1. My girlfriend loves to ride with me but afterwords it is always a pain for her to get all those tangles out of her wind blown hair. Shes tried bandanas but can't seem to keep them from falling off for some reason. Her hair is short enough that she can't really get it all in a pony tail and she pins the rest down with bobby pins but they seem to fall out too. So my question is, what do you girls wear on your heads when riding? I know the obvious thing would be for her to just wear a helmet but she doesn't like wearing it and I don't blame her. I might try buying her a cute pink one or something. Maybe that will help??
2. I bought an expensive Metzler tire for my rear end. It has about 1500 miles on it. I noticed it has some weird wear on the ends of the tread patterns that are unique to this tire... Maybe it is a design flaw. I have run it with the reccommended 32 lbs the whole time.... Thanks!
3. I asked the question on the Star site if there were any problems being a member of another orginization and a star member. The answers ranged from no problem, to no problem as long as we don't wear the other org. patch or show thier colors, to it doesn't matter Venture Riders and Venturers are just forum sites they're not Orginizations with real members. My wife and I are not renewing our membership with star because of this. We discussed it and decided we didn't want somebody else telling what we can wear, how to wear it, and so on.We have an venturers decal on our trunk, and in the next couple weeks will order the Venture Rider decal to go there also. We hate to be like this as we have made a few friends at Star but if it has to be then....Have talked to a couple of folks here and have enjoyed the site, and the knowledge of some of the members. I guess what I'm getting at is, we have found a new home. Hope ya'll don't mind. We'll try not to get to rowdy!!!!!:confused24:
4. I put a new set of tires on my 02 midnight 5000 k ago rear is now down to the wear bars, we are doubled up 90% of the time, I know the steering head bearings need to be changed. Could this have caused the quick wear?
5. just wondering if some of the internal components can wear enough for my 2000 model to seem like its getting alot louder........maybe its just me and old age...lol......any advice would be appreciated....thanks
6. I just bought a 1999 Venture and My wife and I wear shorty helments any recommendations on a brand to use.

Ear Plugs

Recently, I've been thinking about wearing ear plugs. No, not at the dinner table (although at times that might be a good option!!) but whilst riding. Does anyone here wear any and if so - in your opinion - what's the best type?
8. I did my rear brake pads today, again it got down to just about metal on metal wear while out on the last road trip.. The inside pad wears out much sooner than the outer pad and seems to wear even more at the back of the pad.. this is where the metal on metal wear was just about ready to start.. I looked at the disc carefully and am not sure if mine is pooched or if this is the way it is supposed to be where as the outer most edge of the disk is thicker than the surface where the pads contact.. In other words, if I were to tighten down a C-Clamp half down the contact surface of the disc, I would not be able to slide if up and off as there is a 'shoulder' at the outer most edge.. Is it possible that previous pads might have ground down into the disc thus making it 'unserviceable'? Are new discs expensive? Are there better alternatives? Can the existing ones be dressed or cleaned up? On the same note, if your discs are 'glazed' from the pads, how do you un-glaze them? Cheers!
9. The new set of Michelin Commanders I put on the bike are impressive. The bike handles soooooo much better! I don't believe I will ever put a set of Dunlops on a bike ever again. Today I rolled over 150 miles on the new tires and the little nubs are STILL in place on both of the tires...... Now all I gotta do is dial in the correct tire pressure to maximize the wear on these tires. Running 35psi on both tires now. Sidewalls on both tires say 41 psi max as taken cold. My guess is if I run them at max sidewall pressure that pressure will be higher than 41 psi when the tires heat up and that puts them in a over-pressure state which would quickly wear out the center of the tires. Any thoughts about this guys? Boomer.......who's gonna run the twisties pretty hard this weekend for sure......and leaving the sipping whiskey at home too.
