  1. I am in the process of rebuilding the carbs on my 84. It seems that the PO did not pay attention to the proper placement of the pilot air jet, the deceleration jet and the main fuel jet, all of which are interchangeable, except for the size. Can someone steer me as to which jet goes where? I am not sure of the exact sizes, the stamping is not that great, but I think I have 80,117.5 and 170.
  2. Hi all, my 84 has a bad air mixture screw, if anyone has one that is willing to part with I will buy it .
  3. I've read where several folks recommend the 86-93 bikes upgrade (?) to the jets used in the 83, ie... 3G2-14231-36-00 JET, 1 MAIN (#180.0) from stock 170 4G0-14142-32-AO JET, PILOT (#42.5) from stock 37.5 One in depth article is all full of the improvements it would make to a 1300 engine used in Denver at 5,280 feet... not quite applicable to the rest of us folks. I hear that there's some throttle transition improvement but never see what difference was made to gas mileage or real other changes... Anybody have some more specific info? And is there some prefered compound to use on minor cracks on the lower, rubber carb manifolds?
  4. Judging from what I have seen so far many of the modifications we make to the bikes are possibly illegal on the federal level. In my area there are also the mods that are illegal on the local level, like no mufflers, that seem to be ignored by the police....so far. There was an interesting link to the Motorcycle Riders Foundation posted by Steve (Bummer) in another thread. Also the federal laws. Going by MRF many of the more common modifications such as Vmax rear end, plugging the AIS, muffler change or modification, jet changes, air filter/air box changes, rev limiter changes, cam etc. assuming not using something that has been certified for the bike, could be trouble. At this time I assume the only thing we could remotely see are violations for exhaust changes. They would be easier to tell then final drive gears changes or jet work. Is it likely? Not from what I see of the uncorked Harley's in Tucson. I still wouldn't be surprised if one day there is a crack down here but no sign yet. If someone with power gets fed up here it could even swing the other way and go 100% compliance. How about in other areas? Has anyone run into examples of enforcement? Anyone have a good guess as to what the future may bring? Jerry
  5. HI everyone, I'm about to put Bub 4-2 exhausts(full system, not slip ons) on my '06 RSTD. Has anyone done this? Did you have to rejet? If so, where did you get your jet kit? I can't find jet kits for this bike anywhere. I have already put K&N filters on it. Any help would be great.
  6. Is there a way to access the pilot jets without removing the carbs? I'd like to try richening them up one notch. I was also going to raise the jet needles up and found that there were no adjustment grooves. Do you use washer type shims, or do you need different needles? Thanks, Gary

    re jet

I am new owner of a 07 RSMV and just going threw the break in period. The Bike runs like a dream and is schld in for it's first oil change next week. I am cusious if upgrading to a K&N filter will make a noticeable difference in Power, also cusious if I have to re jet??? Tks Victor .
  8. Just posting this info for general information - no particular reason (all comments below apply to the US49 models, I did not look at the CA models): I spent some time comparing the Yamaha parts breakdown for the carburetors on various years and models of the Royal Stars. The most interesting and puzzling fact I found is that ALL Royal Star VENTURES have three different sized main jets between the four carburetors! Cylinders 1 & 2 use a #122.5 jet, Cylinder 3 uses a #117.5 jet, and Cylinder 4 uses a #120 jet. To complicate this explanation a bit further, each carb shows three different jets that are labeled as "Jet, main," of which two are always the same in all four carbs, but the third one is different! For example, the parts breakdown for an 05 RSV shows item 26 as Jet, main #85, item 27 as Jet, main #140, and item 29 as Jet, main #120 (UR #4), #117.5 (UR #3), and #122.5 (UR #1,2). Confused yet? I am. The maintenance specifications in the shop manual only shows one main jet (with the different sizes for each cylinder), so the other two that the parts breakdown lists as main jets are misnomers. The part numbers for the carburetors on the Venture have changed several times (99-04 same part number, 05-07 same part number, and 08 another new part number), but the jets are identical on all of them. I did not try to look close enough to find out what parts did change with the new carb part numbers. The RSTDs have a different carb part number than the Ventures, but the jets are identical. The other Royal Star models BEFORE the Venture all used the same main jet size in all four carburetors. In 1999, the Royal Star Boulevard, Tour Classic, AND Tour Deluxe all used 4 #117.5 main jets, but the 1999 Venture was the first one to use the three different jet sizes. For the life of me, I don't have a clue why the two left cylinders should use the same jet size, but each of the right side cylinders has a different size (one larger and one smaller)??? But they do. Wish I had an exhaust gas analyzer; if I did, I would play around with seeing what happened if I set them all the same size. Goose
  9. Ok I just pulled my spark plugs out of my 2006 Venture and they are almost white in color. Very little gray and just a very little hint of brown spots on the procelin. My bike is already up one jet size with a dyna 3000 set on setting 4, K&N air filters, Mod air box, AIS pluged, mod stage 3 RK pipes. I called my dealer and talked to the service man which I know realy good and he said I should go up one more jet size . This setting I am running is what I had in my 1999 venture and the plugs were a light coffee colored like they should be. The dealer stated that Yamaha had to lean the bikes out in 2006 to get with the EPA requirments. What else would couse my bike to go so lean? Bikenut:sick:
  10. Anyone know where I can get a jet kit for my '07 Venture? I've looked at Dynajet but it stays it's for years 1996 to 2001. I don't know if this would work or not. Don't know if they changed something on the carbs after 2001. Any Help? Thanks.
  11. Got this by email. Have no idea about how valid it may be but was kind of fun to watch. The footage first shows ground crew from America, Spain, Germany, Italy and Holland conventionally directing aircraft. As the music changes to YMCA, the 21-year-old Brit makes his impressive entrance. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leacw8H8Lrk]YouTube - How to marshall a Jet full version[/ame] The video was made by RAF staff and has raised over £1,000 for Cancer Research UK. Mark Coote, director of community fundraising at Cancer Research UK, said: "By raising much valued funds for Cancer Research UK, Dean also appears to have raised many a smile from the cockpit of the RAF jet fighters he helps take off and land. We salute him for his imaginative fundraising dance moves and for his efforts in helping us in our bid to beat cancer."
  12. I am looking for a set of after market pipes for my `05 Shadow Aero 750... any body have a set just laying around or know of a place that I could get a good deal on a set?? I will also need to jet the carb, so any one recomend a good easy jet kit for this bike?? Thanks for any help Kreg
  13. NONE of your kids, have ever heard a jet , break the sound barrier! just jt
  14. Hi all. i was wondering if there is an availible jet kit for this bike? I have bub slip-ons (it made a little more power) and when i pulled off the air boxes, the bike ran like poo (too lean). I'm hoping to put on 4 individual K&N filters and it will definatly need more aggressive needles and bigger mains. Is there a kit availible for this bike? The stock intake system is pretty restrictive so i'm hoping this will wake the motor up a little. Thanks, James
  15. I'm just wondering if all of your 06rstd's/ventures have a whirring sound like a jet engine when you roll the throttle? I was out Saturday and parked beside a venture that didn't have that sound. Mine has, since it was bought new last August. I thought it was due to the 4 cylinders? Milage and acceleration are both great but definitely doesn't have a V-twin sound. Should I be worried? What can you yama-experts tell me?
  16. Preface by Don Nelson (Freebird) When Don Murray told me that he was tackling this project, I asked him if he would take some pictures so that we could add them to our tech library. He not only agreed to do so but did a fantastic job of it. Now....is this something you want to do? You'll just have to decide for yourself. The last I heard from Don, he had gone a jet size larger and though he liked the way it ran, a sparkplug inspection seemed to indicate that it was running a little rich. So..he then went a size smaller and didn't feel that it ran as well. So I think he has now gone back to the original main jets and in his case, feels that only the size larger on the pilot jet was needed. That and shimming the needles. Don did a great job so if you find any errors here they are probably my fault in editing. Let me know and I'm make any corrections needed. Re-Jetting the Venture Carbs Thanks to Don Murray for this great write-up After you have removed the carbs and cleaned them set them on a table facing the way you see them in the first picture...it may help you to number them as you see in the picture...you will need to refer back from time to time to make sure you're working on the right carb. The reason I say this is because only two carbs use the same size jets.(1.) Now you'll want to remove the bowls, it may help keep you organize to only remove the bowl of a single carb at a time so you don't install the wrong jet in the wrong carb....don't ask how I know....okay you'll need a #10 allen wrench with a ball end if you don't want to mirer up the bolts...after you get the bowl(s) off this is what you'll see....(2.)(3.) This jet is the main jet! From the factory (stock) it is 122.5 carb #1 122.5 carb #2 117.5 carb #3 120 carb #4 now do you see why I said only remove one bowl at a time....now this only matters if you're changing jets. Here is the main jet after it is removed. It is the one being pointed to with the stick. Okay lets say you want to increase the fuel consumption and maybe increase the HP's (maybe).....without a dyno it's anybody guess if you increased your HP. Okay here's what Joe had said about the correct jet sizes and it worked for me.... carb # 1 up 125 carb # 2 up 125 carb # 3 up 120 carb # 4 up 122.5 along with this jet size increase you should also be using K&N air filters and the "D" cutout in the air filter holders. Now what I found to be a big change was to change the pilot jet....the stock one is 15..replace it with a 17.5 (5.) Here is what the Pilot Jet looks like after you remove it. Again, it is the one pointed to with the stick. The next thing is shimming the needle valves. This is relatively simple and can be done without removing the carbs from the bike if this is the only thing you wish to do. What it will give you is quicker throttle response. Not much commentary here. The pictures tell the story pretty well. Fist thing is to remove the black cover that covers the diaphragms. The spring will just lift out. This is what you have at this point. This is the needle plug holder. Pull it straight out and the diaphragm, slide and needle will lift out. There is an O-Ring here for the vacuum to the diaphragm. Be sure not to lose it. Now...pull straight out on the holder to remove the needle. Here is what the needle assembly will look like. You will want to add some washers to the needle and diaphragm. Now I don't know what Don Murray did but I simply removed one of the washers from the top and and slid it up from the bottom. That shims the needs a bit and is where you get the quicker throttle response. Just disassemble the unit and move one of the washers or buy extra washers from your dealer. Okay...now you just need to put it all back together. After it's back togeher, check the slide. Move it up and let it fall. Use your finger to run this test. If they fall fast rather than just float down as they should, then you probably didn't get the diaphragms back in properly, no sealed. Remove and reinstall them. And that folks, is about it. Reinstall the carbs and go for a ride. If it doesn't run to suit you, just start all over. Jetting is NOT an exact science and unfortunately, it sometimes takes two or three tries to get things the way you want them. Is it worth all the trouble? I don't honestly know....if you try this, maybe you can tell us.
