  1. I live in one of the best spots in the country for rides - Pacific NW - Have 3 scoots and my only dilemma is which one comes out of its stall today. During the week when traffics down and the roads are dry the 86' Eliminator ZL900 comes out alot and it's to the mountain roads for some sssspppppeeedd handling rides. Day trip to Seattle - 2 hour drive - or to the ocean beaches 1 hour ride with no rider many times it's the 82' Maxim XJ110J - more room to carry stuff and lots of POWER to keep up / set the pace with buds on crotch rockets. When it's Momma and mwah out rolls the 83' VR for comfort, speed and handling for two up, especially on longer hauls - like those improv trips to BEST rib joint in the NW in Spokane, WA - 10 hour round trip. Come on out for a ride and a BBQ anytime. Bull
  2. Hello out there. i'm new to the site and new to postings and would like your feedback/advice. I'm planning my first serious road trip from the rio grande valley (southern tip of texas) to south bend indiana in june. please shoot me some advice on how to prepare for this trip.
  3. My friends, I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and a great start in the new year. As for me, well here is my story For months I was talking about nothing else than our trip to Germany. I had not spend christmas with my family for over 23 years and Alan had never been there, so it was even more exciting for him. However, as it turned out, NOTHING happened the way we imagined it. My parents big 50th wedding aniversary party was canceled. My dad is in the hospital in a koma, awaiting a tripple by pass (the second time) IF he recovers. I never had a chance to even talk to him, but I wispered in his ears that I would come back to see him when he comes home. Christmas eve without him was not the same. Than Alan and I both got the flu. Not what you want when you an vacation. To make matters even worse, my best friend's husband (age 51) past away two weeks prior to our arrival. She did'n want to spoil my christmas with her news, so she waited to tell me until I got there. It hit me like a hammer, we've been friends for 20 years. Needless to say , there was no party either. We did managed to do some side seeing and Alan loved driving on the Autobahn ( no speed limid). This is the short version of our trip to Germany. Nothing but sadness all around. We are so happy to be back home. Yeap, and the new year is not starting off very good either. I'm sitting in a hotel somewhere in Hammond Indiana for two days, waiting for my truck to be repaired (needs an aircompressor), and that on my first load out. I sure hope the rest of the year will be better. ON A LIGHTER NOTE Alan and I spend the New Years at the casino. He won $1200 and I $2000. It sure comes in handy for not going to work the last two weeks. So, that's it, I wish I had some thing better to tell you all. Please keep my dad in your prayers. I wish you all a wonderful and happy New Year Al & Renate
  4. I am planning an rv trip to arizona at the end of jan. 09. I will starting vancover, bc. I realize I must go though a mountain pass. Any suggestions on witch pass to use at that time of year? what temp. in arizona at that time of year? ps. am I crazy. RV is truck 2wd and 26 foot trailer.
  5. Well, after my trip to Oregon and Glacier NP ride last year I'm planning on Alaska for the summer of 09. Thinking of going back to Glacier NP, to Banff and up the rockies to Dawson Creek and then the Alaskan highway to Fairbanks. From there to the Arctic circle and back again. I've read a couple of ride reports of people doing it on their Goldwings, so I figure my RSTD can do it fine. Anybody else taken this trip? I'm planning on picking up the Milepost this year to start planning. I need to make the round trip in less than 20 days, so I'm a little concerned about the timing of everything.
