does any one know who makes a fork brace for a 2007 venture thanks mike
  3. Like the little dog said when the train ran over it's tail: It won't be long now! The project that Matt and I have been working on is coming together after it had been sitting idle collecting dirt dabber's nest and pine straw for the past eight years. Problem started when he lost the seal on anti dive valve and lost fork oil in front shocks. He let a buddy work on who let it fall over in his shop which broke the stator cover where the shifter rod penetrats it taking the shifter linkage out. So then it sat in the drive-way, out in the rain, full of bad gas, for eight years. Like I said collecting dirt dabbers and pine straw. We managed to get it pushed up onto a trailer to get it hauled over to my house where it has been for the past few months in various states of disassembly. Matt and his wife Charlotte have been very patient with me while I took a month off to Sturgis and to ride around in the wild west on my latest adventure. So when I got back it was time to buckle down and get back to work. So.... We drained the fluids removed the side covers and had them dipped and polished Went through the electrical system cleaning and checking electrical contacts removed and rebuilt the carbs changed out the fuel filter fixed the anti dive valve replaced the fork oil replaced the clutch perch and slave cylinder Bleed the clutch system and recharged replaced the covers new oil filter and oil new brake fluid cleaned and repaired all the plastic body parts Synched the carbs In the morning we are going to rebuild rear brake caliper and as soon as we get the brakes right put the plastic back on. I expect that we will be riding tomorrow. :7_6_3[1]: Before and after pictures to follow tomorrow. I quess next project will be to find a job. I've about milked this last motorcycle adventure vacation which has lasted six years. Just hope I can find a motorcycle job,
  4. Boy! I worked out all the little issues with my '85 save one. That irritating, sloppy front end wiggle while making tight parking lot turns. I hate that! Is there a GOOD fork brace out there in wiggle land that will tighten things up a bit?
  5. I've spent the evening searching the forum and find a bunch of talk about the forks bottoming out but nothing on them topping out. I have a 91 VR with stock fork springs and fresh seals. I added oil per the instructions (5.5" from collapsed top. I can't remember the weight of the oil. When we ride, with the air set to medium, the fork will top out at times and makes a "clunk" sound. It doesn't seem to cause a problem, just a worrisome sound. Any ideas? Thanks, Roger
  6. Not sure this is the right forum, but a friend of mine has a 87 Royal and wants to put fork boots on it, A number of years back, in the late 80s early 90s someone came up with the idea to put Rancho Shock boots on,, they worked great, BUT I have no idea what the number for them was, Anybody else remember that and do you know the number of them, Thanks,, DAve p.s. I no longer ride, but put a lot of miles on a 83 and 87 venture, some of the first rallies in Steamboat Springs and Kalispell, MT. with VTS
  7. I just bought a very clean, low-mileage '84 and am working my way through a few issues. Probably the most troubling is the bottoming and nearly complete lack of dampening on the front forks. They are so bad that I can bounce them up and down (with or without brake applied) and hear them hit what appears to be the end of their travel. The PO had someone do a variety of work to this bike including "replacing fork seals" although I don't see any parts on the work order for over 6 hours of labor! Since I could see that there was a leak at the lower mating surface of the left anti-dive, I drained all the oil from that side. After removing the EAND, I cleaned and inspected the o-rings and grooves. They were not hard not flattened and had no nicks. So, I put them back in, put a light coating of Yamabond on the surface and tightened the bolts. After I put in 13.5 oz of 15W oil, I let it sit for 24 hours, aired it up to about 13 with the CLASS and found virtually no difference. While I have a spare set of forks from another '84, I really hate to do the swap and brake bleeding if I don't need to. There is an apparent adjustment at the bottom of each of these and some mention in the Tech area about the Service Manual "being wrong". All it says is to "turn the bolt to the maximum (??) position. Compress the front forks while applying the front brake. If the forks compress easily, the anti-dive system may be damaged. Is it worth fooling with this adjustment? Is it worth swapping out this unit from a different fork? Is it possible that the fork springs are so weak that this might be the only cause (It is 24 years old, but only has 31K). Could the mechanic that the PO used have misassembled something that would allow such clunky bottoming? (There are no apparent fork leaks). If he simply put the springs in upside down; would that allow this condition? Any ideas will be appreciated. Murph'
