    2008 Venture
  1. I like to look over the WS, not thru it. Given my height this means the stock WS is about 1-1/2 too high. bike is 2008 star venture was looking at it and seems like I could cut away the bottom to lower it and much more easily mask my cuts. did some searching but didn't find any relevant threads. Anyone done this or have advice?
  2. thx everyone. I'll spend some time with the manual. mounted my baker air wings last nite. definite improvement for a hot day. will check for armrests as recommended. mark in MN
  3. yes, I am using Ipod thru aux input. radio is a little better but still well short of what I'm used to with the GL and J&M systems.
  4. eveyone thx for replies. this might be a really stupid question (wouldn't be the 1st time) but I don't see a mute button anywhere. bike is 2008 Star Venture. am I missing something?
  5. Bought a low mileage 2008 this spring. Replaced a GL1500. SO far I like the venture better than the GL with the exception of the sound system which doesn't seem to have the oomph to provide enough volume to overcome earplugs. Handling is vastly superior to the GL1500. Not sure yet about all day comfort (which was excellent on the GL after adding a $700 aftermarket seat) but I'll get a read on that Friday when I make a trip for work with 225 mile round trip. hoping the stock seat doesn't cause butt burn. I dearly wish it had an electrically adjustable WS like my FJR. Presently adding farkles: baker air wings passenger arm rests (not sure of vendor yet, suggestions welcome) a clock! maybe a tach XM radio mount somehow I have to address the volume issue as road trip tunes are a big deal for me. good bike; I'm very glad I bought it!
  6. I have used a GL1500 sound system and J&M. in both instances the systems had plenty of volume to provide adequate sound in the helmet even with ear plugs. I use my helmet and headset I used with the GOldWing. with the Venture I often can barely hear. I'm wondering if this is typical for the Venture or maybe I have some other problem. I tried a small amp between the ipod and Venture but got too much distortion. suggestions anyone?
  7. Finally got to ride my new (to me) 2008 Venture today as the thermometer reached 56 degrees and the roads were free of ice and snow. a few questions.: 1. engine was not as smooth as my GL1500 (which was expected) but also not as smooth as my FJR with main complaint being a handlebar buzz at 80 mph. Is this typical? 2. I definitely need a tach. 3. how do I switch the radio from speakers to headphones? thx in advance for any help. mark in MN
  8. Thx everyone. I got some shopping to do. I am investigating modifying a firecreek electric windshield for use on my Venture. For me an elec WS is one of the best features a long distance bike can have since I prefer to look over the Ws even in the rain or moderate cold. I should know more about that in a few weeks and will report here if I have any success.
  9. Steamer; thx for suggestion. I will be going thru all the fluids once it warms up a bit here. I made sure it ran right before I bought it as I REALLY didn't want to be dealing with dirty carbs. PO only used alcohol free fuel which goes a long ways towards alleviating the problems with old fuel we have here in the upper midwest where most bikes sit for 6 months of the year.
  10. 1st; I did do some searches before posting: Bought a 2008 Venture with 9k miles last week. It's still freezing here so I haven't even ridden it yet but I am already scoping out the farkles .... 1. Looking for a recommendation on a tank bag. I usually have gloves, an SLR camera, eyeglass case, and a bunch of little items. 2. what options for a tach. I know I don't really need one but every road bike I've ever owned had one so I feel naked without it. 3. saddlebag liners available? 4. local dealer says dunlop elite III's for rubber. I know there is a million opinions on what the are the BEST tires and I don't want to open that can of worms; just wondering if there is a reason against the Dunlops. had them on my Gold WIng and liked them. I am planning on buying one of the small 0-60 psi hand pumps for the suspension and flat tire inflation. thx in advance for help or suggestions.
  11. put a post up on MN Sport Bike Riders forum (MNSBR). you'll get a bunch of suggestions; lots of die hard bikers there. Too bad you're not taking the bike to BIR, the track is great fun on a motorcycle! re: St. Cloud; IMHO nothing particualrly fabulous for restaurants (and I live here!). West of town on Hiway 75 is a place called "Anton's" that I like. better restaurant options at the various resorts around brainerd. for riding there is some real nice roads south of Mpls along the Miss. river. For real sport riding many people opt for the "alphabet" roads in WI. MNSBR has a lot of posts about that. For more sedate riding there are a lot of pretty roads in the lake regions around brainerd. If you're not used to seeing another lake every mile or two it can make for some real nice riding.
  12. Actually I have a firecreek on my GL1500 and have already talked to them about one for the Venture. I'm actually doing a little research for them as soon as I get my bike. It's a fair amount of work developing one for a particular bike so I offered to be a guinea pig and he accepted. I'll report here whats happening as the project progresses. If we're lucky the arc on one of the existing products will fit the Venture fairing. If yes, we'll have a Venture electric option relatively quickly (i.e. a few months instead of a few years.)
  13. RE: WINDSHIELD: I have an FJR with elec windshield. Button on handlebar allows rider to move WS up or down at will. Tilt angle also changes slightly with up/down movement. I like to look over the WS and the electric rise/fall allows me to keep the top of the WS just below my line of sight no matter how I'm sitting. It's possible the seating position on the Venture won't have me moving as much as I'm used to but I'll figure that out pretty quick after I get one. On my FJR the elec WS is the feature I like most about the bike.
  14. Moving up from a GL1500 to a Venture. Wife demands a comfy seat for touring. Gave a lot of consideration to GL1800 but I like the looks of the Venture a lot more, the lower seat, and it seems to have less problems. Been shopping a lot. Most likely will be buying a 2007 or newer. Best deal I see right now is a 2008 with 9300 miles for just under $10k. got a few questions: 1. Are there any problems specific to certain model years of the 2nd Gen design? 2. has anyone reported successful addition of an electric windshield to a Venture? (if not I'll probably be doing it and will report here.) 3. Buying used Venture still under 5 year OEM warranty is there any paperwork I should be getting with the bike? 4. how do I determine how much warranty is left? Looking forward to participating here. Already planning my 1st trip this summer to visit daughter in the USMC in N.C. Mark in MN
