  1. I read the thread on windshield cleaners, but here is my problem: I have been using an aerosol cleaner with a wax in it for 4 years. Does a great job, but now the shield has what I thought was etching, but now seems to be a buildup of some sort. Anyone know what I can use to get that stuff off without ruining the w/s? I can't hardly see through it at night when oncoming headlights hit the shield.
  2. Just installed some Harley Road King exhaust and Clearview shield. I know, I will submit pictures soon. Got the exhaust off of Ebay for $50.00 and they also had the 2 inch chrome exhaust clamp which looks great. The Clearview shield is excellent! I like the forward vent it has and the light tent. It is shorter and wider than stock and the lowers are also bigger. The bike sounds really good and the sheild is wonderful. Pictures to come soon. Mark:12101:
  3. So I have a new Clearview Shield coming and also so Polk db401 speakers I guess I should do them both at the same time? I was wondering if I could get some replies on these replacements. Never done either one. Thanks
  4. Thank you Thom!!! I think we cut just the right amount off. I could easily see over the shield, and my ball cap stayed on. Also the polish on the shield helped a lot also. Thank you Thank you Thank you Donde
  5. Hi to all I hesitated to post this but thought it might be of interest to some RSTD owners. I have posted about the whine and the help I got from using Motorkote in the engine and the post on this topic has many interesting comments. Now to my latest adventure..... Several weeks ago I was riding to work early am and the windshield completly fogged and misted over. I could not see anything in front of the bike. Yikes! I started doing some internet and forum searches and found that having a windshield as tall as the RSTD is can be dangerous in these conditions. I KNOW THIS IS A PERSONAL PREFERENCE AND I AM JUST POSTING MY OPINION! Everyone has to make their own minds up. How and when you ride will effect your preferences. I purchased a windshield off ebay for $24.50 that was supposedly damaged and was pleasantly surprised that it only had very minor scratches on it. This gave me a cheap backup to have in case I did not like the modification to the height of the existing stock shield. I determined for me that cutting off 4" gave me what I was looking for. It turns out that height was perfect and I am happy with the modification I did. (there are posts on how to do this and was very easy to do) When I took it for a long ride I immediately noticed that I had to really concentrate to hear the whine. It appears that the changes in the aerodynamics of the shield also acted as a buffer against the noise. Don't get me wrong the whine is still there but is now more of a normal engine mechanical sound that just seems to get swallowed up in the other ambient noises of air, engine and the pipes. I am amazed that there could be this much change from just lowering the shield. I can now see over the shield and don't experience much difference in the ride on the highway as far as buffeting is concerned. It is not the coccoon that it was but I feel as if I am still getting the benefits of the shield. This combined with the Motorkote has changed the annoyance of this terrific machine into something that I know is there but will be able to accept and deal with. Again, I am not trying to force my opinions on any of you and there is no garantee that any will experience the changes I got from this modification. I do believe that seeing over the shield offers a level of safety in certain conditions (which my New England climate gives me in both the early fall and spring each year) that can not be achieved with the stock height windshield. The bonus of the noise changing was completely unexpected! Just some ideas to throw in the cat box, it will either just lie there, get covered up or watch out the litter will fly! Have a great fall and be safe Dan
  6. I know, this has probably been addressed on one or more of these umpteen thousand threads, but I've been reading posts here for the last 7 hours and figured I'd just come out and ask... There is apparently three(?) methods to measure your windshield. #1. The Clearview way (from dip in front of gas cap vertical). #2. From bottom edge of windshield to top edge. #3. from top edge of chrome strip to top edge of windshield(mounted). Now this has become confusing to me when I read all the posts about personal preferences in windshield heights and retailer descriptions of product. What my 08 RSV came with measures 22" (#1. above), 17" (#3. above). I don't have a measurement for #2. above since the shield is still mounted. So,,,, is this a 'stock' windshield? My intention is to procure a shorter windshield to be able to see over the top when needed. In which case the msrmnts would be; 18" (#1. above) or 11" (#3. above). Of course that's solo, when two-up the line of site thru the shield drops about an inch or so. Am considering the Showchrome 13", is that 13" #1,2,or 3 method?? Where does "4 inches shorter than stock" fit in here? It sure would be nice if there was only ([{ 1 )]} standard used. Can ya help a brother out, huh, can ya? ;-)
