  1. Two days until I start my week of traveling down through NC. First stop is in Nags head for 2 days. Making our way to the Iron Horse Lodge to ride the Tail of the Dragon. Finish the trip by going up through WV via Charleston. 7 days and hopefully about 2,000 miles of great riding.
  2. I'm making a 1 way trip from Vacaville to Seattle on my 89 Venture. While I was visiting my daughter and granddaughter I purchased this 89 Venture. I plan on flying in Sat Sept 18th and riding back on either Sun or Monday. 1st stop is Corvallis Or where I have friends. Next day into Buckley Wa. You would have to make the solo return trip back.
  3. me and a good friend went to fort smith, ar. today, and got lost going and coming. we left at 7 am and just got home after midnite. some how we ended up at the hub and ate dinner. than we stopped in steelville, mo. and picked up my cushman scooter winter project. it was the trip from hell. the folks at the hub are looking forward to seeing our group again and i saw our rally tshirt on the restaurant wall from last year. back to the hub again in 2 weeks. can't wait. bill
  4. We rode up to Kentucky today to check up on and cleanup our family cemetery. It wasn't in too bad of shape, as local relatives there take fairly good care of it. It's in the middle of moonshine country. Kinda remote, and on top of a hill. Longest ride I've had with my son, and his girlfriend rode back with me. She may never get back on his GS850....lol. All went well, except that we are now replacing his stator. Good thing I kept the parts bike. Kinda hot on the trip back though. 6 hours round trip.
  5. Talked the hubby into heading out Thursday morning to Spearfish, Deadwood area for 5 days for a cheap trip! Going to tent it as the trip with the boys to Kentucky a couple weeks ago cost an arm and a leg!! Takes a day to get out there and a day to get home, so we'll have 3 whole days to hit Needles, Hewlett, Spearfish, Nemo, etc!!! Can't wait! We stayed at a great campground last time we were out there. The nice thing is they have a great bar/restraunt on site so when your done riding for the day you can cool down and just walk to your tent/cabin/rv!! I'll post pix when we get back!!:dancefool::dancefool::dancefool:YeeeeeeeHaaaaaaaaa!!!!
  6. We have a big trip planned for the 1st week of July so I am a little concerned about the rear E3. Got to looking at it real close and it is scalloped on the sides. UMMM...what caused that? This is a rear tire and I run 40 PSI in the tire and check it regularly. I ride 2 up about 1/2 time and still check the pressure regularly. As you can see I do not ride the twisties much cause there just not that many roads here that have twisties...Mostly straight road with slight curves compared to the smokies. I got 13700 miles on it so far...still got about 4-5/32 tread depth but it is kinda noisy when you get it off center. I am well pleased with the performance of this tire and feel I have got my money's worth, although i could probably get another 3-5000 miles out of it...why take the chance. You know what they say if you are thinking about changing a tire...you should go ahead and do it...if you are going on a road trip. See attachments for photos...43 and 44 is the same tire looking at different directions...the other one is side view you can see the slight raising at the tread grooves. I am gonna change it just in to be safe for the trip, since we do not know how far we will go and really have not decided how long we will be gone. The wife and I are off from work for 3 weeks and we plan to ride till we get tired then turn around and head back home. The rear wheel is at the closest dealer swapping the tire now. Just wondering...What caused this??? What do you think?
