  1. I have a 99 RSV. I was changing the spark plugs on the bike tonight and when I took the tank off I discovered quite a bit of gas on and around the air box on the top of the carbs. The only thing I could find was the boots on the top of the left carbs were quite loose. I don't know if I have a vacuum leak some where or why there would be gas hanging around up there. Oh and the bike has been running perfect. Any thoughts would be appreciated, not real familiar with carb works.
  2. My son-in-law has an 1980 Yamaha XS850G that he has let sit a couple of years. He enjoys the bike but is not mechanically inclined and funds are a concern. We are working to get the bike running again this year for his birthday. The starter quit, and he parked it at that point. My plans are: Remove and clean out the tank, fresh fuel Remove and clean the carbs Sync the carbs Track down the starter issue - I'm guessing the solenoid but need to test it. Install new battery Here's where I'm hoping for some input and ideas. The mufflers have lost the back end, making them straight pipes and too loud. I don't know much about muffler systems. Can the current pipes be repaired by putting in new baffles? Should I replace them? Many here have used mufflers off of Harleys, is this an option? Is it conditional on the pipe diameter? I'm not sure I know enough to ask all of the questions I need to ask. Please let me know any info I need. Dave:detective:
  3. Last summer I ran out of time on this project, but I am going to ride it this summer. '87 VR, I redid the carbs last summer, synced them and that was where it sat all winter. I put Stabil in the tank, but before I started it this week I put all new gas in the tank. Yesterday it was running, not great but running. Today it ran like crap so started checking, and apparently the #4 plug was fouled, so replaced it. Now on the right side I am getting pops and backfires like crazy, and throttle is not real responsive, sometimes it seems to run away a little bit. This is all just sitting on the center stand not riding it. So, my conclusion is that the #4 float may be sticking. Am I on the right track, and if I am, I assume that the only option is to take the carbs off and open #4 up. Not a big deal, I can have the carbs off in about 20 minutes now, I've done it so often. Any input? Thanks D
  4. 89 vr:took the carbs off the 93,put them on the 89,run great,2200 mls,got home, took diap, from 89 carb,as 93 had holes,i had patched, run good for about 20 mls, bike starts & run like the excetator pump dose not work[i know that it dose not have an excelator pump]sea form-marvo mist oil,1200 mls to get it to run kinda right, have to have the chock, pulled out, outer wises, open the throttle a little,it will die, holding speed, it hasatates, just like no excelaror pump, pulled the air filter, spray a little gas in,works like it should, ijust can't beleave that all 4 carbs are, screewer up,so put the 89 carbs back on,runs like it should what do you thank:confused24:
  5. :sign09::sign09:Helpppppp. I'm trying to wrap up bike rebuild project in time to make it to Daytona. My Atl riding buddies pulled out this morning and Venturerider.org buddies are waiting and I'm still dealing with carb set up issues.:icon_smile_question:doh: So I'm asking, pleeding begging for help from you carb gurus in talking me through getting carbs set up. To help speed up the process I'm setting up the laptop in shop with web cam focused on project so those helping can see in real time video feed at the rate of 6 frames per minute. The link for video feed is http://Webcamnow.com/DragonslayerBob I will also be constantly monitoring this thread for feedback. Video cam should be online by 11:30am EST. To make it interesting and fun I'm make a contest out of it. The person most helpful in helping me get issues solved in time to make it to Daytona will win a prize of thier choice between Daytona Bike Week 2008 souvenier or a On Board Liquid beverage dispenser kit (My Invention and product) with on line instructions on installation. To get the ball rolling, this is where I'm at. The new motor is installed cranked and running, The air box is off, the diaphrams are all bouncing at different rates. The carbs have slow gas leak which is pooling around top lip of intake boots then dripping down. Choke is on. When I decrease choke and increase throttle engine bogs down and dies. During rebuild project I separated four carbs and installed new main diaphrams and coast enricher diaphrams, put back together and remounted to intake boots. What Do I Do Now?
  6. Has anyone tried this kit? I want to re-jet my carbs, then I saw this this. is it any good? Thanks
  7. Change the plugs in my "06" today and I notice the area around the carbs on the left side (on/off fuel valve side) had alot of oily film, that plastic box that sits on top of the carbs, I removed the top was the same, on the left oily and normal on the right. Don't know what to make of that? Any ideas? Some kind of blow by????
  8. Does anyone know or has anyone tried to exchange the diaphrams from the 83-85 carbs to the 86 to 93 carbs. In other words are they interchangable.

