1. less gas mileage than I have over the last two years. I used to average 45 MPG. Now, I'm getting right around 40 MPG. The only two changes that I have made are: 1) Replaced my stock air filters with K&N air filters 2) Added a pair of Baker Air Wings Any thoughts on which addition would most likely be the culprit? I do have the Air Wings pretty much open all the way...would this cause a significant amount of drag...enough to lose a couple of MPGs? Or is the more likely culprit the K&N filters?
2. Picked up a factory compressor and suspension controller to add to my VR Std. What's the capability of these units to fill a tire in a roadside repair? Rather than trying to hook the hoses to the existing fork and shocks permanently I'm thinking of just having a hose with a schrader valve to do triple duty. Manual shock air up and emergency roadside repair. I carry a small cigarette lighter compressor now but it's pretty lame and takes up space.
3. 83 venture, finally have all cylinders firing. Runs very good. As in previous thread, I am concerned I may have reamed out 'pilot air jet' in carbs 2 and 4. They were plugged and I run .020" stainless lock wire thru jets. When compared to good jets, .020 was too large to pass thru. Now I have serious "M2 .50 cal gun blast" out right side, only during engine braking/down shifting, as tach comes down below 3000rpm. Scared the s**t out of me, every time! If I pull clutch then brake to slow, no backfire to matter how hard I close throttle. I have read most backfire air leak in exhaust, but I can't detect one. What is the effect of my 'reamed out' pilot air jets? I also have what sounds like air leak on intake side. Kind of 'chugging sound' at idle, hardly noticable at normal cruise, pretty loud during loading like hill climbing. I suspect maybe aircleaner boot loose and air bypassing aircleaner, but could be below carbs I guess. Haven't had time to check yet. Any idea's before I get started? I'm thinking I have a carb too rich, and engine braking with throttle partially closed causes to much fuel to be pulled thru, unburnt, into exhaust. Maybe due to pilot air jet?(not sure what this REALLY does) Also thinking only idle circuit too rich as backfire only on closed throttle when main fuel circuit is closed.----Any of this make sense, or am I way off base trying to over analyzing it!
4. So I got this trailer now to pull behind the scoot. It has those little 8" wheels ... can anyone tell me how much air I should maintain in them?? (I'm talkin air PRESSURE ... not volume LOL)
5. I used to have one of those wooden-bead seat covers that was made for a cage seat, that I had trimmed down to fit my 83 venture years ago. After several years use, it finally fell apart. I've been remembering how comfy that thing was and was thinking about making another one. Today while in Wallyworld, I spotted one for $8.97 and bought it. This one is shaped a little different from the other one I had and it fit my venture seat right out of the bag without having to do a thing to it but weave 4 bungee cords through it to hold it to the seat. I did some riding on it this afternoon and it's sure more comfortable than the stock seat by itself, and yes, there is definitely a noticeable cool and steady flow of air down-under. It was cooler than usual here today and the cool flow of air underneath got downright chilly. It's not the most attractive seat cover on a bike but for 8 bucks, it does one heck of a job.
6. Well I got a line on a one piece seat for my RSTD I plan on installing an air ride driver and passenger seat, also a passenger air ride backrest and trunk. With som mod's I think everything will work out and hope to be the first to adjust the air ride seat on the FLY. What do you all think of my idea???????????? :happy34: Joe star4772
7. Help Please ! This has probably been discussed but I couldn't find it. I'm looking for an air temperature gauge for the bike. I remember a long time ago someone had a neat little digital that was fairly inexpensive. Thanks -
8. I have a 84 XVZ ,an when I'am coming to a stop, the the front wobbles like crazy. I messed with the air pres. an that helpped alot but I don't know what way I did it rear also.Does it need more air or less in the front. My class sym went up but the pump works good so I by past the sym.an added some toggle swites an it works great but did not add any gauges so not sure where my pres. are Iam going to add the gauges soon The steering head checks ok an tires are new an air pres. is right Thanks for any help on this one:witch_brew:
9. I changed the oil in my bike 3 times this year and only have 2500 miles - but I've got several years on my compressor and haven't changed the oil yet. I can't find an owners manual but the last time I talked to anybody about air compressor oil, I was told to use a non detergent oil because it didn't foam - is that still the way to go ?? btw it's a 220 volt 175 psI
10. Had a nice thing happen to me today (not), the valve stem on my front tire separated. I am curious however other than losing all my air is there any symptoms prior to all out failure I should have noticed? It had only been a few days since my last air pressure check. Joe
11. I swapped out the stock shield for the clearview..not sure if this caused this adverse condition or if it was always there. Anyway, I got tired of air blowing up beside the tank hitting me in the chest and helmet (alot of buffeting). I got the knee protectors from Buddy Rich and with the help of a heat gun and some 3m tape, I came up with these. After six months, I love them. They don't block all the air but they do block bout 75% of it, creating a much smoother ride, but still enough air to stay comfortable. They don't block any air to the engine compartment. To give you an example of what I'm talking bout, at 60 mph hold your hands palm down along side of fuel tank in front of your knees....RSV's may not experience this.
