  1. I remember years ago the trying to keep decent tires on my race bikes.. Those of you who ride woods and have had time to experience the difference of sharp new nobs compared to rounded out suicide tires KNOW first hand of the importance of having new tires.. My 73 CR250M Honda would go thru a tire a race easily.. Back then, being forced by finances to try cheaper grade tires I ended up using Chin CHeng 760's all the time.. I could get them for 12 bucks a tire and they were really a pretty good nob.. Now I am looking at the same issue with my Venture.. Up to this point I have been very happy with Dunlop Elite 2's and normally wear out at least 3 rear and one front per season - at one time I had a stock pile of 40 tires built up, used to by at dealer cost for $45 each - those days are gone.. ANyway, Jjust wondered if any of you have experimented with the low cost skins for your rides? I am talking Cheng Shin,, King Tire, Maxxis or the like.. I can still get Elite 2s for 180 front and 210 rear but I refuse to go there.. INstead I am thinking of trying maybe a Cheng Shin Barracuda at 40 for ftonr and 60 for rear.. ANy thoughts on the matter??? 'Puc
  2. Good thread,, it brings up an issue that I have decided to implement into my riding experience.. I have been riding now for almost 50 years and have experienced the situation that Randy brought up many times.. Having gotten tired of having this happen and down right MAD because of the loss of several very close friends, I have chosen to do more.. For the last few years I have been chasing down criminals who offend in this matter.. I always follow until the party stops, sometimes I have to come up to their window and tell them thier car has a major problem to get them to stop.. Once stopped I get real close to their face so I can smell booze - if they have been drinking I take thier keys and then call the cops. If not, they get the biker lecture about the huge responsibilty they are shrugging by not watching where they are going.. I have had people break down and cry and appologize for their actions.. Done properly (not in a bad attitude kind of way) it seems to work.. It sure makes me feel like I am doing something to fight this modern day phenomonon... Not saying its for everyone but it works for me! ! 'Puc
  3. I have 4 kids, all adults now.. When they were young and home I would take them for 2 weeks at a time every summer for cross country touring trips.. The name "Cowpuc" is my biker name given to me by them,, it was not uncommon for me to step in cow crap while camping out west.. They also named my first 1st gen "Beeeeg" which stands for B G which stands for Big Girl.. We covered pretty much all the lower 48 and lots of Canada back then.. My 2 oldest girls are just getting started in their Careers (ones a Teacher the other a Doctor) and both of them SWEAR that biking is on their list of "has to" for future husbands.. Oh the memories... 'Puc
  4. That was great.. I have a special treat for our none waving Harley friends around here.. I have a genuine old school Santee Softride - California Springered - 69 Honda CB750 SOHC motored chop that draws wayyyy more attention then Harley I have ever owned.. The non-waving Harley bunch will ALWAYS wave when I am out on the chop BUT,, I just stare straight ahead and ignore them hahahahah - its a RIOT!! Its also REAL fun when the timing is right and I wave at a kid on a moped and then ignore the Harley riders that happen to be there...
  5. Seeing a lot of Mustangs with LE in them in our area.. NOt exactly sure what their thoughts are in handling arrests in such a small car but there sure seem to be a lot of stangs around here.. Inititally I thought that maybe Ford was giving donors to LE but now I here that is not the case. I here that most buying committees look at fuel effiecency and repair stats and the stang came back with great scores... Small motored stangs with turbos are efficient and FAST all in one..
  6. Thanks Brad,, Lord willing a bunch of us are going to try and make it.. 'Puc
  7. Could someone up in Canada please post the current address with ZIP for the place where Leslies funeral will be?? Others have e-mailed me concerning directions from our area and I would like to mapquest it. THANKS Bruce for keeping us informed! Also,,, is Gary out of his coma yet and will he be attending?? Cowpuc

  9. Oh man,, I screwed up big time.. I used all my rides up and just thought of another,, can I have 4?? Thanks,, I am off to the Boss Hog dealer to ride that 350 Chevy powered monster - the one with the optional 400 horse motor,, yeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaw 'Puc
  10. Lets see,, I LOVE horsepower, high speed wheelies and cornering,, Hmmmm,, I had a Buell Thunderbolt a couple years ago that was a little fun,, wayyyy underpowered though but the flickability was great,, Hmmm.. Okkk,, First and R1 Yamaha, then a Hyabusa and then back to the yam shop for another test on the R1.. I LOVE the idea of 102 mph in first gear,, makes me smile just thinkin about it...
