  1. Farm supply? i would believe that in some larger places in certain states, but in Louisiana, the farm supplies I have been to don't go that far with inventory. so far, Leatherup is the top bidder on my purchase list. I wouldn't mind local, but day time is prime time, so that won't happen. I will be glad when i get some things out of the way. great advice so far. i thank everyone who has given me direction in chap quest 101. the knee boots are nice, but my personal taste says they seem to look better on female riders. Just me, though, to each his own. If i missed something so far, let me know as i have not plunked down any payments yet.
  2. I agree with flyinfool. hot chili waiting. no sense in stopping to warm up just to cool back down. just bundle up & have fun.
  3. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ the first step is - put the key in the bike's ignition the 12th step is -pull into the first Dairy Queen steps 2 thru 11 get you to step 12. and welcome.
  4. I am in the market for a pair of chaps. while i can make my own, i have too much going on right now and have some leather work sitting in wait, so that really won't happen. who makes a good set? i would like a thick leather, but would like the input of folks who have been there and done that. I have some riding pants, but i wind up with jeans, grab my riding jacket and helmit. so i am going to go the chap route. if they are unisex as they seem, i will probably get a pair for Deb as well. i need to go to bed, so i will check this thread tomorrow (today really). well, i will check it later - Ok? and, thanks for the input. I appreciate it.
  5. seems like the liquid type are most popular. being able to use the one you get is what ultimately matters.
  6. what a wonderful day, Wes. things like don't happen everyday and when they do, they are specail. Congratulations to all. let's hope the little one grows up on you scooter, eh?
  7. my every day idle is 950. close enough for sycning. there is a thread here that talks about an inexpensive digital tachometer. around 40 bux or so. i have a digital tach made by Yamaha. it was about 50 bux. having the motor warm is the key as i have learned. vacuum pressure is what the gauges read, so if the vacuum is weak or non normal, you sync will be off.
  8. i have a tachometer on my bike and i let the engine warm to normal to normal idle at about 950 RPm. after each adjustment, the throttle is bumped to really see the difference the adjustment made. as you make adjustments, the side you are working on either comes toward the same setting or moves away. if your adjustment moves away, adjust the other way. once that side is the same setting, repeat for the other side. what setting??? each carb will be where it is on the scale, you don't adjust to a setting. you make them match, by turning the adjustment screws. for example, once i hook up the gauge to my warm motor, the gauges will read 10 20 30 40. I have 4 gauges. the right side has one carb at 30 and one at 40. i adjust till the are the same, say each one adjusts till the both gauges read say 35. or where ever the become equal. repeat for the opposite side. now there is another screw so you equalize the left to the right using the same procedure.
  9. this gauge set has little valves that go in the line that "choke" down the vacuum signal. you have to use them, otherwise the needls jump so much you can't read or adjust the carbs very easily. once you have worked with it, you will say - ok, so i know what you mean now. the directions are a bit vague, so i put my "choke" valves an inch or so below the gauge.
  10. Ok, i found the thread that i read that lead me to get the set i have. here is the website with the vac gauges - http://www.sportingforless.com/servlet/the-50/Carburetor-Synchronizer-carb-sync/Detail here is the venture thread with the discussion. one of many should i say - http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42041&highlight=carb+sync+tool
  11. i have forgotten where i got mine. i remember posting that, though. do a search on carb sync. you will have to look at a lot of posts to find the thread where we talked about where to buy one. i think i paid about 45 bucks with shipping. they can run up to about 120 bucks. take some time to look around. i will do a quick search too.
  12. both types are accurate. both work off vacuum. i have used vacuum gauges since i learned to change oil. the liquid type are fine too, just what you prefer. going to a maint day in your area and having someone help you out on the first one is a super plus. i can read and then do. some folks can't. in a quick nutshell - you will hook up the vacuum hoses from the gauge of preference to the carbs with a warm motor. sync front and rear of each side. the sync the 2 sides. you will be adjusting idle as you are doing this also depending on how much the sync is off.
  13. what great stories. it is so interesting how things come together. like a holly wood movie where boy barely meets girl simply cause he stops for a soft drink instead of moving on with the buds. a peek in the barn, a friend who says "are u still looking for motorcycle?" AND a seller who says 1800 is too much, i'll take 1200. good deals and square deals. even when one of us pays a bit more, it's not really about money, but the time on the bike with our own mind or riding with those we love.