  7. I recently bought a new windshield for my 05 RSTD. And I thought I'd pass on the info on where I bought it. He sells on ebay or not. He said that he worked for a windshield manufacturer for years and now he started manufacturing his own windshields. many sizes, two widths, and the price is much less than the other manufacturers. For me, that mattered. But more importantly, the quality is awesome. I have had mine on now for a good 2,000 miles, and I have nothing negative to say about it. All of the holes bolted right up to my hardware and clipped right on the bike. I did clip it on the bike before I tightened up the bolts to get the correct line up. I had cut my stock shield down 6" and wanted a stock shield for cooler weather. I ended up buying one that is 2" shorter than stock, and am very happy with it. I have cleaned it, used plexus on it and it looks like new. In fact, one week after he had sent it, he called me to see how I liked it. At that point I had just taken a 1,000 mile ride. His site is: http://www.7jurock.com Steve
  8. Well...a couple of months ago, the wife decided she was cool with riding her own bike and would be just has happy on the back of the Venture....So, she let me trade her bike in on a V-Max. I'd been eye balling a few here and there and last Fri decided to pull the trigger and picked me up a 2006 Max w/3600 miles on the clock. Picked it up for $8k out the door...which isn't a bad price, but not a good one either....unless you consider the stuff it came with. It already had the engine guards, sport shield, frame braces, and a few other items that I am still finding as I work over the bike (just found that the previous owner installed a K&N air filter, a couple of hours ago). Also has a nice lil airbrush job on the lid that can be ....let's say...distracting, at times Been having a blast with it since, although I still have to get used to the seat position and not having a "real" shield in front. But, dang that thing is quick....Swapped out the grips and added some lighting up front. Half way through swapping the turn signals, as well....got the rears done & the fronts are waiting till this weekend. Previous owner installed some little signals, that while clean looking, don't light up for crap. Also threw a set of pegs on the guards to stretch out a little when cruising down the highway. Anywayz, just thought I'd share:D
  9. Riding in the hills of southern Ohio allowing the engine of hold/reduce speed on declines, exhaust fumes drawn to passenger area. Wife wearing 3/4 helmet with face shield, which undoubtedly accumulated fumes inside shield. Riding with a Clearview XXL windshield with vent open. I noticed some intermittent exhaust fumes, but did not suspect wife would be negatively impacted. Anyone have input to determine root cause and corrective action?
  10. Hello all: I am looking for a windshield for my 2001 RSV. I would prefer one that is near stock height (+ /- an inch or 2 is okay) that is in reasonable condition. A vent would be a plus, but at this point I am not really going to be extraordinarily picky. I am, of course, willing to pay a fair price for what you've got (although I wouldn't argue with a donation either ) So if you have changed windshields and have an extra one collecting dust - please let me know. For those of you that have purchased a clearview shield and took off the plastic before you realized that you probably wanted something else, now is a good chance for you to get the shield that you've been wanting while letting your older one go to a good home! I was hoping to get a new vented clearview but I just cannot quite make that happen at the 200 bucks just yet (not to mention the 4-6 week wait time -- since I am looking to go on a trip in a few weeks) so I was hoping that someone may have something in reasonable shape that they would be willing to part with. Let me know if you have something laying around or whatever. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you in advance!! Rick M.
  11. OK folks, I had mentioned in another thread about a new windshield that I was going to try on my bike. I had heard about this company from Bob Dakin but knew nothing about them. A few days ago I got an email from the owner of the company asking if I would be willing to test their new RSV shield and provide feedback to him and to our members. I told him that I was willing to do so but that he needed to understand that my report would be 100% honest and I would NOT support a product that I didn't believe in. Now it turns out that F4Customs is only about an hour from my house so I took a drive over there and picked up a shield. They offer it in 3 sizes. 