  7. I'm about to turn over 40,000 miles on my bike and I'll be leaving for a 4500 mile trip through the CO mountains in a few weeks. Is the clutch something that I should be concerned about? What is the normal life for a clutch. I do a lot of city riding so I may use the clutch more than some of you. I'll replace it before the trip if I'm getting close to the useful life of the clutch. Dennis
  8. OK ladies! I am very excited about riding over to Potato Creek this year, but at the same time, I've never done an overnight trip ON MY BIKE! I'm low maintenance-- no makeup or hairdryer needed, but are there any things besides the obvious (clothing, toothbrush, what not) that you find essential to bring on a bike trip? I have two saddle bags and bungee cords...... Lord, help me. Thanks! Courtney
  9. BEER24/7 and I just made it home after a 2800+/- , week long trip. First to MD. Thanks to Don and the wife for hosting another Great event. Happy to see old and meet new friends. It was an honor to provide along with Charlie and I, a table dance to all the members there at Quakers Steak and Lube. After MD, we were off to Sturbridge, Massof2sh*ts to see the Grand-Daughters. Spent 3 days getting spoiled to say the least. Then venturing off into the hills of NY, Conn, and PA. We were supposed to go to West Point, but my friend was still out of town, instruction students elsewhere. Oh well, his loss . Then onwards to Washington BS(no long DC) to combat all the ridiculous road construction. Then homeward bound. Weather was fabulous throughout the trip. Only hit a small shower near Port Jarvis.................until we made it home. Last 17 miles, it was dropping buckets. So mother nature was kind enough to wash the stink off of myself. Now watching out the window to see the small tornado that is projected to pass by. BEER30
  10. Just rolled in at 12:30 from Elyria, left there at 7:00am. Good trip, not a lot of traffic and good weather all the way. This was Sue's first long trip, she did an excellent job. She got to experience a little of everything, back roads, 2 lanes, freeway and even some gravel (on the road into Don's). Thanks to Don for the great time. It was great seeing friendss we haven't seen in a year. We hope everyone has a safe trip home. We'll see you again as soon as we can. 3 weeks to the International Rally.
  11. I am going to Rock Springs this weekend and all are invited to ride if your free. I will be leaving Athens about 7 am traveling Hwy 31 to Waco. I will be in Corsicana about 740 and Waco about 900. I will be meeting my brother Rick "Goose" at the Cracker Barrel on IH 35 and the north loop. KSU at 1000 for the ride to Rock Springs. We will be doing back roads and taking our time and enjoying the wind in our face. Saturday we will ride the Three Sisters and anywhere else we want to go and Sunday we will head back home. If you want to go make sure and let me know so we don't leave anyone. I can also give you Hotel info if you need it. Right now I think we have four bikes ready to go but all are welcome. I am taking cards and dominoes. This is not a guys only trip. I know at least two couples will be riding two up. The New Mexico and Colorado Trip for July is still on and more details will be sent out soon. This will be the first road trip for the new Motor. Pull over, I want to drive now. It's my turn to drive...can I? Can I??? It's gonna be a longgggg trip! We are meeting ScaryLarry, Wanderer and Double D in Beaver Dam, KY at 10:30 am in the morning. Anyone else coming? Everyone have a safe trip! Don
  14. We're heading south in July and I'd like some help on the best route from Boston to Washington, DC. I know the route from here to Boston well, and I know where I'm going after I get to Washington. I looking for a fast route from Boston to Washington, but I don't want to get in heavy traffic. We'll be traveling this area on a Sunday. Washington is pretty much the beginning of this trip and Nashville is the destination with some nice riding in between (Skyline, Blueridge, Dragon, and a bunch of other roads). Any and all help is appreciated. John
  15. Well, my son and I were off to Florida from Chicago for his summer vacation. he wanted me to drive most of the way as he doesn't have much long trip experience. So I got into the Windstar and headed out for Florida. I TOLD HIM I didn't like to voyage too much at night, especially this time of year. So when we hit South Indiana, near sundown, as I was chatting with him, kinda facing him occassionally, I saw in my peripheral vision for the first time in my life a DEER coming right onto the road, almost exactly in front of my vehicle! The vehicle has a bad balanced left front tire, so I had about 1/3rd of a second to make a decision. The deer looked to be about a few months past Bambi, (and you know how one "imagines" outcomes in split second timing) so I controlled a hard swerve to the left hanging on with both hands with white knuckles, (so as to not go off the road to the left) and then a hard return swerve to the right, while missing the deer by inches as it (in panic? or stupidity) hesitated a split second, to continue on across the road behid me while my son saw it leap into the front of the oncoming traffic - to get slammed by a huge semi! WOW! It took me a few minutes to mentally recover, going over the scenario of having the radiator smashed to failure and stopping our trip at once. My son then got a taste of the dangers of night driving. Later the following day, as I drove nearly 12 hours, he took the wheel while I prayed to trust his driving while I nodded off. Woke up to the sound of the tread separating from the tire as I split second "coached" him to hang on and get off the highway to the left, controlling the steering with all his might. That tire and subsequent starter failure separated me from nearly $600.00 of roadside assistance - courtesy of the good 'ole boys near Atlanta. Yes, I was grateful we got "r" done, but my trip was greatly subdued owing to my initial bankruptcy. Good to be home now, while he enjoys the summer in Florida. Sunrayman:sun:
  16. Ok, I put a Utopia backrest on the bike and I'm wondering where you taller riders have it adjusted. So far, I have it as far down as possible and as far back as I can get it. I'm not sure if I like the thing to be honest. Might take it off the bike before I ride to Oberlin. Maybe a long trip is just the thing I need to decide weather to keep it or not. I've never rode a bike before with a backrest and it's a bit weird to me.
