  1. Well...nobody is in trouble at this time. Like I said, that is a step that I really don't want to take and I won't unless it comes down to the last choice. If I DO take that step, those of you who are already registered will not be affected, only new registrations. I made a couple of changes this morning that should go a long way in eliminating the problem. We'll see how it works out. There is one other option also but it requires more work on my part. That would be that any new registrations must be manually approved by me before they actually get access to the site. That would me me checking the address, running the IP Address through Whois.org to find out where it originates from and then me making a judgment as to whether or not it is a spammer or not. Most of the spams that I see here are coming from the RIPE network.
  2. Yes, it is a real email address. It was not me who made that statement. What I said was that gmail, yahoo, etc. are FREE email services. Because they are free, most spammers...at least ALL the spammers that have logged in here have used them. They have no problem signing up for a free email service, spamming the forums with links to cell phones, viagra, etc. and then just canceling or never checking that free account again. MANY forums have stopped allowing registrations from those free services. Their is also no danger of having their primary email addresses shut town by their providers when they use gmail and yahoo for their spam. I don't know what you mean by many people not having any other email address. I would say that there are VERY few who do not. If you have Internet service then you have an email address available to you. The only people I know of who may not have are those who have no service at all and login from a public computer at a library or something. I'm not doubting what you say but only saying that your experience does not parallel what I see here. I've never, so far, been spammed by anybody using a legit email address from their Internet Service Provider. Every single one has come from a free email service with about 95% of those coming from gmail accounts.
  3. Yea, every spammer we have had over the past 6 months has used a gmail address. I'm close to adding gmail to the banned email list. There is no reason for a person to not use their real email address here as the email addresses are NOT made public even to other members unless by members choice. There are several ways to try and thwart the spammers. I had already tried your suggestion and it worked for a while. Then the spammers found a way to program the bots using OCR to crack that. I then went to a question and answer type verification. It worked OK for a while but lately they are getting around it also. Now I've implemented a DOUBLE word image and a random question system. I think it will work for a while but eventually they will find a way to defeat those also. It's just a never ending battle.
  4. OK folks, it seems that the spam bots have found a way to get past the human verification manager in the registration process. I have implemented a new system which should stop it for now. We had several spammers join up over the past few days and I have caught them all fairly quickly. They have been deleted and banned but it's a never ending battle. The new system should pretty much solve the problem for now but it unfortunately makes it a bit more time consuming to register. I apologize now for making it so difficult for any new members who are joining up. If this doesn't stop the bots...the next step is one that I really don't want to take but it may eventually become necessary. That is to prevent anybody from joining up who is using one of the free email services. Almost 100% of the spammers are using accounts from Yahoo, GMail, etc. If the steps I have taken do not stop the spammers then I will simply have to require that people use a real email address and NOT one of the free services. The good news is that I think I can do it while allowing our existing members to continue using such emails but they will not be allowed for any new members who try to register.
  5. Yea...you tell em Dan. I loved the weather that you arranged for ME this week. I got back home a few minutes ago....we are supposed to get some of that ice tonight. By the way, it was great seeing you.
  6. Are you associated with that dealership?
  7. Yes, that is the correct date and you probably saw it on the home page in the write up about the club.
  8. Well...you were number 387 to sign up after the crash. Anybody can tell by going to their profile. The address bar in your browser will look something like this: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/member.php?u=1 That is mine. The number at the end of that line is the order that you signed up in. Yours says u=387
  9. Yes, July 2004. WOW...we will be five years old in '09. Doesn't seem like it's been that long.
  10. Beautiful work on the bow. I've shot a little bit but not much. When I was a kid, I lived two doors down from a guy named Hardy Ward. He was World Outdoor Archery Champion in 1969. There was an elementary school about a half block away and I used to watch him practice there in the afternoons. It was amazing to watch him shoot.