14.5", 17.5" (stock height) and 19.5". The 17.5" and the 19.5" are both available in stock width or 4" wider than stock. I went with the 19.5" shield in the 4" wider size. This is about the same height as my Clearview shield. The Clearview shield was also wider than stock but this one is a bit wider yet. Now I want to say here that I was NEVER unhappy with my Clearview shield and have recommended them many times here. It is now about 9 years old and is still in very good shape. I would not have been in the market for a new shield at this time. There are a number of claims that F4 makes about this shield. It is scratch resistant, no optical distortion, they say it is very slick and really sheds water well. You can use Rain X on it and they actually recommend that you clean it with windex and paper towels and you will not scratch it. The RSV shield is new but they have made shields for other bikes and Nascar for some time now. I understand that they are a very popular brand with the Goldwing riders. I have no reason to doubt their claims but it will obviously be a while and many miles before I can fully verify them either. What I can say is that the shield fits well. All the bottom holes are actually holes and not slots as Clearview and the stock shields use. There seems to be substantial material to hold the shield if a screw or two get loose. The holes were all drilled properly and lined up as they should have. It is a bit wider at the bottom than my older Clearview shield. One thing I did notice is that the wider part of the shield at the bottom sweeps back a bit. The Clearview shield was pretty much straight in line with the chrome strip. To the point that you actually had to flex the shield back a bit in order to remove the chrome. This one sweeps back probably an inch. Not saying that is a good thing or a bad thing, just a difference that I wanted to point out. Also the bottom of the wide part of the shield angles up just a bit. Where the Clearview shield is pretty much straight across where the width extends at the bottom ... aligns with the top of the fairing...this one angles up maybe 3/4" or so. Again, not saying that is good or bad but a difference. I THINK I actually like the Clearview better in this one regard but this is something that F4 could probably tweak if it turns out that everybody feels the same way that I do about it. After I put a few miles on it, I may end up liking it this way. We'll see. Anyway, this is my intial report. The shield is well made, fits nicely, secured very well with all holes and no slots. As for it being highly scratch resistant and shedding water so well, only time will tell. They did show me a demo of a shield with a windshield wiper wrapped in steel wool. He said they had run the wiper for over 100 hours with the steel wool scrubbing the shield and it was not scratched at all. It IS a very clear shield and I've noticed no optical distortian at all. That wasn't a problem with my Clearview either but some with the new swept back version of the Clearview have complained just a bit about it. I will report further after I've put some miles on it. If you want to know more, the F4 Custom website is: http://www.f4customs.com/
  12. Hey Guys, I BADLY need some of your wise counsel. I'm the happy owner of a new '09 Venture having just traded off my '07 FJR (Quantum Shift:happy34:). This is my first full boat tourer. For MANY years I've gripped and moaned about windnoise, buffeting, etc. My FEEJER was terrible for that -great bike though... Anyway, you've heard it said "be careful what you wish for". Well I wanted a bike with a quiet ride and good wind protection. Boy, did I ever get it in the Venture. Problem is, on a hot sunny day (96 here in the sun today) I thought I was gonna die from heat exhaustion. I wear a full vented jacket in hot weather, but behind the Venture's shield I got ZIP in the way of airflow. Great when it's cool (last evening) but way to hot today:fiddle:. I badly need additional air flow. It looks like the answer would be a shorter shield, but, how short? I'm 5'11" and am looking through the top 4 inches or so of the existing shield. Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions for HOT weather riding? THANKS in advance!

    Aquapel

Question for those of you in wetter climates; Costco is advertising a four applicator pack for a windshield water beader and repellent called Aquapel. Does any one use this? Any good? Safe on the shield?
  15. I have an xxl clearview shield w/vent 2nd gen. for sale brand new in box. still has the clear film on it. first 175$ plus shipping takes it. John 630-202-9490 Long story but the bottom line is I dont need it. Have the yamaha x wide shield now and its staying right where it is.
  16. When Burgymon rode to work this morning on his scoot, it was 19F. Man, that's breath taking!!! I guess I am going to have to get some leathers and a face shield if it gets much colder!! I bet Eck wimped and drove his truck!!!!
  17. Anyone have one of the 9" shorties that you don't like?? I'd like to have a shorter shield on mine.
  18. I have a Garmin Nuvi with the windshield mount in my truck. Has anyone ever mounted this to the windshield of the RSV. It won't hurt the shield will it?
