  1. Seems like I remember a while back someone posting some .GPX files. Were those map updates that would work in a Nuvi? I just bought a used Nuvi 255 off Fleabay. I'm not sure how up to date the map file is.
  2. Hi All, I'm sorta new and was wondering how you get the neat little map thingy with your states on it on your profile? Ron:smash2:
  3. Got this e-mail today. My question is what was the price before. $90 for lifetime updates sounds pretty cheap to me, but want to compare to what it was before. Wouldn't sound like such a great deal is say it was $100 before. Now if it was like $250 that's a good savings. We've lowered the price for map updates. Now it costs less to keep your maps updated. This is great news, because streets, highways, and points of interest are constantly changing. So now when you take advantage of our quarterly map updates it costs less to make sure you have access to the most current map data. It’s very easy to do, and you have two great update options from which to choose nüMaps Lifetime™ This one-time purchase, now as low as $89.99, lets you download the most up-to-date map information available...for the lifetime of your Garmin device. No monthly fees, no maintenance costs. You can update every time a quarterly map update is released and not pay again.
  4. Just curious about county road 257(I think). Leaves right at the entrance to little river canyon mouth park. has a sign that states "23 miles to Hwy 35. Not suitable for trailers, rv, semis," blah, blah, blah. What about motorcycles? looks blacktop and like it would be a blast by looking at the map.
  5. At last some time to go for a real ride and see how well the old girl runs. No map and just road signs to guide the way. OK, OK well I forgot the map, but, the other way I said it sounds way more tough!! I started out and headed ot to Calibogie from Ottawa then after a few back roads I went through Algonquin park to Huntsville. Then to North Bay for a coffee and supper. From there I went back to Ottawa via hwy 17. About 1000KM in a day. I just kept pushing myself. The old girl handled everything with power to spare. Treat the bike well and I think she will be nice to me for years. Actually had to watch the speed because the ride was so smooth. The night driving was a bit hard on me but some more lights should help. Next on the list is a camper so I can really do some driving and spend some nights in interesting areas. Mind you it's a small list with out much cash. I want to head out sometime and see the desert. Just thought I would share!!
  6. I've again, been thinking about a m/c trip to Alaska. I figured on riding to Alaska, then shipping the bike back. - Is this cheating? I CAN take 4 weeks off work, but would rather take 3. Do you think a person could travel from Omaha to Washington, then up the coast to Alaska in 3 weeks? I haven't looked at a map yet to figure out the path. I have a cousin in N.E. Washington that I would like to stop and see for a day on the way up. craigr
  7. Where can I find an outlined US/States map similar to the ones I've seen on many posts here. I'd like to color in the states I've ridden and add to my sig. Thanks
  8. We're leaving Sunday for a 2 week ride through MO, AR, OK, TX, NM, CO, WY, SD, IA, IL, IN, & KY. I'll be travelling with 4 other bikes so if you see a group of bikes with a Venture, Tour Deluxe, Gold Wing, and 2 Harleys go by give a wave or shout out to us. I'll be carrying a SPOT unit so if you care you can follow our progress at http://spotwalla.com/tripViewer.php?id=6473 It should map a new point on the map every 10 to 20 minutes. Dennis
  9. We all notice other RSVs on the road and are wondering, "Hey, is he/she part of venturerider?" Venture sighting has to be one of the MOST copied threads. I notice the map is no longer functioning, so my question/request is to pinpoint sightings on a map with time and date and year and colour. Others have agreed it would be cool. http://venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=48689&highlight=venture+sighting One suggestion I had was to have a public map in google maps where the members of the site have the password so they could go in and pinpoint the location and then fill in the data into the pinpoint label. If some other way was better, but would require some work in order to do this, I would GLADLY offer my time and services. It would be an honour to help out the site and its members. Since I'm the one asking it only seems fair I should do the work. Thanks Steve Hoedt aka dunvilsteev
  10. Leaving our house at 6:00am tomorrow morning. Heading for New England, a nine day trip, going to fill out some states on my map and see some areas we haven't seen before. I'll try to update as we go as long as I can get online.