12. OK need some input here.... Being the only mechanic right now I'm kinda pushed to the limits working on Street - water - PD -FD - Comm.labor - sewer - meter reading vech...if you know what I mean:headache: Anyway 03 Ford E350 5.4L mtr A\C system..Front & rear air R\R A\C comp. 13. So I was without my daughter this past weekend and had a wild hair to go camping. After getting all my gear together that I normally take (in the car) ... there was no room for me on the bike. King size Air mattress, Tent, Deep Cycle Marine Battery (have to run a CPAP to sleep at nite), etc.... I started to look at options. Most places wanted 30.00 to get a site without electric....so I still would need the battery... 40 or more for a campsite with electric (a bit high but saves me from lugging the battery) Cabins were 100+ (not going to spend 100 on a cabin for myself... might as well get a hotel room) Then I foound this place...almost right where I wanted to be camping ANYWAY. http://www.steelsteedscamp.com/ for 45 a nite... they gave me a HUGE tent with a REAL king sized bed (no air mattress) sheets (nice thread count too), electricity to my tent and all the over fluffy towels I needed for the wekend! Bob was super nice (owner / manager) They also had travel trailers for rent (A/C etc) and other tents with air mattresses (for a little less). Bathrooms were SPOTLESS. If you find yourself in central PA Up around Bucknell (williamsport / State college is close enough) give them a look for a place to stay.
14. I know I can purchase a billet cover for the ugly Air Intake, but I thin I saw someone use 5 inch car air intake before. I have looked and cant find. Or maybe somthing diffrent to get rid of that ugly black box.
15. Looking for a set of 2nd gen air cleaner/box covers that you may have laying around for a possible project. Dont need the whole air box, just the outside covers. Thanks
16. Saw a White 2nd Gen parked in the driveway about 1/2 mile west of Wautoma about half an hour ago. Just wondering if it was anyone here. We are on the way to Air Venture in Oshkosh for the week.
17. The bad part: I ended up taking Friday off as a vacation day after getting to work because I had several things I needed to do or wanted to do, and work was not one of them. I ended up making about a 30 mile round trip run to look at a Miata for a friend and after stopping to get a bite to eat, the bike started running real bad, alternating from 3 to 4 cylinders. Then I started having a rear end wobble and pulled over. When I got off and saw the rear tire was going down, I also noticed gas making a puddle under the bike. I jumped back on it as there was a convience store about a mile away and it did have an air hose available. After getting there and airing up my rear tire twice, I finally got it on the center stand. I then laid down and rotated the tire, which was a new E-3 that I had just put on, I found a hole where it had been punchered. I pulled out my plug kit, plugged it while laying on very hot pavement at about 95º in the sun, and then took off 20 miles for home, with gas leaking out a lot. I barely made it home, going from a full tank when I started out to a blinking light. but I made it. I pulled off the air box and sure enough, I had the right rear carb with fuel running out the over flow tube. Before I took anything apart, I pulled off the inlet hose for that carb and using an air nozzle with a tube on, I blew air into it. Yes, gas did spray out a jet or two, but it ended up working fine. I then took off the wheel and removed the tire and buffed down the area where I had put the plug and put on a heavy duty patch. I then put the tire back on, checked balance, and put everything back together. The good part: Got up Saturday morning and picked up a friend and before the weekend was over, I put 570 miles on the bike, which ran great and got from 43 to 45mpg. Of these miles, only about 40 were interstate and most were two lane with one run being from Cherokee, NC on the Blue Ridge Parkway up to just past Little Switzerland. This was at temperatures in mid 70's to mid 80's. knowing that down in the valleys it was mid 90's at least. If I was going to encounter this type of a problem, I was really glad it happened when it did because that two day ride had a lot of time in remote areas with no phone service. It ended up being a great weekend. RandyA
18. Was doing some odds and end things this past weekend and took my air filter box off--After I got it out of the small compartment it is lodged in I noticed someone had taken a 1/4 in. drill bit and drilled about 8 small holes on the sides of the box (all 4 sides)---Do you think this would improve performance or just some "Shade tree Mechanic" trying to increase the air into the carbs?...........................................Thanx......................Larry
19. Hi every one have not being on this site for a while got my self a classic CZ 1948 Perak (feather) Model 11 and trying to find info and parts for it.I am at 90,000 km full services vale shims, carb sink, greasing, plus more but when I pull the air induction box off and found oil in the left side and oil water muck in the left and right sides were could this oil and water be coming from.
20. OOPS I am in trouble now While installing my rake for the Trike I broke off an air schrader valve on the top of a fork. I really don't think there was any air in it/them, but that isn't the problem. The problem is where to find just the schrader valve. Does anyone have one that is in their tool box that some how came up as a spar,,, In short HELP !!!! I know Dumb Ass Move?!! but if you knew the hassle I have had with this triple tree you would understand. Mill work, and fit of this new design sucks.
21. I'm contemplating buying a set of K&N Air filters for my 08 RSV. Do the filters come "pre-charged", or do I have to buy a charging kit prior to first use? Thanks in advance!
22. any resonably priced good source of supply for air filter for 08 RSTD?
23. Two years ago I put a set of stebal air horns on. I just got it back from the shop to replace the shock and the horn on the right I did not like the way they had it mounted, they had to remove it to get to the shock. So I was going to move it to where I wanted it and the bolt holding the horn came loose. So I had to unplug the wires to remount it and one of the wires drooped on the exhaust pipe and sparked and now neither air horn works. I replaced the relay nothing, the stock front horn works but not the rear horn. I did run separate fuses for each air horn, both look good. what do I need to check to get them to work? Have the horns attached to passenger floorboards. tew47
24. Anyone with the Baker Built Air wings installed have a GOOD, clear picture of the finished installation? The instructions showing a diagram of the fnished installation is about 2" x 2"...so it looks like a black "blob". I can't make out much detail...even with my "readers" on! Anyone?