  19. Anyone have this shield? http://www.f4customs.com/
  20. My wife Debbie and I were on our way to Missouri for a week mc vacation yesterday. We were east of Jay, Ok. about 8 miles. I had just passed two vehicles that were tailgating each other slowing down, speeding up and just plain irritating. I went around them at about 90 miles per hr. faster than ussual and because they speeded up as I was passing them I didn't realize my speed. I had slowed down to about 80 and my windshield broke loose and hit me on the nose and mouth and almost knocked me out. I was able to maintain control until I found a place to pull over and thankfully we are still here to tell about it. After regaining my composure and cleaning the blood We rode to Grove to the emergency rm. long story short no broken nose or facial bones but a deep gash in the cartalege of my nose and a sore cheek bone, broken visor on my helmet and destroyed sunglasses. We stayed the night in a motel in Grove, Ok. and rode back home about 120 miles today without a windshield. I had a clearview xx tall, wide shield with the vent. The shield snapped loose and broke at the two fasteners just below the vent. Ironically the perfect storm because the shield fits in slots on either side and when the shield snapped at the two screws that hold the windshield on it immediately came flying back at me. I think the integrity of the shield strength is compromised due to the vent and the location of the only two screws that hold the windshield in place being just below the vent. If for any reason these two screws fail or the shield snaps at that location the same thing could and would happen to anyone. I am sharing this as a warning to any one with the clearview or any other brand shield with the vent positioned as those are. There isn't much material between the screws and the vent. Also the material used is resistant to scratching, but more prone to chips as I have heard other clearview customers state on this site which leads me to believe that the material used is a harder plastic than the stock shield thus being more brittle and less pliable which could also explain it snapping without warning or apparent damage to the shield before this experience. I have also read threads here on this site of stress cracks apparent in some clearview shields. I also theorize that the clearview shield w/out the vent may be much stronger and this problem may not arise. I loved my clearview shield and it appears to be made of very good quality. The clearview people all seem to be great people. In other words I have nothing against clearview, but I want people on this site to be warned of the possibility of experiencing what I have and we are lucky to be here to tell about it. I am also going to send pics and this same information to clearview to alert them of the potential for the shields failing. The next person may not be as lucky as we were. If there is anyone with similar experiences or have anything to add It could possibly save a life or lives. Of all the things that can possibly go wrong with a motorcycle or other catastrophies while riding I never expected my wind shield to break loose.
  21. Does anyone know of a not so exspensive, winter time, full face helmet, that does not fogg up. I have tried the antifogging stuff, does not work for me. I also tried folding aluminum foil up and sticking under shield to hold open slightly, no good either.I have read a little on here about a helmet that has an extra shield for this ?? The local dealer could not help me, he said he knew of a stick on stuff or something like that ? I know there is got to be loads of fellow riders who are looking for a warm full face that does not fogg up ( so dangerous that I stopped riding until I can do better ). Thanks in advance.
  22. Greetings all! Last Saturday I spent all day with Craig at "Clearview." His main objective was to get to the bottom of your "shield" problem. I can assure you all that Craig has taken this incident very seriously! With my bike as the test sample, (2007 RSV) we removed the parts & windshield. When we removed the chrome piece covering the windshield screws, we found one of the center screws very loose & about to fall out. The stock shield has only one hole & 5 slots. Craig's original design added another hole in the middle & had 4 slots. Craig came up with a new design that eliminated the slots & added more material to better stabilize the "Shield." I think it would be next to impossible to ever loose a "Shield" with Craig's new design. The new design will be incorporated immediately. No old style "Shields" will be shipped is what Craig said. We also looked at ways of improving the shield support particularly the two outside screw locations. This seems to be a Yamaha idea in need of improvement. More later on this issue. Once again, rest assured that Craig took this mishap very seriously! Thanks, DNB
  23. Our venerable leader said, "As for the vent, I will not buy another shield with the Goldwing style vent. They are VERY hard to keep clean as the bugs and grime get between the vent flange and the shield. Plus, mine stop[ped] opening and closing correctly a couple of years ago. I will use the round pop out vents from now on and would just as soon install my own. It is very easy to do." Before I order my Clearview windshield, I would like to know how many of you have vents and like them or do you agree with Freebird? Thanks for taking time giving me feedback. Lynn
  24. Well I installed the new clearview shield tented today I am 5'8" tall I bought the med 3" shorter the stock. I think it may be just a little short but not to bad. I took it out for a ride It did not take long to find out the clearview leans back more then the stock shield The sun hit the gas Cap and bulls eye the reflection hits the shield and where is it on that shied right at eye level so what is next? $250.00 later it will be hard to see and what a distraction. OK pull back into the house tell Teri get me that blue rag over there so I can put over the gas cap bing reflection gone next step gas cap cover ordered over the phone should be here next week. then I will try again. At the end of the day next shield well have no tent and if it is a clearview I will go with the large. The shield does look like it is will made when you order one though make sure of the hight you need. PS don't take off the cover it is shipped with in case you want to send back ask me how I know that, needless to say I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer I should have read the tag on the shield.
  25. Well after 9 weeks my now clearview shield came in today. I bought the Med. 3" shorter then stock. I took it out of the box and it is a bet shorter then I thought it would be. It is hard to tell until I get it installed hope it not to short .Now for my question, there was 2 small pieces of rubber about 3" long could anyone tell me where these go? I think it may be on the short lip that is on each side of the shield but not sure. has anyone installed on on there bike lately? :7_6_3[1]::7_6_3[1]:
