  1. Good afternoon all just singed up to today Have a question to ask i have a buddy who has an 85 vr and he has a problem we are trying to figure out when the tach drops below i think hesaid around 2500rpm i am not 100% on the rpm s but he drops a cylinder and loses the tack above 300 rpm everthing runs great crusies prefect until you start to drop speed or come to a stop thn the tach quites and he loses a cylinder then bring the rpms back and preston you have all four cylinders again. any suggestion's on what to look for.
  2. Anybody else ever have a problem with their tach making noise? At first I thought my speedo needed to be greased again. I greased the speedo and the noise was still there. It would come and go but not stay gone. Then I noticed that when I engaged the clutch when going down the road the noise stopped. I hit the throttle and it came back. Then I had a "DUH!" moment and realized it was the tach making the annoying noise.
  3. Finally got the carbtune pro to sync the carbs but how important is it to check the idle speed first. If it,s important, can someone please let me know where to get a tach to check the idle. Thanks.
  4. I have A 2007 Blue/Black RSV. Lately, I've been having some engine noise static in my headset. Not bad, just annoying.Doesn't do it all the time, intermittent, comes and goes. I have a tach and was thinking that maybe the tach wire is too close to the headset wire at the neck where they come close together.I was going to wrap the coil wire to the tach in aluminum foil and then wrap with electrical tape and reposition the wires to see if that helps.Any one else had this problem? Is there any thing else I should be looking for?Any help or ideas would be much appreciated.Tach has been on about 8 months and have had a problem for about the last 2 months on and off.I don't know if that is it,but I can't think of what else it could be.Thanks.
  5. any one using a tach ? if so what kind ?
  6. Ok so my wife and myself took a little trip up the parkway this weekend on our bikes. I have been haveing some mild trouble with the venture and have eliminated either the battery or the stator by haveing the battery replaced and the stotor checked at the dealor. Also had new plugs installed at the same time. The trouble is annoying but not so much it cant be delt with. What the problem is,is that when you ease the throttle over you get a little skipping and then a sudden surge of power. If you just go ahead and get on the throttle strong then the problem either doesn't exist or can't be felt. This is where things get a little fuzy for me. Until now I've been thinking synch job, But while on the parway about 400 miles into the trip the tach decided it was going to work. I figure short in the wirring or something. But I also notice that the skip and surge have completely dissapeard. After an hour or so the tach stops working and the skip, surge returns. I took her out for a short ride today and the same thing acured. Tach started working and efectively lost the skip /surge but this time I took it easy just to see. She was skip/surgeing but not as noticeable. maybe my imagination but being a rooky to this bike this is what I feel when I ride her. Any help would be gretly apperciated. Thanks in advance. P.S. the tach quite working again and the skip/surge returned although not as bad this time . Like I have already said could be my imagination. Thanks in advance David
  7. Can anyone tell me where the signal pick up for the tachometer is on an 84 Venture Royale? I'm having "issues" with the engine missing and choking off when operating at low RPMs. It misses at higher speeds as well when I try to "jump on the throttle". The problem seems to coincide with an erratic tach indication at low RPMs. Thanks, Scott P.S. I replaced my Igniter Unit Assembly two weeks ago and everything was working great. Last weekend, while on a 200 mile ride it started acting up.
  8. My tach has always been slow on my 86. This was nothing to be very concerned about but it was always on my mind that it could be this way because of something electrical about ready to fail. What with the tach receiving its signal from number 2 coil which in turn runs it through the TCI box then on to the tach. I have always read anything on this site that was tach related in hope of pinpointing what it was that made mine run slow. I have been told that my TCI could be faulty, my #2 coil faulty, bad ground to maybe just a boggy tach. Well the search is over! After running the diagnostic check of the wiring to the TCI. NOT IT. Check of coils. NOT IT. Adding a second ground wire. NOT IT. The problem was the tach itself. I removed it from the housing to look it over and clean it using some electrical contact cleaner. My brother-in-law was here when I took it out and he said that it just looked as if it needed lubed up to free it up. He grabbed the can of Sili-kroil and began to ever so lightly lube the needle mechanism while moving it toward redline and letting it go. After five minutes of this. THAT WAS IT! It is now free as the RPM it reads. Upon further inspection it seems that on the backside of the instrument cluster box that houses the tach and speedometer, on the tachs side of it. There is a unplugged hole that looks as if it should hold a light but there is no provision for one there. Being a 86 this hole has let moisture and the elements into the tachs cluster for 22 years a very unnecessary and troublesome hole that is now plugged. More than enough time to gum up my tach. So if your tach is boggy don't rule out that all it might need is a good clean & lube.