  8. As some know my friend went down saturday and we are trying to get the bike back on the road. he needs upper fork tubes for a 08 roadstar 1700. If anyone knows of the best place to find them any links would be great. Pacific coast has some but they are 2" longer and i'm not sure how much that would change. They are $325.00 a set. He doesn't have very much xtra cash so the cheaper the better since I will probly be the one to pay for them. He is recovering well now it's time for the bike. Thanks guys! http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=25767
  9. 2 questions (this pertains to my 83 Venture) - 1. I bought one of the fork braces that Condor was so kind to arrange a group buy for us this spring, and am just now getting around to installing it. It appears to be just a bit larger than my original, and I can't get it to slip into position. I loosened the pinch bolts as suggested in Condor's instructions, but no change. I am also working on installing a pair of chrome rotor covers (see below), so i went ahead and pulled the axle and allowed the wheel to drop down an inch or so (rotors are still just slightly in the calipers). None of this has made any difference in the clearance for the fork brace. When I set the original brace over the new brace, it does look a bit larger - about the size of the bevel that runs around the outer edge of the new brace - just eye-balling it, I would guess it is about a millimeter oversize on each end . Has anyone else who purchased these had a similar problem? 2. I bought a pair of chrome rotor covers last winter on eBay and after doing some searches on this site, found that originally they came with a replacement spacer that accounted for the extra width of the covers. When I pulled the axle, I expected a spacer/washer of some kind on the right side (since the speedometer assembly is on the left). The only kind of "spacer" on the entire assembly was a single collar-type piece that butts against the oil seal. This does not look at all like the diagram in the service manual (it shows 3 separate pieces). I have attached a picture. I was planning to turn down my spacer since I did not have a replacement. So the question now is whether I turn down the outer edge of this collar? (Don't see where i have much choice). Was just wondering if anyone had any insight into this. Windrider1983 (Mark Miller).
  10. I am rebuilding the forks on my '87 VR and I am going to replace the springs with with Progressives. I found them on Dennis Kirks's for $77.99. Should I order seals also? My front brake pads are soaked with fork oil and I don't know what kind to replace them with. My questions are: What weight oil? How much oil? What kind of brake pads? Thanks, Kevin
  11. Can anyone out there suggest a safe solvent to rinse out the fork tubes on my 83 (with 86 forks) I did an on the road repair and temporarily replaced the fork oil with ATF. Now I want to rinse them out before I refill with new fork oil. Ideas anyone?
  12. Any one have advise on how to push up the air joint bracket to remove the spring wire clip so that the fork leg will drop down (shown manual page 5-30) If it just pushes up it must take a 500 pound ape - cause mine won't move Thanks all
  13. Evening all, I come in search of knowledge and advice. I'm rebuilding the forks on an 89 MkII and I've run into some oddities. Quick background, someone previously has been into the bike who shouldn't have. When I went to take the handlebars off, both pinch bolts were backed way out. There are other things like this with the bike. So, I create a tool to disassemble the forks (worked well, cheap, write up to follow if anyone is interested.) and got things separated. The bottoms of these forks have been beat to death! The hole in the bottom that the allen bolt should come out of was so mangled that judicious use of a dremel tool was necessary to get the bolt all the way out. Once everything was apart, it appears I have some issues. 1. I appear to be missing the tapered spindle, part #26H-23173-00-00 from one side. What the heck? I've looked everywhere, don't THINK I could have lost it, but maybe. 2. And this is where I could use some guidance. There are still some parts "stuck" in the bottom of the upper fork tube. I can see and feel what looks like a white plastic notched or "castellated" washer type part, and there appear to be some parts "above" that. I've tried some judicious tapping with an appropriately sized socket to drive them out, but don't want to use too much force on these parts. 3. Neither fork as, as far as I can find, the two washers #26H-2319L-00-00 or the single valve spring #26H-2319M-00-00. I'm wondering if the forks could have been assembled improperly, and now those parts are jammed in the bottom of the fork tube. 4. The fork springs that were in the bike are about 75% of the length of the Progressives I'm replacing them with. I'll post pics, but the difference is ridiculous. The forks had absolutely no pre-load on them whatsoever, even with some gargantuan spaces made out of electrical conduit. So, should I continue to try to get the parts out of the bottom of the upper fork tube, or are they supposed to be where they are? I'm really thinking they need to come out, but would like other opinions. Thanks everyone! Paul