10. I have a new-to-me 2002 Midnight Venture. I have noticed a slight pull to one side - not so bad that the bike would run off the road without steering input, but noticible all the time. It is not related to road crown, uneven loading of the bike or rider position (I checked). This is apparent at all speeds. Tires are Metzelers and are about half gone. Reasonably normal wear pattern with no evident cupping. I am concerned that I may have an alignment issue but I have no idea how to determine this on the Venture or how to fix it if there is a problem. I bought the bike used from a Yamaha dealer (last week) with 36,000 km (22,500 mi) on the clock. As far as I know, the bike has never been involved in a significant accident although there is evidence (bent engine guard and minor scratches) that it had been dropped at some point. I should mention that this is the exact behavior I have experienced on my Roadstar when a rear wheel was installed and not lined up perfectly. On that bike a simple loosening of the axle and a tweak to the adjusters fixed it right up. Hopefully, we are dealing with some sort of adjustment rather than something twisted out of alignment!! Also, when checking for hands-off "behavior", I experienced some significant oscillation in the handlebars. Not violent or out of control but enough that I had to grab them. This was at about 30 mph. Road was fairly rough so this might have been what started it. I don't feel major/abnormal vibration or oscillation in the bars during normal riding at any speed. Someone suggested that this might be loose steering head bearings and I will check that out - winter project. For the sake of safety and the potential for excess tire wear, I would like to resolve this ASAP. I would welcome your suggestions. Thanks Ross
11. Started to put my bike back together today and got a little surprise. I had not bothered to clean the drive shaft or differential when I removed it several weeks ago because I didn’t expect anything to be wrong with them after only 12,000 miles with no apparent symtoms. Cleaned the drive shaft with brake cleaner, scrubbed it good with scotch-brite, hit it with brake cleaner again, and blew it off with the air gun. Got out the magnifying glass and found it to be a piece of junk. I have some experience in metallurgy and expected to see a wear pattern on the teeth, not cracks, chips, and uneven wear. When I removed the differential drain plug to flush it out with new fluid I found it covered with shavings. The gears in the differential look good. I got the bike last year with a few thousand miles on it and put an additional 7,000 on it. I suspect this 9 year old bike has never had any maintenance done before I picked it up – regardless what the last owner said. Has anybody had this experience or seen a drive shaft with this kind of wear? (see attached pictures)
12. I've posted about this before, but this seems like a good time to cover it again, just as a caution. I absolutely love the Avon Venom tires on my RSV - so far, they are the best handling (in all conditions) and best wearing tires I have tested. BUT, there is one thing I have never been happy about - these tires have absolutely NO margin of safety left at the bottom of the tread grooves. When that last hint of tread groove is smoothed off, there is only the barest wisp of rubber film left above the first layer of cord. Yes, we all know that you should never run a tire beyond the tire wear indicators, but I sure would like a little extra security under there anyway! Case in point is my recent trip around the Texas border. I had close to 10,000 miles on the rear tire before I left, and it still looked real good. I usually get 14,000 - 15,000 from an Avon rear tire, so I thought I had enough to make the trip; however, I also watched it carefully every day. We hit some really rough road surfaces in places that felt like riding on a cheese grater, and those did take their toll; however, all still looked safe Saturday morning when I headed out from Squire Vance's place south of Houston. But a hundred miles or so later on the ferry from Galveston to the Bolivar Peninsula, I noticed a spot where the tread groove was just disappearing, and I could see the slight beginnings of shredding that shows the tire cord is about to poke through. Since I had run these tires before, I knew what was going to happen very quickly, so I decided the best course of action was to head straight home (about 350 miles) instead of trying to finish the trip (maybe 800 miles). Now here are the pictures from that tire when I got home: 350 miles before there was NO cord showing on this tire Same tire, opposite side. Notice the layers showing between tread and base. This tire was out of balance when I took it off, with the heavy spot opposite the worst wear. But there is no way to know if that caused the wear or was simply the result of the wear - after all, there is obviously less rubber on the worn site, so that must make it the lighter side of the tire, right? My point here is to impress how quickly the cord will show through once you hit the bottom of the tread groove on these tires. If you look at the second picture, you can see that the long tread grove that crosses the center of the tire is just at the bottom, but right next to it you can detect the slightly different look of the lower layer of rubber that makes up the body of the tire. That's what I meant by "no margin of safety" below the tread groove. Always best to change those tires (any tires) as soon as they hit the tire wear indicators! But if you are on the road and wondering how far you might be able to push it to find a new one - you aren't going to push an Avon very far. Ride safe, Goose
