  1. i'm gonna have to trade my '86, in on a h.d.! those guys, can ride everyday in shorts, t-shirts, sandals, and NEVER a helmet. never see or hear of them guys getting creamed by a blue haired old lady in a new caddy! i think , there is a "subliminal" ,"bulls eye", painted on ALL big yamahas, that only "non-riders", can see! it is getting to a point, where just going out for an afternoon ride, is too risky, let alone an all out long distance tour! just jt
  2. Glad I'm married to a brunette and also that I don't ride an '83 BLONDE. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,312136,00.html
  3. I am beginning to plan our next big ride for next year and we think Utah will be the destination. There will probably be 3 to 5 bikes with 6 to 9 people. Those of us that choose to ride from KY will meet those that want to fly in Las Vegas. From there we'll head to Utah. At a minimum we will want to visit Bryce Canyon, Zion and Arches national parks. Is it possible to visit these locations out of a central location or will we need to ride some type of loop? We would like to stay a few of days in one place if possible instead of changing hotels daily. Is there a location that we could stay for a couple of days and take in Zion and Bryce and then move to Moab for a couple of days to take in Arches? I've put together a loop route but, since we are not familiar with the area, I am concerned we may need to overnight in some pretty desolate areas which may not have hotels. Therefore, I am seeking advice on how best to see Utah. How many days should we need? Any recommendations on lodging, sites, etc. We'll most likely visit in late May or early June. Thanks, Dennis
  4. I would like to know why you chose your user name and signature. I think it could help us all to know each other a little better. My user name is funrider, that is because I have fun everytime I go riding and every ride I have is fun. My signature use to be, My wife asks me when I am going ot grow up, I tell her I have to grow old, I don't have to grow up. ( that pretty much is the way I look at life, to many people grow old and forget to have fun.) Another person has a signature very much the same, so I have decided to change mine. My new one is, A clash between a bike and a cage, You can not win. Choose you battles wisely and live to ride again. After reading about all the accidents, damage to bikes. personal injuries and even the deaths of fellow riders, I feel this is only appropriate. Now it is your turn to tell all of us about why your user name and signature. Oh, one more question, how do I keep this post going?
  5. The insurance company is going to total out my ride. It seems that it falls into the 75% bracket. The only problem I have with it is the insurance company will no longer allow me to purchase collision insurance. With that thought in mind it makes me wonder if I should strip my stuff off and let it go. Has anyone ever purchased a bike with a salvage title?? If so, what are the problems that go along with it? The only thing hurt, other than the handle bars, are the plastics, fairings, saddle bag, trunk, ect.. I hate to let a good ride go for only $1,600 more than they will give me if I keep it... One thing, I have no plans on trading up until Yahama comes out with a EFI system. By that time it may qualify for a museum.
  6. OK Guys Ive decided that this winters project is gonna be a vw trike , so the whole family can ride together , and my wife can ride when we all go out. Soooo if ya have an old vw or know where one is that needs to be gone at a reasonable price let me know .....Fred:322:

  11. I don't like wearing helmets . . ., unless I'm riding in wintertime cold, or the rain, and then I don't mind them too much. However, now that I'm getting older and a little smarter, I realize that I need to overcome this attitude. Over the past few years I have tried a number of different helmets and found that I prefer different styles depending on the season. With my new Venture I also now use a headset/intercom system (Air Riders) and that is influencing my choice to wear a helmet more often. My current quest has to do with full-face helmets. If I wear a full-face helmet, it has to be a flip-up. I always ride with glasses or sunglasses and this is the style I prefer. When I wear my full-face, it's my XL, HJC Symax. The price was fair and it was pretty comfortable (considering that I don't really like wearing helmets). This past summer I road about 12,000 miles and had the opportunity to ride through a number of states which required I wear a helmet. During that time, I experimented with a few different helmets which really reminded me why I don't like helmets - it's because I'm not comfortable in them. Most of my riding is here in the Mountain West (Utah), and it's HOT here in the summer. Thank goodness it's not humid here, I don't think that I could cope with that. I tried a XXL, AGV 3/4 Helmet that was kind of cool-looking and pretty inexpensive. But, I soon discovered that the lack of cushioning on my forehead was unbearable. I then purchased an XL, HJC 3/4 and was pretty satisfied with that as a non-full-face helmet. A little while ago, I either heard or read somewhere that different brands of helmets have different fits and feels. So, I decided to try on a helmet which was far more expensive than I thought I would ever consider. I also tried a XXL instead of just an XL (I got a big head). I couldn't take it out to ride with it, but I did try it inside the store, and I think I can begin to understand why they cost so much more. What a difference over the less expensive ones I have tried. It actually felt all right. The helmet I tried was a Shoei Multitec. It was really comfortable. Secure but not too tight, it was a positive first impression. So, I put a down-payment on it and thought I would check and see if anyone here has had any experience with this particular helmet and especially using it with a headset. I really hope that this will be a helmet purchase I won't regret. Not that I want to test it's safety effectivness, but I do need to (learn?) to be happy with it so I will use it. For those who know, is the Shoei Multitec pretty quiet? Are different size cheekpads available? Any concerns I ought to be aware of about them. The best price I have found through a local dealer is $410. Your opinions are appreciated. Be Safe! Pete.
