  1. I have an 87 Venture. The left 2 cylinders will not fire unless I restrict the airflow to the carbs. When I restrict the air a little, both cylinders start to fire. I was told that the carb slide might be at fault as the bike was sitting for a year or so. Is this correct?
  2. I need to rebuild both the Master and Slave clutch cylinders on my '99 RSV. Where can I get the kits? Anyone have part numbers?
  3. I downloaded the instructions off the web. My question is which cylinders are 1 and 2? Which is 3 and 4? Thanks BB1
  4. I've noticed the different looks between the cylinders on the Gen1 & Gen2 Ventures. Are the Gen2 cylinders still liquid cooled like the Gen1's? I know Kawasaki changed to only cooling the cylinder heads and not the cylinders on the 1700cc and 2000cc Vulcans for some strange reason. This is the main reason I wouldn't have a new Kawasaki. Thanks , Mike
  5. Picked up my bike from the dealer at lunch they replaced the head gaskets and verified my rattle was the collector (total $240 and 2.5 hours). Hopefully this will resolve my heat issue coming from the rear cylinders. I tried to get this info from the (service) manual bur either missed it or it's not there, so here is the purpose of this post. The "heatshield" on the top of the rear cylinders and the canister which fits just above that on the back side both are damaged from the heat, i.e. they melted! What is the canister (it's got two hose nipples recessed in the top), what is it for, do I need it? if so, does someone have one? She seems to run fine without it though. Thanks.
  6. I have a set of vance and hines pipes on it now i am looking for a short set of pipes that have a little style to them. The pipes i have now just have four pipes running straight back. I just want something that is short of the the cylinders. Having trouble finding them and what do you think my pipes are worth?
  7. Ok guys, I've searched and searched threads on this site and have gotten some good ideas (like setting the floats from V7Goose), but one thing I suspect and haven't been able to find any info on is testing procedures for the coils. The problem is after syncing the carbs my gas mileage went down and it still seems like the cylinders aren't all firing evenly. It's got new plugs in it (original NGK#) and all vacuum lines and plugs are good. I also run a can of Sea Foam regularly. Can anyone help with more suggestions?
  8. Does anyone know where the idel screw is on my 87 VR. I have looked for it and I am having trouble finding it. Is it a thumb screw like in the manual or a slotted screw? Also ,how would I be sure all 4 cylenders are firing? Will it run on 3 cylinders without notice except loss of power? The reason I ask is the scoot sat up for 6 years before I woke it up and seams to run smooth but I dont know if all cylinders are fireing and idels so low it cuts off when throttle grip is at idel position. Any help would be great. Thanks!!
  9. In Gallup, NM. Headed to Grand Canyon tomorrow, then on to Los Angelos. Clutch started acting low on pressure. It is NOT slipping. But clutch lever is barely activating clutch. Catching just as soon as it leaves the grip. Fluid is full. I emptied the master cylinder and refilled with fresh DOT. Where is Slave and how do I get to it. What tools will I need, as I may have enough, but want to know before I open it up? Can I easily rebuild both cylinders myself if it comes down to it? Doubt I can find a dealer in LA who can do a 1 day turnaround. Any suggestions?
  10. I pulled my Bub Sleeper slip-ons off earlier today to wrap packing around the baffles and noticed a considerable amount of black soot on the right side baffle and none on the left side. I'm assuming that the right side (which ever cylinders, carbs, etc. exhaust though it) is running too rich. Would a carb sync take care of this? Thanks
  11. Hi, I have a question about the first gens vents. I bought an 83 VR and while Im not trying to make it a museum piece, I do want to fix what I can and make the bike as functional as possible. I have a couple of broken vents on the fairing (the ones on the sides of the fairing that blow cool air on your legs) and one of my vents covering the back two cylinders is broken and doesnt want to stay open. My question is in 2 parts.....first, I have noticed several pics on the Venture Galleries of 83 - 86's that dont have vents over the back two cylinders, instead that spot is open and on some there is a curved piece of chrome. Is this something yamaha did? Like the difference between Ventures and Venture Royale models? Or is this a modification that riders have come up with to let the engine have a little more air flow. The other question is about locating new vents....any suggestions? Ebay? Websites? Junkyards? Thanks for any feedback Paul:thumbsup:
  12. I am looking for some help with a problem I am having with my bike. I have an 84 venture. I was out for a ride with some guys and one of them suggested to me that they think my bike is only running on 3 cylinders. This did not come as too much of a shock to me as my dad had had the problem two years ago. (The bike was his) He took it in and they replaced the "ignition unit". He seemed to think that the problem was fixed. Being that I am a new rider I realy didn't notice any lose of power, the bike has run the same the whole time I have used it. What I am wondering is how do I know if it is only running on 3 cylinders and what should or can I do to try and fix it. I don't want to have replace that ignition unit again, it cost pops about a $1000 bucks. Also when riding the bike seems to ( for lack of a better discription ) cough when in 2 and 3 gear at about 3500rpm. It doesen't lose power or jerk or anything like that. It just makes a noise. Could this be related to the cylinder problem? Any help or suggestions would be greatly apreciated. Thanks in advace and ride safe.
  13. I was fumbling through last night and found something about changing the vac. line on 1st Gen to match V max. It's supposed to help with low end by equalizing vaccuum between cylinders... or something like that. Does anybody know where to find this thread or the info of which I ask???? Thanx much!! GG
  14. I tried posting in classifieds but maybe having problems.$1000 if anyone is interested. Can see pix here. http://good-times.webshots.com/album/558803476vqQKXk Firing on 3 cylinders but I have new plug wires.Needs rear tire and fork seals.E4 error code.Rear reflector is broken but I have a new one.
  15. Hey fellows, I am a first time poster with a problem. I have an 87 Venture that keeps fouling out the rear plugs. I beleive they are cylinders 1 & 3. I recently purchased this as a project and boy is it one. I need direction. I have checked the diaphragms and slides, no issues. I put new plugs in the rear and it ran like a scalded dog for about 20-30 miles but has slowly degraded back to a backfiring, two rear cylinders only, beast. When I first got the bike the two rear exhaust gaskets were worn completely out, pipes slid back and fourth inside the exhaust manifold. Any help would be appreciated and if this has been covered before I apologize. I have searched for old post's regarding this issue and could not find any. Thanks,
  16. Does anyone know what type of exhaust tempretures at the head the 1st Gens run or how much of of a differential between cylinders I should look for. I have one of those laser tempreture readers. My bike has an exhaust smell like possibly unburned fuel people have told me and sometimes I feel it might be running on 3 cylinders but seems to run pretty well.
  17. What happens when the diaphragms go ont the 1300 motor? Does it limit the amount of fuel that can be delivered to the cylinders? If so that may account for my very low top speetd. Is it difficult to access the diaphragms to check or replace them?
  18. The ones that hook to the vacuum ports on the carb boots at cylinders 2 and 3 and go up above the carbs. Where do they go and what are they for?
  19. I'm just wondering if all of your 06rstd's/ventures have a whirring sound like a jet engine when you roll the throttle? I was out Saturday and parked beside a venture that didn't have that sound. Mine has, since it was bought new last August. I thought it was due to the 4 cylinders? Milage and acceleration are both great but definitely doesn't have a V-twin sound. Should I be worried? What can you yama-experts tell me?