  17. My wife and I are going to Delaware in a few weeks for a mission trip with the Church. That trip will take 6 days. I'm off for 2 1/2 weeks so I'm going to trailer the bike up. I want to leave Delaware and find a place where I can ditch the truck and ride for a few days. We want to see Niagra falls and any other interesting places around the area. We don't like crowded roads and will do almost anything to stay off the interstates. Any ideas will be helpful. Thanks in advance. PS I'm located in Tuscaloosa Alabama
  18. Went over to Don's(B2dad) this morning and got 'dem gauges installed...finally. Took me about 4 hours, working at a comfortable pace. I needed the practice for MD. http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/Image1.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/Image2.jpg http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/Image3.jpg The B2 Bomber is good to go for the trip to MD!!
  19. hi folks.. On my recent 7400 mile trip we crossed into Oklahoma and onto a short portion of Route66.. neat.. then we looked at each other and decided that perhaps doing the Route66 run would be a good trip.. If I understand it correctly, the "route" starts in Santa Monica California and ends in Illinois? Has anyone done this trail before? If so, how many miles is it and how long does it approximately take to do it? We're not the type of riders who like to stop at all the tacky shops and tourist traps but like to ride and will pull over for what is worthwhile.. We're also not 'campers'.. being gentlemen of leisure, retired after 30 yrs of military commitment, we're happy to 'hotel' our way through road trips, thanks =) Nothing like a hot tub after 500 miles a day of slab riding.. If you've done the run and have any advice or suggestions, please drop me a line (email is fine).. we're starting to plan our next spring road trip early lol..
  20. Hi folks.. Back home after a looooong road trip through the USA.. Departed Halifax Nova Scotia (that's in Canada, north-east of Maine...) and road the I95 down all the way to Key West Florida, them back up past Orlando and through Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana before stopping for a visit at Goose to learn how to do the venerable Carbs and Valves tasks on the bike. Having read all the articles on how this is supposed to be done, I would never have attempted it on my own bike.. but having someone show you how its done is a different matter.. wow, so much to learn and so much to absorb in such a short period of time. We got the carbs cleaned out, floats reset, a few this and thats to it.. Then to adjusting the valve clearances.. wow.. What took us a day to do would have taken me a month of humming and hawwing over the winter months wondering if I had done it right or understood what the heck the articles were referring to.. But Goose is good at what he does and we sailed right through the work and got it all done.. Though I've torn down multi-million dollar aircraft in my days, doing the same to your own bike is a totally different story lol.. Such a long distance to go to learn how to do this work you say? Yep.. but visiting Goose was the cause-result-purpose for my spring road trip.. Was it all worth it? HELL YES.. wow.. Though some of the valves were close and some were quite 'out', the difference in the engine feel is amazing. The engine doesn't buzz anymore, it purrs.. less vibes and less noise coming from the engine. Impressive. The carb work did wonders as well. The exhaust sounds a lot smoother.. huffing instead of in-articulated puffing (if that makes any sense..) Throttle response was better as well.. However, out on the highway I found I had to relearn where the power curve was as everything seems to have shifted up more.. I used to be able to auger up hills in 5th but now have to drop it into 4th gear but it's actually better as I found that my throttle isn't as wide open in 4th than it would have been in 5th to dump more fuel into the system to get me up that big hill. Quite different and quite good. I LIKE IT!! Goose made mention that all this work could possible net me perhaps a 3 mpg improvement overall.. if it does, great... if it doesn't, no worries as the bike feels soooo smooth compared to before.. almost like new. My ride buddy and I traveled many miles together these past two years and we know that I always burn more fuel than he does.. and we know by how much of a margin.. usually on a full fuel tank