13. I read an interesting article in Smithsonian Magazine this month: Presence of Mind: Buckle Up. And Behave http://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/Presence-of-Mind-Buckle-Up-And-Behave.html The article ostensible deals with the 50th anniversary of the introduction of the three-point seat belt but then goes on to discuss the human behavior of risk taking. "Now researchers are positing a risk compensation corollary: humans don't merely tolerate risk they seek it; each of us has an innate tolerance level of risk, and in any given situation we will act to reduce - or increase - the perceived risk, depending on that level." As I read the article I was thinking of several implications. As more safety equipment is added to cars does it make the roads more dangerous for bikers? Do bikers who wear helmets and other safety equipment ride less safely because they compensate for the improved odds of survival? If so, does that mean that we are safer if we wear less safety equipment and carried no personal liability or physical damage insurance? Interesting Iowa Guy
14. It's time for me to come out of the closet! The VentureRiders forum has really been a good place for me to get things off of my chest and I hope this time is no different. The spirit of openness displayed in the past, mixed with a tolerance for people of all types and preferences, makes me think that it is 'ok' to share one of my closely guarded secrets; a secret that my closest friends and family would shun me for if they knew about it. Let me say, first of all, that I was cold-busted keeping some thongs hidden in one of my drawers. No, they don't belong to some girl. They belong to me. I like wearing them! I can't help myself. It's not like I wear them all the time. Just whenever I can get a little "alone" time or riding the scoot, I like to slip into them. They make me feel free! When I first started wearing them they were kinda rough right were they rode up the middle, but after I got used to them, I hardly noticed they were there. This actually started a long time ago, when I was in the football camp in High School. I know, I know, but to help deal with certain stresses, I had some blue ones that I wore so much they almost came apart at the seems. It's not like I wore them during any inspections or reviews. But I can tell you that there was nothing better to wear especially when I was drunk! Well, after the High School, I never wore them again. I guess that I was just a little embarrassed. Also, it's not like I have any girly colors. I've got some in black, and a light blue, and my new favorites are a sort of darker magenta (not pink!), but definitely magenta. In the past, I have over-compensated for my hidden desire to wear them, and whenever the situation presented itself, I have openly criticized and bashed others that do, in front of my wife. But, about a month ago, when my wife was out of town, I cracked. I was at "that" section of the Wally-World and I just threw some that I thought might fit into the cart. I new they would go unnoticed by the checkout girl, probably assuming they were for my wife. I bought them and I wore those little babies all weekend long! I was shocked at the freedom I experienced. Well, my wife first threatened to expose me to friends and family. She was really shocked and I cant blame her. The whole thing caught her off guard. But now that I have been cold busted, I figured, hey...I might as well be me! She came around the corner a little while ago and saw me with my black ones on. She just wouldn't stop laughing. I can accept that. It is worth it, to just be who I really am. I've stopped the pretending...I like wearing thongs!! I posted this in hope that others who have this passion would post their love for thongs. If you want, just post right now, before you read any more. "I love wearing thongs!!" You know who you are. With a forum this big, I can't be the only one! G O . A H E A D . And . D O . IT Now, while hopefully someone is posting their passion for "thongs", let me explain this situation in more detail. When I was a little kid, my parents bought me a pair of leather sandals. I hated them and I can tell you that my toes still bear the scars of those unprotective footwear. Those sandals are in my earliest negative childhood memories. I was just one of those kids that smashed his foot into everything he could and honestly, the scars arent just on my toes...they're on the inside, too! One day, I cut those leather sandals up with some scissors and after having my a$$ severely beaten, I was never made to wear sandals again. My parents gave me some cowboy boots, praise the Lord, and that started my fond appreciation for all things BOOT! Oh, my family has teased me about sandals ever since and everone around me from those days forward, is well aware of my outward disgust for sandals. Then came summer camp. I needed thongs (flip-flops, shower shoes, whatever!) for the pool and the showers. I hadn't been at camp for two days when, at the pool, I was wearing some thongs and some water got under them and it was like hydro-planing. I busted my head on the concrete and was sick for two days with a serious concussion, and had to go home. That was it as far as I was concerned, but then came the football camp. I HAD to have some there. No telling what the heck was going on in the shower before I hit it and I was glad to have something between me and the floor. If it had been up to me though, I would have preferred to wear some boon dockers in the shower. But I did not have any serious accidents while wearing thongs in football camp. And I did get drunk while wearing some! After the High school, no more. Now, I love boots! Cowboy, hiking, desert, jungle, moon, boon dockers, jump, tankers, engineers, pole-climbers, Doc's, snakebite, and if you can put a steel toe in them, that's even better.Well, after decades of wearing boots, I have begun to realize that my feet need some attention. In the past, if I wasn't in shoes or boots, I was barefoot. But, as I have gotten older, it