  1. they weren't figuring on the extra weight of the bag pipes when they designed the forks. :rotf:
  2. joe, the preload on the rear shock is hydraulic. there is away fo replenish the oil in the chamber. even though you are reading 25 on the preload you may not have any or very low preload. this is a commom thing on the wing. the preload read out is not pressure, but the location of the preload piston. if the oil is not in the chamber you will get a false reading. with the miles you have, your spring is probably weak which amplifies the problem. this is not an air shock. the hydraulic piston compresses the spring to increase preload .
  3. on the gl forum fred has a set of dvd's on short cuts to work on everything on a wing. i bought a set last year. really makes everything easier. he has alot of shortcuts and tricks. the videos are very high quality. and he holds the camera with one hand and works on the bike with the other. go figure.
  4. just got back from my morning ride, and darn near hit another deer. it was standing on the side of the road and darted across in front of me, just like i knew it would. i hit the brakes hard early and missed it by about 10 feet. i think the deer are out to get me.
  5. here is a great on line parts supplier for the gold wing, www.directlineparts.com/ they have great service and prices. i bought most all my wing stuff from them. they also cover other metric bikes.
  6. looks like the new goldwing tech section is starting to roll. anyone on here that has a wing or is thinking about getting one, check it out. the good info is starting to roll in. eck posted some great info. don't know if i could lay my wing down to change the wheel in the rear, but lots of wing owners do. there's a great movie of a guy doing it in the tech section, thanks to eck.
  7. joe, i have had no issues with my rear shock yet. i run the preload on 9. it seems fine for me. i have a new progessive 460 rear shock sitting here in a box. just can't get the energy up to take half the bike apart to install it. i had a set of progressive springs for the front but decided to go with the race tech springs after doing a little research. the race tec springs aren't progressive wound and give a little more rebound responce. i was having trouble with the oem front end not rebounding on one certain section of outer road on i-70. so much so that i avoided riding on it. my other bikes were never a problem on it. now the wing handles the slight wash board condition just fine. i really recommend the full racetech mod. it is a major job but, but well worth the money and effort. all this tech talk is kind of getting me excited about working on my wing. i need a new aircleaner and have been putting that off. was going to do the aircleaner and rear shock at the same time. hard to believe you have to start at the front and pull the dash and speaker covers off to get to the rear shock and air cleaner. lol.
  8. i've hit three live deer, one on a scooter and one dead one in my ranger. and had probably a hundred near misses. we live in deer country. they run and graze in our subdivisions. wiped out my honda helix on a big buck. i ride on constant deer watch. last month one came up along side me running and cut across in front of me just as i thought he would. i caught him out of the corner of my eye. i was on my bike doing about 35. i was ready for him and just missed him after hard braking. i never realized how much of a problem deer were around here until the missouri river flooded last year and they had to close down some highways because herds of deer were on the road.
  9. buddy, i may sell it next summer, i'm kind of getting the hankering to retire again and will have to get back in the real world of good sense, and get down to 2 bikes. i want to keep my majesty for sure, and one other. not sure which one. hope you find a nice wing. see you at the hub. bill
  10. one of the major weak points of all 1800 wings is the front suspension. the stock 1800 wing has anti dive and piss poor front springs, that sag early in life, and are to soft to begin with. the dampening is not the best either. there are two fixes for this . both make a difference of night and day in handling and ride. the first and most expensive is traxxion suspension like eck has on his. the poor mans fix is the race tech springs, gold valve and emulator like i have installed in mine. mine was around $400.00 for parts and i did it myself. the traxxion is over $2000,00 dollars and it requires machining of the forks , so you have to have them or one of their dealers do it. i consider either of these mods a must after riding mine stock, and with the modification. both mods deactivate the antidive as part of the install. you can deactivate the antidive with a simple mod and a nickle with a hole drilled in it, but then the front springs will be noticibly inadequate on hard stops. the antidive basically locks up the front forks when stopping hard and makes for a really rough ride when decelerating and using the brakes, front or rear. since wings have interlocking front and rear brakes it does it when using both brakes. some folks may not be bothered or notice the inefficiency of the oem set up. if your wanting the ultimate handling and suspension performance out of your wing, either one of these mods will make a big difference. the big gains are, much improved rebound on rough roads, a firmer ride, slightly more ground clearance (harder to drag my highway boards now), and a more secure feel in the curves. wings are unbelievable in the handling department. i can't believe a bike this big can can handle like a sport bike.
  11. hey eck, thats good stuff. we wingers have all kinds of neat secrets. like new rear tires and wheels, factory mounted and balanced for $150.00 or less on ebay all the time. i bought a new swing arm, rearend, tire, wheel, brake disc, and rotor assembly on ebay for $227.00 plus shipping. a trike take off. how about 8000 mile oil and filter changes. not for me but thats what honda recommends. plug and play on most accessories, an aftermarket accessory supply almost comparable to hardley. how about an 80 watt sound system, and a 60 plus amp alternator i think it may be 100 amp. all this and 44 mpg. the list goes on. we need to get a tech library going for goldwing info. is that possible?
  12. ive had my compressor for about 25 years in my home machine shop. it is a 5 horse v-twin industrial compressor. i leave it on all the time and use mobil1 10-w-30 automotive. i ran it on initial break in for fifteen minutes with no load when i bought it, twenty five years ago, and have changed oil twice. it runs about once every other day if i don't use it cuz of a slow leak. it never uses oil and i use it almost every day. the only time it ever gets shut down is if i go out of town. it has never used oil, and runs like new. last time i changed oil in it was about 10 years ago. it's about due again. we have two, two stage 10 hp. compressors in our machine shop that are tied together on line and run 24 hours a day, 3 shifts. we use automotive oil in them and seldom ever change it. we do drain the tanks on them regularly and have an in line drier. they kick on about every half hour during work hours. compressors are virtually maintenance free. keep the tank drained, clean the air filters, monitor the oil level, and they will run for ever.
  13. if you go to the main wing site they have a million mile club. the wingnuts over there consider 200,000 miles on their wings, low mileage. they must live on them. i have 14500 on my 08 but including my other four bikes, i ride about 25,000 mi. a year. maybe a little less this year due to a horrendous winter, and staying home with momma a little more. maybe see you in memphis. bill
  14. hey buddy, check with honda of russellville. i bought my new 2008 from them on ebay for $16,500. out the door. honda had 1.9 financing for 36 months. could'nt pass it up. can't use your own money that cheap. honda always has somekind of special credit deals. skip ebay and ask for jonathan davis. 479-968-2233 he's the ebay man at honda of russellville. he told me they sell 30 wings a month. they will pick you up at little rock, ar. airport, and you can ride it home. just a thought. i would sell you mine but every time i get on it i decide to keep it.
  15. buddy, you will need at least a nine foot trailer if it has a ramp. a wing is longer than a venture. i haul my wing on my nine foot trailer and it goes almost to the rear. i built the trailer for my rstd and designed it to fit the bike with a little to spare. bill
  16. hey don, could it be you are looking at wings? tell the truth. we won't kick you off the site.
  17. i bought a new 75 wing in 1976. it was a really fine bike. electric smooth and fairly fast. my 08 1800 is electric smooth and ultra fast. honda must have done something right in the beginning. it's been 35 years, and they still have a winner.
  18. the 1800 wing just seems to do it all. the only draw backs are they are a bear to work on, and you pay the leg room price for all that power. they set the standard for touring bikes and you never have to work on them. theres guys on the wing site that have over 300,000 miles on them and do the recommended 8000 mi. oil and filter changes with dino oil. they are bullitt proof reliable, fast, handle like a sport bike, comfortable, plug and play on most accessories, loaded with the latest gadgets, and a trememdous selection of aftermarket goodies. they are bargain priced if you shop around. what more can i say. guess thats why i'm a wingnut.
