  1. The local Harley dealer puts on rider schools once a month. They call it the Riders Edge. The use the MSF books so it can't be half bad. Since my kid (17) is working on trying to get his motorcycle endorsement, we thought it would be a good idea for him to get some training to help make him a safer rider. I figure it could not hurt me so I signed up to go with him. Yesterday was the first class. Thrusday and Friday 5 PM to 8:30...Saturday 8 AM to 6:30 Sunday 8AM till 4 PM. Maximim 6 to a class. We have 3 ladies and 3 guys including my son and me. The Ladies - 2 has never sat on a bike. One has a bike but does not know how to ride it yet. The other guy is military and required to take this course to ride on base. They told us Harley will pay us $50 to go to the class..."Any of you own a Harley?"..none of us had a Harley..."oh thats too bad" they said with enfaces. First class. (my impression) Sales pitch. We get there at 5 PM...have introductions and then a dealership tour. They show us the Motor Clothes each line of everthing they have. Boots, helmet, t shirts, jackets pants, rain gear huggies, Coffee cups and ceiling fans. We have to look at 10 different jackets pointing out the features of each. Pading here, zippers here, this type of collar and this type of collar. You get the idea. Then we move to parts...they show us all the different chrome they have and the lines of chrome you can use, performance parts and OE parts. Sales...show us all the families and models of the bikes Harley offers if they did not have them all the showed us pictures of them...talk about financing, warranties, and adding accessories during the sale and financing it all. Went around to the Service department. Talked about scheduling appointments and how long it takes to get your bike serviced...that all they do...how they handle warranty work. "Normal guy cannot do the maintenace on these bikes" All the time the prices was over the guys head what it cost to do 1000 and 5000 mile service...400 and how much? (My God ) with small print...oil and supplies extra. Then we got into the class...the real reason we were there. It went pretty good...we covered some good stuff. 2nd night tonight and they told us we were gonna get to try on all the motor clothes tonight. I just hope I can keep my composure...I do not want any of that stuff with HD on it that cost $100 more just because it has HD on it. Some of that stuff...I would not wear to a halloween party...even if it has skulls on it. Come on...we are paying $300 a head for this school...they do provide the bikes for training (buel) All for them to try to get a sale out of the deal and working very hard I might add. It is not like I hate Harleys or nothing...just do not see paying more money for a name on an item... Most of that same stuff is at the Yamaha dealer $100 less without the HD on it. Harley is a good bike as far as I know. They have some beautiful bikes but I learned the you are not finished paying for it when you purchase it. Maintenace seems very costly after taking that tour. To me you look kind funny riding a RSV with a jacket on that has Harley across the back and front in 4 inch letters. It is just me or WHAT?
  2. Not too long ago, I became affected by some sort of a dumb bug and thought I'd rather ride a Harley. So, I sold my 88 VR and added lots of dollars to that and bought a really nice Ultra Classic. After spending several thousand bucks in chrome and other goodies, I just couldn't forget my sweet 88 that I had darn near brought it back to a pristine conditiion both in appearance and performance. I sure do miss riding and owning a first edition. I even test rode a couple second editions and found their appearance to be too much like a harley wantabe (not in performance nor reliability) but looks was enough to turn me off. So, in a couple of hours I am heading out to pick up an 86 Venture Royale that has just been de-moth balled after 13 years in storage and has less than 25k original miles. Has had all the fluids changed, new battery, new tires, carbs gone through and according to the seller, runs and looks like the day it was made. All electronics work and the pics are awesome. If everything the owner is telling me is right on, I hope to come back with a replacement for my lost baby, where ever she is now. I will never be disloyal again. I AM ALMOST BACK. LOOK OUT. More to follow.:173:
  3. Not to insult anyone here, I know there are some harley owners that are hog members that are members here too. Has anyone had trouble with Hog members, I have a few friends that are Hog members, but most seem to treat anybody that rides anything other than a harley like dirt. Or is it just me. Gregg
  4. I received this email yesterday from one of our MBA students: Hey Courtney, The word on the street is that you have a Harley Davidson For our brand management class, my group is working on a brand valuation of HOG, and we need to collect market research in the form of a quick 5 minute survey. However, we're having a tough time finding current Harley owners to fill out the survey. Is there any chance you'd be willing to fill it out? Also, would you mind passing it along to anyone you know that might be willing to fill it out, too? Again, it takes about 5 minutes, is completely anonymous, and the results are purely being used to help us answer research questions about perceptions of the Harley brand. Here's the link, http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=AAYCAvIlY9PHIgU3pcqbEg_3d_3d if you're too busy or not interested, not a problem! Best, Abby Mills Abby Mills Tippie School of Management MBA Candidate 2009 I told her I'd help get the word out. (and I explained that I have a YAMAHA!) They would appreciate any responses they get. Thanks! --Courtney
  5. The National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Fund is holding a raffle for a new Harley if interested. I'd never buy a Harley but this is a sweet bike. http://nleomf.org/Harley09/
  6. I was driving pass the local ice joint ,no I didn't stop, anyway there was a Harley sitting out front with a strange paint job for a Harley. What I mean to say is it was not a Harley original BUT it had a first gen truck on it, painted to match of course. I must say it sure made that Harley look good. Gives a new meaning for "Harley look-a-like":big-grin-emoticon: BOO
  7. Heres why I dont think a 3rd Gen will look like a Harley. http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/StockInvestingTrading/is-harley-davidson-over-the-hill.aspx#pageTopAnchor
  8. Hi Folks, I have a real problem. My husband is a Harley guy. He never wanted me to buy my VStar from the beginning. Now because he hangs out with his Harley friends he wants me to get rid of my VStar which I really love. He wants me to get a Sportster, which I really do not care for. I do not think this is fair to me, when I love my VStar. Any suggestions would be appreciated. highwaypeg:crying:
  9. Im looking for anyone who have some Harley Davidson faded glory boots what is is comfort level
  10. This grizzly was hit by a Harley on Lolo Pass. This is the pass between Lolo , MT and Kooskia , ID . .Look at the claws on that sucker! the biker made it thru three days in the hospital! The hog's a wreck! lesson learned : Don't go Bear Hunting with a Harley, they don't last but one bear !!!!!!!!!!