  6. Some of you seemed to enjoy my recent photos from Utah and I found time this weekend to upload a few photos from our 2007 trip to Yellowstone and Glacier National parks. This trip was with basically the same group and our wives flew in and out of Jackson Hole, WY. We made this trip in July of '07 and the Going to the Sun road had only been open for a week or so. We also rode Beartooth Highway from Red Lodge to Cooke City. Attached is our route out of Jackson Hole. The photos can be seen at: www.traynorphoto.com/Glacier/ Dennis
  7. Thanks for the welcome y'all. I hail from "sunny" NW - Port Angeles, WA - great riding country just always pack your wet gear. ALWAYS looking for riding bud's and will join most any road trip, especially fond of the really important one's - like that 800 mile round trip for the BEST ribs on the planet in Spokane, WA out by the old Air Force air strip. Hobby in the winter is scouring Craig's list, and other venues for the older, classic or soon to be classic rides for those fixer bikes, bringing them home to my shop and giving them a new life. The rest of my time is spent fishing and riding. Give me a shout, let's go for a ride or hook up in the shop and skin some knuckles. Jim "Bull" Have some ecletic rides: 83' Venture Royale' 82' Maxim XJ1100 86' ZL900 da' Eliminator
  8. I know it's been a while, but I have finally uploaded several photos from our June trip to Utah. Several of my riding buddies and I rode from Central KY to Grand Junction, CO where we met our wives who flew out. From there we rode a 6 day loop through the Utah National parks while also taking in Monument Valley and Lake Powel. Here is the link to the photos: http://www.traynorphoto.com/utah/Utah/index Enjoy! Dennis
  9. I am mapping out a long distance trip for next summer - something I have not yet done with the 05 Midnight as yet. I have done all the bike service and added the new tires, bought some good sun glasses and............... It seems to me however - many of you have done this long distance riding thing already- so I was wondering if all you long trip experienced riders might help a newbie in this area. If there were one or two things you would do differently, or one of two things you would have taken along or adjusted or whatever - that would have made the long distance ride more enjoyable (safer, more relaxing etc) ...what would those one or two things be???
  10. ARRRRRRRRRRRRRR Here we are getting ready for this much needed trip back home to ohio for Christmas tomorrow. So happy gas prices are down and the trip wont $$$ kill us. WE went out yetserday bout 15 or so miles from home, went to the mall, grabbed some lunch....needed gas......we fill up for the trip......tank was very close to empty...took 24 gallons...( venture van) Its always been reliable, no issues. we drive about 10 miles heading back towards home and decide to stop and get a quick oil change, since dale hasnt had time to do it himself. We pull inot the oil change place and just then the van starts sputtering, and running kind of rough. What the H*** ! We get the oil change and go to leave...van still sputtering....and theres a clicking, knocking noise. sputtering worse at low speeds or stops almost like its gonna stall out. not so bad at high speed.......make it home fine... Dale put a can of seafoam in tank...... we dont know whats wrong.....has a guy he knows gonna look at this morning. Im about fit to be tied ! hoping it isnt anything serious and soemthing we can fix easily and quickly......wondering if we got some bad gas? doesnt think its the spark plugs but a possibility. Did a quick online search for a car rental to drive to ohio just in case........ouch , blows my mind how much that costs! I cant imagine how mad i will be if i dont get to go home.......and its too late to ship presents, etc. ok, i needed to whine a little.........im done now........ anyone have any ideas what it could be?
  11. Has anyone ever taken a motorcycle vacation? Was thinking of taking an European trip for my 40th next Sept.
  12. I don't usually write letters or post things like this but I have to this time. I purchased a Zumo 550 about 18 months ago and I've loved it. It's been great and done everything I could have wanted. A couple weeks ago I took a trip to Florida and on the trip I had my first problem. The unit locked up and I couldn't get it to do anything. I tried all the usual stuff like pulling the battery and doing a hard reset but nothing worked. When I got home I called Garmin for some help. We went through all the steps again and it was obvious I would have to send it in. The unit was out of warranty so I was just hoping it wouldn't cost too much. The Garmin rep. said she had heard of this happening before but it was very rare and she'd never heard of it with the Zumo. She said it was obvious I hadn't done anything wrong so she was going to cover the repair under warranty anyway. (I hadn't requested that, she just offered) I thanked her and sent it off last week. I expected to have a repaired unit some time around Christmas if I was lucky because of the season, vacations etc. I had no complaints because after all they were doing this for free when they didn't have to. When I got home yesterday I had a brand new unit waiting for me. They even loaded the most current version of maps so I don't have to purchase them. There and back in one week!! Over the holidays!!! FOR FREE!!!!! Now that's what I call customer service. The Zumo 550 is already the best bike GPS out there and with this type of service I have really become a loyal customer. With the differences in GPS systems becomming less and less, this is what will continue to keep Garmin as the leader. Just had to let you all know.
