  1. Columbo

    Tires

I was talking with someone about my 2005 RSV which I think is top heavy, (love the bike)and they told me that if I was to change the front tire to a smaller size it would handle better. Can someone give me some info on this subject. Thanks !
  2. http://s512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/Dogman_ca/ I tried to post the pictures directly on here, but havn't had any luck so hopefully this will work. I also tried to use a thumbnail like many of you have with your sign in handle, but havn't figured that out either.
  3. time for first 600 miles oil and filter change, question ? would you go ahead and put the mobile 1 4t synthetic in now or wait. also do you need a filter wrench that fits a rachet or a regular one with a handle. just wanted to know before i start changing in the next few days. thanks, mike b.
  4. Ok, I just finished lowering the front end 1". Took about 6 hours because of the big thunderstorm that came through and knocking out the lights. Anyhow got it all back together and noticed that the air valves for the two front cylinders are up against the handle bars and there is no way that I can put air in the front end without removing the handle bars. Any suggestions, or did I not get it back together correctly. I really don't want to take it all apart again. Thanks. John:confused24:
  5. What a difference changing out the clutch fluid after 39,000 miles. No more hard shifting and the clutch handle much stronger. Thanks for all the good info on this sight.
  6. 1st pic: I think riderduke lost something? 2nd pic: Not sure what Beer is up to. 3rd pic: Hmmmmm handle goes up. 4th pic: Hmmmmm handle goes down. 5th pic: Hmmmmm someone is peeking out of the door. Wonder who that could be. Margaret
  7. Well, I rode a Vision on my trip to Death Valley last weekend and was pretty impressed with the bike overall. Has plenty of smooth power, very, very comfortable. I don't believe that I've ever sat on a more comfortable bike. The ergos were perfect for me (6'1", 230 lbs.). What's truly unique about this bike is that the damn thing fits almost anyone because of the handle bar pull back, low seat height, and extra long floor boards. One of my buddies is 5'8" and had no problem handling this huge bike. I say huge, cause it's damn near as long as the U.S.S. Missouri and weighs 890 lbs. wet. It kinda freaks you out at first cause the windshield is so far out in front of you, and couple that with the fixed fairing, and it takes some getting use to. I was doing almost 75 when I dropped down into 6th gear and it felt like it wasn't even needed. It's a very stable bike in that it handles cross winds, sweepers, and twisties extremely well. The adjustable windshield (electric) makes a huge difference for the passenger when in the highest position. The model we had had everything except the navigation system (heated grips, seats, etc, very nice). Sound of the stereo was excellent. Plug-ins in's galor for your MP3 player and IPOD. Saddlebags are lacking somewhat in space, but the trunk is a good size. We met a writer (Clement Salvadori) from "Rider Magazine" on the trip who was doing a review and of the Vision (he was riding his Vision with a group of BMW sport touring riders) for the magazine at a restaraunt in the park and he sat down with us and picked our brains about our impressions of the bike. I'm gonna get the next issue to see if he plagerized any of us. The bike drew crowds everywhere we went. It's a great machine and I would recommend it to anyone seeking a serious touring bike. (By the way, I had my Midnight RSV parked right next to it and got just as many compliments as the Vision. People were fascinated by the Vision, but also appreciated the "old school" look of the RSV. A lot of people just couldn't handle the futuristic look of the Vision.)
  8. I was wondering if anyone knows if the Yamaha STR-4YV27-17-03 handle bar clamp will work on a Venture if you have the risers installed? It looks to me like the clamp will not clear the inside of the fairing where the cruise control on/off switch is located. Does anyone know for sure? Thanks http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e224/royalsteve/STR-4YV27-17-03.jpg
  9. I replaced my handle bar grips with a pair of Kuryakyn grips ...and now I noticed that my handle bar is shaking more, then before when I take my hands from the handle bar .. Is that because I removed the handle bar weights?
  10. My grips in the handle bar was removed.so i got a OG one its not original..but the thing is that i find very difficult to enter that grip into the handle bar.whats the problem with that..i know its not original..but that also i had to pay a very good amount...any suggestions would be appreciated...
  11. I received today from KitCarson a Pair of Küryakyn Handle Bar Grips. ( Thank you very much ) and my question is .. How do you remove the original Grips without Destroying them.
  12. Hey today is Friday........I was assured by the Yamaha folks that my Clutch Basket would be here this week......well we have about 8 hours left......I have been patient......quite so I think........even found me a new dealer who is quite nice.....but still he is dependent upon Yamaha. I am not sure what the deal is with this clutch basket.....whether they make a whole new one.....or blueprint one already made......hey do not care anymore.........I just want it fixed. My Basket full of Crickets completely quits at high speeds..say 65 in 4th and on up to 75 in 5th. Smooth as silk......Hey I do not ride that fast much.....only if wanting to go somewhere and I hit the interstate....normally I love the back roads......take a long lazy ride.....55 mph tops......do the speed limit......keep one eye on all the passing impatient cages. That is how I like to ride. At these speeds the whine is very high pitched and annoying....... So today is the day of decision.......if they do not call me....I am done......the Venture is a nice bike.........but hey.........that screaming eagle down at the Harley shop is looking better and better........I may find myself going in just to look again today..... So what do you all think........think you can handle an old school Harley Rider with a sense of humor? I am used to making head gaskets out of a Tide soap box.....but hear testing has been done and Fab boxes are much more tear resistant..........:stirthepot: Kit
  13. lewis, you steered me right.got my new v-star 1300.what a nice bike.just what i was looking for.so far the only complaints are.drivetrain noise, drivetrain noise, and did i say drive train noise.of course i'm hardened do to the legendary chirp so i can handle it.highly reccomend this scoot if you can't handle the weight anymore and are true to yammers like me.although a kawasaki accidently turned up in my workshop.felt sorry for it just sitting in a crate.lol let the chroming begin.
  14. Kuryakyn LED Trunk Handle ,think it will fit the RSV ? http://www.wingstuff.com/pgroup_detail/4034/
  15. Greetings, I'm looking for some feedback on what is "normal" front brake performance for a Gen1. My issue is that the handle has what I would describe as "excessive" travel and the brakes just don't seam to bit very well. The handle does not have excessive free play and I can feel the brakes start to engage as I would expect but they take a lot of handle travel and pressure to get it stopped, even at slower speeds. I have completely rebuilt the hydraulics (no pitting in the bores noted, just hard seals etc) but am still not satisfied with the performance. The system has been bleed several times manually and with an air powered vacuum bleeder so I'm confident it is not air in the system. I did not replace the pads as they appeared to be new but do not know what brand/type they are. As a former Mercedes/BMW cage tech (till my hands gave out) I'm confident that the work was done correctly. I realize that the front brake only operates the one caliper but still I expected more. My last big bike was an 03 BMW GS 1150 Adv and my current other bike is an 82 SECA 400 so I realize that I'm comparing apples and oranges but it just doesn't feel right. I've never ridden any other Ventures but have several Gold Barges and they were much better then mine. I've searched around the forum but have not been able to find anything related to what I'm experiencing. Is it possible that the hoses are swelling and causing the soft handle and poor performance? Can the "anti-dive" actuator be affecting it? Does anyone have experience with the steel braided lines on a Gen1? The only place I've found them they want almost $400 for a full set and I'm not ready to "invest" that much in this bike (yet). My "gut" is telling me it is the hoses and pads but want others feed back before I throw any parts at it. Sorry this is so long but wanted to get as much information captured as possible. Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Bill Colbert,WA
  16. I have owned A 85 Venture for 3 yrs and wanted to upgrade to newer one. And on E Bay Saw MM Edition and fell in love . Fellow drove 2000 miles Texas to NJ with it. And my first 2 miles thought I went backwards 15 years. The whining noise and Handling was disappointing to a point if I had not bought it on E Bay would have told the guy to stick it you know where. My grilfreind loves bike and the ride and so now need to address the problems with this bike since she is the one that pushed E Bay Purchase now button . I ordered 36" wide handle bars to see if I can gain more steering control . The whining I can live with as long as I know it is normal. But not hearing it on 85 Venture I really thought I bought a lemon of a bike not knowing it existed on the newer bikes. ?????Has anyone felt the way I do about these newer bikes and what have you done to make bike handle and feel like you have control. Or am I going to have to sell the bike and go to a Goldwing which I do not like as far as looks go for a motorcycle. I think Yamaha better wake up if they want to continue in Dresser market. I would not buy another after what I have experience with this bike. Have to mention that I bought a new 96 Royal Star and loved bike until I relized taking balancer out caused me back problems..
  17. I would just like to say thank you to everybody that gave advice and suggestions concerning the clutch on the moneypit. And the winner is.....MBrood! After reading everyone else's advice-he raised an interesting point. Knowing that I had just put a kit in the master cylinder, including the rod that works the thing, he started talking about aftermarket cylinders and handles. That got me to thinking- I have a black brake handle, but the clutch handle is polished metal, and when I bought the bike there was a broken black handle in the trunk. He said that if I had put in an OEM pushrod between the handle and cylinder-that the rod may be too long- filed off 1/8" from the end that goes into the handle, and no more slip. It seems that you always have to have a little handle free play to ensure no pressure in order for the return to be free. After filing down the rod, I've logged about 700 miles on the bike, 200 yesterday at 90+ temps. To quote Forrest Gump "that's good, one less thing". Thanks again guys.
  18. I am having trouble with bleeding the front brakes on my wife's 2005 V-Star classic. I replaced the upper brake hose. The one from the master res. on the handle bar to the splitter. Neither of the banjo's are leaking. I replaced the fluid till it ran clear through both caliper bleeders. Now the fluid runs clear but the lever still has no back pressure. It just travels right to the handle bar. Its almost as if the piston in the master cly. is not full, and yet it pushes the fluid out the bleeders. Any suggestion would be greatly appeciated. Wayne
  19. Ok, I know this has been explained here before. I put a kit in the clutch master cylinder on my 89VR thursday. I couldnt get it to bleed so I tried gravity bleed thursday night.-No such luck. I cannot get the thing to bleed. I filled line by removing bleed screw then filled until no bubbles just air comes out of hole. put screw back. When I pull handle with no line on it and my finger over the hole, I have very little pressure. It actually seems to have more when I release the handle as it gets pretty good suction. Anyways, when I hook it all together and pump the handle, when I hold in handle and open screw, I get about an inch and a half of fluid into bleeder line. Close screw, pumphandle some, open screw, I get about a quarter inch of fluid in line. close bleeder. Release handle and pump again, this time I get nothing. Am I not holding my mouth right here or what.
  20. :confused24:I have an 89Vr. The cruise seems to have power, (the lights light up) but the cruise doesnt work. There is a plunger switch on the clutch handle that has a broken mount(plastic thats in the housing that clips into the handle bracket). Therefore, the plunger is always open. Would this be connected to the cruise somehow? If so can I bypass it? It doesn't seem to have any other function. If this isn't the problem, does anybody have any idea where to start? Electrical isn't one of my strong points.
  21. Now what in the world is wrong now? I can't get the CB to change channels - it stays on channel 9 no matter which buttons I push - on the CB, on the left handle bar, on the rear control. I am sure I am doing something stupid - what is it?
