  1. I noticed today that my rear cyclinder on the right side on the exhause pipe looks a little black and blue. Does anyone know what might cause this,to rich carbs out of sync? Maybe we can take care of it at maintance day at Freebirds? Also I would like to install frt and rear brake pads yes??? Thanks Joe
  2. can anyone give me the best way to remove the rear wheel? I have seen lots of different procedures which vary quite significantly thanks Pete:confused24:
  3. I was having rear wheel lockup when braking hard and couldn't figure out why. Then I read an article on the MSF webb site about an instructor that had alot of students in the advanced rider course that had floorboards, had rear wheel lockup. He found the reason why!! They were lifting up their foot and stomping the rear brake. When you do so you are using not only you calf muscle but you thigh and inertia, thats a lot of pressure. His answer is to keep you heel on the floorboards and pivot foot to the brake leaver and brake with you toe or the end of you boot. It works!!! I have been practicing that procedure and it works. Try doing it and you will build up muscle memory and you will do it in an emergency. So far I have not locked up the rear wheel when doing this. Practice, practice, practice!!!! I hope this will help everyone. tew47
  4. When you loose a rear shock will it still hold air pressure?( Mine is) Reason asking I know that when you change oil to NOT fill it over the half way mark on window and I am a slight bit lower than that but I have oil at base of rear shock? Thanks,Tom
  5. Hey all, have had my midnight venture over three weeks and i have a hard time getting rear trunk to shut and latch without putting serious weight into it and even then it takes a couple of times of pushing down to get it latched. took off black plastic latch cover inside trunk and everything seem tight and lined up. wondering if anyone else had this problem and ideas to correct it. oh when i get it latched it does lock as it should and opens fine. thanks Brian D.
  6. Have any of you installed these in the rear? I got these for the front, Now I am wondering if they will fit in the rear without modification. Have you up-graded the rears? what did you use for a speaker? Did you have to modify?
  7. Maybe somone has run across a rear Air Shock for a 1996 Royal Star ? A friend of mine has a 96 and the rear shock is the pitts. Anybody know of a replacement for the stock with an air shock?
  8. A couple of weeks ago I put in a new set of Progressive springs in the front forks and purchased one for the rear shock. Some showed an interest in how the rear spring would affect the ride. Well the new rear spring is on the bike and it makes a huge difference in the ride. The directions from Progressive say that you only need about half as much air on the rear with this new spring. Well, my air compressor doesn't work so even though there is no pressure on the shock it still rides 10 times better than before the spring change. Wish I had done it 10 years ago. I got the front and rear spring from Rick Hafferkamp at Buckeye Precision. He had them in stock at the time. Rick also installed the rear spring for me also at a very reasonable price. If you need parts, or if you are in the Cincinnati area and need work, Rick is the man to see. Very knowledgeable on these bikes and his prices are hard to beat. He can be reached here: http://www.buckeyeperformance.com/ Dick :)
  9. Does anyone know how to get to the rear Remote Control Unit. My PTT button fell off and I got my hand on a new Remote Control Unit. Now I need to install it. I know the trunk has to be removed to get close to it.
  10. My insurance company has made me a settlement offer on my wrecked '03 RSV. I also have the option of buying the bike back. The only things that are salvageable are the engine, (still runs good) seats, trunk, (has two repairable cracks) saddle bags, (need to be painted) rear fender and all the parts on the rear 1/2 of the bike. The bag rails are usable but would need to be re-chromed which would cost more than buying new ones. They could by painted I suppose. My question is what is the market for these parts and how much money are they worth? I know the trunk and saddle bags would probably sell pretty fast but what about the engine? I would probably keep the extra wheels but the front one would have to be checked really well for damage.
  11. I discovered the other day that my left side blinkers weren't blinking, Checked the bulbs front and back which were good. Then discovered that lead (black & Brown) to left rear blinker had been pinched and shorted. I repaired the lead, checked and replaced fuses as needed. Now niether side blinks and no rear lights other then tail light. Front running lights are on but neither blinks, Nor does the blinker indicators on the dash. The hazard switch doesn't seem to do any thing. But it reads ok when doing pin out test. I thought that since I've been caught in several rides lately in the rain that moisture and/or corrosion might be a factor. :lightbulb:oh yea!. Wasn't that the problem that someone else was having on the North Ga 2nd Annual M&E that was covered in detail on that thread last week? :scratchchin:The problem did show up after I trusted 86ers weather report for that ride. Note to self: Go back and reread that thread. I Have taken turn signal switch apart, cleaned and reassembled. I believe I have narrowed it down to the signal flasher relay and/or Canceling unit but am not sure exactly which device is which. Tracing out color coded wiring it appears to me that both devices are combined together within the same little Black box. Is that possible?
