  1. What do you recommend to Balance and Seal Tires? I'm looking for 1 product that will do both. Thanks.
  2. Check out the current Rider magazine, July 2012 edition. It has an interesting article as to why you should not use car tires on motorcycles. It also has a quote from John Mosby, a representative of Kumho tires, "Kumho passenger car tires are not made to absorb the reduced contact patch of high camber angles that motorcycle tires frequently experience. Because of this durability can be affected by operating at such high camber angles, which can lead to tire failure. We strongly discourage anyone from using Kumho passenger car tires on their motorcycle." It's a very informative article including detailed pictures and talks about in the event of a crash... will he be the target of a costly lawsuit because he fit his motorcycle with tires not designed or intented for motorcycle use and may have contributed to the crash. "Are the few dollars saved by turning to a car tire outweighed by the potential loss of a house and whatever dollars may be squirreled away for retirement?" I thought this was a very interesting read... i couldn't find it on their website, but please try to find it and read it. i know this probably won't sway the darkside believers... because.. well..

  4. Hi Everyone! It's time for me to replace tires on my '87 and was wondering which tires are your favorites. Since I'm always looking for a bargain I found Shinko's 777 and 230 Tour Master for less than $80. Anyone tried them? Havetime

    Michelin tires

I have found a great deal on 2 Michelin Commander 2 tires..I have never ran these tires so are they good tire yes or no... I would like to hear from someone that has ran them...Road noise, cupping Etc. Thanks
  6. It's nearly time to swap tires again. So far I haven't seen anything I can get real excited about. Bridgestone Exedra poor handling and short life, Dunlop light on construction and short life, Metzler 880 throws chunks, Commander II doesn't have our size, Avons have cracks and so on. So I have figured out there are no good tires only less bad. Bridgestone came out with the new Exedra Max last year. It has dual compound rubber and a high load rating. Has anyone tried these tires yet? They make both a 'b' size and a plain size (150/80-16 and a 150/80b-16). I assume the b is for belted. Can anyone suggest which would be better for the Venture and why? I am considering these even though they only come in black wall and I prefer white walls. Mike
  7. I need a rear tire in Asheville NC ASAP Any one know a good dealer?
  8. I have been using the Continental TK16 and TK17 ContiTour tires on our 1986 for years. Handle great, wear fantastic, and have a good price. So, to reward me for being a loyal customer since 1982 (1981 GoldWing), they discontinued the tire. HOW DARE THEY!!! Don't they know how many classic touring bikes have used these for years? Next, Dunlop will discontinue the raised white letter Elite II. Crap, they heard me! I guess I will try a set of Elite 3 tires on the old girl. Can you tell I hate change? JB
  9. Hi all, great forum as always. I'm in the process of changing tires again. I have an 86' that my wife and I ride heavy and hard pulling a trailer. We'll do 6-10k/year. I've been through most brands of tires and would like to find a rear that would last more than 6-7k. Is there any car tire that will fit? What's the longest lasting non-car tire I can put on? Seems I've spent a fortune in tires in the 50k or so we've put on riding this bike. Too back breaking to be changing so often. Thanks! J
  10. Hello all, I was just wondering if there is anyone close to Akron Ohio that might be able to help change out my tires? I'm willing to take them off and all, but I don't have the tools to break them down and spin balance them. If someone's got their on little garage that is willing to help, I'd be more than willing to through a few bones their way for the effort. Please feel free to PM me. Like I said, I'll take the old tires off and on, I just need help getting the new tires on the wheel hub and balance them. Thanks
  11. Do the 1983 tires take tubes? In other words do I need to order tubes along with my new tires? Thanks
  12. Over on the Ride On thread a couple of guys said they got 24-30k out of a set of tires. That is WAAAAY more than I get. I only get 11-12k per set. It got me wondering what kind of mileage your getting and how your set up. My set up is.... 2010 RSV 2 up most of the time. Combined weight 400+lbs I pull a trailer about 1/4 of the time. E-3s with 40f-40r Lots of mtn. roads.
  13. I just love the way a bike feels on new tires. Just say'n.....
  14. Brought my beast in yesterday for the spring service. I'm planning a road trip next month and when we looked it over the service guy and I agreed the the stock rear (11000km) was looking a bit iffy for a long run. He had a pair of venoms in stock, and I said "Sure, why not." When I picked it up that afternoon I took it for a run to get the 'new' off the tires. OMG! I've never been willing to push the beast hard because it felt heavy in the turns, a little squirelly. Within 10 minutes I was taking lean angles I'd never dared with it before and the thing was running like it was on rails. I actually managed to touch a floorboard to the road. Felt like the v-star 950 I traded in for it... It's a completely different bike. I know I've restarted the tire brand debate, but I had to say it.... I'm REALLY impressed with the venoms. I'll let you know how the durability works out, but the first impression is amazing.
  15. I bought this beauty last night, only 8K miles and lots of nice extras, including a Corbin seat and backrest. I ordered some new Avon venoms also, as the stock tires were squared off and past their best, oh and also ordered a short wide Yamaha windshield. Now do I keep my Road Star...........?
  16. Question..........I put new Bridgestone bias tires on my bike. They don't grip as well as my former bike with radials. What is the harm of switching to radial tires for my 2001 Royal Star Venture? I generally haul a passenger, and I'm an overweight, tall guy. I'm not sold on any brand tire, just wanted a tire which is safe, grips well and doesn't follow all the grooves on the road. Suggestions? (on brand) - Comments on radials? Thanks. Dave
  17. i received an e-mail this morning from Shadetreepowersports in n.ohio about a $40 mail in rebate on avon venom tires, they listy our front tires at $140,99 and the rear at $149.99 i've order many thing from them in the past they always were good to deal with, oh and says the tires are in stock,, steve,,
