  1. Hi, My '84's starter clutch is a real problem when the bike is cold, like first thing in the morning, but not so much when the bike is warm from a run or has been sitting in the sun at quitting time. Is this a common failure mode? (I have the part, just no time to install it) Thanks, Brian H. Uxbridge Ont
  2. I just rode my Venture home from the dealer after the clutch basket exchange on the gears. All I can say is I "think" I can hear a small difference and it might just be in my head because I can definitely still hear the whine and chirping. It was a warranty repair and the basket that went in looked exactly like the one that came out. Even the mechanic couldn't tell the difference. I think it's a sound I'll have to live with until I trade it to a wing or a newer version of the Venture without the whine. Eddie
  3. Can anyone tell me where the clutch bleeder screw is on a first generation? My friend has one that needs worked on. Thanks a bunch
  4. After studying the posts on this site, I decided I would install a Bartlett clutch in my '86 Venture. Everything came out just fine, but, I think there may be a problem. Is the clutch boss supposed to have any play in it? I can get a slight wobble out of it. I hadn't planned on taking it off, but will for sure if this "play" is abnormal. I would very much appreciate some advice here.
  5. Has anyone had a problem with the 2007 venture that all of a sudden the bike will not move. A freind of mine has a 2007 venture and was 250 miles from home and he stated that when in a town the clutch stated to slip and within 50 feet the bike would not move anymore. He said it was without warning. Has anyone else ever heard this happing. I think his clutch spring gave out but he has not found out from the dealer yet. He also said he pushed the bike on the trailer in gear without nowing it. Yes the clutch was out not pulled in. So any ideas. Lets see how good we are guessing want happened. When I find out from him I will post the results.
  6. Does the 2nd gen RSV use the same crankcase oil for its hydralic clutch as multiplate wet clutch or is it separate?
  7. Stopped by the Starmotorcycles page today and saw they had the info about the 2009 V-Max up. I don't remember seeing anyone else talk about it on here. I see it has:Type1679cc liquid-cooled 65° V-4, DOHC, 4 valves/cylinder http://www.starmotorcycles.com/assets/common/line.gif Bore x Stroke90.0mm x 66.0mm http://www.starmotorcycles.com/assets/common/line.gif Compression Ratio11.3:1 http://www.starmotorcycles.com/assets/common/line.gif Fuel DeliveryFuel Injection with YCC-T and YCC-I http://www.starmotorcycles.com/assets/common/line.gif IgnitionTCI http://www.starmotorcycles.com/assets/common/line.gif Transmission5-speed, multiplate slipper clutch http://www.starmotorcycles.com/assets/common/line.gif Final DriveShaft. high hopes anyone??????????? The site also has info on the 2009 Vstars....250, 650 and 1100. Nothing on the others as of yet.
  8. 91 Venture Royale. My clutch switch broke. The rubber or plastic housing broke right where it goes into the clutch lever assembly. I ordered a new one. My questions are; Where does the other end of the switch wire terminate? The guy at the shop said it was probably behind the headlight. Anybody know for sure? If I'm into the headlight area, should I replace my 17-year-old bulb? Is there a brighter-than-stock replacement bulb that will work and won't overload my system? Thanks
  9. With the help of some of you ( Rocket, danob ), I got my clutch tore out and started to put it back together. I decided I just needed to take it in and have everything looked at so after I put the stack back in but before new seal and cover was on I tried to start it with no luck. It actually acts as if you are trying to start it in gear, it just wont roll over at all. Plus the clutch lever is like a rock. Now obviously I didn't put something back together right but have no clue what it is. I put all the plates back in exactly the way they came out well I thought but probably not. Anyone have any ideas. I need to get it running so I can at least get it to the shop, too nice of weather for it just to be sitting in pieces in the garage. Thanks
  10. Help. I have an 86 Venture with 38 thousand miles. I bought the bike last October and have been going over the bike for the past six months performing routine maintenance and non-routine repairs as well as body work and cleaning. I have had it out a few times to check my progress on brakes, etc. I was ready to ride down to the local bike shop to have a Dunlop 491 put on the front wheel in hopes of improving the handling a bit, especially on cracks in the pavement and uneven pavement. When I fired up my machine and put it into first gear the engine quit. This occurred out of nowhere as I had not had a previous starting or shifting problem. Coincidentally I had bled the clutch the previous night to flush out the old brake fluid (and air bubbles) and put in the new. I thought that I might have not gotten all the air out so I bled again with a power bleeder. Still no help. The side stand switch seems okay. I am not sure about the shift switch except that the neutral and gear indicator on the CMS does occassionally flicker or there is often a delay on the indicator as to which gear the bike is in. I still suspect the clutch switch because I also