  14. I got to take it out on somebody and you are a pretty good target.... My radio suddenly stopped working. And I know why. It is Condor's fault. See the way I figure is like this. With that new fork brace on the bike, I have been joyfully entering the curves and appreciating the smooth ride except for the occasional bump or two. Well, maybe a bit more than that, but with my progressive springs, well, can't be too bad. So. Radio suddenly stops working. I think sad thoughts. Ready to start looking for blown fuse, torn wires, bad radio, other horrible options. Then. I see the whole radio insert thingie is sitting lopsided. Press it back in place and wallah everthing is fine. Had it not been for Condor getting us a good fork brace for a good price none of this would have ever happened! __________________
  15. Ok I finally got time this evening to install my new Fork Brace. I got the black and I suppose it doesn't look bad. A little different, but I'm glad I went with the black, maybe just to be different. So far I haven't got to test it out yet. I only got a short ride in this evening and didn't get to try out the top end yet, but I will be soon. I'l proide an update later to see if my wobble is any better. (Thanks Condor)
  16. I'm changing Fork Oil on my '93 and stumbled across something weird. In the Manual i downloaded from here, Yammi states to fill 409 ml of Oil in each Fork Leg. As i'm no Friend of this Way, i measured the Air Chamber after the proper Fill. This Amount of Fluid leads to a Air Chamber (or eventually Oil Level) of 245 mm without Springs and the Legs compressed. Imho, that's way too much Airchamber for a Travel of 140mm. I researched the same Shop Manual and in the Specs Summary Yammi states a Oil Level of 172 mm. As the Reference of 'Oil Level' isn't stated, i assume they take the Measurement between Top of Oil and Top of the inner Fork Tube which is the Air Chamber. I researched a Lot of Fork Oil Threads here and got inconsistent Results. A Member stated to buy 2 Quarts others didn't mention any Kind of Quantity. Basically and my first Question to those who have done that in past would be: How much Oil do i need to refill both Legs ? It could be either 409 ml per Leg and have a real big Air Chamber or something around 540 ml per Leg which would lead to an Air Chamber at 170 mm. All other Forks worked on in my Life have had around 10 Percent more Airchamber than the Fork Travel was. This Formula would lead to an Airchamber with 155 mm. Maybe this is the Answer to some bad Behaviour of the front End which some 1Gen Rider suffer from.
  17. Hi All I was wondering if anyone has any ideas about how to link the right and left fork tube air fittings. I worry about the pressure being different from side to side. Also, any ideas about a radiator surround for a 2006 Venture? It seems to need some chrome. Thanks for any help you can offer Marty
  18. I have read that everyone says to put on a set of Progressive springs on the front. I am going to have my forks rebuilt and I wanted to know if this is the time to install them? They go inside of the fork tubes right? Does anyone know where I can get a set and what the part number is? Can I still use the air suspension? Thanks, Kevin
  19. Hell Friends. Well I finally got home Thursday morning after being gone working for 38 days. After a short nap I took my paperwork to the courthouse and got the Black Beast relicensed.( I had to apply for a rebuild title). I slapped the license plate on, fired her off and went for a 3 hr cruise. Boy did it feel GOOOOOOD to be back on her. As good a bike as the Nomad is it just doesn't compare to a RSV. A couple of the changes that I made that I was wondering about were the handle bars and the front fork springs. I put a set of Flander's bars on and man what a difference. I had the 1 1/2 inch Baron's risers on but these bars are so much better there is no comparison. This should be the bars that Yamaha uses as stock. I cant wait il I can go on an all day run to see how good I will feel. The fork springs were changed out for a set of firmer springs from Sonic Springs. Since I am an agressive rider I wanted a little firmer front fork. I also changed out the fork oil to 10 w oil. Boy did I get a firmer front end. I drove hard down into a couple of corners just to see what would happen when I laid on the front brake. It was amazing. The bike did not try to stand up at all. And the ride??? With 6 lbs of air in the front shocks, I did add a air balance kit also, it rode as smooth and soft as it did when it was new. I took out the rear lowering links and went back to stock when I changed out the rear brake line. I'm not totally happy with the way it sits so I am going to make a set of links that are half way between stock and the Baron's set. When I rode 2 up the mufflers would drag way too much to suit me. I even pumped the air up to 65 psi on the rear shock but it didn't seem to help. I will let ya'll know how that works out. In my rush to get back on the road I have not cleaned her up good yet. As soon as I can get it cleaned and waxed I will post some pics of her. She looks as good as new.