  11. Ok I installed a TomTom Rider 2 on my 2nd gen a couple of weeks ago. Here is a report on my impressions so far. Again my personal opinions. First The Good; It is easy to install. The Ram Mount and cradle work pretty well. The unit snaps in and out of the cradle easily and feels solid. The wiring is very simple. I just soldered the ends to the back of the accessory plug behind the fairing. The unit turns on automatically with the key but I have to power it off. Satellite locks are very quick. Usually under 40 seconds. Rerouting is also very quick. This is usually good but sometimes it can be a problem which I will bring up later. The thing is impervious to rain. Even the cover for the usb jack has a solid rubber seal around it. The light gray color does not absorb as much heat from the sun as black does. It may be minor but since heat is a killer of electronics I like this small detail. It even has a little built in visor, nice touch. The touch screen works well even with gloves. The Bad; The screen washes out easily. It doesn't have to be in really bright sunlight either. While it offers several screen color options none work well in sunlight. It is hard to follow a map you can't see. The automatic zoom is also a real problem. There is no manual zoom or pan functions while moving. That is not to bad when navigating a predetermined route but when you just want to use the map you can't even see two blocks away. When you are allowed to zoom out it is only temporary and the map returns to it's automatic setting after a few seconds. This makes it almost impossible to find alternate routes with the gps map, very frustrating. The use of the menu is also limited to four buttons when moving. It is called a Safety Driving Menu. You can't make outgoing calls with the Blue Tooth while moving either. So you are forced to stop to scan the map or make changes etc. This creates some new problems. When you pull off the road say into a parking lot (not that a motorcycle would ever be driven off the road or heaven forbid into a parking lot) the gps will assign your position and direction to a nearby street and quickly recalculate your route from that artificial point. Frequently, as in every time you pull off the road, sending you off in the wrong direction. Who ever thought of this feature should be hung. I understand it is to make sure the gps shows you on a road when you are navigating but it creates more problems than it solves. And sometimes you are not actually on a road. There is no internal speaker and no speaker connection. So it is their Blue Tooth helmet speakers or nothing. As far as I know it will not work with any other helmet speakers or Blue Tooth set up. Like most others today their user guide sucks. I don't take my computer along on the bike so the CD is useless on the road. I would take a good user manual along. Like so many others the claim is to be environmentally friendly and save paper. But they included a useless user guide with little information in half a dozen different languages. Then tell me to print my own from the CD. A pet peeve of mine. When navigating the maps miss the second largest freeway interchange in the state keeping you on the wrong side of the freeway until you are two blocks past the exit. Then it wants to turn you around and do the same thing going the other way. Would Like to Haves; A screen that doesn't wash out so easily. An automatic zoom override that stays where I put it. The ability to pan a map. A better edit function for the favorites including a line for notes and the ability to change the address. Larger street names. I don't have a lot of time to squint at the map while I am riding. A speaker connection so I could plug it into the bikes auxiliary jack. A map scale indicator. Get rid of the automatic street assignment. Summary; For a motorcycle gps it sure isn't very rider friendly. It is better than no gps, but not by much. I will not buy another TomTom, Rider or Car navigator. Mike
  12. Hey gang! I'm shopping for a new GPS- leaning toward the 550, but don't like that the price is higher than the model number! Right now I have a 360 (garmin car GPS) and it does work OK for me. Here's the question- What are the differences between units? I thought it would be nice to compile a list on the following issues for GPS: 1- Buddy Rich compatible?? (Y/N) does it allow you to use bike intercom system with BR cable if there's bluetooth? (question 6) yes/no 2- MP3? - (Y/N) plays mp3 files so you don't have to hook up your ipod? yes/no 3- XM/Serius/whatever (Y/N/A) - I don't wanna pay for radio, but lots of people love it!! yes/no/adapter required 4- Map updates - F/P Free or paid? 5- import online map routes? (y/n/3) yes, no, 3rd party product needed... Can it get routes off of gmaps, mapquest, downloaded into the unit so you can plan the trip before you go? 6- Bluetooth? (A/D/N) Answers only, dials also (integrated address book), or NO bluetooth for phone connections when riding... 7- Waterproof? (Y,B) Yes, or requires baggie!!! :-) Not sure what other features are needed... I really am most interested in 1, 2, and 5,6... 4 would be nice if they were free!!! Don't care much about 3. Any other important features Missing?
  13. Where do I find the US map you all have on your profile? I would like to mark the states I have ridden in as well. Thanks JM:bagpipes-emoticon:
  14. Have to take my daughter to Detroit Sat. morning. Viewing a thing about a Veterinary grad. college that is in St. Kits (?) She has been accepted at this one and is waiting on a couple more. Better than the 4 wait lists she was put on last year. I have map quested this place and have a gps, but I was wondering is it is in a decent area, etc. Has anyone heard of this place. Thanks in advance. The Westin Book Cadillac Detroit 1114 Washington Blvd. Detroit, MI.
  15. http://jimspages.com/States.htm Map of USA Puzzle.. THIS IS NEAT Wonder how a high school senior would do on this one? See how you do in placing the states of the United States Of America .. All you do is look at the top of the page and drag'n'drop the state to where it belongs. Smart map, varies the order of the states' placement with each new try! It isn't easy mostly because placing a state in the precise location when it as yet has no boundaries in place is a bit tricky! No half credit for close but over a tad.... 86% Score 20 mile average error 263 seconds time Gary
  16. I want to add the Map of the USA profile and color out the states I've traveled to my profile. Also, how do I create a graphic or photo avatar? Thanks for your help. Sunrayman:sun:
  17. I searched 'how to' and frankly couldn't make it work after several tries. I can add the Canada map, the USA map, but not both. You're dealing with a pilot here so help has to be real simple. My thanks in advance. Jdix
  18. cant get the map and the weather to stay in signature Thanks Ralph
  19. Has anyone ridden Hwy 60 called Morgantown Hwy from Dahlonega to Blue Ridge? I am headed up to Blue Ridge Thursday and usually go to Blairsville and take the Zell Miller Mountain Parkway to Blue Ridge. Looking at the map I thought this time I might take Hwy 60 and wondered if anyone had any experience on it?
  20. I am planning my 8 day September ride from Calgary to Las Vegas. I was playing with different map tools that are available on the web. I stumbled across the Harley Davidson Rider Planner tool. http://www.harley-davidson.com/wcm/Content/Pages/Ride_Planner/Ride_Planner.jsp?locale=en_US I have been using it to map out my trip and have found it to be very useful. You need to create a profile if you want to save your plans. They will even let you create a profile if you ride something other than a Harley.
  21. I have a Garmin GPS that it suddenly seems to take a loong time to find the Satellites. - Maybe 5 or 10 minutes. My wife couldn't get it to locate ANY while she was in Dallas. She finally gave up and got the paper map out. Recently, while on a 2-week trip I carried the GPS in the leather bag on my windshield. Could the vibrations have damaged it? craigr
  22. We're about to head off on another day ride here in MN. 300 miles of roads north of the Twin Cities. We'll be doing a lap around Lake Mille Lacs up in the Brainerd area. Google Map of the route. Today's weather is sunny and 59 degrees and they claim it could get up into the lower 70's. PERFECT riding weather!!!