  11. Did anyone else catch the news about Warren Buffet loaning..investing? 600 big ones to Harley at 15% interest. Sounds like loan sharking to me?....
  12. Folks, it has come time for me to simplify my life. I have too much going on to continue trying to run a site that I simply have no interest in. So, this website is for sale! NO...not VentureRider.org I said THIS website. That would be: http://www.touringhogs.com I started it when I was seriously considering buying a Harley but as you know, I never did that and there is a good chance that I never will. Therefore, I have just let the TouringHogs site just sit then and stagnate. I honestly believe that it has a lot of potential if somebody would put the time into it that I have put into VentureRider.org. So, if you know any Harley riders and/or businesses that might be interested, I'll be entertaining offers over the next 3 or 4 weeks.

  16. Well I took the 2009 Streetglide for a ride and put just about 400 miles on it. 326 solo and 46 with the wife. After all the riding I do believe that the Streetglide is what I am looking for so the Venture has been placed in the classifieds. I did want to share my thoughts in case anyone is interested. I'll start by saying I'm 6' and 205 pounds with long legs and long arms. My wife is 5'6 and about 150 pounds so that should give you a comparison as to how we fit both bikes. I will start with my opinion on looks. I just think that the Streetglide is a much better looking bike than the Venture. Probably because it's sportier looking but also I prefer straight boxy lines which lends itself better to the Harley than the Venture. I was surprised just how close the overall comparison was in many other aspects so I'll just hit the more drastic ones. The two things that were the furthest apart were power, which the Venture has more of and pulls harder, and weight/balance where the Harley is far superior, especially at low speeds. Holding any highway speed without using cruise control on the Harley is something you constantly need to adjust. I've gotten used to finding a speed and basically just holding my grip on the RSV and it riding down the road at that speed. Not so on the streetglide. There were constant modifications needed to hold 75 mph and up hill at speed you could really feel the power difference. just the opposite at low speed. I could flick the streetglide around like it was the Warrior without a care. Cornered great, I've been told due to the new frame in 2009, and handled any twisty I could find. Almost shocking compared to the last Harley I rode. I will mention that the streetglides brakes weren't exactly confidence inspiring but I think in part that was due to being a rental. There was a bit of pulsation that others I have spoken to say is not normal on their bikes and this one faded quickly. I know some here don't like the brakes on the RSV but I do. have never run into a problem with them and have complete confidence in mine. The short windshield did not keep the wind out of my face but it did keep the pressure from hitting me in the chest. On my Warrior at highway speeds it always feels like I'm hanging on due to the wind pressure hitting me in the chest. The wide fairing on the streetglide blocks that and I get buffeting at the top of my helmet. Not too awful bad but it's there. The plus side is due to the sitting arrangement my wife believes that she gets bounced around a lot less by the wind on the streetglide. However she isn't exactly pleased with how far she needs to spread her knees to sit on the bike. She believes she can get used to it but it is better on the RSV. The other thing that saddens me is the stereo situation. Yamaha is a premier sound system company. Why don't they share a little of the quality with the motorcycle division. The two speaker system on the Harley sounds so much better than the 4 on the RSV that it is noticeable. Also there is no provision for intercom on the streetglide. Wife hates that fact but I'm still undecided. :-) There is a little less leg room for me but the pull to the bars was about right so I feel once I put a set of highway bars on I'll be good. All in all the streetglide will blend the attributes I am looking for between my Warrior and Venture. It won't be as good a tourer as the Venture, but I can't really think of anything that is, or as sporty as the Warrior but it will work. And the bottom line is what someone else here pointed out. Life is short. If you want something and can find a way to buy it then do it. Although I do not feel that the Harley is worth that much more than the Venture, if I want it that's what I have to pay.