  9. Greetings... This started happening about 1 month ago. It has gotten progressively worse - to this point: Facts: #1 & #2 carbs were out of sync because I played with the Sync screw thinking it was the idle speed screw. Finally Synced them, and played with the idle speed screw. A week Ago - It WOULD Idle at 1000 rpm when warm. It hasn't been run since last friday - It's now Wednesday. Over the summer - The cotten-wood trees have deposited a hideous amount of Fuzz that has been a real pain. It gets everywhere... It rained 2 days ago, and the bike was outside, uncovered. - Today was a rather nice day - I went out to go for a ride this morning, and basicly spent the entire day attempting to actualy get the bike (89 VR) running... Symptoms: It will now - NOT idle at anything less than 1500 rpm. At Idle (like at a light) there is an audible 'click' Where the tach will drop to 0 rpm, the bike will chug slower and slower - then eventualy, (if the throttle isn't blipped) Die... When it is running - It runs well! There is NO problem at any speed above Idle. The Tach will NOT register anything less than about 1500rpm. In other words - I have to keep the idle set a bit high, because it will just die - the tach just drops to 0 if I set it to less than that. What can cause this? Today I tore off the entire fairing, and checked all the wiring, all vacume tubes, spark plugs, etc... I synced the carbs - and finally got it running. It ran well - a lot more pep than it was doing a week ago - but every time I came to a light - it would idle at 1500, then - an audible click - and it would suddenly drop to 0 on the tach and a few seconds later - it would sputter out and die. It starts, as long as I REV it when it catches... But it won't idle correctly. I can play with the idle screw all I want - but If I adjust it down to normal idle - all the above is guarenteed to happen. So what can cause this?
  10. I am installing a tach on my 06 RSV. Putting it on the right side of the bars. Can anyone tell me where the coils are at? The picture in the RSV manual makes it appear it is behiind one of the side ocovers?? Also anyone know which terminal is positive and which is negative on the coil? And does it matter which coil I hook it up to? I don't think it should matter. Thanks for your help!! Erns
  11. Installing a Barons Tachometer on a Royal Star Venture Thanks to Tartan Terror for this excellent article. Installing a Barons tach on a RSV is actually not as difficult as I had anticipated. I did before I started call Barons tech line so that I could clear up any questions I had before I started. I was very glad I did. http://www.venturerider.org/tach/tach_files/image002.jpg I used the Barons Subsonic Mini tach but hook up on all of them are the same. For this model you get a tach, control unit and color change button. I decide to also get the Master Cylinder mount for a clean mount. You can mount yours anywhere you want. http://www.venturerider.org/tach/tach_files/image004.jpg One thing you will have to do is to extend the wiring from the tach if you mount it up on the handlebars. The cable down to the 4 pin connector is too short (Actually tells you this in the directions too) . I added about 8 inches by cutting the connector off and extending the wires. Im a stickler for clean connections for I soldered and covered the connections with heat shrink tubing. I also covered the wires with a wire loom type cover. http://www.venturerider.org/tach/tach_files/image006.jpg Remove the seat and tank as you will need to connect one of the ignition coils. Run the wires neatly to the ignition coil you will see on the right side of the bike just above the dog bone. http://www.venturerider.org/tach/tach_files/image008.jpg Remove the two bolts holding the ignition coil and pull the coil gently out to where you can get to it. In the Tach kit you will see two dividers to put two spade connectors on the coil. Next you will plug in the 4 pin connector. Connect the red wire from the control box to the red wire from the tach (the one in the 3 wire bundle not the 4 pin connector) by crimping them into a single spade connector. Slide this on the extra blade on the Red and Black wire on the coil. Next