  1. Any body got them on their first gen? I rode a friends suzuki around a parking lot last week and she has a set on the bike. Really liked them, but cant find a part number for 89 VR. Will the "universal" number work?

    Camping Gear

This one? http://www.themotorbookstore.com/motorcycle-camping.html I got it as a gift a year or so ago. It's pretty good and not a thick reference guide, so it's pretty easy to find info quick in it. I'm not sure it's the only one, I think i saw a one or two more in the last Aerostitch catalog i got, but I couldn't find it for reference. I've found quite a bit of stuff that i needed and will fit on the bike at sportsmansguide.com also.
  3. Thanks guys, I had my doubts due to experience with other vehicles, but with the speed bleeders in I got A LOT more air from the front caliper and the metering valve. still seems like a little more than a one man job, even with my home made "i.v. drip" keeping the master cylinder filled , but went out for a good forty mile ride afterward and everything seems good. If I ever buy another bike the very first thing I'm doing is putting speed bleeders on it. Really appreciate the help.
  4. This is where I'm getting confused by the whole thing. My experience with air in the lines on anything is sponginess all the time. This starts out firm and goes soft after I haven't touched the brakes for a few miles. I've got the speed bleeders on the way, but they probably won't get here in time to save the camping trip this weekend that I have been planning all year. Hopefully I get lucky and they will help solve the problem, If it turns out to be the master cylinder, I'll have to wait a week for parts.
  5. Two weeks ago I replaced the rear tire and put progressive springs in the forks. Also replaced the rear brake pads while I had everything apart. To compress the pistons in the caliper, I removed the bolt from the rear master cylinder to relieve pressure. Cleaned all brake parts, and bled the line following the factory manual (rear caliper, front caliper, metering valve, in that order). Around town the brakes work fine, but if I don't use them for awhile out on the road get no action from the peddle. It is very soft and depresses quite a ways with no stopping action from the rear/front left. If I 'pump' the peddle it returns enough to stop the bike with just the peddle. The front right is having no problems. I'm not sure what to look at next. It seems to me that if they start out tight and work around town that it wouldn't be the master cylinder, and it can't be brake fade from a misaligned pad heating up because it affects both calipers. Any ideas?
  6. If the animal rights people give you any trouble just tell them you had to put the pooch in the side car because he couldn't keep up running along side with the leash tied to the footpeg.....
  7. Saw a black early 80's venture parked in front of a house on my way through the little town of Howard, NY around 2pm on the 6/11/08. Also saw a two tone blue later 80's model on rt 36 in Hornell, NY a week or so ago, forgot to ask about that one until now.
  8. I was thinking the same thing about the o-ringed piece....it must be there for a reason....but as far as being an air seal, don't think it could be...there is a hole in the top of it. I thought in the worst case it might be an extra guard against oil leak at the top....but again the hole is there, and after 20 miles or so, there doesn't seem to be any oil getting out I'm starting to think it may be something to do with the damping system and not as neccesary with the progressive springs. I didn't add any air after reassembly, but checked the class after my test run and it was reading 5 psi, probably road heat. Anybody ever try to contact Progressive about this?
  9. Look at the pic in mbrood's post. the original set up is the spring at the bottom of the pic. From left to right is the fork cap, "the aluminum o-ringed piece" i am trying to refer to and the factory spacer. The piece after the fork cap is hollow on the inside, but I couldn't get the pvc to fit into it. The washer /cups (shoulder washers?) that I think you are talking about are OEM and the "shoulder" fits in the end of the pvc nicely, so we used those between the pvc and the top of the spring. The fork cap is smooth on the bottom and shouldn't really affect the pvc piece, should it? Still, I'm just mostly confused by that piece second from the left in the picture.
  10. You're kidding, right? My dad and I together couldn't get the caps close enough to start with those aluminum o-ringed pieces in and couldn't find any further info on the subject at the time. i've put about 20 miles on it since the swap and it rides beautifully. Will leaving them out cause any future problems? The only other thing we could think of was to use them INSTEAD of the pvc spacers. I don't want to take the things apart again, but will if the consensus is to do something different than what we did. Also, the pvc pieces that came with my kit were closer to 3/4 inch and we opted not to cut them.