  12. Nice 84 on Sale on EBAY Low mileage needs a little work. Looks like Red Barons brother. Anyone here bidding on. Inquiring minds want to know. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-Yamaha-Venture-1984-Yamaha-Venture_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6718QQihZ010QQitemZ200192020368QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW Ok took closer look. I agree looks like it might have been stored without heat because of the corrision on the engine. But could be a fixer upper. Carbs will probably need cleaned. Have sent question to the seller just for some information on storage will post when I know something if they answer
  13. Hey All, I hope the Holidays went great for all of you. I have pretty much spent almost all of my free time working on my project bike and so far thanks fo all of the great info form you all been able to replace front fork seals, rebuild master cylinders, brake calipers, and completely tear down and clean my carbs. I even build a handy home made sync tool and had began syncing the carbs, but that is where I have ran into another problem. They will not sync, 1 & 2 where OK, but 3 & 4 just will not make it. I ran a compression test and the are reading low (89 & 91). The bike is a 85 with 70,000 miles. So i figure it is time to shim them. So here is the question, I can buy a shim tool and shims and shims, or I can request to borrow the the "traveling shim kit" and add to it and send it back when I am done if it is still around? Guess that was a long winded way of asking can I please, please, please get use of it if it is still up to use. ... Thanks all
  14. just got my 01 Venture 1 week ago with only 1,900 mi on it. It has been setting out side under a cover for 5 years - that's a crime in my book!previous owner rode it 4 times last 2 years. said he had it dealer serviced march 06 and again in march 07. fluids are fine I put new battery, new plugs, it would not start. dumped old gas and new high octane, by-passed fuel filter, fuel pump works. pulled carbs and cleaned corrosion, cleaned and blew out all jets, needles, orifaces. first try and it started right up!! can accelerate if choke closed But quits if open choke the least bit. But the right front cyl (#4?) is cold. Should I pull the carbs again? never did find anything broken or clogged in carbs, but all the brass was tarnished from moisture intrusion I presume. Anyone can you please help me out here? Very anxious to get it running!!
  15. FINALLY!!!!!!:banana: After almost 9 weeks of not being on the scoot Allan H and I took our bikes for a nice hour + ride on some great twisties here in St. Charles and around. The weather was cold, about 40 degrees, but perfectly sunny. I cant tell you all how good it felt after all that it took to make it to this point. So to Denden for all his help with my carbs and Lumberjack 49 for the use of his enclosed trailer....Thank you. I wouldn't have made it this far without your generosity. You both helped Allan give me one of the best Christmas eve's I have ever had
  16. The first: I put the key in the bike and turned it to the "start" position and all that came on was the accessories. I had to turn the key back and try to get it to stay in between the "accessories" and "start" position to get the bike to turn over. Is this a problem that I can fix without having to buy a whole new ignition switch? I am hoping that something is just loose and can be tightened. The second: Not a huge issue but would like some advice. I would like to clean the carbs out and was thinking that I could do it the way I used to on my old Q-jet that was on my Chevelle; just shoot some brake cleaner down each carb and then run the bike to flush it out. I have done this on many different carbs and never had any issues. Is there any components on the RSV carbs that may be negatively affected by the brake cleaner? Thanks, Bubba
  17. You remember I got a "New" 1st Gen not long ago and been trying to find time to get carbs off and clean them to get it running. Bike shows 22k and owner swore that was right. Lot of goodies on it and needs cleaned badly. i finally got a little time to pull carbs today. He claimed it had never sat outside was in heated garage all its life. 25 yrs!! when I pulled carbs every thing I got to was stuck. Crud on carbs and bottom of air box was hard to believe. Bike does look good but makes me wonder where all that came from. And plugs are gone so someone has been in carbs. They are so dirty I'm thinking of swapping with "Blue Beast" I don't know of any place that soaks the things any more. Something wrong with that being that dirty. Might be 122k. I hope not and it sounds too good what few seconds I could get it to run priming it. I'll keep everyone posted. Carbs off the "Blue Beast"??? Hate to take that engine apart. Parts bike runs too good to take things from. i need another 1st Gen. Never have too many. Didn't mean to write book just thinking out loud and know there are a few wondering about the scoot.
