96 Royal Tranny Issue
gunkylump replied to marinakorp's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
The same thing happened to my 96 a few years back....let me see, that would be six years ago now. Up here it was just under $400 to get it done. Two of the wishbones fell off...took a while to find one of them, the other was easy. Has run just fine ever since. gunk:banana: -

RSV won't run without choke
gunkylump replied to a topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Nice looking bike in your pic.....any snow up over there yet in the Capitol? Get a can of seafoam...throw about 75 per cent in the gas tank. Let it sit overnight, with the petcock open. Start the bike up, let it run long enough to warm up real good, then shut it down if you have to run it with the choke on, and let it sit overnight again. See if that works for you before you start draining the carbs, it might be all it needs. gunk:Laugh: p.s. I'm just a lazy, half @ssed backyard mechanic.....I like the path of least resistance. Hope it does the trick for you. -

Boss Man: I don't know where you find the time or energy, but man, I'm sure glad that you're here, and ever vigilant! I recognize your struggle, and I feel for you. And I don't have a quick and easy answer for what you're facing right now. But....I agree with you entirely, I don't want to be faced with all kinds of spam and crap thrown at me, not only in the classifieds, but anywhere on this great site. I think, at the end of the day, it is going to be a personal choice/decision made by you. And if you are really struggling with it, you have other resources to discuss it with, ie Squidley and the other monitors, whom you obviously trust. Keep up the GREAT work that you do for us.....I don't think that a lot of us realize/understand the amount of time and effort that you put into this site....ultimately on OUR behalf. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. gunk:shock3:

New guy looking at possibly getting a Venture.
gunkylump replied to Humbucker's topic in Watering Hole
The best advice I can give you is to get on one and try it out, see how it fits you and your wife. It feels a tad top heavy at first....but that quickly goes away. There are no vibrations at the handlebars when you drive it like a V-4 wants to/should be ridden...don't be afraid to rev it, it's very much unlike a twin. Give it the revs, it's electronically limited, so don't worry about the motor. The brakes work fine for me, I'm on my second royal star, and both have over 100,000 k's on them. The first is a 96 plain jane royal star, not a venture. Carbs are just that, carbs. You can work on them yourself if need be, there is information here up the wazooh on how, when, and why. Keep them clean, and you'll have no issues. Seafoam works wonders. Vibrations in the floorboards? Non-existent pretty much, once again, keep the revs up. In my humble opinion, this is the most bang for the buck....dollar for dollar, the best deal out there on a fully dressed touring model bike. All kinds of accessories available, good on fuel, it actually looks like a bike, and it's pretty much bullet proof. Some of them do have a whine to them because of the square cut gears...but there are fixes for most of them as well...(new clutch basket, can be had under warranty) That's my two cents..... gunk:smile5: -
I was at our local Timmie's this afternoon getting a coffee(I'm on midnites) and was chatting with a couple of guys, one with a Yammie Raider, the other a Harley something or other, when a Triumph T3 came rolling in. I was sitting on the curb..so I had a real good look at this monster. Folks say our Ventures are a big bike...but sitting there looking at that monster, visualizing a full fairing, lowers and rear trunk set me to thinking that this T3 is freakin' huge. Great looking ride, jet black, lots of factory chrome....nice ride! Low center of gravity according to the owner, and comfy. Sure is a big machine, I like it, but I like my V-4 just that much better. gunk:smile5:

Dave and Kathy: Thanks so much for the "gifts" from Texas! These will give us some instant memories as we walk throughout the house doing odds and ends and whatever else we all do in a house! I know we'll be back one of these days! gunk and the teach:smile5:

Would you have a part # or an internet connection to that cable? I went to the J+M site, but couldn't find the cable you're referring to. gunk

I e-mailed Edsets and this is the reply I got: Our universal adapter, 5-5 pin model EA-55 is what you want. They are under Universal Adapters on our main page at EdSets.com. Ed Thanks for all the replies and insights, now I know what I need! gunk:big-grin-emoticon:

Beth and I completed a two week vacation on the bike a couple of weeks back. Still getting things put away and all that....it's boat loading season at work so not much time off to get things done. The total kilometerage....how's that for a word? on the Venture odometer was 8,011 kilometers. The total on the zumo 550 that was on for every foot of the trip was 6,853.6. Now that's a difference of 1,157 kilometers, or 723 miles. WOW! Thought I'd post this up....that's a pretty significant difference between the two. Interesting food for thought. gunk:scratchchin:

Sweet Monty! Have fun with your Dad and his new wheels. Hoping we can get down that way soon and see it close up. gunk:thumbsup2:

Hang in there Beer.....it's a tough one to take for sure. The father is going to have it a lot rougher. Kudos to you for stopping and assisting....as you said, a lot of people just kept on going. I shudder to think of what could have occurred at the scene had you not stopped and assisted as you did. Focus on the good that you did tonight my friend, and try to dismiss the rest. My thoughts are with you and the good that you did tonight. gunk

We would need this one? Earplug Headset Adapter, 5-pin DIN Earplug Headset Adapter, 5-pin DIN, for Gold Wing and other 5-pin DIN intercom systems, allows earplug speakers to be worn along with a standard helmet headset. gunk:banana:
-
Beth and I both have J+M headsets for our half helmets. I forget the model #, but they install by slipping them in between the liner and the shell of the helmet. This year we installed the mic-mutes, and I love them. We have the show krome windshield on the bike, so Beth experiences quite a bit of buffeting and wind noise. The speakers cover our ears very well, and we both experience some heat issues and are generally not happy with the speaker quality. So, to get to my question... Can I adapt a set of ear buds to replace the speakers? If so...how do I do it? By doing so, we can rid ourselves of the heat issue in the warm weather...(we really noticed it on our last vacation ride to Texas), and improve the sound quality at the same time. I'm a novice at this type of retro fitting...so some very plain instructions would really be appreciated. Thanks in advance. gunk:hurts:

Beth and I had made plans to attend, but we now have two boats coming in to load....so I'll be working all weekend. There's good and bad in that....the money is nice, but it would be nice to have a weekend off as well. I'm on midnites this week and next, so throw the weekend in with it, and that's 12 midnites in a row.....I'm NOT a midnite type person. Don't sleep worth a dang, by the end of next week I'll be as ornery as a bear with a backside full of rocksalt! Oh well, I'll have next weekend off for sure, I've put in for a vacation do so that I can have our Canadian Thanksgiving off. gunk