  13. I've put a total of 140,000 miles on 2 different Gen II ventures and made an interesting discovery at deals gap 3 yrs ago. I had Metzler 880's on my 2000 Venture and knew that I would probably replace them after the trip. The center flat spot was getting to annoy me when turning. But after spending the best part of 2 days running up and down deals Gap the edge was gone. I had a better trip back to Ohio than the trip down! So what I have learned is that when the tires get flat spotted from the TOO MANY highway miles I ride that all I need to do is find a nice big blacktop lot [preferrably new sharpe black top].....I run about a 25-30 mph nice lazy figure eight and run about 20 minutes or so with some cutting tight enough to put some pressure on the tires but not enough to get scary and you will be very surprised when that annoying little step is gone! JerryK:Venture:
  14. Hey Padre seems you somehow turned off receiving PM's. So I can't send you a reply. Anyway, Jeff said we'll meet you at the clubhouse at 9 on sat. if you get to go. We'll probably be stopping up at Bethel store to meet up with ADC. Should be a nice trip. Margaret
  15. Hi all, I haven't been around to post in a while. Me and my poor broken butt bone had to make a last minute trip out to MN to see my daughter play the nurse in Romeo and Juliet at Minnesota state. She was amazing! Then I had to fly to Wyoming and check in on my family here. All kinds of fires to put out all of the sudden. I drove through Cody this morning, I took a couple of wildlife shots that I'll post after I get home. It's been a good trip but my arse is killing me!!! On that topic, any opinions on the "road sofa" seat? I have a chance to pick one up after I get home for 200.00 but I have no idea weather or not its going to be more comfortable than the stock seat. Though the back rest has got to be a big plus! I'll post again in a couple days after I finally make it back to WA. PAIN
  16. Picked this up in an email today, wanted to share it. One day, the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family. On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, 'How was the trip?' 'It was great, Dad.' 'Did you see how poor people live?' the father asked. 'Oh yeah,' said the son. 'So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip?' asked the father The son answered: 'I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them.' The boy's father was speechless. Then his son added, 'Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are.' Isn't perspective a wonderful thing? Makes you wonder what would happen if we all gave thanks for everything we have, instead of worrying about what we don't have. Appreciate every single thing you have, especially your friends! Pass this on to family, friends and acquaintances and help them refresh their perspective and appreciation. "Life is too short and friends are too few!"
  17. I have a '03 Venture. I bought it used and it had a Corbin seat on it. The corbin is a nice looking seat and has been pretty good for short rides. I took a 400 mile 10 hr trip on Tuesday. My behind hurt so much that I was standing at every red light that I came too. I had to make a two hour trip today. I had purchased a stock seat a few months back and thought I would put it on and give it a shot. The seat is off a RSV midnight. To say it was uncomfortable is a understatement. Pushed my testies up and was just uncomfortable on the bottom. I did like the fact that it seem to be lower and pushed me a little fwd toward the tank. I'm 5'8" , with a 28" inseam. With all these facts I have been looking at seats and seat conversions. I need to know what others have and what they think of them. I've looked a the Russel All Day, a lot of money, but have not really heard of anyone having one. I know seats are like oil everyone has their own preference. But this is a lot of money, anyway I would go. Need help with options and riders thoughts. Thanks in advance.
  18. I departed Montgomery, Al, Wednesday morning enroute to my folks place near Buffalo, N.Y. And despite the expected cold weather, I took this trip on my trusted dear friend, my 2007 RSMV. And while I was (admittingly) a bit nervous and wary, because I had never "ventured" this long of a trip on any motorcycle, this trip proved to me that I definitely made the right choice in motorcycles. 1060 miles later, I am sitting in front of a fireplace warming up, with some hot cocoa too. The Venture performed like a dream. She didn't even so much as hiccup on the trip. I had the trunk and saddlebags completely packed tight, with an old Army "rucksack" packed tightly in the rear seat. It was 80 degrees when I left the south Wednesday, and I made it to the Tennessee line in a short sleeve shirt. But soon, I had to start layering up. By the time I reached N.Y., the temp was in the 40's, I switched from a half-helmet to full face, I had 3 pairs of military issue "poly-pro" pants on under my jeans, four pairs of cold weather socks, t-shirt, one under-armor long sleeve, one sweatshirt, a heavy fleece jacket, and then my leather jacket with liner. Oh, forgot the mock-turtle neck and face mask...and the thick gloves. All said, I felt like that kid from the movie "A Christmas Story", Ralphies little brother who "couldn't move his arms", he was bundled up so much. But, I was warm. Add to that some engine heat, and some well-designed wind deflection, and I was a happy camper. My aftermarket Corbin seat was actually more comfortable than I had imagined it would be. My arse is not sore at all. If I have one complaint about the Venture throughout this trip (and it is a minor complaint), the stock speakers suck. I gotta get those changed soon. Just not loud enough. But I did get a chance to finally try out the Show Chrome helmet speakers, when I changed over helmets. They worked pretty good. Sorry to bore ya'll...now to the moral of my rambling: The Venture is an awesome bike. I'm glad I bought it!! I'll let you know how the return trip goes (it's supposed to be freezing rain here the day I am scheduled to leave.)
  19. I am thinking that we would like to take a trip on the RSV leaving Virginia and riding a loop seeing the Grand canyon first and then proceeding north to Yellowstone then on back to Virginia. I would plan on camping a couple days then staying in a motel the third day. I would like feed back on the best time of year to do this as well as routing and camping information. Maybe there is some suggested reading material. Our trips in the past have been 3 or 4 day, staying at night in motels. Wife agrees to try the camping, but we will still eat in restaurants. I am planning 3 to 4 weeks to do this trip. All suggestion appreciated
  20. Is there a printable view for the VR assisstance list. I would like to bring a paper copy along when I go I my road trip in two weeks. Cody

    CB usage

Taking a road trip tomorrow. Are there general channels to go to for information and such? All I know about our CB is I make sure all bikes are on the same channel. Squelch, etc. I have no clue really how to get the most of it.

    Road trip

:Venture:This Saturday, the wife and I, are heading out from Birmingham to Sylacauga. We are hooking up with Crooked Creek Riders Club, about 20 bikes, and heading all back roads up to Chattanooga, TN. Depart Sylacauga at 7:45am, arrive in TN about 5 hours later and staying at the Town And Country Inn....the plan from that point is to wash up, and get ready to meet down stairs in the Bourbon Street Restaurant & Bar to watch my Tide go up against the VOLS at 6:45 on ESPN. Sunday departure time approximately 8am. The return trip will take us through the valley of Little River Canyon as well as a scenic route through Fort Payne, AL. Should arrive home in the garage by 3pm. Which is plenty of time to clean up, and crash on the couch. The wife and I both pretty excited about it. Should be a great trip.
  23. Hi All, I have finally completed my trip report covering our summer sojourn thru WI, IL, IN, Canada, NY, VT, NH, ME, MA, RI, CN, NY, PA, OH, IN, IL, and of course, WI. Took it with a friend and my father. Enjoyed it immensely. This is a link to the ride report on ADVriders.com. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=363843 RR
  24. just got back from memphis and st. jude. what a pleasure to spend the weekend with a group of the finest people in the world. we had 19 bikes, not sure how many people. so many neat things to tell about could'nt begin to cover them all. we went to ronald mcdonald house and it was awesome. lots of pic's were taken. went to harrahs in tunica miss. last night with dragonrider, b2 dad, b2 mom, and their son. this was one of the highlights of the trip. b2dads son road in on a zx14 crotch rocket, looked like a young and very handsome yul brynner. whan i first met him, i said oh one of them crotch rocket riders huh? then said just kidding. i have one just like it. any way we ate the buffet at harrahs. and b2's son had to leave to head for home. he was one of those kid's that just seemed to have a certain carisma about him. could'nt put my finger on it. got to talking about him and to my surprise he was not mid twenties like he appeared but mid thirties with kids. here's the kicker. he was the pilot and captain of his own b2 stealth bomber. i was totally blown away, as i think dragonrider was. i have a new hero in life to put next to my other hero audy murphy. what a great guy. mayby b2dad will come on here and elaborate. anyway lewis and i shared a room and when leaving memphis we met 2 couples at the motel on harleys and one must have been a minister cuz he blessed all of our trips home and our bikes. must have worked cuz i had a great trip home and a great time with all my venture rider friends. bill :clap2::clap2:
  25. If I did it right, this should get you there? http://www.venturerider.org/forum/album.php?albumid=164