cannot start the bike in gear (with the sidestand up and the clutch handle pulled in all the way to the handle bar). Last night I dissasembled the clutch handle and switch, cleaned up the contacts, got rid of the rubber dust boot on the rod for the hydraulic plunger and tightened things up a bit. I thought this did the trick because I got the bike going from neutral to 1st gear without stalling the engine 2-3 times. Thinking I solved my problem I decided to ride over and see how my buddies were doing installing a water heater in a friend's home when the problem reared its ugly head again as I attempted to start home. It took me several attempts (side stand up/down; roll bike back; pull clutch in and out repeatedly, shift gears, etc.) to finally get going and get home. This morning I read through the service manual (Genuine Yamaha service manual LIT-11616-04-96 which really is short on troubleshooting and illustrations. I think it is a better parts replacement book than troubleshooting guide, but it is the best I've got. Trouble is my manual is short on how to access the shift switch? I am somewhat stumped here, but still inclined to think I have a Clutch switch issue, primarily because I cannot start the bike in gear with the side stand up and the clutch handle pulled in. Any ideas. I need to get her going so I can get my new tire put on and move on to greasing the swing arm and replacing the clutch disks and pressure plates. A poker run is coming and I'd like to play. Thanks. Jim Davidson

    clutch basket

hey don't suppose anyone know what size wrench I need to get clutch basket off. Have all the plates out and was just wondering before I went to town and had to buy a bunch of different ones. thanks.
  12. I feel as I should Apologize to everyone for not checking in once in a while. You know how it is you get tided up into the daily living and forget about the help and friends that are right in front of you.. Until life reaches out and grabs you by the ...... Well in any case here is my problem... was out riding the other night with my 04 trike and as I went through the gears I though I felt the clutch slip. But when I tried to make it slip latter by accelerating in 5th gear going up a hill it felt fine. But latter I thought I felt it again.. Now my question is....am I losing my mind or is this what happens when the clutch starts to go out ? Any help is welcome Thanks Mike
  13. Has anyone bought the speed bleders you can get on E-bay and tried them out and do they work? Joe
  14. My 2001RSV is using fluid in the clutch. I just purchased this bike in December. About two months ago I hadn't yet gotten into a good routine of checking everything, when after about a 30 minute highway ride, I hit some traffic, went to slow down, and I was not able to easily downshift the transmission. After some serious stomping, I finally got into the lower gears when I noticed that even with the clutch fully engaged the bike was still pulling forward. I was able to get to my destination where I opened up the clutch master cylinder to find it was pretty low on fluid. I topped it off and after a couple hours of cool down it seemed to be shifting okay, so I hopped back on to take her home. Again, after the 30 minute ride it was difficult to downshift, but I was able to make it alright. The next morning I bled the system and thought everything was fine. Unfortunately, after another 4-500 miles, the fluid level started to go down again, and it started to shift harder again. I topped it off again and did another more thorough job of bleeding the system. Since then I have added fluid two more times. That's a total of 4 times to add fluid in less than 6 months, riding about 2500 miles. So, clearly I'm losing fluid somehow. There are no obvious drips or leaks, i.e, no spots on the garage floor. So I believe that I am only losing fluid when the bike is running. Any thoughts or suggestions on where to look or what to fix? Thanks.
  15. So after three different posts and multiple times veiwing Freebirds Barnett Clutch upgrade thread I finally pieced it all together why my new Barnett pressure plate wont work on my 1984 VR. BECAUSE ITS A 1984 VR and not a 1986 or newer LOL. So I now have a $150.00 dollar paper weight or an almost new (never rotated in the basket) Barnett Clutch spring upgrade for your 1986 or newer VR or VMAX. My bike shop special orderd this for me and are now refusing to give me a refund. My total cost was 147. and change. I will take $145 and I will pay shipping in the US to any one who is looking to upgrade. The bolts are a little worn and the washers are scraped a bit from the bolts but other than that it is still new. Please let me know if you are interested. Stay safe :225:MIKE
  16. Hello to all, I have a few questions for anyone who can help. 1984 VR 1. How do you get the push rod, ball, and large push rod out of the center of the clutch boss? 2. How much free play (Rotational) should there be with the clutch boss (Housing?) itself? I have about 2 inches before it catches. Thanks in advance. MIKE
  17. Yep the Squid did it again. He has helped out another Venture Rider in distress. He stopped by on his way home from work and showed me how to back bleed my clutch and get it going again. I say thank you Squidley and I hope you had a great ride home. Maybe your not there yet but again I say thank you.
