  1. Hooked up the gps and went riding, The speedo say 120 kph(74.5 MPH) and the gps 110 kPH(68.3 MPH) I see I wont be getting speeding tickets
  2. I have 2000 RSV. Tried out the cruise yesterday and when "cruise set" i locks the cruise at about 5 mph slower than what I'm traveling. Then I have to press accel to get up to speed. Then it will only hold that speed for 1/2 mile or so and start slowing down. I can keep pressing accel up but bike won't hold speed on it's own. I this something I can look at fixing myself? or do I need to bring it in?
  3. Yesterday, wife and I were out and about, just enjoying getting on the bike for a time. We were heading out of OKC on the freeway when we were passed by two Motor Officers, riding side by side at about 70 MPH. I picked up speed and stayed behind them for a while just watching them. Like I said, we were traveling at 70 MPH, the two officers were exactly side-by-side. The thing was, there were never more than 2-4 inches between the tips of their handlebars, always perfectly aligned. They were talking and laughing with each other, apparently perfectly relaxed, looking around enjoying the day as much as I was. I followed them through several lane changes, passing cars, until they took an exit. Never did they move further apart or get ahead of the other, during these manuvers. They never looked down at where they were in relation to the other, they just seemed to know. I consider myself a fairly smooth and consistant rider, but I cannot imagine riding that close on purpose. The confidence you must have, not only in yourself but in your partner, is way beyond any I could muster. It was a beautiful thing to see.
  4. I've tried to look the threads and maybe I missed it. Question: How do the bub's sound at 70 mph? Do they scream or purr?
  5. How much wining noise should I get at 65 mph???
  6. O.K. I got the gauge set I bought from Ponch all hooked up now and so far it don't leak. Well after I tightened it down some more. I do have a few questions for those of you that have it. By the way I love the looks. My oil gauge reads almost zero at adle but reads 40psi at 40 mph and 60psi at 60 or higher speeds. the amp gauge reads a little over 12 at idle but will move up to about 14amps at 50 or better mph. Temperature goes up to about 190 or so after about 15 minutes of riding time. Are all of these normal or within range for the VENTURE???...............Ron
  7. Heading out with the bike to give those new knee deflectors a try. Its a frosty 70 out with the wind gusting to 25 mph. Should be a perfect test......Hope the ice cream dont melt too fast....
  8. Sometimes when going about 60 mph, I hear a high pitched sound coming from I-don't-know-where. If the bike is straight up, it goes away. If I lean slightly left or right, it's there, significantly louder than the wind and road noise. Doesn't seem to matter if I'm accelerating, decelerating or pull in the clutch and coasting. Since it only seems to happen at one small range of speed, gets much louder when at a slight angle, and doesn't seem to change with accel/decel, my guess is that it's the tires, but I thought I'd post here just in case it's something that needs to be addressed. Has anyone experienced anything like this? Do (Dunlop 404) tires whine at certain speeds?
  9. Just wanted to see what the Venture Nation thought about the top speed for a 87 venture would be. I have been driving mine around town and on trips not over 300 miles round trip but the other day I was on the interstate and could only get her up to 80 MPH. This is plenty fast enough and I very rarely want to exceed 70 MPH but was wondering if my slides/ Diaphragms or carbs are out of sink. What do ya'll think? The bike has about 30000 miles on her and idles, starts quick and runs fine. At high RPM there is some sputtering when in low gear and getting the tach up high. Thanks!!!
  10. I have on ly had my 06' venture for a week. Today I put my Garmin gps on and went for a ride(I know my Garmins speedo is accurate) It showed anywhere between 3 and 5 mph to slow, it also is jittery instead of smooth, like a real needle would be. Any suggestions.
  11. First a little background... I have a 99 RSV that has 125K miles. She is almost completely stock and I ride daily to and from work. A few years ago I decided to check my carb balance (I use a 4 guage set up) and noticed that #3 and #4 cylinder readings "danced" badly at idle. #1 and #2 were holding steady. By increasing the RPMs to around 1200-1300, #3 and #4 both smoothed out nicely, so I adjusted the balance there. It only needed minor tweeking to get all four cylinders to near perfection. Since the bike has always run and pulled smoothly at all speeds and loads, I have continued to use this method since. This info may or may not have any bearing on my current problem. Now to the problem: My wife an I just returned from a two week, 2K mile trip around Colorado riding two-up pulling my Time Out camp trailer some of the time. Total trailer weight was around 350 pounds and around 15-20 pounds on the toung. When I was fully loaded (wife and trailer) I found that I could hardly drive in 5th gear at all. Even on level ground at 65-70 MPH, any time I tried to accelerate or maintain speed on a slight hill, the engine would feel like it was missing severly. I'm talking here about a miss strong enough to shake the fairing until the speedo was almost unreadable and almost 0 acceleration. Back off the throttle or down shift into 4th and things were smooth again. Park the trailer (still two-up) and things are back to normal. Smooth acceleration from 55 MPH in 5th with wide open throtle. Now I realize that I am probably pushing the limit for a 1300cc bike with the load I had, but the severity of the vibration supprised me and I have never experienced it before in this bike. This is the first time into the mountains with this trailer. Thoughts I've come up with: Weak spark plug blowing out under heavy load...had around 2500 miles on them when I left. Porely adjusted valves running just on the edge....never been checked. Just the nature of the beast...down shift and don't worry about it. Any thoughts? Your experiences with heavy loads?