  20. Ok, my head is spinning. After the last couple posts I have made, all the replies I have gotten, thinking about a couple different issues I am having/have had with my bike and reading the following posts: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=13582 http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=13218 Among several others... Here are my thoughts... PLEASE pipe in with your thoughts. When I bought my 83 VR (about a month ago), the right front brake rotor was COVERED in what I thought was brake fluid. It was so soaked that the front brake wouldn't even slow the bike down, not to even talk about stopping it. The guy I bought it from told me that it was leaking brake fluid from between the two caliper halves. I thought, 'Ok I will fix that'. I needed to get it passed on state inspection, so I cleaned up all of the fluid from the brake rotor, the caliper and the pads REALLY good and took it in for inspection. It passed fine and the front brake worked great. When I got home I thought to myself, if there was that much fluid on the rotor, the front brake resevior must be low. I carefully cleaned the outside of the resevior, removed the screws and pulled off the cover. It is completely full. I am bewildered, but content that maybe the problem will re-show itself making diagnosis easier. After a couple hundred miles, the brake rotor is still completely dry and the front brake resevoir is still completely full. Now, another issue I am expiriencing is the apparent bottoming out of the front end when I hit normal road bumps. And sometimes cornering feels really wierd (nice description, huh?). I checked the air in the front end with the CLASS system and it seems fine at 14 psi. Now I am wondering if the fluid was folk oil, and if the bottoming out and shaky cornering are a result of either no fork oil in the right fork or uneven fork oil levels in the two front forks. What do you think? Is there a way to check the fork oil level in the forks? How do I add fork oil to the forks if they are low? Sorry this is so long. Please forgive a "newbie". I also wanted to express my thanks to all of you who are so willing to offer advice. This website is GREAT and I am so glad to be a part of it. -Mike
  21. This looks like an aftermarket fork brace. Not stock. Item number: 170135838976 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/yamaha-venture-royale-1200-fork-brace-chrome_W0QQitemZ170135838976QQihZ007QQcategoryZ10066QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
  22. Many of you have installed Tony's passing light extension bracket. I just did and I love not having to drop the lights to split the fairing. I noticed, however, that the clear plastic lowers are attached to the passing light bar, and that extending the passing lights also moved the lowers away from the forks about 2 inches so that the rubber bumper no longer supported the lowers. I've read that others here have had lowers break when they were not supported against the fork. For this reason I installed a 2" bolt through the bottom hole in the bracket and put a rubber tip on the end of it so now it rests nicely against the fork. Just wondering what some of you done with this situation. I'm interested in how others have dealt with this. Thanks!
  23. I recently installed progressive fork springs on my 91 VR. Now I have a fork seal starting to leak. It's making a puddle on the garage floor. Is this common? I'm probably going to have my dealer put in the new seals. The service manager is very VR savi. Any advice? Is there anything else I should have done while they're in there?.
  24. Hello all: I have a '90 VR and noticed that the accordian-style fork tube cover boots have tears in them. Any suggestions in repairing these to keep dirt, etc. off the fork tubes and keep the boots looking good? Thanks for your help. Grayghost.
  25. i'm new to the Venture world so please be patient. i just bought an 87 venture 1300 that had been sitting for years. it only has 8500 miles on it. the guy i bought it from said he had the local yamaha shop replace the fork oil. however, the slightest curb or difference in the road seems to bottom out the front forks. what do you all suggest? so far i love my venture!!