  12. Denise and I took off for a ride this afternoon, got 6-8 miles from home, rolled up to a stop sign, and the bike felt squirrely to me. I wondered about tire going flat until I tried to pull away, and the bike gave a definite bump/lurch. Pulled over and sure enough, rear tire very soft. Called in my step-dad with an air tank, and it blew out near as fast as we blew it in. Found a piece of metal shoved in the face, cutting a good slice in it. So, I need a new rear. We bought the bike late last fall with 900 miles on it, up to about 2500 now on the original Bridgestones. Based on all the Avon lovers on this site, I was going to order an Avon for the rear, but my question is, can I leave the Bridgestone on the front?? Will this give any handling concerns, or can I run it until it needs changing?? Thanks for the advice. Larry
  13. several months ago, someone posted a link to a place that had replacements lenses for the accessory rear lighting. These are the small oblong red lenses that go in the chrome rear bumper and side panels under the saddlebags on a 1st. gen. I somehow have managed to lose this link. If anyone knows of what I am talking about and has that info, it would be greatly appreciated if you could repost it. Don H.
  14. I can't get my XVZ1200 (1984 Venture Royal) running yet, I bought a non runner. I've taken the carbs out to give them a good clean, it looks like two of the cylinders aren't getting any petrol at all, they were totally dry. After trying to start the bike up I checked all the spark plugs again for a spark and only the front two are sparking, the two rear ones look like they aren't sparking at all, not even a weak spark. I've also bought another set of coils so I decided to change the two rear coils, and still no spark?
  15. I have been having problems with my 06 Midnight Venture. Specifically one of the cyclinders ie; As I sit on the bike it is the rear cylinder on my LEFT. First it was gas-fouling plugs on this cylinder....Ran 3 cans of SeaFoam through 2 tanks of gas and the carb-float problem seems to be gone now. NOW....Today I went for a spin that was roughly 100 miles at speeds from 50-70mph. When I got home I checked all the exhaust headers as they come out of the cylinders. The header coming from that LEFT REAR CYLINDER was warm to the touch whereas the others were very HOT. Performance-wise the bike was fairly decent but I did notice a slight popping and at times it seemed sluggish on the throttle with small periods of hesitancy when I rolled on the throttle...... and even tried holding the throttle steady at 50mph in 3rd gear. Any ideas as to what I should do from this point? I'm thinking about re-synching the carbs....... and doing it step-by-step as provided by Freebird here in the Tech Section. Also putting in 4 new plugs as well with the synch job. Note: Sorry for such a long post but I want to get as much info out in order to help you guys with the trouble-shooting advice. Regards............Boomer
  16. I recently purchased an 83 Venture, which has an after-market cruise control installed, and the only info I have about it is its name: Markland. I have tried to find any info I can about the company, but so far I haven't had any luck online. I was wondering if anyone has heard of Markland cruise control systems, or where I may locate a wiring diagram, or just a website/phone number. This system uses magnets attached to the rear brake rotor, with a sensor mounted on the rear caliper bracket. the control on the handlebars says MARKLAND across the top, and has 3 buttons, SET, RES, and ^OFF. I am really hoping it's just a loose wire, or a bad vacuum line, but before I start I wanted to get more familiar with how it is installed. Any help is really appreciated!
  17. Guess I should have taken some pics, but I'll try to describe what I saw. I had the gas tank off... replacing the handlebars and cables. There is an air box on each side on top of the carbs with a piece between the two with some foam between the pieces. The left side foam was oily with more oil toward the rear carb. I also noticed more oily dirt on the rear of the left box. I took the left side off to look inside. Both front and rear carbs looked the same. The rear might have had a little oily feel but if it did, it was not much. The box was more oily to the rear. I didn't see any oil up front, coming from the filter boxes. I keep my oil level about half-way up the site glass. My gas mileage has never been very good and has been worse the last few months. There are three vent tubes underneath on the left near where the center stand is mounted. Two are pretty heavy with oily dirt. One was venting a lot of gas fumes and an occasional drop of gas. Any guesses? I sure don't won't to put it in the shop.