is hard for my flat feet to go barefoot all night around the house. So, one day I was at the store and I bought some thongs. Actually two pairs in different sizes and they both fit so I kept them. My feet really needed this. This is all hilarious to my wife because, as I said before, everyone knows that I have an unnatural abhorrence to sandals, flip-flops, etc. So, I kept them from her. She busted me. Because I have been such an out-spoken critic of all things 'sandal', she has threatened to take pictures of them and send them to my family. She laughs herself silly now every time she sees me in some. Hey, I just didn't know what I was missing. Not only did I need them, I like them! I think that I am just going to only wear them in the house though! I hope you can appreciate the effort at humor in this post. While it may not seem like a big deal to you reading, it has been a huge deal around my house! My wife just cant stop with the teasing. Now, I am hoping to see if someone was tricked into posting that they love wearing ladies underwear!!! BEER30
15. I was reading some post on wind buffeting. Has anyone tried tour wing windows? I put a set on a Honda 900 Custom years ago because the wind buffeting was so bad I couldn't hear the stereo & give me a headake. put the wings on & the buffeting stoped. I could wear a baseball cap & listen to the stereo with no more buffeting. was wondering if it would work on a Venture?
16. This was sent to me by a friend and I thought I would share it with all here......... Boomer........Who does wear black from head to toe. By: Wayne Haskell Some think bikers are mean, Some dressed in leathers and others in jeans. You don't like our patches or the clothes that we wear, You hate our bandannas and you hate our long hair. You don't like our scooters and our loud noisy pipes, You think we're not loyal to the Stars and Stripes. You don't like our patches that are worn on our vests, You think we're so different from all the rest. But the truth is Mister, we're kind of alike, You drive a car and I ride a bike. You have no tattoos painted on your arm, But we fought side by side in Viet Nam. So the next time your children are running around, Enjoy their freedom, and the fun that they've found. Remember us bikers and all that we do, We feed our lost veterans, we're red white and blue! We bring toys for tots and toys for a smile, By riding our bikes for miles and miles. You see, us bikers have never forgot, Our homeless veterans and our homeless tots. We are loyal to our clubs and true to our bro's, We will always wear black from our heads to our toes. Society once said that long hair was for fags, But you'll never see a biker burning a flag. Now the tattoos and leather you don't understand, Stands for free independence that us bikers demand. Our long hair and patches and bikes with loud pipes, Is a tribute to our freedom, the Stars and the Stripes. So before you make up your mind on just what I might be, Take a look in the mirror and what do you see? The man that you see that is staring right back, Is not too much different from that biker in black!! Ride Safe~Ride Free Gypsy
17. Not sure if I have a problem or not, it looks like one side of my front tire is on the road more then the other, if that makes sense, but I measured it from the center and the wear is equal, it looks off to me, what do ya`ll think??
18. Got a question for you cold weather riders who have been doing this for a while. What gloves do ya wear to keep your hands warm. I've rode home from work the last couple of mornings, temps around 30 to 32 degrees F, and with my snowmobile suit on my body stays comfortable, but my hands get extremely cold. I wear waterproof snowmobile gloves but it doesn't help. I'm not even going to try adding a handwarmer on the grips, beings what adding fuel is the extent of my mechanical abilities. Any help on warm gloves would be appreciated. Thanks, Glenn
19. I have four questions: Your feedback is much appreciated. *The rear shock - please explain the air pressure and identifying the proper pressure for a two up situation (is there a better more robust shock or spring to retrofit?) *Do you know if by using the the Barons Star Bar w / Barons Riser Extensions, do you need to change the cables? *Do you have a list of retrofits / fixes which should be done while the ferring is off the machine? *Tire wear issues: Droped off the machine to the repair shop for the 15K inspection. Prior to, I noticed some unusual wear in both the front and rear tire. Front - a very slight ridge running the entire right of center circumference of the tire, the rear just the opposite side. With the repair shop, we agreed it is time for a new set of tires. ( I run Mich. Comm. for two up conditions PSI F 40 (12k miles) R 44~46(8k miles) ) I check pressure before each run. Shortly thereafter, I went over to a buddies house to speak to him and check his tire wear. He has a VStar1100. He runs Metzlers. Respectfully, his tires show exactly the same type of tire wear, a slight ridge both left of center front and opposite in the rear. While discussing this, another rider pal shows up, another VStar1100 running Dunlops. the same issue, but the exact opposite with regard to front and back wear. Front ridge found to be right of center and so on. Both riders meticulous about T-Clock inspections and so fourth. I am wondering if this wear pattern is seen on all bikes. Only Yamahas Star bikes?? Any ideas. Two different bike models, three different tire manufacturers, and a good maintenance track record. Thank you all for your time and patience. Respectfully, R. Bustamante Long Island, NY
20. Has anyone tried both the E3 and the Venom? I've been riding on E3 and liked them alot. The front still is 50% but the rear is due. Do Venoms wear better/worse than the E3s? I got 11K out of the rear E3 will get 20K out of the front it appears?