crimp a blade connector onto the green wire and slide this on the extra blade on the white wire side of the coil. Note: Check connecters before fitting it all together. Make sure the blades slide together. You may need to do a little filing for a good fit. Connect the black wire from the control box and black wire from tach (3 wire bundle). I soldered a short wire extention to these wires and then crimped on a loop connector. This is your ground. I connected this to the rear bolt on the coil holding it to the frame on reinstallation of the coil. http://www.venturerider.org/tach/tach_files/image010.jpg I installed the control box on top of the from with double sided tape. Choose the location for your control button and connect the wires from the button to the wire on the control box. I installed my button on the bars up near the right side controls. http://www.venturerider.org/tach/tach_files/image012.jpg Tuck all the wires out of the way and Reinstall tank and seat. Start bike and test. http://www.venturerider.org/tach/tach_files/image014.jpg Your done now go out and ride it like you stole it.
  12. I have been looking at some on ebay. Most are either single or dual fire. If one of the two would work on a venture, which one would it be?
  13. I want to synch my carbs but I need a hand-held tach to set the rpm's at 1000 rpm at idle. How are all of you who haven't added a tach to your scoot setting your rpms? Up here in Canada, nobody carries these inductive tachs:doh:(the type you clamp to spark plug wire). What are y'all using?
  14. help , i lost my tach and a cyl. , i cleaned the tci plugs and the plug down by the seat , nope not fixed installed another tci , nope , same thing . anybody know why the tach is not working ? when i 1st start it up the tach moves a little bit but a soon as it is running no tach , help thom
  15. Got the Barons SubSonic tach in today and I figured that since I have to take the tank off to install the tach, that I might as well install some mood lights while I am at it. I am considering the Custom Dynamics Standard CD LED Accent Kit. It is $114 for the kit. Is this a good price or should I be looking elsewhere. I plan to put the blue lights on my Midnight RSV, just because I love the look that Boomer has on his bike.
  16. What type of diagnostic tach do yall use. I'm looking at this one:http://www.autotoolexpress.com/ate-esi325.html Anyone have any experience with one like this?-Jack
  17. I know MIDRSV has offered to help me install my tach but with the changing weather and finding time to ride to his place, I have decided to TRY and install it myself. SO if any of you guys have any pictures or words of wisdom before I start this project, please let me know. I am not the best wrench turner but I will try anything at least once. I have already called the dealer as a backup if I screw this up. The tech at the dealership told me he would install it for $50. I am installing the Barons sub-sonic mini teach with 7 color back ground on the brake reservoir. I am waiting all your words of wisdom.
  18. Wife and I headed over to the local Indian Casino over the weekend to play some Bingo (shoulda stayed home and mailed them a check - so much for "cheap entertainment"). Anyway - parked next to a Millenium Edition RSV - white/tan with tan seats - a BEAUTIFUL color combination. anyway - built in to the chrome tank "cover" - on either side of the key were a couple gauges. Tach & water temp. i'd LOVE to add these to my 07. Anyone know if this was a special feater of that edition or are they available????
  19. Lately I've noticed that my 83 cuts out at 6500, like it has a rev limiter. When it does this, the tach drops to zero until you let off the gas. No load, or 1st gear the same symptom. I havent torn into checking the wires or the TCI or anything yet, it still runs and drives fine. Any quick ideas? I'm sure its electrical since the tach drops like that..... PS I didn't see many Ventures at Wildwood NJ.....
  20. Guys, I am helping a friend remove some accessories to be installed on another RSV later. And he has a Trip Master tach with a water temp gauge. Does anyone know if this gauge came with a replacement thermo switch? Thanks, Rick
