  1. I envy all of you ,and thanks for the lead story. My bride of 44 years wont get on the bike. I stopped trying to get her to ride a long time ago. MAYBE SOMEDAY Bill P
  2. Sounds like a great trip . I wish I could have met up with you .. Too many things to do ;;; not enough time. Bill P
  3. Look at your braking habits.. Are you a pedal braker . This puts a lot of stress on the rear tire . It has to accelerate take turning forces and if you call on it to do most of the stopping you are going to get poor mileage.. Possible you are getting bad tires ,but likely not so. That poor of mileage says ;;;;;;; no it screams something is wrong. either your riding style or pressure or SOMETHING!!!! Find out what and correct it . Just my 1 cents worth Bill P
  4. The epoxy kits work fine as long as you follow the directions on preparing the floor. Almost 10 years on mine.. One problem the kit I used has these small chips to sprinkle to make the floor nonslip and to add color. They do just that ,,,,, BUT when you drop something small it is the devil to find it. I build model airplanes and I cant tell you how much time I have spent on my hands and knees. Bill P
  5. Glad you are back home. Will have to get together soon. Bill P
  6. Before I start I ride a 88 VR with linked brakes! The rear brake on ( most bikes ) have put down at least 6 riders I personally know in the last 2 years! And I don't know that many riders.I love my linked brakes and have asked another forums why would anyone want to delink them. Never have I received a reasonable answer. Think about the position of the brake pedal on the RSV and Many other bikes . You hit the brake and what happens to your body and your right foot. Inertia makes it go forward, and forward pushes harder on the pedal making the problem even worse. Its hard to regulate the pressure when you are being moved forward. If you don't believe you are thrown forward just ask your rider why is his ,or her helmet banging on yours. When there is time to think about it all may be well,,,,,, but in an emergency or a surprise situation ,you stab the brake and the forward force causes you to push harder than you really wanted to.. Trouble with a capitol T.. The brake pedal on a 1st gen you have to push the pedal down not forward, the weight shift does not cause you to apply more pressure. Someone in a above post says it all. Don't use the rear brake unless you are sure of what you are doing! Practice is the only answer !!!!!!! Practice stopping in all conditions , wet , dry , on leaves , in gravel ,and on sandy pavement. Use that front brake right up to walking speed. Sure it is best to use both all the time but the rear should NEVER be used as your main , and only stopping tool. I fear we have too many cage drivers who only know how to use the foot brake to stop .. Yea this works when all is well and the road it clean , but I guarantee you it will lock if it is improperly used , and YOU will pay the price. If you do lock it at speed by all means don't release it ,,,, you will HIGH SIDE, and my friends this is as bad as it gets. To all of my friend riding RSV s use the front brake!! It makes me sick to hear about the mishaps . Take the time to read the safety forums on almost every states web sites or just google MOTORCYCLE SAFETY.. Yea the answer is ABS, but there are thousands of bikes out there with this condition , so we have to learn to live with it. Be safe Bill P
  7. the description sounds like it is a solid product. Not going to be very good in a jacket.. I use the heating pad from auto seat covers . when a car is wrecked , and the side airbag deploys they must replace the seat cover . In the cover of most high line cars is a heating pad. Hook it to 12 volts and instant warmth. No need to regulate ,hook it thru a fuse and enjoy. Stop at all the body shops in your town and ask to speak to the technician who does the mechanical work, ask him if he will save you a few covers. The leather is also very useful for making other things, fringe and grip covers and fork tube protectors. Bill P P S I give 10 .00 for each seat cover ; works for me!
  8. Good read thanks! Bill P
  9. On the far west side of San Antonio . At the start of the hill country. The house is on a converted ranch ( ie the rancher went broke and sub divided it)? The original ranch house is still nearby, and so are all the wonderful critters and creatures. I come from Chicago ,so the last 11 years has been fun living out in the sticks. I know many of you are lucky enough to have always lived out of town ,but for me the last years have been the best! I can ride almost anytime I choose, and the beautiful hill country is at my doorstep. Bill P
  10. Look me up when you get home. Have a great trip. Your bike must be a twin to mine.. 88 VR cream and gold. We will see. Ride this area all the time and have never seen one like it. I hope you are taking the south route, a 10 degree temp difference could make all the difference. Bill P
  11. How does a low particle count mean the filter is good. Filters are supposed to trap particles ,, aren't they? Just asking! Bill P
  12. Yes a good time was had by all!:322:Was great meeting up with Reciel and yourself! The trip home was uneventful. Rich's radio was dead , and that was the only problem we encountered in over 1500 miles of riding. The weather held up all weekend. I will try to post some pic tonight. Gary and Lowell rode straight thru to home Sunday, they arrived safe around 7:30 pm. We stopped in Langtry to check out the Judge Roy Bean Welcome Center again. We mostly stop to see what is blooming in the garden. They have a really nice garden center with all native plants ,and walking trails. And its a good place to stretch your legs and move around. I'm off to work for now. Bill P
  13. Any auto parts store sells drain catcher containers. They are worth the one time investment. They are either round or rectangle and have a side drain with a cap. They work fine. Bill P
  14. Popeye you don't need a shop to tell which Cly is not firing. Long nose pliers will allow you to pull off 1 Cly at a time. when you pull off the dead one there will be no change in the sound of the engine. Pull of a live one and you will hear it plane as day. The engine will at least shake and possibly die. Find out how many are dead. do everything in the above posts, all the info above IS correct. If you have both or one rear Cly dead it may be the ign control unit. But before you buy a new one for 500.00 put the old one in your oven at 150 degrees. Thats just barley warm by oven standards. leave it for a few hrs then install it again. Many have found moisture has entered the unit and caused problems. . The big clue is it was out in the rain. Do you have a shop manual, and are you able to do the testing necessary? Most of the mechanics now will charge you many hours to just get to the control unit. What you basically have to do is test everything up to the control unit and if all else is good replace the control unit. Go to the tech section for more info on test procedures. Let us know how this works out. Bill P

  16. You do know we all feel bad about you mishap. Our prayers go your way ,and keep us posted on how things are healing. I keep trying to preach to all my riding friends to wear their gear. Let us know how the leg is healing. Bill p
  17. MDHASSUN: Welcome and if you are coming west to the hill country let me know . Maybe we can get together. I live on the west side of San Antonio, and ride all year in this beautiful area. Bill P:)
  18. Good luck finding anyone who will work on our old bikes. You are I hope :willing to learn how to do your maintenance. This is the best way to get it done right. I have to say you should not own an older bike or older car unless you are willing to put the time necessary into keeping it running.I see post here and on other sites where folks complain about shops, and technicians ability to work on old bikes . Well they are in the business of selling bikes not keeping your old one running. There is no up side to training technicians in repairing old bikes. The best thing IMHO is to learn how to do it YOURSELF,all the little things, you will feel much better and more satisfied with the end result. If you have to pay to have everything done for you ;;;; you better have a fat wallet, and be willing to have the bike down ,, in the shop most of the time. THATS HOW THEY SELL NEW BIKES. Which is a good thing for most riders who are mechanical challenged. Bill P
  19. Mine did just that . Turned out to be the ignition module or brain. Ck each cyl for spark. And as you did ck each pipe for heat. Then ck the pick up coils... I hope you have a service manual, it is very easy with an ohm meter. I then switched coils to be sure the coils were not the problem...... Everything checked so I call buckeye performance ,and ordered a ign unit. Bike now runs perfect. :cool10:I found a bunch of corrosion in the plug to the ign unit, this maybe what caused the failure. I well coated the plug in the new unit with corrosion preventative grease. Good luck Bill P