21. Question to the experts. Is it possible, from lack of grease, for the Coupling Gear to wear enough to allow wobble of the drive shaft? This is not on my RSV but rather on my VStar 650. They are very similar in design. I have been having problems with a noise in the final drive. I disassembled everything (or so I thouhgt) and greased it. Turns out only half of the coulping gear got grease. Upon FULLY disassembling the unit, I grease the end of the drive shaft and the end of the pinion shaft. Upon doing so, the grease truned a nice rust color. After putting everything back together and the wheel on the bike, the "clicking" noise had subsided greatly. I ask about the wobble because there is a small but noticable groove half way round the drive shaft right about where the shaft goes through the housing. I am hoping that the engineers designed all this so that coupling gear ($18 part) would wear out first/fastest so to save the drive shaft ($125) from damage. Do I dare just replace the coupling gear and see if all "clicking" noise goes away? Sort of a one-piece-at-a-time approach?
22. Was pulled over by the law yesterday for a helmet violation.... Now mind you that DE doesn't require one to use a brain bucket, but I wear one anyway. Having said that you are wondering if I was in De at the time or why would the LAW pull me over is a bucket is not required and I'm wearing one...All great questions. Here goes the explanation: The LAWMAN says that you don’t need to wear a bucket in DE but if you do then it must have a DOT sticker on it. So I say “if you don’t need to wear a bucket in DE and you see someone riding down the street with a baseball cap on would you pull him over and tell him he needs to have a DOT sticker on it? He let me go with a warning, if I was to ride into MD or some other state that requires a bucket then my brain bucket would not be legal because it’s been painted and the DOT sticker is gone. Now what do you think of that?
23. I've got a nolan N41 classic plus helmet that needs a new face shield, hinge screw bolt and plastic slide cover over one of the hinges. Where is the best place to get parts for the nolan? I don't know that I am really fond of the helmet but its the one that has the headset I wear to talk with my wife when she goes along so I gotta keep it up in good repair. Iowa Guy
24. a harley rider swerved to miss a deer and went down and hit his head on the pavement, and was pronounced dead on the spot. he was 33 years old. what really bothers me is a very large margin of the harley riders around here and i would guess at least 80 percent wear those crappy non dot approved skid lids. thats like wearing safety glasses with no lenses, and they put their wife or girl freind on the back with the same crappy helmet. not just picking on harley riders cuz i'm sure there are some metric riders that wear them. if you gotta wear a helmet wear a good one. this happened not to far from where i live and kind of hits home. thought about it all the way home from work this morning on my scooter. i feel bad for him and his family. bill
25. I just talked with a service tech supervisor at yamaha. He said that none of the items i have brought up are warranty issues. He said it is not unusual to have to replace rotors at some time - 34,000 miles and a heavy rider -- normal wear and tear issues. it is my fault they have worn so much and are well below factory specifications. - not covered lower farings - not a factory defect norrmal wear and tear not covered antenna - not covered rear-end whine not covered they are replacing the trunk lock though. I talked with two people at yamaha - Erika xt 7692 and her supervisor mark xt 7442 their attitude was so sorry to bad go away. Yes, i am frustrated, i have tried to get the brake issue dealt with since the first months. Anyone know of anyone else at yamaha i can call or deal with? please let me know if you do.