  17. I've been experimenting with the Harley Davidson site ride planner which can be found at this link. http://www.harley-davidson.com/wcm/Content/Pages/Ride_Planner/Ride_Planner.jsp?locale=en_US I think it is very good. I find it easier to build a route in the HD planner than Mapsource. Once you have the Garmin communicator installed you can have the planner automatically find your Garmin GPS and transfer the route to the unit. It may work with other GPS brands but Garmin is the only one I have tried. Give it a try. I like it. Dennis
  18. Well gang, especially my fellow Texas Stampeders, I tried talking myself out of it but couldn't resist any longer. I have sold my 88 Venture Royale, my baby, and have taken on a more classic ride. This afternoon I will be the proud owner of an 03 Harley Davidson FLTHCUI Ultra Classic Electra Glide. At first, I wanted to keep the VR as well as the Harley but I have limited room in my three car garage for all my other vehicles and just couldn't manage two large sleds in it. I thought about throwing out one of the cages, and even considered selling my motorhome so I could park one or two of the cars under that cover, but would rather keep the rv and the other stuff in the garage. Bottom-line the VR will be gone this afternoon and in its place will be my new-to-me FLTHCUI. OMG still can't believe I am doing this. I have built this VR almost from the ground up and I will surely miss her. She has been very, very good to me, carried me thousands of trouble-free miles. I maintained her like she was born of my loins. I will welcome my new HD and I am sure she will become just as important part of me as my VR was. I hope that being a HD owner I am still welcome here in this forum. I have made some very fine friends while being a member of this forum. I would like to continue participating in various runs like next years Texas Stampede. Hope all will continue to welcome me and my new-to-me loud classy ride. God, why do I feel so bad? I am almost in tears.
  19. Just kidding! I'm not crackin on Harley. Did any of you catch the program on Speed this past week that showed a Harley concept bike from years past. It was a v4, watercooled and had snorkles that looked alot like what we find now on the Vmax. It was called project Nova. Not bad lookin as a starting point. Per the article, they had plans for a v6 as well. OH well! There's an article on it: http://thekneeslider.com/archives/2007/04/06/harley-davidson-v4-nova/ Shame they didn't proceed with it. I had no idea they had even toyed with idea of a watercooled v4, but then I never paid much attention to Harleys. Hmmmmm! Surprise, surprise...learn something new every day. I must admit, I am duly impressed.

  21. Another interesting article on msn today. Last year there was an msn article about harley's stock dropping from $70.00 per share to $59.00 per share. It is now in the $13.00 range and is expected to drop below $10.00 by Dec 19. The article says harley sold bikes to buyers who couldn't afford it with no money down. They now are having trouble getting money to finance bikes. I wonder how the metric bikes are doing?
  22. Has anyone modified or replaced these wind deflectors on the bottom edge of the 2nd gen fairing with adjustable ones similar to a Harley Ultra and if so, do you have instructions/pics, etc?
  23. Ok guys saw the new tri-gluide today and I kinda like it as an option for the better half. Was told 38000.00 ca for the basic bike. So what do you think, is there a better way to go such as the Honda trikes. To be honest I,m kinda leary about Harley as I had an Ultra Classic in the spring and I took it back after 1400 kms and two oil pump failures. My 2008 Venture is still gonna be my main ride.
  24. Took advantage of a gorgeous day in NH. No traffic, peak fall colors, peaceful. I started out for a short ride, but the smooth ride on my RSV just kept me going and I had soon put on 150 miles. Last Sunday, I had rented an '08 Harley Electraglide Ultra to see what all the hype was about. Nice ride once you get past the "Parkinson" shaking at idle, but not good enough to convince me that it's worth 23 big ones. I parked the Harley next to my RSV and had a good laugh. The dash on the Harley was cheap vinyl compared to the retro look of the RSV. I also like the beautiful curves of the RSV body versus the boxiness of the Harley. And my wife didn't appreciate the lack of passenger room and the cramped leg room on the Harley. I have to admit that I liked the sixth gear on the Harley, but still I can't justify the price difference between the two bikes. So, I went ahead and ordered a set of roadhouse mufflers to get the sound I want on the bike that I love, my RSV. Hope the weather holds up for a while so I can enjoy the new mufflers before the beast has to go into hibernation for the winter. Wishing you all beautiful autumn ventures!
  25. Don't know if this has been posted already or not (did a quick search with no results). Looks like Harley is taking a step ahead of other manufacturers and making a factory-backed trike. See it here. It's about time. I'm actually surprised Harley was the first to make this move.