  12. Hi everyone I parted with my cash and bought Yanoosh's 86. He wasn't kidding, it is a nice ride. Needs a few things to bring it into A-1 status. Valve covers need resealed and one valve might need a shim. The tick is so slight I had to lean down on the tank and hear it. I need to Sea Foam it tomorrow and possibly synch the carbs. He was 110% truthful on every detail. I can say I am proud to have met him. Attached are some low reolution pictures. My connection is slow so I will wait until I get home and then pick a spot to publish them. So, off I go in the morning. I am in Manassas Va. right now. Rode it down from Springfield Va. right in the middle of rush hour! Ready to ride now. Gonna stop and pick up new boots tomorrow and a pair of riding gloves. My soles are worn out and when night falls, the gloves will feel good. Oh, might need advice on battery - seems to be a bit slow/weak on the start. J. B.
  13. My apologies if this has been posted. If this is a dead horse then it can be deleted. The following ran in last Thursday's USAToday http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-11-01-motorcycledeaths_N.htm?csp=34 Excerpt: Helmet laws have been repealed or modified in many states, however, and the DOT's new effort does not call for new helmet laws. Instead, the initiative focuses on: •Training. DOT will develop national standards for entry-level motorcycle riders to achieve what Peters calls "a baseline of competency." •Enforcement. DOT will create a training program to teach police officers about specific efforts to reduce crashes. •Education. Public service announcements will feature Peters on the importance of helmets and other protective gear. A "Share the Road" campaign will remind drivers to be alert for motorcyclists.. I think the training is excellent. I think too many people ride who are not qualified to ride. Education of the cager - much needed though I'm not real optimistic about it's impact. Your thoughts???

  15. I found another superb, ride, Highway 199, from Crescent City, Calif which run's NE to Grants Pass, Or. About 90 miles. Then, from Grants Pass, go 15 Mi. S to Medford Or. From Medford, take the Scinic ride N up to Crater Lake, Volcano, and from there take Oregon 138 back to RoseBurg, Or. ( Do a Google on "Crater Lake" , or check it out at the Wikipedia site ) Or, if you are rideing in Oregon, Any state Highway that cross's E to W or W to E, crossing the Cascade Mt. Range, or, the Coastal Mt. Range is gurenteed to be a good ride. Any of these routes will be from 60 to 100 miles, of Twisties !!! And, you will not see any N.Carolina HWP !!
  16. Just picked up my cowlings from the body shop. They did a great job. Take a look a the bottom of the cowling, the new part is black over rock guard. The rest of the pics are my new ride and I'm going out now and put some miles on her. Yamaha is getting cheap there's no Run/Stop decal for the kill switch.