  18. Well here goes. I've read all the posts about Shinko 777 vs Dunlop 404's. Most of the post or threads were for Gen 1. I am going to put WWW on my 2000 RSV MM and trying to decide on which of the only two brands that handle MT90-16 for the front & 150/90-15 for the rear, Shinko & Dunlop. Anybody with experience with these tires or any suggestions where to find more brands of WWW tires in these sizes. Sorry to start this thing about tires again, but I haven't found any really definitive answers about these tires for a 2nd Gen.
  19. I am having the tires replaced on my 1987 Yamaha Venture Royale. It there any maintance I should have done while the wheels are off?
  20. In for a penny in for a pound. On this years round of 1st gen bike upgrades so far: New tires and rubber front and back By local Two Brothers tires Lawrenceville, Ga. Specializing in MC Tires. Programable TCI upgrade By Dingy New Starter clutch by Dano. So in prep for new Starter Clutch upgrade I'm noticing second stock stator is 1/2 crispy. Evidently, Time to do the high output stator Upgrade. So my question is what is the latest and greatest word on a high output Stator upgrade options for a 1987 MK2 XVZ1300 VR. Might as well do it now while I'm into it this far :mo money:and I have a loaner bike, and convertible to drive around until the 1st gen gets back on the road. Bob
  21. Need some advice I have an opportunity to buy a ’70 BSA Rocket 3 750 triple for $5K. Been in dry storage covered for 30+ years. One owner. Has racing wheels and tires w/ original tires and wheels in boxes that go w/ it. Copper color, looking at it today to determine condition and will post pics. If it is in good condition would it be worth 5K? I know nothing about BSA.
  22. Well, after about 4,000 miles my Avon Venom rear tire had developed cracking and needed to be replaced. I phoned Avon and discussed the matter with them, and though they seemed very helpful (and not unaware of the problem) they advised that I would have to go through my retailer for a replacement. I tried to call SWMototires but got no answer, so had to email them about the problem. They responded quick enough and advised that there should be no problem getting a replacement. Then I started thinking that I might just want to try the new Michelin Commander II's I had been reading about, and use the Avon's as backup tires if the Michelin's don't prove to be all their Marketing Department says they are. I know, the Commander II is not available in a 150/90HB-16 front, but I had been wanting to give the narrower 130/90HB-16 a try anyway so this was not a problem for me. They do make a direct replacement for our 150/90HB-15 rear tires, so that's was a no-brainer. Once I got them mounted and balanced, I only had enough time to put about 15 miles on them. I did like what I felt, and will report back after I get a couple of longer trips made on them.
  23. Here we go....... Looking at tires for my 07 Venture. Currently have the original tires with 14,255 miles on them. Rear is ready to be replaced. Going to replace the front only because it's 5 years old. Here's my questions..... I have read about someone with a Michelin Commander || on the rear. What would be suggestions for the front? Michelin does not make a front tire for the Venture. I haven't had any problems with the Dunlop 404's which are what's on the bike now. Also, the member that has the Michelin Commander ||, has it on a first gen. As far as the riding I do? Mostly highway and around town. Don't have many twisties around Joliet but would like a set of tires that would be good for that when I get the opportunity. The Venoms were discontinued and I know I have read a lot about people using those. Just not sure if I should stick with what I have, or go to something different. I'm kind of one of those that figures if it's not broke, don't fix it. Anybody's thought or suggestions are welcome and appreciated. Thanks for putting up with me babbling. Kevin
  24. 1st; I did do some searches before posting: Bought a 2008 Venture with 9k miles last week. It's still freezing here so I haven't even ridden it yet but I am already scoping out the farkles .... 1. Looking for a recommendation on a tank bag. I usually have gloves, an SLR camera, eyeglass case, and a bunch of little items. 2. what options for a tach. I know I don't really need one but every road bike I've ever owned had one so I feel naked without it. 3. saddlebag liners available? 4. local dealer says dunlop elite III's for rubber. I know there is a million opinions on what the are the BEST tires and I don't want to open that can of worms; just wondering if there is a reason against the Dunlops. had them on my Gold WIng and liked them. I am planning on buying one of the small 0-60 psi hand pumps for the suspension and flat tire inflation. thx in advance for help or suggestions.
  25. I have a 2008 RSV and I am very frustrated with it right now. It has a little over 20,000 miles on it and this is my third set of tires. I have used Metzler 880's twice and now I am using Elite III's. After my tires get a few miles on them I get a front end wobble at low speeds. I talked to the local Yamaha dealer. After the mechanic showed me the cupping I put on new tires, front and back. Both times with the Metzler's the front tires were cupped. Each time I put on a new set it quit for a little while. It has started now with the Elite III's and they probably don't have 2000 miles on them and there is no sign of wear at all. With the Elite III's I used Nitrogen and balanced them with beads. I think the Nitrogen has really helped with the wear and I was hoping the beads would help with the wobbling. So far nothing seems to help. I have read about tightening the front bearing but that doesn't make sense to me if new tires fix the problem for a little while. I really don't know what to do. The other problem is a nagging oil leak coming from the seal around the clutch shaft behind the master cylinder. I have had the seal replaced twice and it still leaks. The shaft feels smooth as it can be, no burrs at all. The second time the seal was replace liquid seal was put around the opening where the seal goes in case there might be a casting problem. But it is still leaking oil!!!!!! It is slower that what it was but I DON'T LIKE LEAKS and I don't think this bike should be leaking oil with this few of miles on it. Has anyone had either of these problems with their bike and what is the cure? I told my dealer that I have 2 more years of warranty left on this bike and it will be back for the next two years if this oil leak isn't fixed. But I am really running out of patience. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Damon Cates