  12. While I'm waiting for my new clutch upgrade to arrive, the OEM clutch is slipping a lot now.. I'm wondering if something is out of adjustment.. I don't fully understand how these clutches work or if they can be adjusted but here goes. While traveling 70 mph in either 4th or 5th, if I come onto the throttle, the clutch slips badly.. Today for the fun of it, I just touched the clutch inwards a bit and the revs came up fast.. wow, not too much pressure.. but only when at 70 mph in 5th.. city street speeds and gears doesn't really have that effect.. Would I be lucky enough that there is a quick adjustment that can be made to make the clutch better? The bike is still ride-able, just can't drop the hammer on it.. sigh
  13. I got back yesterday afternoon. Had a great time and rode all over Talladega National Forest. From I-20 East go south on hwy 21 turn east on 398 turn left on 281, 199 curves in 14 miles. Went to Grits mill and covered bridge. Traveled 652.7 miles and averaged 45 mpg, driving the speed limit (indicated 75, which is 70 mph) and posted limits elsewhere. It was also nice and cool. The directions I gave was to Mt. Cheaha, be sure to go to Ball Rock outlook. Will try to post pictures in photobucket. http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc231/TEW47/ tew47
  14. OK took a ride this weekend to help my cuzin get his bike back together and hang out. On my way there the first tank of gas I ran out at 65-70 mph and got 43 mpg. The second tank was ran out at 75-80 mph and I got 33 mpg. On the way home today I ran 70 mph all the way home and got 40 mpg. Is it normal for a first gen to get such varying mpg and espcially such a drastic change when over 75 mph. it all seems to be pulling fine with plenty of power all the way through the gears. Just been wandering as I have niticed varying changes in fuel economy but this is the first time I ve been able to get a hold on the mph to mpg issue. Tahnks for all and any answers. David
  15. So I finally got to drive her to work for the first time since I fixed the carb and shifter issue. I have driven her around town a bit for the last 3 days with no issues maybe a total of about 10 or so miles. Today I got about 5 miles down the road to a red light of a major intersection and she died. I was able to get her restarted before it turned green. Since then it almost seems to be a clogged jet again. Here is what she is doing....the acceleration is gone away...it almost seems that she is struggling below 4500 rpms. After 4500 she shoots off like a rocket. this happens in every gear. I tried to get on the highway but she would not go above 60 MPH. I can roll the throttle and hear the engine increase with a deep pitch scream much will not go any faster. When I break the 4500 rpm range, she given a higher pitch scream as she accelerates up to 60 MPH. I have been through the carbs and all was scrubbed with gas and blown with an air hose. Now mind you the time when riding around town, she was great with acceleration and speed, though I never went over 55 MPH. What do you think I should do from here? Also, I just installed the NGK spark plugs...
  16. Well this is getting interesting. Last year we had a rider tagged at 155 MPH on a Honda out on West Dodge. Yesterday we broke his record. The name has been changed to protect the moron. At 188 MPH, Motorcyclist Can't Elude Police "Idiot Delight" Arrested In Omaha KETV.com August 6, 2009 OMAHA, Neb. -- Police said a motorcyclist, "Idiot Delight" who fled from them Wednesday at almost 200 mph not only put himself in danger but also drivers in cars. "You can check your rear view mirror and not see anyone, and then have someone coming by you at 188 mph," said Iowa State patrol Lt. Mike Miller. "It's a frightening thing for the public." Miller said a driver being passed can react in unpredictable ways and endanger everyone else on the road. The motorcyclist, 36-year-old , "Idiot Delight" accelerated after troopers spotted him on Interstate 29 near Missouri Valley. He sped into Council Bluffs, where he got on Interstate 480 at Broadway Avenue, Miller said. Within minutes, he was speeding west on Interstate 80 in Omaha. He exited at 60th Street and stopped his sports bike at a house near 59th and Fay streets, where he was caught. "Idiot Delight" faces several felony and misdemeanor charges. This was partly in the Interstate through Omaha itself. Heavy traffice most the time. I see enough of these morons almost every day. A group of rocket riders will block off a couple of lanes on the Interstated by slowing down traffic then do their 75 MPH wheelies in the gaps. Seen some pretty close calls by cagers jumping into the open lanes and not seeing what was going on behind them. It's a freak show out there these days. Mike
  17. Ohio State Patrol clocked a couple of motorcycles speeding. The lead was going 147 MPH. There is video on this link along with the story. The quote that got me was: http://www.nbc4i.com/cmh/news/local/article/osp_video_off-duty_trooper_officer_ticketed_for_speeding/19172/ Trooper Bryan Lee: “Either one of you have anything on you I need to know about?” “No sir. A couple badges is all,” one of the motorcyclists said. They were given tickets later but not during the traffic stop. All I could think of was that if it had been me, they would have had me on the ground and cuffed before hauling me in.