  11. Well after the crash, you were number 162 to sign up again.
  12. You can go to the members list and click and then click on "join date" and it will sort the list according to the date that people joined. As Margaret said though, it doesn't really mean anything due to the crash after which everybody had to re-register. I really don't remember who the first 10 original members were. Except for one.....ME.....I was NUMBER ONE!
  13. I honestly don't know what all I've eaten. All the usual things in the USA including rattlesnake, possum, squirrel brains, alligator, crawdad, etc. China: Snake Soup Hong Kong: Roast Pigeon Thailand: soup with fish guts, chicken intestines, who knows what else. Chicken feet off a road side stand. Many things that I just stopped asking what it was. In China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Mexico and a few other places, I finally just decided that it was sometimes best to stop asking and just go along with the locals.
  14. All done. I like it.
  15. Yes, that is something that you need to do. Has nothing to do with removing the wheel but needs to be done while the wheel is off. Here you go. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=13263
  16. Here you go: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=515
  17. Sorry, I can't help on on the Royal Star. I put the Flanders bars on my RSV and it wasn't too difficult. Some folks have done it without replacing the brake, clutch and throttle lines and some have reported that they are too tight. I wanted the SS lines anyway so went with some that were 2" longer. On the RSV, you have to drill a hole on the throttle side to match with the protrusion on the housing that keeps it from rotating, probably the same on the Royal Star but I'm not sure.
  18. You folks can argue all day and those of you who think that the Metzlers are good tires then you have made your decision and that is your right. For those of who who are unsure though, LISTEN to V7Goose. They are NOT good tires for our bikes. There have been MANY reports of failures on our bikes. Yes, there have been failures on other brands too but nothing near the number of reports that we get on the Metzlers. The under inflation argument just doesn't fly with me. You would have to convince me that only those who use Metzler tires are ever guilty of running their tires under inflated and since many of those who have experience failures have run other brands before and after then they ONLY run the Metzlers under inflated. Yes, it is important that we watch the air pressure of our tires but it's pretty pathetic that these particular tires come apart if the pressure isn't kept that high. Bottom line. They are crappy tires and Metzler should be sued for continuing to sell them and blame the riders. Sorry folks but these are my opinions and the opinions of many who have experience with these tires. If you are convinced in your own mind that they are good tires then by all means, do what you think is best but for those of you who are unsure, please don't buy or use them. There are several very good tires on the market for our bike. Avon, Michelin, Dunlop....there is no reason to take a chance.
  19. No WAY is that me. I've NEVER done that....I mean...allowed myself to be caught on video.
  20. Actually, I had him working on some things for a new venturerider shirt some time ago. I kind of let it fall through the cracks though and need to pick it up again. Here are some preliminary sketches that he had done for me.
  21. My fault...I should have looked a the name of the city closer when he emailed me. Sorry about that.
  22. I may have typed it wrong.
  23. You don't have to buy songs. I've used my standard IPOD for several years and have over 100 complete CDs on it. I just copied my CDs to the Ipod. I've probably not bought over a half dozen songs from Itunes.
  24. Well I'm certainly not looking for a first gen but if I were....the white '88 would be the one.
  25. OK folks, I am looking for help/suggestions here. As most of you know, Darrell Steuer (Maddabber) was the winner of the Bushtec trailer at this years VentureRider International Rally. Most of you also know that Darrell is dealing with some serious health issues at this time and I hope you are all praying for him. Last week, I drove down to Jacksboro, TN to the Bushtec factory and picked up his trailer for him and now have it at my house here in Oberlin, OH. I told Darrell that I would store it for him until he is able to get it and I have absolutely no problem doing that but it would be great if we could get it to him. So, do we have enough members between here and London, Ontario, Canada to pull this off? I also need information on getting it across the border. All the paperwork for the trailer was mailed to Darrell and I'm sure he will send it to us if we need it but what do we need and what is it going to cost to get it across the border? Your suggestions are welcome and needed. Thanks.