  18. HI FOLKS... Just received our new YAMAHA official Head sets. Both are installed into our helmets. BOTH work from the rider's jack. When we plug in to the back passanger jack....neither work. So it's somewhere in the wiring to the jack. . What do I do and where do I start my search to fix the rear set??? Thanks to anyone who can help. It looks to me that the trunk has to be removed to get to the wiring. Remove both seats also???? Tom Schoener
  19. Hi Folks, I just recently purchased a beautiful 88 White VR with 44K on heer and I just found out the rear shock does not hold air. It pumps up then bleeds off right away as she loweers herself. My question is ; What normally goes south, the air line to the shock, fittings, or the shock itself? Thanks in advance, Kim
  20. So…after the Vogel meet I spent a day cruising around with Todd (86er) which culminated in a luxurious shower and good night’s rest at his motorcycle restoration emporium near Atlanta. (WOW! Thanks 86er.) I was thinking about taking the Blue Ridge home but got worried about how quickly my rear tire was being used up…that usually happens when Todd and I get together. I decided to call MR MOTORCYCLE in Asheville NC to see if they had my size, my brand and the time to put one on if I needed it when I got there. They had all of the above. I got there a few hours later, I checked out the rapidly disappearing wear bars on my tire and decided to pursue a tire purchase and installation. First off, they couldn’t find the tire, any tire, spent 30 minutes looking, didn’t have any other brand my size in stock. In conversation with the guy behind the counter I referred him to their big showroom sign which read #1 motorcycle tire dealer in the Carolinas. I laughed and jokingly wondered about the truth of the sign’s contents. He couldn’t suggest any other place to look for tires, he couldn’t give me the name of the next biggest city going north, and he kept saying “I don’t know” to those kinds of questions. He did give me options for ordering a tire…it’d be in house the next day and I’d be on the road the day after if I wanted them to install it. While considering this I asked for a quote on installation. He said 1.5 hours! I was shocked. I discussed this quote with him explaining that I couldn’t see it taking any Yamaha dealer that long if I could take the tire off and on in 30 minutes myself if I had access to a lift. He referred me to the service dept. where I continued to exclaim how outrageous this time was for changing a back tire. Some of the conversation with the service manager centered around how much of a pain it is to change a tire on my bike, and I responded with it only being one muffler which I’d take off for him! He held his ground, said he'd be happy to help me on my way if indeed I did need a tire. (huff)Finally, I came to the conclusion that my trip up the Blue Ridge wasn’t meant to be. I decided to hobble home slowly on the I75 checking my tire at every gas stop. On my way back I picked up some rear tires I had dropped shipped earlier in Michigan…that was after spending 6 hours trying to get around the Ohio flood disaster in Findley (but that is another story). I arrived home with some glum resignation that my summer sojourns were at an end. I put on a new rear tire the next day…yup, my Yamaha dealer charged 30 minutes labour!! After sitting around the place for a day (cleaning up the bike, doing an oil change) and connecting with some other Kitchener ventureriders who complained it was too cold to ride any more this season(!!), I decided to do the Blue Ridge!…I reasoned that I still had vacation time and the weather was nice so why not? Or was it really the ill reasoning that results from camping a week with LaPryor? So back down to North Carolina I cruised. Got to Cherokee in one day; started out on the parkway the next day. Half way through the day I jumped off the parkway to get gas, eat and mail a post card. Walking out of the post office I looked up the street and there was MR MOTORCYCLE! I really had no idea I was in the very same town and street that I was in several days earlier because I had approached it from a different route. Well, I decided right then to have a chat with the dealer’s manager. I introduced myself as an avid motorcyclist and a Venture rider who blogs about their travel experiences; I told him that I was also a business teacher and always like to give feedback to proprietors when the usual happens; and I asked him if he’d be interested in hearing my story. He was and I explained the whole thing. He was first amazed that I’d travel back and forth to Canada within a week, then he was concerned about what I’d blog about MR MOTORCYCLE on the venturerider’s website and hoped I "wouldn't say anything bad about them", and finally, he said he could do nothing but apologize to me for my experience and then added the proviso that he had little to do with what happens in the service dept. I thanked him for his time and went on my way enjoying a great ride up to the top of the Shenandoah NP. So my question remains…CAN CANADIANS CHANGE A REAR TIRE THREE TIMES FASTER THAN AMERICANS CAN?!
  21. Bad news from the local mechanic. He said that the rear shock is gone and it is dangerous to ride. Good man, I think, cause he said it would be expensive if I bought it direct from Yamaha and suggested somewhere like ebay. So, I am looking for comments, advice and probably somewhere to buy a rear shock. Is it a bad idea to buy a used shock? My 89 only has 33K miles. Maybe its not the miles but the age. Iowa Guy Tim Lantz
  22. Doing the amp for cassette mod and ran into something I'd rather avoid. My right rear speaker wires come out of the pod so I can see the color for them to split up at the radio. However, the left rear speaker pod has 4 wires going into it. Apparently when I swapped speakers I connected them inside the pod. I don't know what color is (+)/(-) or for that matter what two of the four is the speaker. Anyone have a diagram that tells? Haven't found it so far. Thanks.
  23. Think I found one for sale and was wondering if a 1998 will work with my 85 venture? I read that I will need the vmax driveshaft and the dust cover, anything else I should look for/prepare for?
  24. I think I may have a hole in one of the pipes on the rear header so I need to take it out to take a look. What's the easiest way to remove it? I have removed the collector but didn't want to start needlessly disassembling the top half of the bike before checking to see if someone found an easy way to get it out. I have checked the manual and the site but haven't ran across anything yet. Thanks for the help.
  25. Here are some pics of an RSV muffler that I opened up. If you look closely at the rear section you will see tha drilling holes in the rear cone does nothing if you don't also drill the second plate. I can post more pics if anyone wants a specific view. AL
