  1. that was a heart warming story. not meaning to offend you, but did it really happen. if so you are a good human being. i would have done the same thing, no doubt about it. kudo's. bill
  2. i noticed what you are talking about, when i first put mine on. i did not like the touchy steering at highway speeds. after i got used to it i didn't notice it anymore. most big bikes have a 130. the steering is nimble and more sport bike like. definate improvement at low speeds. the 150 makes for slower steering and feels more secure at speed. but if you want to push one the 130 is the cats meow. the 150 size is a common rear tire size on alot of big bikes. the ideal thing would be the same size tire on front and rear, but rear tires need more contact patch for alot of reasons other than good handling, so the rear is usually wider. i would go with what ever feels comfortable for you. one thing i don't understand is highspeeds not feeling secure. mine was dead stable over 100 mph with the 130 front.
  3. linda and i took off one night on my honda 305 scrambler. it was 4 degrees. got about a block from the house and hit some ice patches and headed for home. that was in the early 1970's. cold still don't stop me. it's the black ice i don't like. i ride all winter no matter what the temp. is. i just don't go as far. never winterized a bike in my life. if the bike will start it gets rode.
  4. okay don, i have the dates for my st. charles meet and eat. friday and saturday, may the 9th and 10th, 2010. i checked the extended forcast and it's supposed to be sunny and clear that weekend. this is going to be a longer meet than last year, to make it worthwhile for people to come a farther distance. bill
  5. thanks guys, thought it was a secret code. bill
  6. my 1100 v-star was quiet. it may have had helical gears. my 1300 v-star really sings a song. not as high pitched as my royal star was but loud. on the straight cut gears it depends on which side of the tolerance the gear lash is on as to whether it is loud or not. loud or quiet it has no ill effects mechanically.
  7. whats cody 09, under venture rider discussions?
  8. don, i think i made a mistake, my meet and eat was in may last year, not the end of june. i will pick a date after you do. probably the middle of may or earlier. bill
  9. hey jt, been meaning to ask, hows jeanie doing. hope she if doing well . bill
  10. the only absolute cure for the whine would be helical primary gears. big problem there is do to the helical angle of the gears there is a tremendous amount of side deflection on the gears. with the narrow bearing support, on the basket. this is not good. lots of bikes use helical primary gears like suzuki. and from my experience building modified gs 1100 engines, there is side deflection do to the clearance in the basket bearings. so moral of the story is the yammer straight cut gears are the most pracical and long term reliable way to go. straight cut gears ar just noisy. you should here my v-star. bill
  11. thanks cookie and everyone else for the great welcome, you all made my day. i will try to live up to my name. as time goes on i hope to be accepted as the handsome, dubineer, intellegent, easy going, etc, etc, young fellow that i am. and jt the photos are deceiving. i dyed my hair bald. snarley bill :rotf::rotfl:

  14. sherry ,great to hear from you. sorry to hear about some of your tough times but thing will get better as time moves on. your barn convertion really sounds neat. linda always wanted to convert a barn into a house on some acreage but just to old to move again. hang in there and don't stay away so long. bill
  15. i gave up on politics. no one would nominate me for president. said my bikes would'nt be appropriate sitting in the oval office.
  16. sounds good. i will shoot for the end of june again.
  17. i may be wrong on this but on one of my bikes , and i think it was my rstd. the axle is'nt actually bent from abuse, it is not machined but looked like it was hot drawn when manufactured. a less expensive way to manufacture them. mine had a slight bow when i checked it on a flat surface. it should pull straight if you torque it to 110 ft. lbs. you have to use a formula multiplying the torque times the thread pitch on the axle and you will find there will be quite a few thousand pounds of linear pull on the axle to straighten it.
  18. i'm kind of new here, just joined this morning. thought i would introduce myself. i'm snarley bill :clap2:
  19. don when is your maitenance day? i want to pick a date around the end of june for my st. charles meet and eat, but don't want to interfere with your meet. bill ps. thanks for changing my name. i'll try to live up to it.
