rode down to herman mo. sunday then up by montgomery city. trees were awesome once the sun came up, almost 200 miles. took the vstar to just listen to the big v-twin purr. got to really watch the deer around here in the dark this time of the year. it was a great ride. hardly a car on the road. went to troy mo. saturday morning on the wing. a little cool out, but still enjoyable. warmed up fast when the sun came up. nothing like sunrise in the boonies on a bike.

i had heated grips on my rstd. they were okay, but the throttle side got hot and on the clutch side, the handle bar absorbed most of the heat. i had the tape on under the grip heaters maybe the regular grips will insulate from the bar.

i found the best gloves for really cold weather are a good set of leather bike gloves with gaunlets. buy loose fitting ones like a size or two to large. the airspace will keep from cutting off circulation and help insulate. the gloves i wear most of the time are $7.00 leather gloves from aldis .i don't break out the heavy gear till it gets below 35, unless i am going a few hundred miles or more.

those hi-vo chains that they use on the older design engines are a whole different deal than a roller chain. they create much more sprocket wear do to the gear tooth like meshing of the chain and sprocket. most of the replacement aftermarket cam sprockets were cast iron instead of nylon. all the racers went to rollerchain and sprockets. most of the oem hy-vo chain and aftermarket replacement chain was a pretty low guality soft chain to keep the cost down. i would guess the pins and plates were annealed carbon steel probably around 35 to 40 rockwell, because of the many points of shear compared to a roller chain which the rock well hardness is probably around 55 to 58. i would also think that the pins and side plates on a good high tensil roller chain are made of special metals such as chromemoly. when you think of how small of a diameter a roller pin is on a 630 chain is, and the impact and shear force they get on a drag bike. it's hard to believe they don't break.

just put it on my calender. had to break out a new 09 calender.

chains don't really stretch, what happens is the link pins and bushings wear. making more clearance and causing the chain to get longer. the reason chains get tight and loose spots if the sprockets have no runout,is the rockwell hardness on the bushings and pins can vary several points from heat treat. there is usually a 2 to 3 point tolerance on rockwell hardness given to the heat treaters. this variation in hardness will cause some pins to wear a little more than others, causing short and long sections of chain.

don here's what i found out for you. royal enfield badged it's 250/350/and 500 singles as indians for the american market. this lasted till 1959. not a real indian but has a neat looking vintage motor. probably have a hard time finding parts and not sure of the value. don't know exactly what model that is, the picture is'nt that good, they had a tt model named a woodsman. looks like the enfield motor. check with stark lite he is the indian guru. he even makes indian clone motors. good luck. :2133:bill

that i could'nt tell you. all i know is my horns on my 1800 sound like the big car horns of old. i have never used them yet. just not a horn honker. i would rather use the finger gesture, with a few well picked words of old. :cool10:

here,s the way i figure it it.i got a big raise this week. it cost me twenty dollars less to fill my ranger. gas in st. louis is $ 2.15. :clap2: come on $1.75. i will settle for that. :clap2:

don , i am going to really try to get to your maintenance day this year. it ain't that i don't like you, i just have a bad habit of spreading my self to thin. you may need a wing mechanic on hand. not getting much experience cuz it just won't break. but i will memorize the shop manual in my spare time. lol. your can't get the dates right buddy, bill. :rotf: ps. you don't realize how much trouble it is to be a pain in the old tail section.

okay folks, not much has been happening on our committee, but here is what we have to date. cindy will be opening the registration in the very near future. we have gotten most of the rally costs together. the dinner will be on thursday night, and as of now will be the hub restaurants ultimate prime rib and fried chicken, and all the trimmings. randall who owns the hub says it is the worlds best. if you plan on bringing kids , we have that covered with a special price for 12 years and under. registration fee will cover the final meal in the hall, a t-shirt with a neat logo by freebird, a matching patch, a really neat name button so every one knows who you are. we will have a slight discount for couples registering. there will be a vendor area inside the airconditioned hall, so if you want to contribute something there like having something you want to vend contact me or danob11, who is in charge of vendors. since the hub has a really nice restaurant on site we are going to have a breakfast buffet every morning which will be pay when you eat. since i like my coffee at 5 in the morning. i am going to see that the early risers are covered, if i have to make it myself. i'm sure i can pressure the hub to do that for us guys. still busting our butts to make this the best meet of all. not trying to out do anyone but just want to have every one to have a good time and no complaints. if i forgot anything i hope the rest of the committee will chime in and let everyone know. bill to the 2009 international rally :clap2:

if you want some loud horns cheap, get some off a salvage 1800 goldwing on ebay. sound just like car horns. they are loud and very compact. there may be some on there now cuz they are parting out a couple of wings. bill

when i started messing with horses it was wonderful. met lots of people won alot of horse shows. did some amateur traning, did some team penning, then i went professional and made a job out of it. did alot of training, kept showing, bought and sold alot of horses, had a boarding barn, and even owned a tack shop. it was fun for a few years then it got to be a drag like alot of jobs and ruined the fun part. still of all the things i enjoyed the most was running cattle and trail riding. it's probably a little better than bike riding, cuz if you have a trustworthy horse you can take off in the woods by yourself, and there ain't nothing like being close to nature with just you and your buddy under you. i had some really good horses that were a joy to ride. now i'm down to one horse and the urge seems to have gone away to ride, i still ride but not often. now i love riding my bikes more than i ever have in my life. and met alot of fine people because of it. but my memories are still there of all the fun i had with my favorite horse of all time herman. had to put him down seveal years ago and i still miss him. in fact i am sitting here starting to cry, sorry about that. darn that was tough to write.thanks for letting me share a great memory. bill

been riding horses and bikes most of my life. the big difference is you don't have to clean up after the bike, and a whole lot less work. riding the trails is enjoyable, but i would rather be on a bike. a bikes a whole lot cheaper all the way around.

jt , i would say you have a ruptured lower disc and a pinched siatic nerve. i've got one and some times my legs feel like they are on fire. had it since i was 23 and just learned to live with the pain. seems like a normal way of life anymore. can't imagine what a day without pain would be like. really sends a shock wave when i hit a bump in the road, and the bike bottoms out. no way to fix it accept exercise. bill

i would never get on the back of the bike with anybody. much less fall asleep. my wife says you ought to ride on the back with you. you would'nt do it. i said you are exactly right. women have to be nuts to get on the back of a bike with us. i don't even like to ride in a car when i don't have control over the situation. you gals definately have more nerve than you need. :cool10:
