  1. I was just looking at the repair manual for rear wheel removal procedures and could not help but think it can't be required to just about disassemble the whole rear of the bike to get the wheel off.
  2. While cruising down the road the other day, my wife asked - Will this bike, (our 07 Venture), pull the front wheel up like our last bike would, (a really built 75 Honda 750). I told her that I think bringing it up wouldn't be the issue, it would be more bringing it back down that might cause the problem. I know I have seen a video of a full dress HD being ridden quite a ways on the back wheel. A friend at work that owns an Interstate says that no way will these big bikes come up. Don't get me wrong, my wheelie days are long gone. I am just curious. craigr
  3. I installed a new set of Avon Venoms on my '88 VR and went for a short ride. I feel a vibration over 65 MPH so I came back home and took the front tire and rim to the local stealer to get it balanced. He informed me that the tech said he couldn't balance it because the wheel bearings were worn out and that they needed replacing. At first I figured it was just a ploy to get more money out of me but then I considered that the bike is 21 years old and not being the original owner I don't know just how old the bearings really are. SO I told him I would order the parts since I get all my parts through Flatout and have so far saved a ton of money over the prices that my local stealer has quoted me. My question is just how dificult is it to replace these bearings and what all parts do I need to order from Flatout to make this repair. Also do I need any special tools to make this repair? Any excuse I can find to get new tools works for me! As always thanks for all the assitance. MC
  4. hello i got a wheel chuck from harber fright and put on my trailer yesterday i had to let air out of the tire to get it out of the chuck has anyone have one and had any problems alse in the frot if a real tight fit and squeezs the fot tire hany help from anyone that hase one i will be going to pa to rolling in the thunder next week bumble bee kevin wisor 1999 rsv jax fl
  5. I saw twins each pulling a trailer last Sat. at the top of Monarch pass. You decide if it is a car or bike. They are called a Stallion. Ford engine, automatic 5 speed transmission, Air/heat, steering wheel. Looked interesting but not sure I would want one. http://www2.snapfish.com/slideshow/AlbumID=217082880/PictureID=33959842014/a=122922917_122922917/otsc=SHR/otsi=SPIClink/COBRAND_NAME=snapfish/ http://www2.snapfish.com/slideshow/AlbumID=217082880/PictureID=33959845014/a=122922917_122922917/otsc=SHR/otsi=SPIClink/COBRAND_NAME=snapfish/ http://www2.snapfish.com/slideshow/AlbumID=217082880/PictureID=33959850014/a=122922917_122922917/otsc=SHR/otsi=SPIClink/COBRAND_NAME=snapfish/
  6. A buddy of mine had a tire mounted up on his V-Rod for only $10. I just called them up and confirmed that they will mount motorcycle tires for $10 if I take the wheel off. This is an automotive shop and you have to take the wheel off for them, they do not work on motorcycles. I have no affiliation with these folks, just trying to help those of us here in the Panhandle who's tired of getting ripped off for tire mounting services. 7. Ok so, I want to change my front wheel bearings as I think its time. I can get new bearings no prob. I can press in the new bearings no prob. My question is how does the home garage weekend mechanic pull the old bearings out ? I see fancy [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArFC3xPHhGA]tools [/ame]sets advertised to do such jobs, but I just don't have the budget for that, nor would I use it often enough to justify even if I did. I have looked for tool rental places but no motorcycle tools appear to be offered. Sure, I could pay someone to do it for me but that's no fun. There must be some trickery I can use. Lay it on me folks. Thanks, Brian H.
  8. I got a new rear tire for my 87 xvz1300. before putting it back together I realized the splines on the wheel were shot and the splines on the outward plate aren't much better. I figured no problemo I've got one on the 84 xvz1200 parts bike that I'll just swap out. Guess what, the wheel spline gear would work but the differentials are differant. The outer spline plates have differant bolt patterns. So, now I'm in need of either an entire final gear drive differential or just the outer plate if anyone has one they've dissected already. (86 and Up 1st gen XVZ1300). If any one has got one laying around they don't need and don't mind giving a fellow member a hand send me a PM. let me know what you want for it.

  10. if anybody can tell me the best place to buy some wheel bearings on line for my 83 that would be great, thank you.
  11. I need help. i want to put a 20 inch front wheel and new rotors on my 99 rsv , any suggestions or know where to find one made for it?
  12. Many of you may remember my story from New Mexico on the way home from Sturgis titled "May Pop Metzler in New Mexico". In that story I was forced to mount a Dunlop Harley Davidson used rear tire in Tucumcari, New Mexico to replace a fairly new Metzler that sudden showed thread all the way around the tire on a long lonely New Mexico highway. Well that was last August and about ten thousand miles ago, when I was fortunate enough to find a used tire with some tread on it that was the only fitting motorcycle tire within hundreds of miles of my location. Back then in New Mexico I paid $20 for the used tire and $6 to have it mounted and ballanced on the wheel. I had to remove and reinstall the wheel. Yesterday I removed the wheel again to replace that tire because once again I have thread showing. I got all the goody out of this tire too (10,000 miles). I'm amazed how much Goody, In fact I got more mileage out of that used HD Dunlap then I've ever gotten out of any new tire I ever purchased except the free front Metzler I'm still running that I got in Daytona 2008 (12,000 miles). $26.00= 10,000 miles rear tire life. Not bad
  13. Out of the two MC Stand/Wheel Chocks that Harbor Freight sells, which one is the better for the 2nd Gen. RSV? I would be mounting it to a wood deck trailer. Do both of these when mounted to the floor or trailer deck support the bike for free standing? Does the lower cost one (96349-2vga) have any problems with the side rail/tubing hitting the bikes break rotor? 14. OK one more question popped to mind. What else do I need to remove from the wheel to get a new tire on it? and get it balanced? Do I need to remove the Disk and any other stuff from the drive side or the brake side of the wheel to get this done? Does the wheel need to be bare of all that is not and integral part of it? Thanks for all the help on this.
  15. I have to remove the rear wheel on my RSV and have the tire changed. I have the jack stand adaptor with legs but from pics I have seen I think I have to go quite high up in order to get the rear wheel off. I am some what concerned about going this high up, any advise? Harry
  16. Well ,I did it. Picked up a new Uni-go from schoolhouse in Ohio last week. Brought it home in the back seat of the car and installed the tongue and wheel. Did the wiring thing and had a go at it. Never pulled a trailer before and I have about 40,000 on my '06 RSV. Put 70# in it and tried it out, didn't know it was there, can't see or feel it. Had a friend ride behind me to see if all was OK. It just follows along. so far I've tried about 3 rides of about 40 miles each. took it up to 70 for a shot and did a lot at 62 or so. Seems like its going to be OK. Got an extra set of wheel bearings with it just to be have it they go out on a trip. I think the bike center of gravity is lower with it connected and actually seems easier to handle in the parking lots than with out the trailer, I will keep you posted as I gain experience with it
  17. Ok so, I have a first gen ('84) front wheel that is damaged, the rim is bent. Before I throw it away I'd like to salvage the wheel bearings for the spare parts box. How do I remove them? Can it be done without trashing them? Do I need any special tools? Thanks, Brian H. Uxbridge Ont
  18. Does anybody have handy the industrial numbers for both front wheel bearings? Also, are double-rubber-seal type appropriate? Thanks, Jeremy
  19. First, I have to say that the car tire discussions on here lately have been some of the most civil I have ever been involved in on any forum. Good job, guys! Anyway, I haven't noticed any discussion on another aspect of the Darkside. Rear M/C tires on the front. One of the reasons we run c/t's is for the long wear life. To compliment the rear c/t, some have taken rear m/c tires and mounted them in reverse on the front wheel because rear tires are built heavier since the majority of the weight and acceleration forces are on the rear. But why in reverse? This is from the Metzler website: "Rear tires can be mounted at front wheels? When producing tires, the top cap is heated with an angle bump on the carcass. To prevent the detachment of the assembled edges the tire has to be mounted (concerning the main stress: acceleration force at the rear wheel or brake force at the front wheel) corresponding to the respective declaration. Therefore the declaration of the driving direction at the tires sidewall is a very important safety regard and has to be noticed absolute. It is not allowed to mount front tires at rear wheels. In case you intend to mount a rear tire on a front wheel it has to be assembled contrary to the driving direction declaration (direction of the arrow at the tires sidewall). Please observe the standards in your country. In any doubts we kindly ask you to consult your dealer." Just look at a normal bike. The tread direction is opposite on the front from the rear. One tire is oriented for acceleration and one for braking. Just some more info for those considering the Darkside.
  20. At least until this Dunlop Elite 3 wears out. I bought a used wheel off ebay. They didn't show the tire very well and I didn't care because I wanted the wheel and rotor. Well, lo and behold, it shows up today and the tire looks almost new. I'll run this tire off until it's gone and come back. I can't turn down a free tire. I bought the wheel, rotor and tire for 142 shipped. Now tire changes can be done at my convenience and faster. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.com%3A80%2Fsearch%2Fsearch.dll%3Ffrom%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dm37.l1313%26satitle%3D400005069327%26category0%3D%26fvi%3D1&item=400005069327&viewitem=

  22. Ok guys, have a question about transporting a VR behind a 5th wheel RV. Does anyone make one of the bike lifts that mounts on the back of a motor coach for a 5th wheel RV?? When retirement gets here, want to become full time 5th wheeler and need something to haul the bike on. Trailer behind RV will put me overlength in a lot of states. Any ideas?? Don H.
  23. Hi guys, returning rider needing help again. Please bear with me, I'm only 30 years out of practice when it comes to motorcycle repair, I want to make sure I've got it right. I've pulled my front wheel off to get the rotors turned. I'm sure that greasing the bearings is the proper thing to do as long as I've got the front wheel off. I'm assuming plain ol' grease is good enough. But if my bearings are bad, will I be able to notice this visually easily or do I need to clean them off with gas first and visually inspect them? Any other things I need to look for as long as I've got the front wheel off? Thanks!
  24. I figgered I'd toss this out there. Does anyone have a rear wheel off a 2nd gen they're wanting to get rid of? I'm not worried about the paint or what color it is. I'd just like to have a spare rear wheel and brake rotor to have an extra tire mounted up.
  25. Steering Wheel tat is .... watch that small Video Compilation. My personal Favorite is around 2 Minutes http://www.chilloutzone.de/files/09012401.html