  18. I rode my bike to work this morning. The fog was thick and about 3 or 4 inches up the center of the windshield the dew would not blow off. It was rolling off of it ever where else. I was running about 70 mph. Is there something to put on it so that it won't stay on the windshield? thanks tim
  19. Awww man.. I got my carbs all synched up nicely.. took special care to do them up right and all.. I was heading out of town to get new E3s installed.. go figure.. a nice shop 2.5 hours away charges less for tires and installation that it's worth the while to go out there and have it done.. however, with our expensive gas, it comes out even after the gas price factor.. However.. Running the bike up to 75 mph in 4th gear everything is SO nice.. smooth, mirrors steady, no buzz, lots of guts.. but when I shift into 5th (OD), it feels all wrong.. I would best describe it as harsh helmet buffeting while driving over a rumble strip.. does that make sense? A heavy thumping sensation that goes away when I shift back into 4th and / or go 85 mph in 5th, though I can feel part of it.. I tested it out by synching the carbs again, shutting it off, starting it up again, blipping the throttle a little and even switching the lines so that the carbs would pump against a different pair of rods (in case one or two were sticking) but all certainly does appear rock solid.. But I can't figure out what's causing that weird feeling in 5th.. it's not lugging, not at those speeds... I started feeling it happening even before I synched up my cards.. but this time I was on a long road trip so I could really feel it.. Rode back mostly in 4th at 75-80 mph which didn't seem to hurt fuel economy too much considering the winds.. but very responsive =) Any thoughs or ideas? BTW, them E3's are sweeeeet!!
  20. What cruising speed are you comfortable with? When I had my 1st Gen's, I enjoyed a steady speed of 70 mph and Now with my 2009 Klr 650 I found that crusing at 65 mph feels just right
  21. How do you repair a 1st Gen speedometer mine is 10mph high so it says I'm doing 70 mph really doing 60 mph How do you fix it?
  22. I was just returning to town, about 10 miles to go, and had been running the Interstates on a ride, for less than 2 hours, running at 70 MPH. All of a sudden my speed cut back to 60 and then less and increasing the throttle made no difference. I took the next exit, throttled back, went through town and back home with no further problem, but not going over 35 MPH now. This was earlier this morning and the temperature was actually rather cool. Recalling an experience with one of the pickups in the past, a similar problem proved to be a semi plugged filer. Anyone agree, or is there another possibility? Owen.
  23. Hi Everyone, My 06 RSTD with 2,000 miles on it now has developed a noise which sounds like the fan is hitting the radiator. It's a metal sound like the fan hitting the radiator but I'm sure it's not. I hear so much about the chirp but this does not sound like a chirp and I only get it at a low rpm. 20 mph in second, 30 mph in third and 40 in 4th. It's only for about a 5 mph range that it does it. So like 3rd is the most noticeable and only from about 29 to 34 mph. Don't know if maybe it's the clutch basket hitting a little at the low rpm. It drives me CRAZY!!!!! Any thoughts???Thanks, Shortrider
  24. Got her out a little this evening. Finished blowing bottom out of exhaust chamber!! Make as much noise as my neighbor's Hardley. But she is running and going down the road without any problems. Little shake if you turn loose of the bars at 50 mph. Probally that Brickstone on the front. Patched that exhaust chamber and those Jardines really sounded sweet for about 15 miles. Then POW!!! Not ment for me to own a pretty (no scratches) or a quiet bike. But 2nd gear will crank out 70 mph pretty quick. I'll shut up now. Still pretty pumped. Only got in about 40 miles. Maybe a night ride??
  25. Yesterday while on duty I clocked a guy on a victory vision going 74 mph while he was in a 35 mph zone. After I stopped him he said he was on the way to the hospital to see his wife. I'm not going to say weather or not I gave him a ticket:rasberry:, but I really think he was showing off for the guy on the crotch rocket he blew by!