  17. Hey today is Friday........I was assured by the Yamaha folks that my Clutch Basket would be here this week......well we have about 8 hours left......I have been patient......quite so I think........even found me a new dealer who is quite nice.....but still he is dependent upon Yamaha. I am not sure what the deal is with this clutch basket.....whether they make a whole new one.....or blueprint one already made......hey do not care anymore.........I just want it fixed. My Basket full of Crickets completely quits at high speeds..say 65 in 4th and on up to 75 in 5th. Smooth as silk......Hey I do not ride that fast much.....only if wanting to go somewhere and I hit the interstate....normally I love the back roads......take a long lazy ride.....55 mph tops......do the speed limit......keep one eye on all the passing impatient cages. That is how I like to ride. At these speeds the whine is very high pitched and annoying....... So today is the day of decision.......if they do not call me....I am done......the Venture is a nice bike.........but hey.........that screaming eagle down at the Harley shop is looking better and better........I may find myself going in just to look again today..... So what do you all think........think you can handle an old school Harley Rider with a sense of humor? I am used to making head gaskets out of a Tide soap box.....but hear testing has been done and Fab boxes are much more tear resistant..........:stirthepot: Kit
  18. Im going to be picking up my trailer from bush tech on Nov 2 and riding up on the 1st, anyone want to ride up there.
  19. Our riding time this year is almost non existent. Every time something comes up. The 84 had one 1/2 day ride solo in the mountains. We took the 89 to Freebirds maint day event and one local meet and eat. The 99 went on Vacation to Florida and back via vogel. Other then an occasional ride to the store or something that is it. I'll be lucky to get 4-5K this year.I bet Lowell gets 5K per month.
  20. So the big question is how far have you ridden in one day? In my youth (almost 30 years ago) I did a cross country ride averaging 500 miles a day on a Kawasaki 400. Crazy I know but I was just a kid of 19. Saturday I did my personal best with 800 miles in a single day on an 83 Venture. The weather man warned that Saturday would be nice but Sunday we would have our first Snow of the season in Denver, CO so I planned to ride on Saturday. When I woke at 4:00am I decided to get an early start and ended up at Mt Rushmore by about noon then back home. Great ride on a very comfortable bike. 800 miles three states and four dead presidents all in one day while staying just hours ahead of a snow storm, now that is a great day.
  21. On Sunday, Oct 21st, Lone Eagle and myself (Condor) are taking a ride to Woodland Ca. for BBQ RIBS at Ludy's, then on to Reiff's Gas Station to take a look at an awesome antique collection of 1930's, 40's and 50's Gas Station memoribilia. If we have the time we'll also take in the AG History Center. Anyone in the San Francisco/Sacramento/Nor-Cal area that would like to join us is more than welcome. We'll meet for lunch at noon. It's going to be a great time. And bring your cameras. http://www.reiffsgasstation.com/images/web-tex1_rd75.png This is the perfect location for your next Car Club gathering! Book the patio for your next luncheon or just stop in for a tour. http://www.reiffsgasstation.com/images/web-usethismap_.jpg
  22. I picked up my new bike yesterday and as promised, here a few photos. I spent the day today installing my electronics (GPS, XM, Tach, led brake light), handlebar risers, and highway pegs. I have a few more things to do but I am going to ride tomorrow. If you would like to see higher resolution photos they can be found at: www.traynorphoto.com/07venture Dennis
  23. No not motorcycle #18. No not wife # 18. Not child #18. #18 grand child. Daughter and grand daughter are both doing great. Gran pa is happy, another excuse to go out for a ride. Grand kids all want rides. My daughter wouldn't let me take the new arival out for a ride, I assured her the side bag would hold her quite well. Maybe she thought it was a little cold, We do live in North Dakota. By the way, #19 is on the way. I don't know, if my kids are just all very fertil or if they just enjoy the horivontal bop? How many can top this at 55 years of age?
  24. Just got in at 9:10 pm that makes 14 hours & 505 miles on the road, had a great ride, nice group, good food, more great roads and Jack even took us on one road that was comparable to the Dragon...............Thanks Jack.........had a great time.........cant wait to see the pics, especiall the ones Todd, 86er took.
  25. My totaled '04 Midnight was hauled off by the salvage company yesterday and this afternoon I picked up my new'07 blue/black RSV from the dealer. It sure felt different on the 25 mile ride home. The engine is quieter, not the pipes, but the mechanical engine noise, even at idle. Absolutely no whine from the clutch basket. I had the "I" basket on the '04 and this one is quieter. The transmission seemed to shift a bit smoother. This evening I put the handlebar risers and highway pegs on and now it feels right. Tomorrow I'll work on getting all of my electrical accessories installed and should be ready nice long day ride by Sunday. Oh, and I know the rules, pics will follow tomorrow. Dennis
