Yup. Just went through mine like that to fix a warped t'stat cover (we use to call the goose necks way back). Did not remove the exhaust pipe. You might as well get a new thermostat cover and the o rings for the pipe while you're at it. And, while I was already down there and had stuff outa the way, I went ahead and upgraded my starter and ground cables to fix the slow cranking.

Pinstripe Eraser!
Beau-Kat replied to reddevilmedic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Do you know if this will work for painted pin stripes? I have another bike that had the accent painting done several years ago. I want to remove the accents without damaging the original paint underneath it. -
Also check your lower (clear) wind deflectors. They have a tendency to loosen and rattle. Sometimes will fall off if not checked and tightened. Just removed, loctited the bolts, and replaced mine the other day.

I know that we motorcycling folks don't always like new laws But I think this is good. From my AMA magazine's STATEWATCH section. South Carolina Laws -Motorcyclists must now take a skills test when renewing their beginner motorcycle license permits, under new rules that went into effect June 3. The rider must pass the skills test to get a motorcycle license. Failure results in a renewed learning permit. Officials decided to impose the new rule because so many riders with learner permits were simply renewing their permits rather than making an attempt at passing the skills test.- I think that is a good rule. Learn to ride and properly handle your motorcycle, show them what you can do, and get that license. Better for everybody.

Don't you go feeling too old. We have four adult kids and two grandkids. Now, while at 55 years old and retired, we have a 3 year old son. Keeping up with him isn't so bad unless I spend a couple hours on our hardwood floor with him building motorcycle garages out of building blocks. Then I discover stiffness in many joints. Wouldn't change a thing though. Congrats!

Anyone seen a Metzeler front chunk out on them? Not me. I've had great service and great mileage out of my three sets of Metz. Ran 17,000 on my first set at 41 rear. No probs. Although, on my second set, running 38 in the rear (why did I go to a lower psi? Dunno. senior moment I guess) and riding mostly interstate and one-up for 15,000 miles, my rear tire tread did crack up when I was breaking the bead to change it out. I run 42 rear and 41 front now. Thanks for all the great info you guys post.

GPS with weather map. Does it exsist?
Beau-Kat replied to etcswjoe's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
Joe, Just went outside and checked with the Nuvi 780 that is a nicer unit and has the latest updated maps. I did see that if I zoom out too far (out past about the tri-county area you and I live within), the rain won't really show up. -

Beau-Kat replied to etcswjoe's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
No. Nothing special about it that I know. Just bottom line Nuvi at the time she bought it. It isn't even the 200W (wide screen version). My wife gave it to me new in 2007, I think. I haven't even updated the road maps. I do have it set to "most detail" on the map features. -

Yup, my old Nuvi shows where the current rain is in my area. Am I missing something in the topic for this thread? -
GPS with weather map. Does it exsist?
Beau-Kat replied to etcswjoe's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
About four years ago, I was on my MM and leaving my daughter's house in Parsippany, NJ about 8pm in the rain headed home. Now I only had the cheapo Garmin Nuvi 200 and that thing showed rain where I was, just like on the Weather Channel radar. As I traveled back to SC overnight, I watched as the rain moved in and out of my traveling areas and respectively on and off the screen of my gps. Didn't know I could see rain on gps. Haven't used it in the rain since, so can't say it still does. Actually, it is raining outside now. I'm gonna get it out of the truck and see if it will indicate rain. -
After 25 years of chronic low back pain, I had successful spinal fusion (L5-S1) in 2007. Best thing I ever had done. I do have a little of that nervy thing in my left leg and foot now, but it doesn't compare to the pain I was in prior to surgery. I can lilve with it for sure. Praying for your successful operation and problem-free recovery. Rusty

Don't turn on the fuel with the fuel pump removed.
Beau-Kat replied to etcswjoe's topic in Lessons Learned
Glad to hear it's all ok and there wasn't a stray spark from trying to start it. I've had to fan out raw gas fumes from spills in my garage (luckily not the one attached to my house) on a few occasions. Since my wife and daughter also ride and may try to start a bike when I'm not around, I also make safety tags for the key switch when I have something apart. Good luck with getting your bike back together. Weather is pretty nice these days. -
Well, I had my Millenium on my table lift to change oil, rear brake pads and fluid, and do some inspecting of other stuff. Worked diligently and felt good about being finished before my 3 yr old boy woke up from his nap and would want to come back into the garage with me (he has his own tools) and would want to help. Anyway, I was letting the lift down slowly and had already disconnected the air hose from the up/down foot pedal valve to get the hose out of the way. As the table dropped, lower and lower, I began to notice that it was looking a little crooked and began tipping. I quickly realized that my roller seat had somehow rolled back under the table and that side of the table was being held up by it while the table and 900 pound bike tipped. My foot pedal valve leaks and I could not just stop it from releasing more air to keep the lift from continuing to drop, so I had to dash to hook back up the quick connect hose and begin raising the table. Everything worked out, but I thought for a few seconds that my bike and lift were just going to heal over and crash to the floor. It was a scary few seconds. Lessons learned-Don't get in a hurry with maintenance. Get the stupid stool outa the way. And DO NOT disconnect the air until the lift is safely lowered. And if that wasn't enough, I have gum trrees and have to watch out for those daggum gum balls in the driveway. I had blown the driveway clear of gum balls and was backing the bike out for a test drive. One lone renegade gum ball ended up under my left foot and my foot rolled on it. Had to strain to keep from dropping the bike. About popped my hip out of joint, but held the bike up. That bike had a death wish for itself (maybe for me too) today. Almost canceled the test drive, but somehow, any ride, even if just a short test drive just makes everything ok again.

"Hello, Scooter Chair? I wanna cancel the order that my wife placed yesterday".

Had 8 until I sold one recently. So, now I have 7. All licensed, insured, and ridden regularly.

While you're that far into it, I'd consider replacing the thermostat cover (the plastic neck that is prone to warpage), and seals and o rings associated with that water pump plumbing area. And probably reflow the soldering points for the CLASS system. What year bug? As I recall, the 1971 model was the first with the louver/vent behind the rear windows.

DITTO for me too.. Of course I was riding with my friends. Why don't things like that happen when there are no witnesses?

How to remove dash bulbs?
Beau-Kat replied to creole's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
A few years ago my fuel gauge worked fine, but low fuel light AND reserve tripometer went out at the same time. I never did see any kind of flashing fuel gauge bars to indicate any problems. It just crapped out. Installed a slightly used fuel sending unit from a 2006 and it has been fine since. I am careful about trying to not use too much fuel additive these days. -
I have that stand. Got it from Sears several years ago. It will work with our bikes, but you have to make an adapter out of hocky pucks, wood, etc. Even doing that, I found that mine still teetered a bit. Someone on here used to make a very nice, substantial adapter out of angle iron, but I don't remember who that was. I have since purchased a pneumatic motorcycle/atv lift table. Hope you find what works for you.

Over 55k and no pump failure yet. I thought I was having pump issues a few years back and went ahead and purchased the recommended Mr. Gasket pump and hoses from Advance Auto Parts. It's in the saddlebag as a just in case.
