that. However, right now, my tail lights protrude past the frame. So standing it up would require me to protect them in some manner so the rear of the trailer can rest on the floor. Anyway, I'm planning to replace those lights with led lights and will recess them then. Maybe I'll do the "against the wall" thing then. Thanks. Rusty

Those shots are fine! Answered my questions. I guess I'll hafta look those trailers up. Probably outa my price range right now (we're adopting a 7 month old boy:clap2:). And yes, my "in the barn" list will definitely be getting cropped along the way. But it will be worth it. My wife says I gotta look for a side car now. Thanks for the pix.

Alright folks. I have a need. I want to store my trailer up near the ceiling of my garage to free up floor space. I have actually already used a cumalong to get it up there and safety chained it to the joists. It was cumbersome and I had to be careful to raise each side evenly to keep it from tipping. But, I want to make a system to hang it up and get it back down a lot more easily all by myself. That way I will probably use my trailer more often instead of using my truck to go get smaller items. Any suggestions? The bottom of my ceiling joist is 10' 4" above the floor. I thought about building a plywood ramp (reinforced with 2x4s standing on their sides and screwed along the length of the outer edges of the plywood). I would hinge the plywood at the rear to the bottom of 2x4 vertical studs extending down about 30" from the joists. This would allow clearance for the raised trailer to hang below the bottom of the joists. I would lower the front of the ramp and push the fairly light trailer up the ramp and secure the tongue to a stop at the front of the plywood. Then, I would only have to lift the tongue up and secure it with a safety chain. The plywood would also act as a storage shelf for light things associated with the trailer (folding chairs, small tent, etc. Did all that make any sense? Rusty

Saddle Bag Hinge Screws
Beau-Kat replied to sadicarnot's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Funny that you mentioned this. I just tightened mine up last week. Two or three were loose. -
Congrats on the new trailer! What is the name brand of that one? It is way too cool! I wanna see pix of it's storage areas opened up.

Thanks for the offer Mike. I so appreciate all of the help I receive on this forum! Great bunch of folks. I'll wait a bit to see if Tom can locate the straps that actually go with these bags. Rusty
-
Thanks Tom. I appreciate the assistance with the straps. The strapping isn't the big issue as much as the clips on the ends of the straps that allow me to clip the straps onto the rings on the bag. I'm looking forward to using the bags soon. Although retired, I was rehired in June to help some guys complete their training and eventually replace me. So I don't have all the free time I would like yet. So, here I am on nights. But I'm so ready to take a ride somewhere and pitch a tent for a day or two. These fall temps are agreeing with me now. Looking at the photos of your trip just get me itching a little more to go camping. Rusty

Thanks Sleeperhawk. Didn't expect anyone to be up at this hour. I wouldn't be up if I wasn't at work (and bored).

Hey Tom. I hope you can see the attached photos of what I need. The straps would thread through the clasps where my finger is pointing in the second photo. Rusty To everyone else reading this thread...Sorry for posting this in the Watering Hole. I can't figure out how to attach pictures to private messages. I welcome any ideas on how to do that. Rusty

When I was building my garage, I was standing on a stack of OSB in the back of my truck while I lifted the upper floor pieces up through the ceiling joists. Bad idea! Well, as I pushed a piece of OSB up, the stack I was standing on shifted. I lost my footing and fell onto the concrete, a piece of 3/4" OSB in tow. I smacked my head pretty hard, so the first thing I did was feel aound my skull to see if I was bleeding. Then I looked around to see if anyone was watching. I don't know what got hurt worse, my body, or my pride. The funny part was, even though I did break my own wrist in the fall, everyone at church asked my wife what she had done to me! That made the recovery so much more bearable. Glad to know you are o.k. As I get older, I think about emergencies a lot more and keep my cell in my pocket more often.

Don't know if anyone on here has ever read the stuff at the following link: http://www.pashnit.com/gs850-wht.htm but I found it interesting. This guy starts with his Suzuki GS850 story, then continues on about Ventures, then on to a story about $1000 motorcycles on a 1000 mile ride. For what it's worth, I liked the stories.

VR luggage rack mounting washers
Beau-Kat replied to Beau-Kat's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Kinda hard to see the front mounts in the photo. I guess I would have done the grinding had I not had the option of swapping washers with the Millenium's. And my rack looks just like yours - with the logo in the center. -
VR luggage rack mounting washers
Beau-Kat replied to Beau-Kat's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Well, I got my star washers in the mail so I could mount my trunk rack to my 88. I guess it's a Ventureline rack. It has the V1300 logo on it. Anyway, these star washers were too large to use on my 88's trunk rack. The raised area in the center of the trunk didn't allow enough distance between the front feet of the rack and the shoulders of this raised area to install these large washers. If the rack's front feet would have been spaced about an inch wider, these washers would have worked out fine. I thought, "Now, this is just great. What now?" Then I looked at my Millenium and saw that those trunk mount washers were smaller. It's lid has no raised surface so there was no problem using the larger washers there. Swapped the washers between the trunks and now both bikes and I are happy. Now I gotta plan a trip so I can create a reason to pack a little something light back there. Thanks for your assistance in identifying these washers for me. -
2000 Venture Need more power with sidecar
Beau-Kat replied to labill's topic in Trike & Sidecar Talk
Thanks for that info Squidley. Mine's stock, so I was just wondering. And I really agree with your last sentence. I think I'll leave my limiter as it is. My wife and I are in the process of adopting a boy. She has told me to look into a sidecar for one or the other of my Ventures. I put a Venture rear end in my VMax and have it's low mileage rear end available if I need to lower my gearing. We do live in a coastal area, so would not have hills to deal with for about the first 75 miles inland. Anyway, I've heard some good stuff on here over the years to help me make decisions on all kinds of issues. It's like I have access to Encyclopedia Venturerider! Thanks guys. -
2000 Venture Need more power with sidecar
Beau-Kat replied to labill's topic in Trike & Sidecar Talk
"...it will easily spin to 7500 rpms, without the govenor". ?? Will the 2nd gen turn 7500 before the governor kicks in? I know my first gen will just keep on rocking up the tach, but my Millenium hits the rev limiter somewhere. I'm just not sure where. Just asking. -
Putting R&D into a bigger, better FJR? Really? I would have thunk that Yamaha would have done something really significant like replace the RSV's cassette feature with an air bag, or coffee pot, or toaster, or GPS, or sunglasses pouch, etc. You know, something more useful. A man can have his dreams, can't he?

O.K. I have one statement and a few questions about the Darkside. I rode a friend's 2007 Venture with a car tire on the rear (don't know which type) and I really disliked it. It seemed to be "searching", like riding in and out of the lips of a rut. Now, to be fair, I didn't know the air pressure he was running, but it was probably lower than the 50 psi or so that I'm reading on here. My friend did say that he "Rocked the Dragon" with it. So, if it works for him, then I can't discount that. So, pardon my ignorance about the Darkside, but are the car tires folks run a type of directional tire? If not, how do you decide which way to mount it? Are these car tires even rated for the 50+ psi? My other friend has a Harley Ultra that is a few years old so it doesn't have the recent frame design and larger rear tire. Sweet bike, but he only gets 6k out of his rear tire, and that's really pushing the limit, according to him. When he saw my rear (Metzler) with 14k on it and still looking fine, he couldn't believe it. Yes, I've read the various opinions about Metzlers, but I'm no dummy when it comes to my own bikes. I prefer them and have been running them on other bikes for years. I do all of my own maintenance, so I thoroughly inspect everything often. I ride mostly one-up and do not do the Dragon type stuff on my Ventures. However, maybe I'll try another type of tire one day. I'm open to that. Anyway, does anyone have any experience with Harleys and car tires? I haven't seen any Darkside Harleys. Would there be a recommended car tire made to fit an Ultra? Thanks for your responses.

How do I identify a bad ignition coil?

So what plug wire size is on the 2nd gen? I see the link to the splicers. They say they only work on 7mm size. (BUMP)