  18. Just want to relate a few things about the clutch upgrade I just did on my 01 RSV. Instead of replacing the fiber disc's as I have in the past on several bikes I opted to add the extra (it's not really an extra one just a full size disc) remove a couple of washers at the rear of the clutch as well as the wire retainer and install a new and stronger spring. All the information is in the Tech section of this forum. The tension on the clutch lever is a bit more but manageable. Now when the clutch bites it bites a little more than I would like, I don't drag race. The thing that is bothering me the most right now is the engagement point has changed quite a bit, it use to start grabbing about 1/3 of the way out. Not it starts to engage at about the same spot but then releases and doesn't engage until the lever is out to about 2/3's of the travel. Maybe this is something I need to get use to? I'm really thinking about putting the 1/2 disc back in along with the washers and wire retainer but leave the heavy spring in there. I have bleed the brakes just to change the fluid, there was never any air in the system. So for the guys that are running this system, does this sound like the way yours is acting? Jerry
  19. What a difference changing out the clutch fluid after 39,000 miles. No more hard shifting and the clutch handle much stronger. Thanks for all the good info on this sight.

    08 Clutch Lever

Hello everyone....The weather here in central Florida is really starting to heat up (hit 90 today) Hoping someone has found a solution to this problem. I have average size hands and I am having a problem reaching the clutch lever while keeping my hand firmly on the grip. As it appears that there is not an adjustment that will move thelever closer to the grip I am hoping that there is a company that makes a sutible adjustable clutch lever that will fit my 08 RSV. Many thanks......
  21. I bought the speed bleeders for the brakes and clutch. I have a 04. Anyway I must have done it wrong when I first drained all the fluid out of the clutch before I put the new speed bleeder on. After I did that, I filled the reservoir up and tried pumping the clutch handle with the speed bleeder cracked a half or full turn and nothing happens. What did I do wrong?
  22. Just got my bike running and can now tell that there is a problem with the clutch. It has had a squeak as long as I have had the bike but was unable to tell where it was and what was causing it. My clutch had started to slip so I put two flex plates in the clutch to stiffen it up and now I can tell that the squeak is coming form the clutch area. With the clutch released, the squeak is real loud, but when you pull the clutch lever, the squeak goes away almost completely. Any Idea what is causing it and how hard to fix it will be? All help will be appreciated. Thanks
  23. Ok so I have decided that its finally time to do my starter clutch. I've lived with it slipping & clattering for several years, but now its just causing too much 'will it start' anxiety these days when ever I go anywhere. I'll probably end up doing it my self. I did my stator coil last year so I know my what into the fly wheel. My question is, do I need a special puller tool to get the flywheel off? I have a big puller that seems to be up to the job but I am worried that the hook ends on it might not fit between the fly wheel and the starter clutch gear. Is a special tool needed or recommended for the pulling of the fly wheel, or is a common garden variety puller likely to be useable? Thanks, Brian H. Uxbrige Ont
  24. Hi. Newbie here. I have a '91 Venture with approx 140k on it. Runs great and shifts solid and smooth with one problem....it doesn't want to go into neutral. Often I have to put it in first and then slip the clutch to get it in neutral. It generally goes in if I can get it in before stopping. Anyone had this problem before and is there anything I can do without a tranny rebuild? thx indy
  25. Changed the brake fluid, changed final gear oil, and motor oil, then added clutch fluid (dot 3 brake fluid). Now for some reason my '83s wheel spins as soon as you put it in gear with the clutch engaged??? what the heck did I do or didn't do? I am newer to this site and to the bike and not really what you would call "tech savvy" so any help would be appreciated. If it helps the clutch level was just barely in the sight glass untill I filled it. Thanks for any help in advance.