  11. How about the first one to reply to this post wins??? No? O.k. I don't have any ideas right now, but I'll let you know if I do.
  12. Sorry guys, in the interest of quality control i decided I should try them out on my scoot first. That double sided tape really clings, so i guess they have to stay where they are:hurts: I might have a couple of things left that i might not use. I think I prefer the look of the color keyed headlight surround over the chrome one, but I haven't really decided yet.
  13. Went to the local dealer to cancel an order today and my friend that works the parts counter told me to hang on while he finished a phone call. After he hangs up, he heads "out back" and returns with an armful of Ventureline goodies. Says they found 'em while doing inventory or something. All NOS in original packaging. Picked up the batch for a shade over 100 bucks....no extra charge for the dust. Once in awhile it pays to shop locally. http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u257/Dexx-gs/DSCF1064.jpg
  14. I used a Ram Mount set up to mount a camera on My suzuki GS several years ago and it worked great.
  15. I just ordered one of theses the other night: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16858617006 The price was right for a first gps and when I googled the model number, 90% or better of the reviews I found where pretty good. no bluetooth, but it has a headphone jack. I'll review it after I get it and play with it a bit if anyone is interested.
  16. I've never watched American Idol, but as far as guitar goes I play poorly enough to hopefully distract people from my awful singing at open mic nights. It's an expensive addiction tho'. My main guitar is a Wasburn acoustic-electric, I also have a Washburn hollow body electric, a no-name acoustic-electric that I use for my travel/camping guitar, and a Peavy 5 string bass. I have to keep talking myself out of buying my "next" guitar.
  17. Well, if you just gotta have something with an engine to tinker with, you could get one of these: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHYXrqoS08o[/ame]
  18. Not that it'll break the bank, but I couldn't find Vintage Electronics as mentioned in the article, but I do some business here and there with Newark.com, so I checked with them. Tbey have all the belts mentioned for less than $1.50 apiece. just my 2 cents, so to speak.
  19. I'm not a computer expert by any means, so I won't be using a lot of technical terms, but here's my two cents. I just got a smoking deal on a laptop that came loaded with Vista Home Premium, based on the advice of a friend who works IT at a local university. Here's what I do know. It has a 160gig hard drive and a 17 inch screen and I have all my music on it now and most of my backlog of digital pictures. I could never find anything on my old computer, but the search feature in vista is very helpful and easy to figure out. BUT....before I did anything with it, I had my the friend who recommended it go through and shut down the useless stuff that i'd heard about but didn't really understand when i was researching new computers. So far I really like it.
  20. Darn, mine didn't make either, have to be sure to submit more next year. Everything that did make it looks great tho'. Ordered a 12 month a couple of days ago, will probably order a 24 month in a week or two.
  21. I think I saw one of them, first gen, when i was visiting the GF in July. It was black an I saw it parked at Broadway at the Beach or Barefoot Landing, I don't remember which. I'm not in the position where I have to move immediately, but I'm hoping to figure some stuff out and maybe pull it off by next fall. I appreciate all the tips, gives me a place to start.
  22. Tennessee was discussed, but that would mean major changes for two people. I'm pretty convinced I can get by with my truck, my Venture, the computer and a guitar....I just don't know what to do with the rest of the stuff. Kit, the wages sound about comparable, But in NY the state takes about a third before I even see it, what's the income tax down there?
  23. most of my experience is in warehousing, inventory control, lower level logistics....but I'd be interested in other areas just for the variety of it. would like to avoid working two or more part-time/minimum wage jobs. Not even sure what the minimum wage is in SC. I have a friend that moved to NY a few years ago who did long distance phone interviews, but he was in IT and had a pretty decent electronic portfolio to send out. I'm still used to interviewing the old fashioned way. I've been checking into some companies that we do business with, but I don't have a concrete move date yet and don't want to waste people's time if something were to come up and i couldn't get there.