  14. sound like maybe a carb sync could be in order. wait till it comes back from the dealer. u will need a sync tool. there are a couple general types. gauge type or liquid type. i have the gauge type. it just depends on how a person thinks. use the search button on the top menu bar. you will get a lot of reading material to look over. i have just recently learned how to use it. once learned, always sync'd.
  15. what a great story. did you miss that thread? anyway - what's your story on how you got your bike? lets hear yours! here is how we wound up back on 2 wheels - - - It is sat morn last fall. i got Lady Massey and daughter massey setup for the community garage sale. i am sitting back in my chair in the shadow of the neighbors truck sipping my coffee. Deb comes up to me not long after i have yawned a couple times thinking "another day setup at a garage sale". she said "are you gonna look around?" I seez no cause i might find some junk i can't live without. she smiles and seez "did u see that motorcycle over there" I said "course not, i ain't looking for nuttin, besides, if it's nice and cheep, you know i will wind up with it!" She seez "Well, you better make your way over there an' check it out". i get up and she points it out. well i didn't know much about ventures at the time, but it was a nice white 04 RSV. sign on it says 6500 OBO. I knock on the door and the owner comes out and we chit chat bout this that an the other. we go over the bike. very clean & all maint done. purrs like a kitten with good tires. didnt know what it meant then, but no chirp or whine. i ask just OBO number he has in mind. well, it was a good bit lower. i said i will take it, but I don't have cash, so i ask if we can deal on monday after i call the bank. he said to let him know what the bank says. we part and i go tell Deb how it went. she has been watchin and while i did not see, there was a lady taking pictures on one phone and talking to hubby on another phone. deb said i may want to put down some holding cash or that lady is gonna swoop the bike out from under us. I go back over, knock on the door and the owner comes back out. I let him know i am solid at the bank and feel there will be no problem, but i want to seal the deal with a few hundred bucks to hold it. he looks around, sticks out his hand. i shake it and he says, that's good enough for me, its yours. not many folks work off hand shakes anymore. i still do and you just get that feelin sometimes. It's not even 7:30 AM & we are in his back yard at this point. we come around by the bike, i walk on across the street to meet Deb and the owner flips up the kick stand and starts to walk it back to his shop. the lady comes up to him and says " YOU SOLD IT ALREADY?????" the owner says "yes M'aam" she was sooo busy working details on the phone with hubby she did not take my presence seriously. anyway, the following tuesday, I had title and keys in hand and a grin a cheep carwash couldn't scrub off my face. my last bike was a used first year Kawa 1100 Ninja back in 1988 that i sold in 1990. what a difference in how motorcycles handle. i have had to learn how to ride all over again. yes, it was a steal of a deal.
  16. at the texas maint day, i learned about that radiator cap under the gas tank. i thought WTF?? and you have to baby feed coolant into it or spill all over the place. it is a real pain. i will save that one for a time when i have other stuff to do that requires the tank off.
  17. white lightning. that's a phrase my dad used often. our bike is a pearl white 04 RSV
  18. another thing i am anal about is core swap. i rarely come out even or ahead when i do a core swap. If i were to go with their mod, i would send my seat, have my seat done and get my seat back. therefore i have original equipment that has been worked on. that's just me. I try to stay as original as possible when possible.
  19. I have the pillow top seat for both rider and passenger. if my seat were lowered by 3 inches, i would be sitting on the bracket. I would need to see how the do their magic before i would commit that kind of money to a seat mod. I know folks here rave about Mr. R Bultler's seat magic, i would look into that before these folks. our 04 RSV is already lowered rear and front, so my 27" inseam still has both feet flat on the ground (while sitting on the scooter). therefore i need no seat mod.
  20. our 04 RSV does not have whine or chirp at any speed, gear or RPM. just that nice motorcycle engine sound and the rumble from the pipes. it is not for sale, in part or whole. it has just over 23,ooo miles on it.
  21. If your camera hooks up to your computer, move the pics to the computer. then upload from there. you can email the pics to your work, save them to the work pc and then upload from there. many possibilities.
  22. it depends on where your pictures are stored. i have an SD disk in my camera. i pull the chip out and put it in my chip reader of my laptop and move them to a USB flash drive if i am gonna go about with them (like to work). then i tell this site to look at either my SD card on the laptop or the usb flash drive.
  23. i sent a PM to squidley.
  24. my dad currently live outside portland, Or. i hope to make a trip there from here in louisiana and back. we will see.
  25. what a great trip. i lived in northern Ca when i was a kid & my dad was stationed in the area. jus' beautiful driving and this time of year should be great. have a good time, take pics so you can post when u get bak.
