  1. Sorry if I have confused anyone. I havent taken anything apart. I am trying to do the underneath sneak adjustment as it is shown in Freebirds tech article. I cant seem to get the top nut loose so I can do the adjustment below. Pic attached. Article short cut attached. Thanks for the help. Jim http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=511
  2. Hi Freebird: Maybe I am missing something. I didnt see a tab. I was trying to loosen the chrome nut. So I could then tighten the ring below. I attached the pic from your tech article. JR
  3. I need more advise. I decided to tighten the steering head bearing a bit today. I tried to loosen the top nut but could get it to budge. How hard should it be to move this? Do I need to use a cheater to break it free? I dont want to break anything. Thanks JR
  4. Has anyone installed speedbleeders in place of the OEM bleeders? Website below. If so have they worked well or are they not worth the money? I plan on changing the brake fluid and clutch fluid over the next few months and it looks like these things would make it very easy for this time and in the future. JR http://www.speedbleeder.com/
  5. Thanks for all the replies. Being careful and using elbow greese was what I was planning on doing but hoped someone had a magic solution. Jim
  6. I have my bike in my shop now and am in the process of giving it a good cleaning. I'm wondering what everyone uses to clean all of the parts that are hidden under the fairings/seat and side covers. There is a lot of dust and dirt in there. I blew out what I could with compressed air. I am reluctant to spray any water in these areas as it is mostly electrical stuff. Maybe I should just leave it alone. Ideas? Thanks JR
  7. I'm hoping someoene has an opinion. I have my 2007 venture in my garage and have been going over it so it is ready when the snow finally goes away. There are 4 hoses which appear to be vent hoses exiting just left of the rear shock pointing to the ground. The two that are cut at an angle have an oily residue coming out of them. Is this normal???. I followed the one hose up and it goes under the gas tank. I can take off the tank and follow it but wondered if the residue is in fact normal. The bike ran fine when I put it away. As always any opinions or help is always appreciated. Thanks Jim
  8. We call ours the "Road sofa". Thats what my son started calling it when we first got it because of all the features it had and the padded seat. The name stuck.
  9. I removed one of my passing lamps. It is a sealed unit. Wagner #4449, 12.8 volt, 30 watt. I looked on line and have not been able to locate one in amber. I'm not even sure they make it. Does anyone know of a supplier? JR
  10. Thanks for the info. The OEM are sealed beams. I looked up Wagner amber sealed beams and it appears they make them. Now it is just a question whether they will fit and what wattage rating they are. I will have to find out the rating of the OEM's. Does anyone know what the OEM passing lights are rated at? I do not want to overload anything. I appreciate the help. JR
  11. When riding I have seen a couple of Harley electra glides with yellow passing lights. They really stood out and I could see them coming much better than the standard passing light. Cant help but think it would help with being noticed. Does anyone know whether you can get yellow units that will replace the stock Yamaha passing light? Thanks JR
  12. May be stating the obvious but is the volume turned up on the GPS for the MP3. There is a seperate volume for the MP3 player on the Garmin. JR
  13. To get the gps to talk thru the speakers or headset you plug a patch cord from the aux out on the gps to the aux in by the tape recorder on the bike. You can get the cord from radio shack. You then select Aux on your radio controller and it will talk to you thru the speakers or headset depending on which one you have selected. You may have to adjust the volume on the GPS to what works best for you. Hope that helps. JR
  14. Good news. I reset to factory settings and Jill is now talking away like crazy. Thank to everyone who weighed in and helped. There is alot to learn about this Zumo. It sure is handy though as it led us right to our hotel in the pouring rain. There is no way the navigator behind me could ever have read a map with the way it was coming down. JR
  15. Others may weigh in on this but here is my opinion. I did the same this to my bike a few monthes ago and oil does run out of the area on the pumpkin where the driveshaft plugs in. I to had a puddle when it was sitting on the bench. There is a small hole there if you look closely that is supposed to let a small amount of gear oil into the rear spline area of the driveshaft lubing those splines. The seal holds keeps oil from migrating out and dust and dirt from getting in. I still put moly on both ends of the shaft as most on this site recommended it. I would monitor the area for leaks and watch your gear oil level as your seal may leak from being repaired. Hope this helps. JR
  16. Thanks for the input. I am using American English-Jill, which says it is TTS. But still no street names are said. I'll keep trying tomorrow. P.S. Buddy Rich, the cable is installed and so far so good. Works like a charm. Thanks. JR