  18. I just got my 2007 Venture in August of this year. Sold my 2003 V Star. I will be storing the Venture in the next month or so once the snow starts flyin here in Ontario. Normally I drain the carbs when I am storing after filling the Fuel tank with gas and stabilizer. I can't figure out how to drain the carbs on the Venture. Are there drain screws or some easy way of draining. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks JR
  19. Got one of my budys who just bought an 84 royal , the carbs need to be rebuilt , where can we find the parts for this first gen . thanks
  20. OK folks...I need some input here. I've seen several discussions on setting the float levels. I'm NOT much good when it comes to carbs. I can sync them and etc. but am always nervous about getting inside them. So yesterday, in my unending search to figure out my gas mileage problem, I decided to pull the carbs and check the float levels and etc. Several of you, including Cougar, Pegscraper and some others have done this and have reported that it's not a big job. WHATEVER...it took me about 10 hours to pull the carbs, set the floats and get it all back together. To make it worse, I'm now thinking that I may have done it wrong and need to pull them off again. The manual says that you set the floats at about .32 with the floats resting on but not compressing the needle valve. So, does that mean that with the carbs upside down that you lift the floats with your finger so that the tang is touching the needle and that is when you measure? Unfortunately, I set them with the carbs upside down and the floats at rest, not me lifting on them. I'm attaching a picture. You will see in the picture that the near side is laying way up in the housing. The far side I have adjusted and it is at about .32 with it just sitting there. I think I did it wrong but please tell me for sure. Here's the deal. Yesterday morning I check all four cylinders using my Colortune. At most all RPMS I had the nice Bunsen blue color as I should but had intermittent flashes of yellow. According to the color tune booklet, that is a sign of floats set too high. That is why I pulled them off. Finally got it all back together last night about 9:00 and fired it up. Now I have a definite backfire, pop, miss or something from the right side. Now I have not synced them yet and will do so but I really don't see where adjusting the floats would through the sync off. So.......HELP.
  21. I recently heard from one of our California members that he had been having some performance problems with his first gen Venture. He said that he finally got it resolved by a very good mechanic and some carb work. Turns out that it was caused by the gas that was being sold in his part of the country and I think that it is a very valid point. I asked him to let me know what was done and here is the answer to my question. I find it very interesting and it makes a lot of sense to me. I think it could also apply to the second gen Venture. Here is the response: Hi Don, good evening. I'll be as brief as I can, although Mary tells me it just isn't in my genetic make-up! My bike had just had a total engine rebuild, so should have run well, but not so. I kept fiddling with it, and it sort of ran okay, and was a rocket on the freeway. I went to this engine guy, Larry Holt, who has done two V-8's for me...I know how, but I'm 62 now, and someone else can do it for me. I told him I thought I had ignition trouble, and he said no way, not if I can do 80 on the hiway. And if Mary and I wanted to just putt around looking at the sights, the bike would run on it's own at 3000 rpm. I couldn't shut it off with the throttle return twist. Larry's solution was that there was a lean running fault because of the rotten gas we get here, and I'd messed up the carb sync trying to get it to idle as well as it did. We reamed the pilot (idle) jets in all four carbs from 16 thou to 18 thou, and reset the sync. An absolute miracle. Runs like a dream, with a ton of throttle response. The bottom line seems to be: the carbs were designed and built before the garbage gas here in California, and with all the added alcohol, they now run lean. Just for laughs, I put in some 110 octane aviation gas, and oh my! What a ride! Hope this helps someone, somewhere.....Best regards, Mike
  22. my parts list is winding down. the list under 'parting out '83' is now on page 10 and is getting smaller. however, the carbs, saddlebags, and trunk are still available due to a buyer ceasing contact. the carbs are in surprisingly good shape and all linkages function the trunk has typical stress cracks. there is some corrosion/crazing on the metal parts, but not too bad. locks work saddlebags have some corrosion as well but are still in good shape. the upper locks work, but the ones that attach the bag to the bike are frozen. i havent had a chance to work on them further. make me an offer, im tired of this stuff taking up garage space!!!
  23. Jeff: Do you have to remove the left fairing just to get the carbs out??? While changing out the valve cover gasket on 'Bertha' I decided to go ahead and clean the carbs..Number 1 carb is running some of the time, backfires and cuts in and out. I have disconnected all cables except one, used a wood lever to pull the carb set out of the manifolds and I am stuck trying to get the 4 pack off the bike...Any thoughts will be appreciated. Thanks, Tommy from Cary
  24. I sync'd my own carbs today. The Carbtune worked great and the information on this site is spot on!!! The left side was in sync with each other and so was the right. However the left was not in sync with the right.not far off but enough so as you would notice. Adjusted the screw and had even bars all of the way across. BIKE RUNS MUCH BETTER---EVEN GREAT. I LUV YOU GUYS!!!!!!!! If I can help anyone sync their carbs I will be glad to help.
  25. Has anyone ever tried to build a 4 into one intake and use an automotive single carb on these bikes? There would be plenty of room for it. Also does anyone know what the CFMs of all 4 carbs are collectively. Just a thought I have had,