at fill up I'll take on about .5 to .7 of a gallon more than he does.. but on our return trip, it was so much better, typically .3 to .5 more of a gallon than he does.. Funny enough though, I thought this was kind of odd then it occurred to me that I always lead and he's always behind me.. So riding home late last night in 40'F weather, he took the lead and yes, how about that.. he's burning more than me lol.. Silly of me not to have thought of it earlier.. now we know why such a discrepancy in fuel burning.. lol The short of the long is that after 61,000 miles on my bike, the work done with Goose on my bike was very much worth it, and much appreciated! Our last morning in Maine, about a week after having the work done, I discovered my left rear cylinder was not firing at idle. I had a cold jug though the bike idled OK.. The day before, in the wet conditions, Every time I came off the throttle the bike would huff puff and then bike fire like a pistol shot, and I knew it was from the left side. I checked my vacuum plugs as I had changed them recently but all was good, and no exhaust leaks were found.. At highway speeds all felt good.. the bike made good power and fuel burn rate was normal.. but there I was that morning with a cold jug.. the exhaust port was stone cold. CRAP! Luckily there was a Yamaha shop nearby and when I explained to him about the work I had done, the riding conditions the day before etc etc.. he simply drained the carb for that jug and presto.. all is good.. He suggested that perhaps I picked up some dirty fuel along the way that might have plugged up the pilot jet, not giving the engine any fuel at idle but giving it when the needle comes up.. The first time he drained it there wasn't much fuel coming out.. then ran the bike, and drained it a second time and a lot of fuel came out.. The bike has run impressively again after that... wow. Long road trip.. from 40'F to 99'F and back within 2 weeks is hard on the body for us pale northern types.. lol.. time to rest now.. looking forward to my next road trip soon.. =) Once again, thanks to Goose for his patience and skills. Good instructor! Cheers
  21. Leaving the ATL on Friday for Jacksonville and want to stay off the interstates for as much of the trip as possible. Thinking of getting off I-75 at Macon and getting on US 23/341 to Brunswick and taking I-95 the short rest of the way. Anyone familiar with that route or have any alternate suggestions? Being a holiday weekend, I really don't want to deal with interstates all the way.
  22. I have Friday off and was considering a LD ride. I went to my favorite weather site, The Weather Underground (Wunderground) and was preparing to check the major cities along the way. I just happened to see their new Road Trip Planner, and clicked the link. It is just what I was looking for. It shows me the weather along my route: sunny at both ends and possible t-showers in between. I'll keep an eye on the route, but meanwhile I can start planning something else. I love Wunderground. 23. I thought I better be consistent and post these pictures from our trip to Virginia for Clare's surprise party here! http://s7.photobucket.com/albums/y26...y%2022%202010/
  24. Eileen and I just checked into our hotel in the Boston area. I have my one year checkup tomorrow to see how the cancer is doing. I'm not too worried about it, I am confident that things are going well. It was a long drive and we are tired but it was an OK trip. Weather is nice and it was a fairly relaxing drive. This was our first long trip in the 2011 Kia Sorento. Driving about 70 MPH most of the time and occasionally running close to 80 before catching myself and slowing down, it got about 27 MPG. I think that pretty decent for a AWD mid sized SUV. I'm very pleased with that. The 2004 Sorento that we traded in only got about 18 MPG under the same driving conditions.
  25. Just got back from my trip to view the latest shuttle launch. I did my first Iron Butt trip leaving thursday from Houston to the Kennedy Space Center to view Launch on Friday. Went 1056 miles in 16 hrs. Great weather for the ride over, met along the way with some fellow Houston riders on Goldwings. Venture rode fine as always, seat did great with Rick Butlers mod. Only lost a highway light by a rock on the way back. Got a little wet on the ride back thru Baton Rouge, and was hot getting back into Texas. Have cleaned the bike and ready to go out again. Here are a few pics of the launch.