  11. Gary and family: I am so sorry to hear this tragic news.. Please know that we are praying for you, your physical injuries and the HUGE emptiness that you must be feeling at a loss so great.. I viewed all the pictures others posted on here of your gorgeous wife and thru tears cannot help but wonder again why these things happen.. If there is anything any of us can do to help ease your pain or help in any way PLEASE let us know.. For the time being, please take solace in knowing that you are not alone in sharing the overwhelming sadness.. Godspeed Leslie. Sincerly Cowpuc Scott & Cheryl
  12. Break 19,,, breaker break,, BREAKER BROKE,,,,,good grief ya bunch a ratchet jaws BREAK... Ahhh thanks for the break there Sasquach!! How bout ya Captn Crunch you got your ears on good buddy.. Seadogs trackin ya down.. Brrrrrrrrrreeeeaakk.. Capn, you may not believe it but the Capn Crunch cereal commericals always touched a funny spot with me back then and that is where I came up with the Handle of Seadog - remember he was Capns sidekick.. I was SHOCKED a second ago when I signed on and found 3 flippin pages of you folks who have had their memory switches tripped by this thread! Maybe I am just getting old and sensitive but iIsnt it AMAZING how we just go in circles as a society?? Now I have been sitting here racking my brain trying to remember the name of our Club.. We had vests with pins on them, our handles and call numbers sewn on, dinner every week at a local diner and business meetings once a month.. Our vests were really cool bright red with yellow lettering on them.. We had a HUGE map posted at the club house with QSL Cards (its been a lonnnnnnnnnnng time since that word has entered the old beaner - thanks to whoever mentioned that earlier..) posted on it from all over the world.. Unlike a lot of todays Clubs that have a tendency of turning into a beer bash, CB Clubs were very family oriented and coffee/pop only.. At least ours was and the number of other clubs I attended were the same.. Also trying to remember the name of my first radio,, it started with a P.... Back in the day there were small mom and pop CB shops all over our area.. Guys with their basements full of CB stuff for sale trying to support their addiction - SOUND FAMILIAR???? Oky Dokie,,, ol Seapuppy done turned ratchet jaw on ya's.. I gotta go 10-100 so this is Seadog, KJP9511 on the corner of walk and dont walk in the big town of banana land signing off.. Catch ya on flip side,, we're gooonne (voice tone goes upward on the end of that - goonne.. Thanks for playing folks... 'Puc oh yea,,,, CONVOY... who the heck sang it...... twas the fifth of june by the light of moon in Kensworth hauling logs. dah dah dah dah dee dee dee dee and Jimmy hauling hogs.. We were headed for bear out on old 1-0 bout a mile out of shaky town,, I said Pig Pen this heres the Rubber Duck and I'm bout to put the hammer down...... hahahahah ohhhhh the mems.....
  13. You are welcome welcome Wayne.. Hope all works out well with your daughter.. 'Puc
  14. You have a pretty cool setup then really.. I was going to suggest that you encourage her to get one of the large scooters to ride.. I have friends that are older (started riding at 75 years old - married couple that both ride now).. They decided to buy small scooters, played for a year and now both ride all over the country on large ones.. However,, your daugher has aquired some skills that are certainly transferable to motorcycling.. Clutching, shifting, balance, braking, taking off from stop lights all learned already in one form or another.. Tell ya what Wayne,, she sounds like a good candidate for putting it all together and enjoying our sport.. You know her as her dad and you know whether or not she is mature enough to handle the pressures of the road on a bike.. Thats about where it sounds to me like it lays right now... Sounds to me like if she is going to do it,you have a PERFECT opportunity to get someone involved that knows the business,, even if it does require putting your daugher into the hands of a Stud hahahaha 'Puc
  15. Stardbogs post about "how many of us it takes to change a light bulb" made me laugh but it also brought up another thought.. Do any of you remember the days gone by of CB Clubs and were any of you involved in one?? If memories serves me correct the vintage would have been 70ish.. I was involved in a club in the day.. I had a 23 channel radio in my car with a powermike, had a "Starduster" antenna for the house and I would bring the car radio inside at night and run it off a car battery.. My handle was "Seadog" and my call numbers were KJP9511 - good Lord that was 30 years ago and I still remember those numbers.. Yep,, "this is old Seadog at the corner of walk and dont walk in the big town of banana land,, KJP9511 takin a pause for the cause"... I used to sit up all night yacking away on that babie.. I will NEVER forget the night the wires going from the battery to the radio crossed and grounded out - the house was INSTANTLY filled with burned wire insulation smoke.. My mom woke up and started coughing asking me what was going on... Just crazyyyy.. Later I ran boots and was able to talk skip with people from all over the world.. \ Sound familiar???? It is totally amazing how even though technology has taken us so far it has acutally taken us in a circle hahahahah 'Puc
  16. and can she drive a stick shift car/truck adequately?