  17. Thanks for the info Freebird. I am using American English Jill as well and no go.
  18. I was hoping for some some help from the Zumo crowd. We are on our first trip with our Zumo 550 and realized today that it is not saying the street name when giving directions. It simply says turn right/left in so many miles/feet. I thought it was supposed to say the street names and beleive it actually did when I first got it. I have done an update to get the 2010 software. Did I loose this function when I did the update or is there a setting I can change. I have been all through this thing and cant find how to change a setting to restore this function. Does it exist? JR
  19. I noticed since I got my 07 Venture out this year that I have what seems to be an exhaust smell in the driver's area from time to time. My wife does not notice it at all in the passengers seat. So today I checked a few things out and here is what I found. I discovered I have small exhaust leaks at both of the "Y" crimped connections. I removed the tank and discovered oil seepage around the left front carb boot where it connects to the air box. Needless to say there shouldnt be oil up there. I removed the air box and checked inside and found oil in the air box. It appears to have been sucked in from the crankcase vent. There was more on the left side than on the right. I cleaned everything up and put it back together. I remembered reading on this site about what happens if the engine oil level is to high. Mine was pretty much at the top mark so I drained a bit of oil out until it was at mid level. I have not had a chance for a test ride yet as it has been pouring rain all day I run two cans of seafoam thru each year at the beginning and end of season The carbs are in sync All of this leads to a few questions which I am hoping someone can help with. Could the oil level be what caused the oil in the airbox or do I have another problem? Would the oil being sucked in also give me the exhaust smell I have been experiencing? It sounds like leaking "Y" connections are quite common as they are crimped and not welded. Would they cause the exhaust smell? Should I be after Yamaha to replace them or will the new ones be any better? Because some oil could has been sucked in should I clean the carbs somehow. I thought about dumping some seafoam into the intake of each carb and let it work its way thru. Is that a good idea? Lots of questions I know. Thanks in advance for any and all advise. Jim
  20. I was hoping someone could answer my questions about XM reception in Canada. I am about to purchase a Zumo 550 from Radioworld in Toronto. I will likely get the XM puck as well so I can have satelite radio and XM weather. Has anyone had experience with Radioworld? There price seems fair and they have everthing I need in stock. Does anyone have the XM weather/traffic option in Canada? Does it meet your expectations and work in Canada? Jim
  21. I purchased a Kuryakyn battery/volt meter and hope to install it this week on top of the triple tree emblem. Has anyone else put one of these on. Where do you tie in electrically so as to get as accurate a reading as possible? Thanks Jim
  22. I was hoping for some suggestions on where I could pick up a "Trailer Isolation Relay" in Canada. I need to wire up my Aluma MCT trailer and thought it would be wise to use a relay kit to protect the bikes wiring. I was also wondering how many actually use a relay kit. Is it really necessary or will the Venture handle the trailers LED lights without overloading anything. Thanks Jim
  23. Thanks for the answer pegscraper. I will put it back on the right side. :happy34:Jim
  24. I removed the front wheel and brake rotors to send it out for a tire replacement. I didnt keep track of which side the chrome rotor covers came off of. I now discovered that one is weighted and the other isn't. Which side does the weighted one go on? I looked on South Seatle Yamahas part site and it appears to me it is the right hand side. Is this rught? What is the weight for anyways? As usual any and all help is greatly appreciated. Jim