  17. Wayne When you say scooter are you refering to something along the line of a fully automatic moped??
  18. Personally I REALLLLLLY like where modern day braking has taken us.. Indeed, they have become precision equipment - wayyyyyy more capible of controling your bike and saving your life then brakes of yesteryear.. Play in parking lot a little and try to feel your brakes,, try applying them like your adjusting a micrometer.. Brake with your index finger and your toe.. If that doesnt help, there are lots of different types of pad material in use today.. Some folks like Organic pads and others like steel impregnated.. That all will have a different feel to them.. Maybe play around a little with pad types and see if you can find one your more comfortable with?? I implore you to do take the time to figure it out.. You really should not be riding regularly with brakes you have doubts about - peace of mind is important when riding... 'Puc
  19. Drager beat me to the draw.. I have had several of my personal friends and relatives ask me to train and I ALWAYS agree under that condition.. 1 year in the dirt required or I am not involved.. IMHO,, the street is just no place to learn the basics.. Best case scenario is clutch control, shifting, throttle control, braking techniques and balance should all be "habit" long before the highway is under the pegs... Here is a little tidbit of fact that anyone reading this thread may find interesting.. Did you guys know that LOTS of the "Professional" riding schools use little XR100 hondas or TTR125 yamies to train high speed corning techinques on? They work awesome because the motors are easily controled, rider can "OWN" the bike because of its small size and they build great confidence.. I have also had several friends that decided to just stick with trailbikes and stay off the road after they found out how much fun dirtbiking is.. Keep in mind that I am not taking about motocross racing or Harescrambling but just good old small bike woods playing.. If she were my child and she is just starting out I would get a small trail bike and go play in a field with her... GOOD POINT DRAGER!! 'Puc
  20. Now gentlemen,, THIS thread is one of the reasons that I cant stay away from this site!! THANKS GUYS! Not to get you guys off track in your conversation but here is another spin... First off I spent some time yacking with the Victory folks about the new Vision recently.. I was intriqued to hear them tell me that they are aiming at the high end buyers - folks with 6 digit incomes and up - and that is why all the extremes in design on the Vision... Now,,, I am by no means even close to that category of a buyer BUT I do a fair amount of business with bikers who are in that category and I actually laughed when I was told that... That being said,, I can actually see the Trumpet fitting into the groove that the folks at Polaris are chasing.. IMHO, That big motored, V-Max competitive scoot could very well get the attention of the upper cruster.. It would be real interesting to see the Rocket get full touring dress,, it certainly has the lines and the umpph to be a competitor with our long distance runners.. It will be very interesting to see what kind of reliability it comes with.. I also cant help but wonder what kinda real world MPG's that 3 banger will get?? Great reading and very interesting comments to this point! 'Puc
  21. Ok ok,, this is an easy one folks.. Just look at those two puppies,, both of their faces are saying "we like hotdogs but for a chunk o' round steak we will give up da bike?".. And, yes,, that is a very nice scoot, better put some theft insurance on it though cause round steak is cheap!!!!!
  22. We freedom riders in Michingan have had the repeal of our helmet law in front of our Jenny, our Gov, a couple different times now and she has decided to veto it everytime (its headed to her desk again).. Funny thing though,, she has no problem accepting her homelands garbage into our state and polluting the nations biggest supply of fresh water so I doubt her big concern has anything to do with people,,,, maybe more to do with who owns her (insurance companies).. Concerning the idea of 21 year olds on up idea.. So a young man/woman can CHOOSE to fight and die for our country but are not mature enough to CHOOSE whether or not they want to put a stupid helmet on.. I think we REALLY need to re-evaluate the loss of our personal freedoms, especially things that hurt no one but the person making the choice!! I think wayyyyyyyy before any politician makes any laws forbidding choice in matters like wearing a helmet that ALL of the bars in the country should be shut down, laws passed that you will NEVER drive again if you get caught with ANY amount of alchohol in your system while driving, all smoking should be banned (second hand smoke DOES kill) and the like.. Sounds stupid doesnt it??????????? Think about it folks,, how much more stupid are things like helmet and seatbelt laws??? Wear a helmet?? Heck yes BUT ONLY WHEN I CHOOSE TO - not because Jenny Granholm says I have to!!!! I want my FREEDOM back!!! Cowpuc
  23. I have owned 1st Gens for years and have also lived on gravel roads for years.. I have also ridden off road scoots all my life and have enjoyed many long hard days participating at both MX tracks and other forms of bike fun.. One of the things that I DONT appreciate about linked brakes is when I am on anything other then pavement.. If you toss the rear end of the Venture out on a gravel corner in a highspeed throttle slide and touch the rear brake to control the slide you WILL feel the front wanting to wash. What concerns me more then anything is what could happen to the unsuspecting road rider if braking at an instance where the road had some gravel on it and the front wheel brake slid.. I KNOW from experience that this can happen.. Personally from MXing I have learned to use very precise front wheel braking - controlled by my index finger only.. The front wheel has amasng stopping power but it can also take you down REAL HARD!! Please be VERY careful if attempting to design and apply your own linked front brake system.. Theres a lot that can wrong.. Maybe I am overly sensitive about braking designs.. A long time ago I had a friend who built his own 3 wheeler and didnt get the braking correct.. He hit the brakes and his right rear locked and the bike went into the ditch at high speed and slammed a tree.. He is still a parapeliegic (sp)..... 2 cents 'Puc
  24. Ed, VERY glad to hear that your ok!! Could have been a whole lot worse my friend!! Bet the cops were going CRAZY looking for the snowmobile you hit until you woke up and told them the ski was part of your bike
